New Gear S3 Frontier - No Samsung Pay? - Samsung Gear S3

Hi All,
I'm in the US and just ordered a new S3 Frontier from Amazon. Pressing the back button twice did not open Samsung Pay, (it didn't do anything at all). It is not available in the new Samsung "Wearables" android app. I have an S8 running Android 8.0 and Samsung Pay works perfectly there.
I also noticed that when I connect a BT headset to the phone, no audio comes out, or it routes the audio to my phone's speakers. I have to disconnect the phone from the watch in order to use Spotify or hear music from my headset. Shouldn't I be able to have a BT headset connected to the watch, and then the watch connected to the phone? I can't get this scenario working so that I could answer a call on the headset, if it came through for example.
Also - any cool tips for a new S3 owner are welcome. I'm keep browsing the threads
Cheers

Did you order the US version of the Gear S3 or the international version? Also, you don't press the back button twice to activate Samsung Pay, you press and hold it.

Sorry, I meant holding the back button did nothing.
My Amazon order says US version in the description. However, I just tried to register the serial on Samsung.com and it can't find it. Wonder if Amazon sent me the wrong one?
Is there another way to check? If Samsung Pay doesn't work on this one, I guess I'll have to exchange it.

Check the model number of your Gear S3 - the US version is: SM-R760NDAAXAR. And you could exchange it if it is not the US version that you ordered - but I would suggest you just try changing the CSC code first - see the thread on that, it's easy to do.

Some instructions re: connecting a Bluetooth headset: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-33520

Thanks for the input. When I dialed *#1234# the full model number appeared as: R760XXU2CRH1. I think that's the international version right? Are there are any main differences aside from S Pay? I thought the international one has no warranties or something as well. Perhaps a lower resale value as well?

FYI - I returned it to Amazon. It was the International version. I noticed that I could not register for the warranty on Samsung.com with the serial number.
When I received the real US version, I noticed some different packaging and a different charger. I now have Samsung Pay working

Yea, most of the international versions of phones and wearables aren't covered by warranties if purchased in the US. Somewhere in small writing Amazon usually mentions that.

Just Bought Tab 2 7.0 - A Few Questions...

Hey... so I bought the SGT2 7, the garnet red, 8gb version, JB 4.1.1, and have a couple questions.
1 - The speaker placement is different than most pics I've seen, and even in a different place than the case that came with it! In most of the pics the speaker is on the front of the tab, at the top of portrait mode next to the camera. On my tab the speakers are on the edge, at the bottom in portrait mode and there's 2 of them at each corner. Also the display model at Costco had the speakers on the bottom edge but they boxes showed it on the top front. What's up with that? Did they change the position of it? Is bottom edge the newer version? Do you think it's better on bottom edge or top front?
2 - The main reason I bought it is to use in my car to replace my car stereo/nav unit. I have a 64gb card in my phone that has a lot of music on it. I would like to be able to control that music using my Tab and stream the music from my Tab to the car via BT. Is that possible to control the music that's on my phone and have it output via the Tab? I'm having issues streaming audio using BT from my phone to car, haven't figured out the issue yet so I'm hoping it will work with the Tab, otherwise I'll use the aux cable. I do want the music output to be from the Tab so the phone can stay in my purse unless I need it on the charger.
If it makes any difference I will have the Tab tethered to my phone, rooted HTC Rezound, so that I can use it for internet radio, navi, etc....
Also, heard about TabletTalk. Found DeskSMS. Any rival apps? Suggestions?
3. I saw an older post that said IR wasn't working on custom ROMs, is it working now? That's the other reason I justified buying this, it is supposed to be my univseral remote for all my audio/video equipment at home, working pretty well except it seems the only "other devices" are Apple TV and Roku. Would like to use it for Xbox too since I use that for streaming from pc atm. Is there a better app?
Not planning on rooting the Tab until I'm sure it's going to suit my needs. Costco gives me 90 days to play with it and decide if I want to keep it, so that's nice.
Thanks for any help.

