trying to use data while talking on the phone. - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I have a SM-G955U that's GSM unlocked. It was originally an Xfinity phone, but I'm now using it on mertopcs. Mero supports active data while talking on the phone. But my S8+ disables my data while making a call. I do not have root, is there a way to keep my data while talking on the phone?

Try this settings/ connections/ mobile networks/ VoLTE Calls. I think that's the option you're looking for

That option doesn't appear when I go there...

I've checked through the phone app and the settings menu, nothing like that appears anywhere.

I think this option depends on the carrier itself you're using some carriers doesn't support vollte so this option will not be enabled by default. My carrier supports vollte.
Next to 4G or LTE icon vollte will appear like the picture below
https://mega.nz/#!zZBAAaaA!UJM62RS1-M0NwU7Tu1X_wpXiGKf3QXWQlSf3OB41qe0

The original carrier for this phone did not support vol LTE by the carrier I'm using now does support it. It was originally Xfinity and now I'm with MetroPCS.

Maybe flash the MetroPCS firmware or unlocked firmware.

You don't need use VoLTE to talk and browse at the same time, if your carrier doesn't support VoLTE your cell phone will perform a CS Fall Back to UMTS and then (if your carrier support MULTI RAB) your cell phone will make MULTI RAB, one RAB CS to voice and one RAB PS to data. The problem is when you are using 2 sim cards, if you make a call from one sim card and the data came from the other sim card, the Galaxy S8+ will block the other sim card in a call.
So to call and use data at the same time you will need VoLTE in LTE or Multi RAB in UMTS but must be the same sim card.

SM-G920W8 | No Option To Connect to LTE

I bought an Unlocked Canadian S6 recently, and it just won't let me connect to the LTE network.
Model Numer : SM-G920W8
Android Version : 5.0.2
Baseband : G920W8VLU1AOCG
Connecting to the LTE is not even an option. When I go in the Network Options, I get the choice between :
-WDCMA/GSM (auto connect)
- WDCMA only
- GSM only
I know for a fact that I am in the coverage zone, so no need to ask that silly question
I've tried different SIM cards, played in the options a bit, and factory reset the phone about 5 times now, yet nothing seems to work.
Also, when I try to do the update, it just reboots and gives me an Android logo and a failed Icon
I've only seen one other post like this from a carrier's support website, but no solutions were found.
**Update : For a reason, after a recovery, it will connect to the LTE for a bit or until next boot, then go back to what it is now.
First question, who did you buy the phone from? Second, Is it second hand? By default, Wind mobile does not allow the LTE option to be displayed in system settings as they as a carrier don't have LTE. It is blocked by the CSC setting for the carrier. As for other carriers It should leave you the option to connect in settings where you say it is not. If it is a Wind phone, You would need to change the CSC to enable the LTE selection. There is a method to force LTE even without option in settings, but I think it is removed in the latest firmware. Try dialing *#2263# in the dialer. It may bring you to menu that will allow you to select LTE. This is not a permanent method though as it will need to be done every boot. The other way, (If you are in fact a Wind/Mobilicity phone) is to enter dialer and enter *#272*IMEI# with IMEI being your devices unique code. If at all possible, take a full nand and Titanium Backup before doing this and be sure to transfer everything off the phone to a PC. This method wipes everything and I mean everything off the phone buy is a surefire way to enable LTE.
Yes, it was second hand. I didn't ask who was his carrier simply because it was unlocked.
I'll try it tomorrow, thanks for the information
Here is the menu you will see when you type the *#272*imei# code into your dialer. The codes are the carrier names. Mine which is GLW is Wind, BMC is Bell, RWC is Rogers, etc.
Maybe there is no LTE in your area...

It would still be visible in the Settings/Mobile Networks/Network Mode menu which it is not. His problem is more than that.

Sweet! It works :good: Thanks man
Now, would you have any ideas on why the update won't work? I didn't get much into it yet, but I will soon.
I'm not sure why it wouldn't update, but now that you have changed the CSC you can download the update and flash with Odin. Pick your carrier and go to town. The guy running the following thread runs his own firmware host. He's got amazing DL speeds. Usually takes me 6 or so minutes to do the 1.6gb file. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3086387
I'm having the same issue.

