CyanogenMod Phone - General Topics

Hi All
Companies like HTC , Samsung & LG ...ect each one developing their own special Android Rom to differentiate their products from others.
I wish to see things in the opposite side, like why we can't see something like CyanogenMod Phone, we saw something like HTC First (Facebook phone), pure Android with Facebook application, but why people in CyanogenMod until now didn't try to go for a company like HTC and let HTC for example make their phone.
I like CyanogenMod but, mostly it will not work like the stuck rom, because of that I removed every CyanogenMod I installed it after few days from trying it, in spite of that I loved each CyanogenMod rom I have installed .
whish people in CyanogenMod listen to me
I heard that in China Miui made their smartphone and they released 3 smartphones until now, I know it is such a big step but they can give it a try
Guys, do you agree with me ?

They just might make their own phone....

Sounds good, which company is gonna do it?

you're right, with cyanogen mod phone we can have hard-hardware optimization, a tsock phone with no stock limits, like Xiaomi...

Cyanomgen is a team who builts the most stable roms. Their roms have became the baseroms for all the other roms for each device. Also canonical used cm files for ubuntu touch builds.
In other words cm iys a team who helps a lot of devices- whose oems have stopped supporting them- to stay alive.
It's very difficult to see a device which would be developed by Cyanogen Team and an Oem like HTC first as building an CM device would be against oem's philosophy and marketing. Evwn morw impossible is to see a device by CM as building a device from the zero is very very expensive

You're asking why a free software development team hasn't tried to mass-manufacture a cellphone? It's a whole different game my man, cyanogenmod is not a multi-billion dollar corporation.

Well, they are a software team, I know that guys, the Roms created by CyanogenMod are the most popular in Android world,..
Ok let's say we don't want CyanogenMod to manufacturer a smartphone, but as "jordanishere" said, there should be a smartphone with CyanogenMod rom.
Why to install this rom I have to root my smartphone.
I'm looking for a solution like when I turn my phone on there should be an option weather to use CyanogenMod or what ever stock or company rom, same way you select one from different launchers .
so my smartphone will work smoothly without a missing drivers or stuff that doesn't work.
the manufacturing companies also have to open their minds .............. the company which will take such step ..I believe it will dominate the market.
I believe that in Android world we should have the ability to choose what we want, buying Android device from X company doesn't mean that I have to use their Rom

Oh boy you must be really new, This has always been the way OEM seperate themselves from each other. And with the open nature of android they have no reason not to make their own Distro of android. Also you have to understand that the missing drivers are not always an option as Base android or AOSP has rules about things being open and most OEM use closed sourced drivers because they dont make the drivers. A whole other company does and they are in control of how those drivers are used. As an example. HTC doesnt own all the software drivers in their device. The BT drivers are done by another company, the wifi drivers done by a different company, radio drivers another comapny and so on and so on.
Even CM changes the base android coding a whole lot from the base AOSP coding.

No major company is going to give you all those features so their tech support has to be on the phone 24/7 talking to idiots that fried their device.
That being said unless Cyogen people made their own device and marketed it themselves(read lots and lots of money) it wouldn't be the same at all except for the name.

It's Oppo N1.
Lastly, at the event Oppo announced their rumored partnership with Cyanogen. While no further details were given, the Oppo N1 is going to be able to run pure Android thanks to CyanogenMod. It's speculated that customers will be able to choose between Color OS and CyanogenMod upon ordering the N1 from the Oppo website.