To send send/receive SMS from tablets, laptops and desktops you could take a look at PopMyPhone. It uses email to bridge between the phone and any email capable device so there are no additional apps required on the tablet. Search the Play store for PopMyPhone

Yeah, I had it the first time I plugged it in then it disappeared. Then I kept unplugging and plugging back in then switched ends of the cable around and still nothing ever again. Came inside and tried my earbuds and had no issues at all.
The main reason I bought it is to use for my car. Ugh. It doesn't make any sense. I can see there may be reasons why bluetooth streaming might be an issue with my phone since it's rooted and running a global leak, but even that works with the cable no problem.

[Q] Disastrous experience with Gear 2 paired to a non-Samsung phone?

Hi all!
When I bought my Gear 2 Neo to use with my HTC One M8, I knew it was not officially supported, but I read some encouraging posts here on XDA, so I decided to give it a go. So far, my overall experience has been completely dreadful:
Battery Life! When I saw 30% per hour drain on my Gear 2 (with not too much of "display on" time), I thought I've got a defective device. However, things came immediately back to normal when I disconnected the Gear from the phone. Did anyone else have such experience? Solved, issue with the specific custom ROM.
Using in conjunction with Bluetooth earpiece is a complete nonsense. I don't want to receive calls on the Gear when I have the earpiece connected to the phone. But guess what, you can't have them connected at the same time! WTF?
Where are the apps? All pre- and post-release materials suggested Gear 2 comes with plenty of useful apps, but where are they? I'm particularly interested in Runtastic, but, according to their Facebook page, their Gear 2-compatible app hasn't been released yet, and no ETA so far. Runtastic claims Samsung didn't ask if their app was available before putting its name on the press release. WTF?
No alarm functionality on the watch itself without a need in the phone, and non-Samsung phone alarm doesn't get propagated to the Gear.
I'd really appreciate if other Samsung and non-Samsung phone users could share their experiences with regards to the areas above.
Thanks!

Wow that's a lot. Let's see if I can come up with some answers..
1. I hear that battery drain is a known bug when connected to the HTC one. Not sure why it happens but it's been reported for mostly that device.
2. I'm pretty sure in order to use the Bluetooth earpiece with the Gear you need to connect the gear to your phone, go into Settings on your Gear 2, Go into Bluetooth, and connect it there so instead of having both attached to the phone, you have it Phone>Gear>Bluetooth (IE NOT Bluetooth>Phone<Gear|)
3. Samsung Apps store is not available on NON Samsung devices.
4. This is true and many people are looking for a fix. Nothing can be changed right now.

Strange indeed. Could be related to the Sense flavour of BT stack. I have a spare Google device (Galaxy Nexus), will try the Gear with it to see if the battery drain issue is cured.

According to the process described here, the audio device needs to be paired with the phone and not the Gear, while the Gear is somehow able to make the phone switch between the phone audio coming through it to the earpiece. There is also this video describing how it works from the user perspective.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work this way with my HTC One M8. It looks like it uses ONLY the "Phone Audio" profile while connected to the Gear, which effectively disables any other device relying on the same profile (e.g. the earpiece) to connect to the phone. If, nevertheless, you force the phone to connect to the earpiece, the Gear gets disconnected. I suspect, on Samsung devices, a different BT protocol (probably BLE) is used for communicating to the Gear, so it can stay connected to the phone while the "Phone Audio" is taken by another device. This could also explain the power drain above, as BLE is supposed to be much more energy efficient. The question is, of course, how to make HTC One to use it (BLE is obviously supported by the device).
It is possible to connect my earpiece to the Gear, but only as media device (my earpiece supports this profile as well). In that case it can be used for listening to music played on the Gear. But it doesn't help in the phone call scenario. In any case, the "transfer to earpiece" operation described in both tutorials (you can see the corresponding icon on the right side of the Gear screen in the video above) is not available, no matter if the earpiece is paired to the phone or paired/connected to the Gear directly (the icon is greyed out).
Again, I'll try to put a custom BLE-enabled ROM on my Galaxy Nexus (standard ROMs don't enable BLE on that device, despite the fact the hardware is present) to see if it behaves any differently.

This is true, but there are good people around who can make them available for outsiders like us... The problem is Runtastic app for Gear 2 or Fit (not to be confused with Gear 1) is not available yet, according to Runtastic themselves, and no ETA so far. This is despite Samsung press releases. Had I known this before buying my Gear, I would have given it second thought...

