[Q] porting App - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

Hi guys, have a general question about building an App for Android.
What makes it difficult to code an app for Android on different smartphones. Why are Apps in the Play Store don't accept my U11 but same App runs on some older Phone like Samsung S6?
It is not about complaining rather try to understand what is the reason. I'm not familiar in programming, just surprised about the fact.
Thanks for explaining a noob what's happen.

Usually not a lot. Try getting the app from apkmirror and see if it installs. Could be that it's built for arm, not arm64

Which app are you talking about? Is it an app by Samsung for Samsung phones?

No, it is Arrim One, I put some money in their Kickstarter campaign and end up with a thank you but our App would not support your HTC phone. They blame Google Play for non support "He told me that the Arrim one uses AR function to detect the objects, distance and do measurement. Thus the phone used must support ARCore function, which is developed by Google. All support devices are listed on Google website"
Is that mean the U11 would not working with Augmented Reality?

That seems to be the problem: HTC doesn't support ARCore with any of their phones. Maybe some licensing issue.

Thanks, I was happy found a phone which sued my expectations for daily use now have to put my eye on upcoming technologies.

Hi. I have bought Arrim One on Kickstarter too. It is great idea behind the concept, however the implementation is bad. I have had LG G5 wich is not supported to be run ARCore, so I change ROM to RR and apply some app package trough Magisk (thanks to good job for RR team as well as Magisk creators and other clever people from community) Anyway, I have got ARCore working on LG G5, but not Arrim One app. So I have decided to buy Moto One Zoom as officialy approved by Arrim Team (https://www.arrim.net/) Now I have finished with new phone, Arrim One app still not working and developer of Arrim One app not answering...

Cyanogen hired by Samsung

"Looks like Google wasn’t the only one getting a huge acquisition today. While they were off buying MotorolaMobility today Samsung was busy hiring yours truly — Steve Kondik (aka Cyanogen himself)."

Wonder what this is going to mean for future development for CM roms.
Why would it mean anything? Do you really think Cyanogenmod is his day job? He'll keep working on it in his spare time, like he has since day 1.
Of course, even if Cyanogen had to drop out completely, CM has a whole team of people behind it, not just him.
I know it's not his day job, but it may be a conflict of interest with his new one.

Like what if they try to tell him he can't develop for other phones? Hmm...bad thoughts.
Id like to say this is a good thing for the future of CM and modding in general, but I have a bad feeling about it.

Why? Cm7 and custom roms in general are used by a tiny percentage if the phone-buying population. It's difficult to think about, but a good 95% of people that own android phones have no idea what rooting is, will never update the operating system even if an ota us pushed, and possibly don't even know their phone its android. All they know is that their phone is T-Mobile and it lets them check facebook. If they're feeling really adventurous, they might even download angry birds.
These are the kinds if people that Samsung makes its money off of.

you all are thinking in 2D. cyanogen mod will become the "test" environment for samsung. they get free "testing" from tons of users and then they will package and deliver the final product on their phone without having to root. that would make the most sense to me so they should encourage cyanogen mod development.

ya that would be nice. i guess we'll see how samsung behaves. they can be like redhat that offers fedora for free but then they have the enterprise version redhat that they sell. or they can be like oracle who bought our sunmicro and then pretty much ended open office. But i guess open office now diverged into libre office so its not all bad. i guess cyanogen will continue one way or another.
CyanogenMod is a self running system. Download AOSP and convert it to specific devices.
Plus he's one Guy out of a whole team. I'm sure he doesn't touch every device. I wonder if he even touched the G2x?
Although I think this is good news. Perhaps they are just working with Samsung to setup an automated system like the CM team have now... nightlies across multiple devices running the latest Google code. Just tweaked here and there.

"While Kondik says CyanogenMod and Samsung won’t have anything to do with one another, it’s easy to think his background in user interface tweaking and phone customization will influence Samsung’s software design. Especially after the company sent Kondik and a number of other CyanogenMod hackers free Galaxy S2 handsets well before the wide release of the phone."

Well that settles it, Samsung clearly cares about its reputation with advanced users, and shutting down cm7 is about as hostile as it's possible to be.

Too bad Samsung sucks donkey balls as far as support and continued updates go.... Cyanogen was the guy that helped the companies like Samsung because they never provided continued support for their devices. Hopefully Cyanogen helps them improve their quality, but if not I hope he doesn't do it for free on the side.