Connected with someone selling a G920W8 version. LTE is disabled and the codes aren't working. Can you reaffirm which unlock code worked for you? I'm on Fido, what LTE network are you using?
hi BCSC
Thanks for the details. I searched complete net and read all articles but nothing set me up with the proper thing. i read your solution i dialled *#2263# and all i got is service mode and in that i went to band selection , LTE and the all ....... Yes and its showing LTE in mobile data. THanks so much.
But now another issue, network is showing perfect but no outgoing and incoming calls.
in incoming its showing busy and on outgoing its not connecting to another phone.
And, Lte is not showing in mobile networks, There only 3 options still are showing.
Mine is same Wind S6 but i had to use in India.
Let Me know
Thanks once again

Picking LTE from the service mode will note make it visible from the settings menu. Its more of a workarpund instead of a way of permanently enabling it. As for the issue of no out/in calls, my best guess is that it could be due to which LTE bands are being used or are available in India. Unfortunatly I have no way to test that option. I only was successful in getting the Wind LTE option on Canadian carriers.

activate VoLte on unrooted device

Is there any possibility I can get the volte setting to show up on an unrooted European dual SIM model?
Via adb for example?
Call settings, scroll down to the bottom and allow Internet calling for all calls. Keep your data active and when you make a call on 4g it will switch if the network is capable. Be aware that it can munch through your data plan!.
Beamed in by telepathy
That is exactly the problem.. there isn't such an option.. this only is there with the Single Sim Variant. Dual Sim Variant doesn't show it..
Sorry for bump this old thread but I have the same model and issue.
I have a HTC u11 European dual simm, I don't have this option in my menu, my carrier (Vodafone ES) have a VoLTE but I can't work with VoLTE.
I don't have root the phone.
If in cal, I type *#*#4636#*#* appears the option VoLTE but I can't change this option for enable.
Its possible enabled VoLTE in unrooted phone and in the dual simm version?
Thanks and regards.

Dual SIM VoLTE Verizon and Fi

Hi all,
Here is my situation and problem. I have 2 Sims:
SIM 1: Google Fi - my personal number, I want to use it for phone calls only even though it has a small data lan
SIM 2: Verizon - work sim, I want all the data to go through here.
My setting is phone call sim 1 and data Sim 2.
When I make a phone call via SIM1, I lost LTE on my SIM2.
I did call Verizon to get the CDMA LESS feature turned on.
If I were to change the setting to phone call and data through the same sim, then VoLTE works just fine. So I think this is an issue with the phone itself/settings.
Thoughts?

You need to go into settings "SIM & network settings".
Select "Dual 4G networks".
I don't have your issue.

I have a similar problem. Voice on SIM1 data on SIM2 different carriers. Receive calls and text OK answering won't work. Roaming in Europe. Worked OK prior to recent update. Same setup works on Samsung S10e

Can't believe there are so few of us having this issue. Why would the LTE turn off when I'm not even using that sim?
Probably many are using just a single SIM.
Have you tried switching the sims in the slots?

I have no help. In January Mint had an issue where their SIM had to be in slot 1. So I flipped SIMs. Truphone won't work either.

VZW WIFI Calling on unlocked Note 20 ultra 5G

Found out the guy lied. So the US unlocked N20U does work with VZW wifi calling.
It definitely does work with my N20U on Verizon.
The only differences between the Unlocked and VZW version are:
1. Native Verizon video calling doesn't work on unlocked, but the integrated Duo video calling is better anyways.
2. Verizon's model doesn't have the Samsung "Smart Call" feature for Caller ID. Instead, it uses Verizon's app.
3. Verizon's version has the Verizon bootscreen and a ton of bloatware, especially games, news apps, and what not. Fortunately, most can be uninstalled, and the rest can be disabled using ADB.