This is particularly annoying. What I really don't understand is why any other app notifications do get to the Gear, but alarms (even from 3rd party apps) don't. I'm completely baffled by that!

THX,that's encouraging to hear. :good:
One thing I've noticed w/my M8 & GEAR FIT:
If I'm not using the FIT (leave @ home etc...., out of range), the battery life takes a little bit of a hit. Otherwise, yesterday for example, battery life was stellar, still @ 50% after 18 hrs of total phone on-time.
Apparently, the FIT MANAGER app cannot be force closed, only disabled, so, I'll just do that when not using the FIT.
As for the GEAR MANAGER (for GEAR/GEAR2/NEO) it can be force closed.
So,I'm remaining optimistic regarding battery life once my GEAR2 arrives, especially since such is a YMMV, not only w/this discussion, but battery life in general.

I was quite surprised and satisfied with it as well!
I downloaded the sdk and was able to view the log of the gear and I can see there are a lot of errors for s health and other samsung services so if official support comes through from samsung, id imagine battery life will get better.
OK, reading all the replies, it is apparent nobody else has the same kind of dreadful battery life. So it must be the custom M8 ROM I'm using (Insert Coin). I'm going to reflash a different one (will try Android Revolution HD, as this one is supposed to be as close as possible to stock) and see how it behaves.
I did try flashing a BLE-supporting ROM to my old Galaxy Nexus, but it couldn't connect to the Gear. The Gear Manager was stuck forever while attempting to connect.
OK, with Android Revolution HD 5.0 for HTC One M8 the battery life is MUCH better, I think it'll stretch to 2-3 days the way it's going now. So one annoyance is solved.
However, the others are still pending resolution. The one I'm particularly annoyed by is the issue with Bluetooth earpiece. I just can't use the Gear if I have to answer the phone on it or on the phone, as I've been using Bluetooth earpieces for the last 12 years (since they appeared on the market more or less) and don't see myself changing it just because of this Gear stupidity. I'm investigating possible solutions (e.g. using Tasker or similar apps). Will post results here.
Another update, just found what seems to be a perfect way around the Bluetooth earpiece problem. A combination of Tasker and Secure Settings allows me to switch from Gear to my earpiece on incoming or outgoing call and then back to Gear when the call is finished. Seems to be working very smoothly! At least now I can wear the Gear throughout my workday and handle phone calls normally.
Looking for resolving other outstanding issues, the next most pressing one is alarm notifications.
Hoping to get working Runtastic when the company releases the app.
Last, having all these health functions (sleep tracker/pedometer/HR) and not being able to use them on the phone is pretty annoying. Hoping to get S Health eventually working on non-Samsung phones...

So does anyone have a doc'd process and prerequisites on how to make these two devices even work. I have seen countless youtube videos with people walking through what the thing does and even paired to a htc one m8. I have done all the side loading of the APK's etc. Staging stuff where they suggested and so on. Still coming up with it not working. There is some magic that I am missing some where.
so far I have done:
Installed the Stubpak.apk one by one. Then installed Gear Manager, The phone see's that gear2 then pops up a Parsing Error and goes into the gear manager app pairing screen for ever. Nothing happens after that.
If anyone can shed some light that would be great.
Thanks in Advance.
how do you do it?

Hmm I thought your "solution" was a different custom ROM? Even if I sync an account with few (10) contacts it's the same issue for me...
dlog_system only shows Power Manager messages all day e.g.

Voice connection to Nexus 6P with Gear S2 3G on Verizon

So I have been struggling with this since opening day!
When the watch is connected to my 6P (and my Nexus 6 before that - which was not Marshmallow) I can answer and make calls from the phone, but the audio and mic always default to the watch. This is super annoying. Verizon sent me a new watch which does the same. Samsung says it's a Marshmallow problem. Google says its a Huawei problem. And they send me back to Verizon.
So, what I have resorted to is waiting for the call to connect and then on the phone override the BT audio to handset prior to talking. What a hassle!
If you override the BT audio on the phone's BT setting for the S2, then you are no longer given the option to take the call on the S2 (of course).
Anyone have a similar experience? What to do next?
I have the same exact problem with the S2 3G paired with the Nexus 6P. I unchecked phone audio in the phones bluetooth settings but as you said, it disables the option to use the S2 as a phone. Hope there is a solution soon.
Seems to not be fully compatible with marshmallow yes
I have this issue as well. Also when I make a call with my phone (Nexus 6) the call is always completed on the watch via Bluetooth connection. I have to switch back to the phone on the watch during the call.....