I understand the hate towards Samsung during its Behold II days but since then it has gotten better and better until they became the most innovative Android manufacture recently. Their processors continue to own the competition. Everyone wants to get a hold of their displays and NAND memory and every single itteration of TW has gotten less and less intrusive. Their most recent flagship phone, the GSII has already received numerous updates. I don't know what type of update tine frame you would like our phones to get but quite frankly, all update timeframes suck if you buy a US branded phone. If you want to blame someone for our updates then blame our carriers. Updates over seas come out in a timely fassion. The European Sensation has already received 2 but the US Sensation hasn't received one.
So I ask you. What company in your opinion is good with updates and why?

CyanogenMod Phone

Hi All
Companies like HTC , Samsung & LG ...ect each one developing their own special Android Rom to differentiate their products from others.
I wish to see things in the opposite side, like why we can't see something like CyanogenMod Phone, we saw something like HTC First (Facebook phone), pure Android with Facebook application, but why people in CyanogenMod until now didn't try to go for a company like HTC and let HTC for example make their phone.
I like CyanogenMod but, mostly it will not work like the stuck rom, because of that I removed every CyanogenMod I installed it after few days from trying it, in spite of that I loved each CyanogenMod rom I have installed .
whish people in CyanogenMod listen to me
I heard that in China Miui made their smartphone and they released 3 smartphones until now, I know it is such a big step but they can give it a try
Guys, do you agree with me ?
They just might make their own phone....
Sounds good, which company is gonna do it?
you're right, with cyanogen mod phone we can have hard-hardware optimization, a tsock phone with no stock limits, like Xiaomi...
Cyanomgen is a team who builts the most stable roms. Their roms have became the baseroms for all the other roms for each device. Also canonical used cm files for ubuntu touch builds.
In other words cm iys a team who helps a lot of devices- whose oems have stopped supporting them- to stay alive.
It's very difficult to see a device which would be developed by Cyanogen Team and an Oem like HTC first as building an CM device would be against oem's philosophy and marketing. Evwn morw impossible is to see a device by CM as building a device from the zero is very very expensive

Well, they are a software team, I know that guys, the Roms created by CyanogenMod are the most popular in Android world,..
Ok let's say we don't want CyanogenMod to manufacturer a smartphone, but as "jordanishere" said, there should be a smartphone with CyanogenMod rom.
Why to install this rom I have to root my smartphone.
I'm looking for a solution like when I turn my phone on there should be an option weather to use CyanogenMod or what ever stock or company rom, same way you select one from different launchers .
so my smartphone will work smoothly without a missing drivers or stuff that doesn't work.
the manufacturing companies also have to open their minds .............. the company which will take such step ..I believe it will dominate the market.
I believe that in Android world we should have the ability to choose what we want, buying Android device from X company doesn't mean that I have to use their Rom

Oh boy you must be really new, This has always been the way OEM seperate themselves from each other. And with the open nature of android they have no reason not to make their own Distro of android. Also you have to understand that the missing drivers are not always an option as Base android or AOSP has rules about things being open and most OEM use closed sourced drivers because they dont make the drivers. A whole other company does and they are in control of how those drivers are used. As an example. HTC doesnt own all the software drivers in their device. The BT drivers are done by another company, the wifi drivers done by a different company, radio drivers another comapny and so on and so on.
Even CM changes the base android coding a whole lot from the base AOSP coding.

No major company is going to give you all those features so their tech support has to be on the phone 24/7 talking to idiots that fried their device.
That being said unless Cyogen people made their own device and marketed it themselves(read lots and lots of money) it wouldn't be the same at all except for the name.

Gear 2 to run Tizen !?!?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2014/02/18/samsung-gear-smartwatch-tizen-android/5583023/
Hmm, is this a good thing or a bad thing? I know with Android we can root and flash custom ROM's, will we have the same capability with Tizen? Is there a robust dev community that will develop ROM's and apps for Tizen, especially for something specialized like a smartwatch?
I'm definitely bummed if this is true and Samsung decides to go this way. I was patiently waiting for the Gear 2 with my wallet open, but this may change my mind if I can't tinker with it.
My stock touchwiz rom didn't run anything google related other than android. No google services. How is that a valid argument?
I don't think I'll mind if they do go down their own path, as long as all the features we want are there
Makes sense on one hand, but still hard to see them moving away from the already established android ecosystem

I know nothing about Tizen, in fact, just googled it to see what it was. Sounds like a Samsung mobile Linux based OS?? I'm not sure I like the sounds of going away from android either if that is what the Gear 2 is gonna run.
A full HTML5 OS ! YOU SAY THIS IS A BAD THING !?
That is going to be EPIC !!
This is similar to what ubuntu are trying to do with there phones..
I just HOPE Samsung dont ridicule it with road blocks and encryption and allow us as users to tinker with the OS !
HTML5 OS = Javascript coding = Very easy to program !
I come from a web development background, so this is right in my ball park..