I can confirm all of the above. I have an unlocked phone, on U1 firmware, with a Verizon SIM. Wifi calling works. There is no "Advanced Calling" menu in Connection Settings, but there's a toggle for VoLTE and it was switched on by default. No 4G icon, but rather a LTE+ icon is shown in status bar. The only thing I haven't found a workaround for is the native video calling. I cannot initiate it (phone app does not show the option when I'm on a call with another Verizon phone) and if another Verizon phone attempts to initiate a native video call, it tells them that I cannot accept video calls. I checked my VZW account settings on a PC, and despite the video call option being on and not blocked, native calling doesn't work, as described above. Duo works fine for video. I was able to get Visual Voicemail by installing the app that I go from another thread. I installed it before checking to see if the U1 firmware added it by default, so I can't say for sure that it wasn't there already.

So I had an interesting observation. I flashed my Verizon Note 10+ to U1 firmware and noticed a drastic reduction in data speeds. After getting the Note 20 Ultra, I noticed the data speeds were nearly doubled. I then disabled a ton of Verizon and Samsung apps, and my data speeds dropped drastically as well. Through the process of elimination, I found that the "My Verizon Services" app seems to have a major impact on data speeds. As long as I keep that enabled on the Verizon firmware, data speeds are blazing fast.
Is it possible that Verizon uses apps to prioritize or de-prioritize data speeds? I'd be curious if one could do a side by side of the Unlocked vs Verizon firmware.

Thanks for sharing your observations regarding wifi calling. How can one tell it is working? I am used to older phones advising that wifi calling was in use via text in the phone app. I'm not seeing this notification on my new unlocked T-Mobile-branded N20U with Verizon SIM.
I also noticed the VoLTE toggle in the phone app, switched on and greyed-out, can't be deselected. Of course they don't want to support anything but VoIP anymore. What is the behavior, if the cell signal is decent it won't use wifi? It can't be forced to prefer wifi, can it? I used the trick of putting it in airplane mode, then turn on wifi to try and force it to wifi call. It said it couldn't make the call in airplane mode, which is not encouraging regarding wifi calling being functional on this phone/provider combo.

From what I've found, if you put another carrier's SIM in a truly unlocked carrier branded phone, it should prompt you to apply your carrier settings upon boot. For example when I put a Spectrum SIM in a Verizon phone, it "converted" the CSC (Carrier settings and boot logo) to Spectrum.
My recommendation is to attempt to get the SIM to switch the CSC automatically. If not, use the patched ODIN to flash the Unlocked U1 firmware, and optionally you can flash Verizon from there if Verizon's Video Calling is a must.

Thanks for the detailed response. I was a little concerned about the T-Mobile branding, and what that truly meant at the software level. I installed the Verizon SIM to this factory-reset phone. If it was going to switch CSC I think it would have happened then. It went through the usual setup steps, but still displays T-Mobile screen at boot. I'm not sure what else I would do to "get the SIM to switch the CSC automatically".
Would you agree with my conclusion that wifi calling isn't working based on the outgoing call failure when in airplane mode with wifi on?
If there is better, more-unlocked firmware I'm not opposed to flashing it. It's been a while since I've played with rooting and custom ROMS, but I'm guessing stock firmware is a lower-risk activity on an expensive phone.
I'll refer to this link to try and flash to unlocked U1 firmware, hopefully that will allow wifi calling compatibility:

How to enable VoLTE for LG V50 (Korean U+)

How to enable VoLTE on the korean U+? I've checked with my carrier and they confirmed that VoLTE service is active on my SIM. However I can't find any option to enable VoLTE in phone settings. I've only seen a VoLTE call quality option in phone settings - not sure if this means that it's already active. The status bag logo also shows just LTE when mobile data is enabled - no indication of VoLTE.
If you have mobile data showing LTE and it does not change to 3G (or something else) when you make or receive a call, then you are on VoLTE. That is my general understanding of it.

Ah ok. It seems you are not on VoLTE then. Sorry, I don't know how to activate it though.
i have the sprint version but am currently on tmobile network which (was switching me to 3g) during voice call or txt msg.
now that tmobile has been taking down 3g (and they are working on a tower in my area) i do not even see 3g symbol in notifications anymore. i can complete the call and there is no lte symbol or 3g symbol but call completes but can not use data still.
when i hang up i see lte and can use data (browse the web)
the funny thing is before i went to tmobile i had metro pcs in this area which uses tmobile network and i never had a volte problem so you know this is software and they just want us to buy more phones.
this exact phone worked on metropcs with volte no problem.