Update - Sammy Boo
Spoke with Samsung again. I thought the Gear Manager update yesterday would fix this - no deal!
Samsung is now claiming this is a software upgrade with the Gear S2 and is intentionally programmed functionality! Really?
I requested an escalation to their development team as a software enhancement to revert to prior functionality - they assured me that would happen, and they'll send me a notification from their team; problem is, they did not take any of my contact info!
I'm having an issue with CM13 on a Note 4 with a Gear S2. I changed the build.prop from Samsung to HTC to allow the Gear app to function (it doesn't like CM on Samsung phones) and all seemed well. When I try to click send to take a call, nothing happens. When I receive a call I only have the option to reject it from my watch. My watch is not activated, I don't need 2 numbers.
After spending hours on the phone with Verizon and Samsung I flashed a TW based rom and calls instantly worked. I'm pretty happy with my CM rom and I'd like to find a way to get it to work with that rom.
Did this ever get resolved?
I had Samsung Gear S2 with my Note 7 and life was awesome! Then tragedy struck and my life with a good phone is put on hold for at least 6 months, until the S8 series releases in Feb?/March?/April? of 2017. Until then, I decided to limp along with a somewhat cheaper Nexus 6P. The problem is, it throws all my incoming calls over to my Gear S2 instead of picking up on the phone handset. I then have to choose the drop down option to use my handset instead. This is NOT the intended operation. If I wanted to answer the call on my watch, I would answer it on my watch. I don't want to answer on my phone and then have my watch pick up. There is no way that I have found to correct this. This is terrible functionality for an otherwise very promising piece of technology (the watch, no the phone).
I have the same issue on 6p on ATT. What I normally do is like said above is uncheck the Bluetooth handset under Bluetooth settings. Then just turn call forwarding on..Therefore when I want to take calls on the watch I just wait about an extra 10secs. Or of course answer on the phone.
BTW when i had a samsung S6 this was not an issue...

eSim

I ordered the Classic from bestbuy the other day. The lady told me that they have one is embedded with LTE for same price. She explained to me that I can make phone call through the watch and talk to the watch directly through bluetooth connection even though I am with t-mobile. Is that right ? Cause they don't have a demo to show me how it works.
She said only the LTE version can talk directly to the watch . The regular Classic or Platinum can not.
But my question is if the watch is only connect to bluetooth, why the Platinum version can't talk directly to the watch itself for phone calls. Does anyone know ? She said my watch will ring but to answer it, I need to use the phone.
I believe that is because the gear s2 classic bluetooth does not have a built in speaker. This is why you need to use the phone.
The gear s2 3g/LTE version has a built-in speaker which is why you can answer and make phone calls directly from the watch.
Thanks for clarifying this.

Samsung Pay, two Samsung Gear S(2/3) watches, one Samsung S7 Edge phone

Ultimate Question:
Can anyone here say they've used two Samsung Gear S2/3 watches with the same phone, and been able to register both of them with the same Samsung Pay account and same bank credit-card account?
Background:
I've had Samsung Pay on my Gear S2 watch since it has been available, and it works better than I expected it to. It is obviously limited to NFC payment terminals, as the S2 has no Magnetic Secure Transmission device.
Enter the Gear S3, now with MST payment technology.
Linked it to my phone with zero issues entered my credit-card information, and was validated on Samsung Pay in less than ten minutes on the Gear S3.
At this point, my Gear S2 and the new Gear S3 are both enabled as payment devices using the same credit-card.
Take off the S3, put on the S2. Allow a few seconds for the Gear Manager to switch to the new watch. Press and hold the Samsung Pay button on the S2 and note that it is telling me that the card has been removed from my device and asks me if I'd like to add one at this time.
WTF? I go ahead and re-add the S2, call the bank, yadda yadda, and the S2 is back with my Visa enabled on it.
Yep. Now pick up the S3, and put down the S2. Allow a few seconds for the Gear Manager to switch to the new watch. Press and hold the Samsung Pay button on the S3 and note that it is telling me that the card has been removed from my device and asks me if I'd like to add one at this time.
100% reproducible.
I did this back-and-forth with the bank about 10 times last night, before someone there transferred me to the manager who asked if I could maybe spread out my token-requests over a few days.
Meanwhile my wife's S2 with Samsung Pay and the same card account is not affected by this at all - it seems that you're only allowed one Gear S watch at a time in which to have your Samsung Pay information stored, if they share a common phone. Authorize one, and as soon as you switch to the other it will de-authorize the card on that device. The bank assures me they are not doing this on their end.
My ultimate solution at this time is to have done a light-reset on my S2, powered it down, and put it on the charger until this can get straightened out. After doing that, I could get my card re-authorized on the S3 and it has been showing active for several hours now