I think of most web programs as boring, simple and not worth my time.
Thinking of anything on Facebook.
It is my understanding if you want any deep and complex programs you need access to the hardware layer.
Could be wrong heard for years how great HTML5 will be, maybe its time is now.
Besides I own many Android Apps this kind of commits me to Android.
Guess we all see next week, FYI I believe if Samsung really wants to sell Smartwatches the OS the watch is running is not as important as selling a device that will work fully on as many smartphones as possible. Compatible with only Samsung devices originally only the Note 3 are they crazy?
My bet is these rumours are just that rumours.
That article did not leave me with a happy feeling at all. Html5 does sound very nice for coding but the rest of it doesn't sit well.
There are already devices running android with no Google services ( kindle fire ). What do we do? Stuff Google on there anyway, because we like what they offer.
Samsung appears to want to keep there stuff even further from Google by switching OS. My gut feeling is that, if they want Google out of it so badly, they are going to try VERY hard to keep these watches locked down.
Secondly, all our android apps are not going to be available, so we'll be dependent on Samsung for everything, at least initially. Well, maybe we can hope that's where the html5 will be very attractive.
My guess is that if tizen really happens, one will still be able to flash android.
I'm somewhat excited to see it, as I've had conversations with the main ui developer in the past (rasterman of enlightenment). Very curious and guardedly hopeful.

I believe you would have access to the hardware layer with tizen apps... Otherwise that would just be weird and really restrictive on what you could code.
We shall see !
Working with simple javascript coding would be soooooooo nice, at the moment SMALI IS THE DEVIL I TELL YOU.

The plot thickens: http://www.techradar.com/us/news/po...e-in-multiple-flavors-including-tizen-1226006
Maybe we will see multiple versions, I hope one of them keeps Android. Next week will be very interesting.
Tizen is samsungs way into the market. Im sure it will be locked down tighter than knox and are bootloader though. But it has more potential for sure.
My question would be the compatibility with Android devices (such as the S5, which I will be getting)... and also apps for it would be VERY limited at the beginning. Right...? lol (Not a Dev so I wouldn't really know)
A bit of an aside: I get the feeling Tizen will stick around and slowly grow, but not at the expense of their large android base.. It can work for the gear, as it's an accessory device, but their smartphone market will be a different story..
China is a great example of a market where Google doesn't have a huge hold on... Tizen might work there, as there may not be a dependence on Google... A Tizen device partnered with one of their top search engines Baidu or Sohu might work... they could develop the platform, perfect it with a potential user base of millions; emerging markets might work well too, as Samsung could make low cost devices, and then generate some revenue from their own app store for paid apps..
Based on my observations of increasing integration of the Samsung app store on their android devices, I always wondered if all of that was in the works for if they strayed away from using Google's licensed model... Tizen seems to further that suspicion..

This is my question as well? One with think that with Samsung have pretty much ALL android devices, that they would want this to be cross compatible. Whether that's possible I have no idea, it's not like Tizen is just an overlay of android like Touchwiz, guess we'll see?

Getting Gear 2 to work on non Samsung phones

Now that the whole gear series has gone all Tizen on us.. what is the chance that they will work with non Samsung phones?
Is it going to be like now where you just get the Gear Manager apk working on the other phones and you are good to go? or is it going to be more complicated?
Anyone know anything about this Tizen crap at all?
Shouldn't matter. The thing holding back compatibility is that touchwiz is required on phone
so it should work on non samsung phones just like gear 1?
It already works, only a few thing are missing.
Check gear2neo qa subforum for the working gear manager apk !
It works with my nexus but I dont see the camera app on my Gear 2 Neo and I cant install any 3rd party apps on my watch like evernote and zite.
A little useless...