Android on the Arrive/7 Pro

Searched, and haven't found a thread on this.
I'm due for an upgrade in July on my Sprint line, and I was almost certain I was going to go with the EVO 3D (when it comes out), but then I saw the HTC Arrive and kinda liked it. The thing is, though, that I really like Android as well. I know dual-booting Android was possible on the Touch Pro 2, so I was wondering if it's possible to do the same thing with the Arrive/7 Pro, or if having Windows Phone 7 prevents it from being able to do this. Thanks!
It cannot be done as of now.
Sent from my T7575 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
The HTC 7 Pro has the same SoC as HD7 and HD2, and both of them already have Android.
Why Android still can't be ported for 7 Pro?
I'm pretty sure that hardspl must be available before we can flash custom roms on our pros. More imporantly some sort of application like haret for WM6 but for WP7 would probably also need to be developed first. Hopefully some fine day it will all be possible like on the HD2.
i was looking at how they dual boot with hd2, and it looks like they boot from sdcard, and flash wp7. we shouldn't need to flash wp7, but booting android is sdcard boot. so i see no reason why we can't boot from sdcard, unless we need a special boot loader, and the boot loader they need doesn't have the access to wp7 to get the boot loader working properly and that goes beyond me please correct me if I'm wrong.
why would anyone want to put an unsecure, laggy, fragmented, built from stolen code OS like Android on a fine device such as the arrive? wp7 is leaps and bounds superior to Android and once mango arrives it will be even better. thus the need to do this isn't necessary.

and also many articles that say the opposite. Dont just spew out stuff and say it as fact. Other people have different preferences.
iOS is just as fragmented as Android. Only thing is that Apple controls the fragmentation so dumbass developers dont try making completely universal apps when they dont know how the hell to do that.
And fragmentation isnt an issue for consumers. Its perfectly fine. So i dont understand your bias against it unless you are a developer.

I really don't care whether you or anyone says android is worse or better than wp7 but it would be nice to switch if one wants to. so when there is a thread discussing the possibility to port android on the 7 pro, there is no need for no-sayers, since they can occupy their brains with other stuff.
i would love to see this, but especially since there is only 1 sd-card, its either flashing one or the other i think...
Not possible on wp7 YET

Hello all,
I am new to mobile phones and I would like to post some questions, which are general in fact, but closely related to the topic and the Arrive device.
I would like to have another OS on it and I have found a way to change the SD cart it is running with, so I should be able to change or modify it with no trouble.
I imagine that I could find another HTC device with identical hardware and deploy it's ROM to this one in a manner similar to HD2's approach. I am so new that I already can feel how dumn is that ... but still.
I need to clarify some basics in order to know what to look for. First of all what does the firmware does and how it is related to the OS. Can I imagine it is something like BIOS, which controls the main hardware like processor, ram, telephony, etc? If so what stops me of formatting the SD and booting another system from it on the same hardware.
Another thing is what the ROM contains and how it is related to the OS. I am with the impression that it has everything in it -- OS distributive, firmware backup and bootloader maybe. If that is correct am I free to cook a ROM that contains the same firmware (as I imagine it like a BIOS alternative), the bootloader of another system and its distributive? Of course the ROM that is already on the device may and most probably will try to stop me, so I will need to somehow format it.
I do not express myself too good due to lack of expertise, but I know computers and I believe you will know what to tell me to straighten my thoughts.
Thank you in advance for any information you provide.
Sincere,
drel
At this stage, pesonally, I think wp7 is the best os to me. At it is not laggy as android does and looks more beautiful than iOS...

I think what you meant to say was "Why would anyone have a different opinion than my awesome opinion?" As much as I love WP7 I'd love to be able to use Android with this chassis. Choice is always good. There is no Android phone with this keyboard.

Bump. Having no Bluetooth SPP has just pissed me off for a year. About to get an Galaxy Nexus S come May, so I don't mind tinkering with my Arrive for now.
hello?
Any news about dual booting android on arrive / HD7 Pro? I read the thread and some users just talk crap. " Why this? Why that?" Why not, may I ask. I Love WP7, i really think that beats the crap out of everything else. But why can't we dream of having android too? As far as I know, Android has at the moment much more apps ( free and payed ones ) available than WP7. My brother-in-law has veetle ( just an example ) on his Xperia S, and he can watch live football/soccer which I can't cuz there is no veetle available. And who can name veetle, can name many others too. The point is: Combining the best of two worlds would makes fully profit from our beloved phones, which we payed ( at least I did ). I really hope that some news about this stuff.
Best Regards

Before you ask a question, please search the forum first, therefore other members will not give you harsh answers.
If you are looking for answers to rooting your device, please go here:

If you are searching for rom developments, please go here:

If you are searching for information on Ice Cream Sandwich, best luck is to search google or in the general section. There is NO certain release date of when ICS will be available, but there are rumors and some information that states it will be in Q1 of 2012.
Good luck to you.