I have a similar experience. Switch watch on the Gear manager app and all the Samsung Pay credit cards are deleted.
It appears that credit cards can be authorised on both phone and watch but not on two watches at the same time.
Thanks for confirming. I'd hoped this was just a configuration issue on my end.
Considering one of the stand-out features of the watch(es) is the Samsung Pay functionality, I'd say this sort of renders useless that cool auto-switch capability in the Gear Manager.
I had spent over an hour on the phone with Samsung Pay support, describing the problem, and was told I'd be getting a confirmation email with a case-number for the support issue. Several days later - with the email noticibly absent from my inbox - I called again to inquire.
No solution, no case-number, no notes on my account. No record I'd ever even called.
Nice.
Samsung Pay for Gear only supports 1 watch at a time
I had a similar issue, but I am using both S3 models. I was finally able to get someone at Samsung Pay support that new about the issue. He explained that the Samsung Pay Gear app registers as it's in device for mobile payments. That device can only have one watch associated with it. So as you register and use your second watch, the first watch is deregistered.
There was a workaround available in my case. Since I have a second Galaxy phone and my S3 Frontier is the at&t model with it's own connectivity. I was able to register my classic with my normal phone and my Frontier with my other phone. The frontier doesn't need the phone to be connected when I use it for transactions, since it has it's own connectivity. It's a bad workaround, but it has worked for the last month.
With MST transactions being a big selling point of the Gear S3, I count this as a complete fail on Samsung's part. I wanted both S3 for their different styles, but I am now looking at offloading one because the user experience is not seamless between the two.
I think Samsung never considered someone would have more than one watch each with Samsung Pay on it.

Doing a Samsung Pay transaction doesn't require connectivity. MST and NFC are hardware technologies. So both versions of the Frontier and the Classic models are S Pay capable.
Being able to pair a watch with 2 different phones is problematic. That would be the case with any Tizen or AW watch because it is a slave and master relationship. Which phones' contacts to use, which Facebook/Twitter account, which email, which messaging, etc. The solution is for watches to become independent- with standalone apps that pull directly from the servers (rather than going thru a phone). That is, essentially become a 1" smartphone.
Silly me, thinking that the new Gear manager's auto-switch capability would include preserving the Samsung Pay card registration on both watches.
It does not.
As a matter of fact, it disables the cards on both watches and will require you to re-authorize the cards on which ever watch you decide to use.
Yes, you're right. You can only activate credit card with one watch, not both. I've tested this very thoroughly and there's no way around this lim fact. What I've done is disable all connectivity on one watch and loaded the other one. I wear this one during the day and the other one at night. Best workaround I've found. Or you can add a second card on your second watch.