You sound a lot like myself and enjoy all those features that others call "gimmicks". A watch with all the features is exactly why I stuck with the Gear. I wouldn't put it past them to include a front facing camera (even for just the Smart Stay feature alone). But then again, sometimes you have to just stick with something and enjoy what you have. A watch with an IR blaster, Camera, and handling phone calls is a great start for my first... um.. watch? lol... thanks for the advice! =D
p.s. The video just lost some of my interest for Android Wear... thanks for posting that! Im glad Samsung took it to the next level already.

Don't ask me why, but I believe that watch won't be a flagship product as Gear.
It would be like a WP-like device for Samsung. Samsung also makes WP devices, but they hardly give much attention to that compared to Galaxy devices. Why do you think that Samsung wants Android Wear devices to succeed? They have invested in Tizen, and they want to people to buy into that instead of Android Wear devices. This also gives them a big incentive to control the whole ecosystem with Tizen-based devices.

Thats a good point, but on the other hand, the tables are turned in this case. WP has like what, 4% market share, while Android has around 54% or so? It makes sense not to put too much love into WP. In this case, its the opposite where Tizen is .001% (thats a random guess...lol) and Android is way in the lead.
Luckily they talk to each other nicely, and I am assuming Tizen relies mostly on HTML5 and CSS to run apps so its more widely compatible (correct me there if I am wrong). I just know as much time, money and development they have put into Tizen, I could guess (and this is a guess) that they have already spent at least double in android development. I cant see them dismissing this on the same level as WP.
You did make a good point though, we can all tell they really REALLY want Tizen to succeed. lol

NOTE: This discussion might be OT, but I feel it's important.
You bring up very valid points, I appreciate that. It's good to have such discussions. BTW, Android has around 81% market share (worldwide) according to last IDC numbers.
Yes, Tizen relies of HTML5 and CSS. You have the option to make web apps and also native apps. Gear will (atleast initially) use Web runtime.
The reason why Samsung is investing in Tizen is purely from future perspective. Android doesn't give them total control of the ecosystem. Just have a look at present Android -- Google control Android. If I am brutally honest - the best parts of Android are not open. Google services, apps, maps, youtube, search are not open. You just can't have app store without taking all other google services along with that. Samsung doesn't like that as it limits their chances to create a serviceline of their own. Samsung would love to have have users do everything within their ecosystem. Like after getting a Samsung phone, they would want the users to buy the apps from their store (not Google Play), purchase music from them, rent videos from them etc., So how they plan to do it? They have now tie-ups with Amazon for books, tie-up with Yahoo for various web apps, Nokia Here as default map applications, 7digital, Slacker etc., Samsung also have to think what happens if google decides to keep Android for themselves? or start putting strict conditions to use their services?
Check this Tizen Whitepaper. Some very interesting statements --
Tizen’s open governance – which is designed to prevent any single entity from controlling the platform – will help it avoid the pitfalls of previous broad-based industry initiatives, which ultimately suffered from perceived vendor control.

It's not Apple or Microsoft that they are targeting, Google/Android is the target.
Works with Sony Xperia Z Ultra
I can connect with My Sony Z Ultra which is Android 4.3.
But, some functions are not working.

WOW ...kinda speechless on that white paper. It makes sense... so many are putting all their eggs in one basket. That was the semi beauty of Android... you dont like Samsung, and you can leave that brand and as long as your on Android, all the apps and etc you paid for follow you.
Do you think the entire reason Android Wear exists is because it (Tizen) scares the fire out of Google? I mean look at what all Tizen is capable of running from the G1 to G2/N ...the exact same CPU, and hardware... I think this even has a smaller battery than the previous with nearly double battery life. The dots are starting to connect! ...Let the content owners keep the data...(Amazon for books, tie-up with Yahoo for various web apps, Nokia Here as default map applications, 7digital, Slacker etc.,) and not depend on 1 "play/app store" ...regardless of OS...
I almost want to believe Android is so heavy on the resources that this is why they are wanting to "keep it simple"?

