No idea what's changed or happened. Same phone, Same computer, Same cable. When I first rooted I was able to connect the phone and change the usb connection type no problem. Now when I plug in it just starts charging and there's no notification for me to select to adjust the type of setting. USB Debugging is still selected in developer options.
Any ideas on how to fix?
EDIT: Nevermind. I fixed... somehow. not sure what I did. But GTG now.

I'm trying to unlock my dads old Captivate, but I need to connect it to the computer to do this. No matter what I do, this phone will not connect or be recognized by the computer. I plug it into the computer and it makes the little beep it makes when you connect, but thats it. No "USB Connected" on the top bar or anything.
I can connect my captivate fine, its just his. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and that wont work. Any ideas?
Do you have the drivers installed?

Ye, the drivers are installed. Would it be a driver problem though if my one captivate works, but the other? That sounds like a phone problem to me.
Settings> applications>usb(something or other)> mass storage.
Also make sure usb debugging is enabled...
The froyo settings might be different...the usb options could be in "wireless and network" instead of applications.

Nope, that doesnt work either. Its like its not even connected. Nothing showing up on my computer, nothing on the phone. The only thing that shows up when you plug it in is the charger icon comes on to let you know its charging.
i would recommend that you try another computer if that doesn't work, restore your phone to factory and if that doesn't work then you have two out of three possibilities that might lol, be seriously i think its not a drivers issue if the other phone is working. It might be a problem with the computer recognizing the port i really cant think of anything else..

If it's not connecting to either captivate it's a driver issue. Make sure that USB debugging is on and that under the application usb setting you have it set to ask on connect. Try a different usb port on the pc, or another cable. I had a bad cable a while back that would charge but not connect, it was even the one that came with the phone.
Use a USB port off the back of the computer, coming DIRECTLY off the MB. There have been tons of issues with using remote USB ports. If it's beeping when it connects, it's being seen by the computer. Just that there's a problem with getting the proper info.
I get this problem sometimes too. This is how I solve it. Under USB settings select Samsung Kies and plug the USB cable into your computer and phone. See if your computer recognizes your phone. Mine won't recognize Mass Storage but will Kies. I don't have the program installed so windows will say Drivers Not Successfully Installed. Once you have done that, restart the computer and phone with USB cord unplugged. Once both come back on, switch your phone back to Mass Storage and plug in your USB cable to both the computer and phone and see if it will be detected by your computer. If not I would try a different USB cable. That is what works for me when I have that problem.

Some cappies have issues with generic cables. Make its the original or a high quality one.

Would be a good idea to check if the following
1. Settings- applications- USB settings : make it ask on connection.
2. Change the USB port which you connect
When i'm connecting my phone via usb, choose a connection type screen does not appear and i cant select the "disk drive" or "charge only" options. When i tap to change usb settings, it sends me to "portable hotspot & tethering"
Windows recognizes usb device
Phone is stock, some days ago updated to android 4.1
Try disabling usb debugging. On my Blade I have to do that if I want to mount it as usb storage.
My S and tablets doesnt need that though, but might be worth a shot.
Hmm interesting my phone turns usb debugging automaticaly on when i connect my device, tried hard reset, problem still remains
I see. I read about someone else having the same issue on JB. I guess its a bug or something.
I guess you either have to flash a custom rom or wait for an official update.
In the mean time, you could always use quick adb pusher. Much better than mounted usb storage (requires a working adb connection, which you should have if you have installed htc sync)
My Verizon Galaxy s6 doesn't get detected at all by my computer AT ALL. I've tried different cables, PC's, USB Debugging etc.. It just charges that's about it. I looked in Device manager etc on all the computers I've plugged it into and it doesn't show anything being connected. Also I even tried a OTG Usb flash drive that doesn't get detected by the phone neither and the LED on the usb doesn't light up. Only thing I haven't tried is to force put it in MTP I don't know how to do that, i'm on 5.1.1 not marshmallow so I don't think I have that option and I can't update the phone to 6.0.1 because I don't use the phone on Verizon's network to OTA and the phone won't connect to my computer so I cant update it that way. The phone charges good when connected to the wall outlet. The only thing I can think of is maybe the charger port is damaged in someway that is not allowing the phone to detect a computer is connected to it which is why I never get a MTP notification. Before I do surgery on this phone and attempt to replace the charger port do y'all know of any reason to why it won't connect to the pc or is there anything I can do to force MTP?