No, I was being mean. There's not event tomorrow and ICS is but a distant dream. Enjoy your device now and don't sweat the OS version number. ICS is not going to give much more over what you have now.
I'm sort of with the OP in wanting to know about any rom based on ICS. I've searched the forums and google to no avail. I'm seeing other devices getting a version of CM9, but nothing for the Skyrocket yet.
So, my question is this: Is anyone working on an ICS rom for the Skyrocket such as CM9? If I had the know-how I'd be all over that since we have such a great and powerful phone. I know AT&T and Samsung will eventually release ICS, but it'll never compare to the likes of CyanogenMod.
No no ones working on it. Why make a hacked up version. Thats not very functional. When our update is just around the corner. We will see ics, and mabye cm9 but.not until theres a leak for the skyrocket or the actuall update.

Not saying this to start a flamewar or anything but why are so many people with talent focusing on old roms and tweaks and not ICS? IMO this is what is hurting Android with better development etc, it seems like iOS hacking and tweeking seems to be more tight-knit and innovative, where Android seems to just have (almost) the same thing over and over again.
Now, I am not saying it is the same, there are obviously very difficult functions and programming that needs to be done, but I don't get why all efforts by everyone wouldn't be focused on ICS since it is what Android needs, a fresh new OS that could change the game.

so you want us to randomly pull kernel source for ICS (linux kernel 3.0+) out of our ass?
samsung has not provided us with enough driver libraries/binary blobs that work properly with AOSP GB, let alone ICS.
the problem here is the manufacturers. they control the proprietary hardware/drivers we need to focus attention on something. we could hack something together, but it wouldnt be worth a crap, and by the time we got something working half decent, Official would be dropped on us with source and we would have to basically start fresh....
tl;dr: it is not worth the time it takes to try to hack something together until we have 'something' from samsung.

Android itself is OPEN. you can go and build your very own version of 4.0 ICS right now from source code. there are very few phones you can STABLY and RELIABLY run it on though.
The NEXUS line of phones exists for a reason. they are untouched by carriers (verizon teabagged the Galaxy Nexus a little), and do not have some stupid overlay on them. they are developer devices in that it is the first phone to get android updates straight from google (no manufacturer interference required).
every other phone is tainted with a manufacturer's UI. Touchwiz on Samsung phones (galaxy nexus is a samsung but they provided the hardware not the software), Sense on HTC, 'non-blur' on Motorola, whatever Sony calls theirs...lol, LG, etc
on top of that tainted Android interface is a carrier branding or lockdown (doesnt apply to the entire world, but im only referring to US here)
so google releases new version of Android
manufacturers build phone, and customize android to fit their model (this is where android almost stops being OPEN)
carriers get a hold of the manufacturers build of android and tweak and modify it themselves (more than likely they just tell the manufacturers what they want), as you know they love to include bloat and lock it down from the user
you receive your android phone after it has gone through all those steps....long process huh? we dont get updates to newer versions as quickly because of that long process...and they would rather us buy new phones instead of improving perfectly good hardware.
Android is open in the sense that manufacturers can use it however they wish, within reason. it is not necessarily meant to be 'open' to the average end user, and manufacturers dont want you messing with the phone they built. its the reason XDA is what it is today, albeit with roots deep in WinMo hacking.

How "free" is your android?