It's an interesting topic, but I sometimes feel it could get boring for other folks. But following are my own views in this topic:
1] Google would want all vendors simply following their guidelines and simply fighting on the basis of price (similar to laptop vendors). Just look at computers - everything runs Windows and with very little chance of customization. Vendors like HP/Lenovo/Dell simply compete on price or or make more powerful hardware. But look at the profit margin in that industry. Only Microsoft makes money from PC business! That's a cold hard fact. Google wants to do same in mobile space what MS did to desktop computers. Difference is that MS sold software, google wants to engulf everyone in their web services.
2] Samsung doesn't want to be a generic mobile vendor, say like those Chinese companies. The moment Samsung become like everyone else, why would you pay premium for Samsung phones?? That's exactly how Apple is able to always demand premium price for their hardware. At all times, they sold decent hardware with unique software. Samsung knows if you can't be different/unique in this market, you would be left to play the price game. And very soon, the profit margin will decrease to bare minimum.
On Tizen, I think it's pretty good foundation that they have. If you check Tizen 3.0 UI, you will see that they have also adopted flat UI design (Sept 2013 information). We will know which way this is going by Q2. First Tizen phone is supposed to come out by that time.
This is Tizen 2.2. 3.0 is supposed to be come by Q3.

Have you gotten 3rd party apps to work on your Gear 2? I mean do you have access on your device to Samsung Apps so you can download apps made for gear 2? I got Nexus 5 and all i can use are the default pre installed apps.

htc m8

So guys what do you think of the new m8.....
Htc has approached with new strategy to make certain apps like blinkfeed available to all android devices...also sense tv....
I think that's bad coz those stuff made htc unique..
The apps are available on the Play Store, but not for all Android devices. I have no doubt that the HTC apps are still tied to the Sense framework, and therefore not compatible with other manufacturer's devices.
According to the following article, Blinkfeed will only be available for the M8, and the other apps for the "latest" HTC devices:
http://phandroid.com/2014/03/25/htc-one-2014-apps-google-play-edition/
This nice thing about the apps being linked to the Play Store, is that HTC can potentially update the apps without having to push it out as an OTA to the OS. Something other manufacturers have been doing for some time now.
Yeah I agree. It frees up those apps to be updated without major updates being pushed to the devices. And like Redpoint said, Sense apps are unable to be used on non-sense (no pun intended) devices due to them being heavily tied into the Sense framework. All in all, it's a good decision by HTC, it's at least a step forward where they desperately need one.
so that means current generation devices will be able to update via play store..... hoping fr it

That is right up there with "640K is all the memory you will ever need".
I can guarantee that manufacturers will keep increasing processor specs, since its a marketing bullet point. They will always want you to think the latest or upcoming phone is "better" so you keep upgrading. And software developers will continue to find new ways to suck up processor resources as long as manufacturers keep pushing the specs.

I can't really agree at all there. Processors will continue to evolve for as long as they exist, or as long as the technology permits it. That's the nature of technology. Never in the history of computing has there been a stage where the development of components as important as the processor has stopped or stalled, ever. And that will not happen. In fact, the speeds at which components like this evolve only increases with time.
another area whr htc could hv done better was display....htc is best when it comes to display but nothing major in sunlight conditions......

Can you point out a manufacturer or phone that does better in sunlight? Displays work by emitting light, so its going to get washed out by sunlight (that pesky sun puts out a lot of light). There isn't a way around that, unless somebody comes up with a brand new technology like a color version of the Kindle's Paperwhite display.
With existing technologies, the only way to make a display more visible in sunlight is to make it brighter, which uses vastly more battery.

Get more people using your ecosystem, and they're more likely to buy your products Same reason Google puts out a Gmail app for the iPhone, and Apple made an iTunes for Windows when iTunes mattered. I mean, it's dubious if, in this case, it would be effective, but it really can't hurt them much. No one's buying an HTC phone strictly because of BlinkFeed, so they're not losing anything by it. But at the very least they'll gain name recognition.

Google makes most of their money from data farming and marketing. So Gmail and other Google apps on any platform is to their direct benefit. In fact, Android primarily exists for that purpose. Google makes little, if any money from the sale of Android phones.
iTunes for Windows, since that helped sell iPods and later iPhones.
I see no direct benefit for HTC, although as you say it can't hurt. I agree that folks aren't buying HTC phones for BlinkFeed, the manufacturers for some reason still tout their customizations and skins as what "differentiates" them from the competition. For me, its always been superior hardware design that has drawn me to HTC.

The license fees for Google apps probably cover the development costs of the product.
Im sure Google is making a fair mint from the Google Play Store though. Their commission per sale will quickly end up with them profiting billions a year from it.