I just tried this still doesn't work
Smart Switch should be able to update it for you if you don't have service. Has to be in MTP mode though. Enable Developer options by going to About Phone -> tap Build Number a bunch of times and then change the USB connection type in Developer options. I think Smart Switch installs drivers. If none of that works maybe its a driver or OS problem.
So on my Galaxy A8 I have developer options unlocked with USB debugging on and when I plug in USB to my computer it asks me if i want to allow access to phone data. Deny obviously makes it so its only charging but accept and I can access files (all well and good so far). However when I go to Tap for other USB options it has options for Use USB for: Transferring files, USB tethering, MIDI, Transferring images, and charging phone only... however I can't actually change any of these options.... So why can't I change the options, and is Transferring images ptp?
Hi I just did tried it in USB Default Settings and it works for me

Yeah I'm in usb settings but the actual settings are locked out from changing... does anyone know why this is?
A8 USB
I have this problem too. I can 't choose for other usb options. I haven't enable USB debugging.
Hi, if you enable developer options then you can choose under developer options - default USB configuration - which option you want.
Phil
i tried all of those options and none of them work, is there any other ideas?
For some reason I can't connect my Pixel 4a to my PC with a USB C - USB A cable (or USB A - USB C, not sure what the official name is) , even though it worked fine on my previous phone.
Included with the phone is a USB C - USB A adapter, but I see no use for it unless you have a special USB A cable which I don't.
My motherboard does have a USB C slot on it and it does read my phone when I plug it in that way but for some weird reason it's really loose and doesn't stay connected unless I keep physical pressure on it.
I'm not going to update to Android 11 until the November update because I've heard the current build has a few bugs, but does anyone know if Android 11 fixed the USB C - USB A issue?
Have you made sure to switch to file transfer mode? It defaults to 'no transfer' mode when I plug into my laptop.
Most likely you need to toggle the phone connection settings to data transfer, originally it will be set to charge only I think.

I had this issue too. Windows file explorer would just crash after one or two files and stop transfer, no matter the size and type. (Yes I had file transfer selected on my phone ?)
Then windows update gave me a driver called "Google Inc. - Other Hardware - Kedacom KDB Composite Interface". I also updated to the newest firmware on the phone. No idea which of these did the trick or if it was the combo. However. Smooth sailing now ??
Hope this helps
(If windows update refuses to give you the driver, you can get it from Microsoft's update catalogue online. A Google search will do)
Ok it's completely messed up. When I search for USB settings it doesn't let me change anything at all, even though when I first got the phone I could and I changed it to transfer files. EDIT: No actually the setting that I changed was a developer option called "Default USB configuration" which I changed to transfer files but that still did nothing.
I just plugged in my phone and looked for the USB setting in the notification area but it wasn't there, but I noticed an option called "manage"
I went in there and noticed this. (see attachments) it's locked to be off and I can't change it. Very odd.

You're in notification settings. Try short tapping rather than long tapping to get the menu to pop up allowing you to select data transfer.
Changing default USB settings in developer options doesn't work for me either.

My point is that the notification that normally comes up when you plug in your phone to a computer to change to data transfer, charge only ect ect isn't even coming up because the firmware is stopping that notification from coming up altogether and I can't change it so it does.

Almost certainly a cable or host port issue. Swap cables and see what happens. Same for hosts/host ports. You're not going to have toggling options if the phone does not 'see' all expected lines/pins.
I had the same issue and changed to a different cord to fix the problem.
You have an non certified cable it seems, I've confirmed this pixel 4a works with only certain cables for usb transfer, also the usb a to c cable you have will not charge the device as well.
Get a cable from know manufacturers like Samsung, it worked for me.
Yeah turns out it was a cable. Strange how my cable worked with my old phone but not with the Pixel 4a
Had this issue with my new 4a just now. Cable was fine, even used the new cable that comes with it using a Usb C to Usb A adapter. Nothing worked. Upon opening Device Manager I found a new device called 'Kedacom USB Device'. After trying random things, I decided to uninstall the current drivers by right clicking on it and clicking 'Uninstall device'. Suddenly the phone connected, and even showed the adb prompt.
So for anyone still facing this issue, hopefully this solution might help