I bought my first android, a galaxy 3, about a year and a half ago... I was so excited I had a "mobile Linux" in my hand... Being a Linux user for some time I thought that I would have (almost) the same capabilities with my mobile....
After a one week I came down to earth. The only thing in common with Linux in android, is the Linux kernel. Let me explain:
In my pc, I can compile any Linux distro, or kernel, from the source, install it on my hardware, reboot, and have it working just as I want, with all the features I enabled/disabled during the build. When I started thinking of buying an adroid phone, I thought I could do exactly the same. Well, I was mistaken.
It's ok with me now. I discovered how android and Google works. But still something is not right.
The biggest "advantages" android has to offer were, and still are, that it is free (as in free speech, not free beer - thank you Mr. Stallman) and open.
Well IS it?
Google is giving away the source code, thus making it available for anyone to build it. Ok. The real problem is what you can do with the resulting build. In theory, if you flash a generic build to a phone, it should boot up and make calls. And that's it. Forget about GPS, wifi, Bluetooth. If you want to use them, you have to build a kernel with the source code provided by the OEMs and the best part is that the source has to be for the same version you are building. Thus it is almost impossible for an average user to build android for their device, if the OEM won't provide an official update to the version they want to build.
You'll say that the drivers are proprietary and OEMs don't give them. I can understand that, but what I really can't understand is why proprietary blobs for 2.3 won't work with android 4. I mean drivers are the same, aren't they? Yes, the kernels are different BUT hardware remains the same...
You'll say "get a Nexus". Yes, you as right it seems to be the best solution, but nexus one has the same fate as other phones.
A new android build only works in an emulator. I just wish it could work the same on every model. The OEMs don't have to open source drivers, just give us blobs that work with every android version. One other problem with some OEMs is the locked bootloader. I build android for a device, but due to locked bootloader I can't flash it....wait what? It is MY phone you piece of ****!!
So imo android is neither "free", nor "open". Where is freedom and openess when I can't flash any given device with any given android version? Sorry, but customisability and theming are just not enough.
Google also claims that android comes free of charge. Well, the source is, but the source alone, without being able to use it on a device, is useless. So, in order to have the latest android I have to pay roughly €500-€600 each year... (maybe once in two years if I choose nexus). Only I see a rip-off here? Google should work with OEMs and make generic builds to run on every device, just like Linux. Android is capable of this for sure.
I still like android, and continue to use it. It can't be compared to wp or ios. But I strongly believe that since we paid our devices we should be able to do whatever we want with it.
Thanks for reading guys and girls. These thoughts wee in my head for some time and I wanted to let them out...

You got point there, but nothing in this world is for free. Everybody needs to make money somehow. And that is the way of Google. I am glad with what is Android capable of and the extras we got from them. Compared to the other OS we can say that we are free
Well its pretty much the most "versatile" CELL OS outthere

Although OP is right, I consider Andorid much more 'Open' then iOS. Just the sheer number of people developing ROMs, kernels, etc. shows how much easier it is to develop for Android then iOS. How many custom ROMs are there for iOS? The answer is none. So while the separation of versions, different vendors, and different providers may be holding the platform back, nothing is perfect, and from a development perspective, we have to realize that Android id much more 'Free" then iOS.

Yes! That's absolutely right. I just wanted to point out that it would be best if we could treat android just like our Linux distros. Oh well, I'd like to believe that the time when we will have a trully open source phone is close...

I never said anything about changing the ui or the interaction with the phone. Just expanding its capabilities.

Android is definitely freeer than say iOS. However that comes at a price. The sheer amount of android devices and versions makes it harder for developers to work with it compared to iOS which is limited to a couple of devices.
It just depends on what you are happy to put up with as a user. Wiht Android you are not restricted to what you can do with the phone, whereas on iOS you are serverely restricted.

Open webOS 1.0 on Status/ChaCha

Would it be possible to port this? Now that it is open. This might be a better OS for the Status/Chacha.

Open WebOS is as open as is Android: the kernel and drivers must be supplied by the manufacturer or developer, and certain apps like 'phone', 'sms', 'mms'... are not part of the open distribution.
Think that Open WebOS must be ported to EXISTING WebOS devices...

Interesting, would be great on the ChaCha/Status because it is a very smooth OS and will work great with the keyboard.
I totally would enjoy to see this on the Chacha. Since WebOS ran on keyboard devices I hope that it will have better keyboard support than android.
I also noticed that someone was able to port WebOS to some other HTC Android device and used the drivers from Android. However, problem will be the drivers of course. :-/

The idea of the keyboard is what I was thinking. It would be a very similar experience on the chacha/status. Plus it is very fast.
it would be interesting to see a port of a totally different OS to the phone.
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/b2g/
for example.
but the amount of work it would entail would require a lot of very skilled developers, and a ton of research on the phone hardware as well as current available software.
I doubt it will ever happen - but it would be nice to see.
Honestly, at this point, I really wish that people would get together and make a CM10 port for the ChaCha/Status. I think it will improve performance and battery life even more than the current unofficial port of CM9.