Samsung Pay doesn't work with two gear watches
I have two gear S3 watches, I can pair both to my S8 plus. The problem is setting up Samsung pay to use and work with two different Gear watches on the same phone, and use the same debit card. 1) both watches are to use the same debit cards. 2) One watch ("A") is active and linked to the phone. 3) setup the debit card on the phone for watch "A" using Samsung pay--all is fine to this point. On the watch SP works fine.
Now the problem: Turn off watch "A" and turn on watch "B", link "B" to the phone, proceed to setup SP. The first thing that happens is the previous working debit card is deleted and I,m prompted to re-setup the same debit card that was deleted. Now it's working for phone"B" just fine. Samsung Pay (SP) no longer works on phone "A" and will need to be setup again. Samsung Pay can't work with two gear S3 watches on the same phone. SP can only have one setup per phone, and each time you turn on a 2nd gear S3 watch, the exsisting SP setup is deleted. Why would anyone have a 2nd Gear S3 watch which will not be able to function correctly.
How does one setup two Gear S3 watches to work with Samsung Pay on the same phone? This is a MAJOR PROBLEM and needs to be addressed.
---------- Post added at 01:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:07 AM ----------
The only way I could get Samsung pay to work on two watches was to first link watch "A" to the phone. Setup Samsung Pay (SP) on watch "A", adding two debit cards. Then turn off "Bluetooth" on the watch, so the watch does not link with the phone anymore. You might ask why have the 2nd watch at all if it's not linked to the phone, and that is the 64 dollar question I keep asking myself.
Turn off watch "A". Turn on watch "B",proceed to setup SP in the normal way (at this point all the debit cards used for watch "A" will have be deleted). Re-install the debit cards again (this madness---nuts). Now Samsung pay will work on both watches, but one watch no longer links to the phone--no incoming calls, no text messages, no email, but you have SP working.
Samsung are you listening...... This needs to get corrected....

If the problem is the same card can't be used on two different watches, the simplest solution is to have your bank issue a second card linked to the same account (ie. upload your spouse's card)
Hopeful that Samsung sends an update to allow this.

I've tried using my wife's card. It does not work, the same results only one Samsung account, per watch at the same time.
Same issue with me, S8 with both S3 Classic and Frontier. Its not that you can't have the same card on both watches, you can't have any cards active on both watches. Whatever cards registered on one watch are immediately deleted as soon as the phone connects to the other watch.
I also tried contacting Samsung Pay support on twitter. After a long back-and-forth they simply tell me to contact samsung support instead. Seems they are not aware of this issue. They told me they do not have two S3's on hand to try and replicate this problem.
I end up not using samsung pay at all as the hassle of adding even a single card every time I switch watches is too much hassle. This is a major bummer...
Just purchased my second S3 so I can have a nice watch for off duty and a beat up one for on duty use. I'm having the same problem. Researched and found this thread for info. At least now I can stop trying to get sp to work on both watches. Thanks for the info here. Major bummer for sp..

I have the S3 Classic and want to purchase the S3 Frontier, so I was wondering the same and this is the response I received from Samsung support...
"Thank you for contacting us. We appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
I understand from your inquiry you want to use Samsung Pay on both your watches.
Kindly know that Samsung Pay can work on multiple devices independently, it does not deactivate or impact in other way the other Gear, as long as your bank allows you to have multiple cards issued for the same account.
Whenever you register a card in Samsung Pay, the bank issues a virtual card tied to your account. And it does that for each registration of Samsung Pay, even if it is the same account.
This is perfectly fine, that is how the application works, as long as the bank allows multiple registrations for the same bank account."
Please post if you were able to get both working, because I would love to purchase the S3 Frontier also.
Good luck.
I suppose as long as the card numbers are different on each device, then it could work as they state.
I can tell you what does not work - registering the same card (number) on more than one watch, and having those watches paired to the same phone.
I have a classic and a frontier and they both used to work with Samsung pay registered to the same phone, however since the latest gear updates they no longer work, can only have one tied to the account... I have a new issue as well, the Classic will no longer backup to the cloud... I've been in touch with support and they're basically useless to this point... Samsung has their head in their asses...
Just got the Galaxy Sport and already have the Galaxy Watch, now I use the GW mostly, but wanted to use the sport for when out and about training/riding/with kids, so want the Samsun Pay working on that too, but nope, doesn't matter if you use different cards (from different banks no less), as soon as Pay is setup on one watch it wipes the Pay setup from the other. No matter what.
Right pain in the bum!

Good luck with that, I'm still dealing with my Classic stuck in a Terms & Conditions loop going on a year, watch will NOT backup or restore properly to my account. My Frontier works perfectly but my Classic is fubared. This seems to all be tied with 1 watch per account if you ask me... How do I suspect this? It all happened when they switched to 1 watch for Samsung Pay per account.