CM10 should be out in the next couple of months. The problem is there are like 2 real good developers for the htc chacha/status and they have lives to live. So they don't constantly work on this stuff. Which sucks. this is a great phone and we need more devs

^ couldn't agree more. it's a beautiful phone, and it has so much potential. I only wish HTC would realize this, and support it more - or better yet, develop another version of it, which has a little more power out of the box.

This phone, with a dual core 1ghz processor same ram but 1gb would be nice and maybe just a little better screen. But just a dual core 1ghz processor and this becomes the best android phone in my opinion. I also have an atrix 4g but for most things I prefer this phone.
Unfortunately HTC said that it will discontinue to make phones with hardware keyboards...
However, I think the people that work on porting things to the HTC Chacha are limited. We could try to support them with some donations. But even if someone is willing to work on the port for some small amount of money we don't have any guarantee if the result of WebOS for the Chacha will be what we expect since it will depend on the drivers.
Also when they port CM10 to the chacha I really would like to see someone improving the keyboard support especially for the call functions. I gut 2 calls at the same time today and you can't even use the green phone key to switch between the calls since it just will open a new dialer insted of checking what is going on in the moment.
Would be nice of one of the developers to comment this here.
I will look into WebOS once someone else ports it to a ARMV6 phone. As the current phone which has WebOS so far is Galaxy Nexus, even the port for the Nexus isn't that great at the moment.
As for all the dev work, I think what we have at the moment is great for a lowend phone as we have CM7, CM9 and CM10 soon. Plus I'm going to start finishing some ROMs which I started couple of months ago. Donate to Adlx as he's keeping the dev work going on in his free time when he has Family also.

I already work on B2G for Chacha, and it didn't work. Later we saw it will not work as b2g (at least in the current state) doesn't support armv6.

[Q] Do samsung-free roms exist?

Just bought an S6 and if my past phones were any indication I will want to remove as much vendor android customization as possible.
I don't care about warranty and am happy to root/unlock/s-off/etc my phones.
How's development looking for the S6, has anyone produced a rom with the samsung stuff stripped out?
I don't need a ROM with gizmos, just the samsung stuff and preinstalled apps taken off.
They is a great topic , i was just talking to my coworkers from tmobile that im litterally gonna switch to the g3 or htc m8 because the development on here is so sad its driving crazy (yeah yeah, i know if i want a rom i should build it myself) well if i had the BRAINS that these developers have i would exploit my knowledge but because I dont have the knowledge then we can only depend on the developers...just imagine cm 12 running on a 64bit processor...jesus.... instant nerd boner... seriously... we need to use our phones full potential...if not then why the strong processsors for? Why all the specs... htc m8/moto X 2nd gen/Lg G3/nexus 5 (for that android M)
Any feedback? I feel like ppl are afriad to speak on this topic that they dont just so they dont get flamed... but someone has to stand up and bring it to attention...

I agree. I would love to see some cm/aosp. I think about switching to another device that can run it every day
Yeah, I agree to. I'm waiting for CM or AOSP rom. I want imagine a pure stock on my phone...But I thing maybe it's difficult with Knox or Samsung bloadware to make different rom who can run on our phone. All we have actually are based on Samsung rom... So wait and see...
The s6 has the least amount of preinstaled apps ... and a lot of them you can remove ... why do you people even buy phones from Samsung if you need to change every little detail about it ... maybe the best advice is that you make your own phone at home ....

I don't see how stripping out most of the features and adding on a buggy CM software is "getting the full potential" of the phone.
A 64 bit processor vs 32 is negligible anyway, and Cm, really? That's like equipping Iron Man's suit with a ZX spectrum computer.

OP, what you are looking for is called Android Open Source Project or AOSP for Short. AOSP is the Google's Android Source Code Repository. It has a code base for your phone's Processor (SoC). There are several Developers who utilize this Google Source to create Custom Roms with Features that are not available in Samsung's Touchwiz rom. You can review this list
for currently available Roms on your Device. Essentially what is called "Play Store Edition" of a device, is basically the same thing as regular Device but has AOSP Rom.
Unfortunately this thread is a duplicate of Does Exynos = no custom ROMs? So please carry on the Discussion over there,
Thread closed.
