Waiting to backup - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

That's what it says in my backup options after rooting. The only thing it has completed was the contacts, I'm wondering if it is conflicting with my pixel 2 that shares the same backup email? I skipped through the initial setup of the phone so I don't have the text messages from my other phone. The apps I downloaded from the play store, but backup doesn't say that it has backed up any of that data.
On my pixel 2 my breakups have all backed up onto Google drive

It doesn't matter that you have multiple devices backing up to the same Google account. I'd reboot and try again. If it still doesn't work it's probably the phone not talking with the backup account and you may need to contact Google to get it sorted.

Google's cloud backup function works great for backing up the information, but I've never been able to successfully restore that same info to my device. I've had much better luck using the USB-C cable to perform a direct transfer during the intial setup. By the way, once you perform that transfer, even if something failed during the process, there is no way to start the transfer process again without factory resetting the device. Dumbest thing EVER!

you mean you need to reset the new device?
if so, it is just 20 minutes you lost for the transfer?!

So unless I reset, I'm stuck waiting? Google tech said since I'm rooted that could be the issue

Seems I have the option again to manually back up

Yes, we all have that option. Restoring is the hard part. If you want the pixel setup to start over so you can transfer everything from your old phone via USB cable, then you have to factory reset the phone.

To force your phone to backup to google drive:
1) Enable Debugging/ADB on phone
2) Enter the following ADB commands from your PC/shell
adb shell
bmgr run
bmgr backupnow --all
Then wait a while. If it fails, restart phone and try again. It will fail if certain other processes are running but it'll go eventually.

Try this:
bmgr enabled
bmgr backupnow --all
Found it over here. It worked for me.

Has anyone tried the native backup option in 4.0.3?

I'm a noob looking to start flashing roms and kernels and generally screw with my stock NS running 4.0.3.
Looks like the first step is to do a backup so I don't lose my app data, etc. when I do the required wipe.
I realize I could use different methods/apps like Astro, etc. but I notice under system settings/backup & reset there's what looks like auto (cloud?) backup and restore options.
Wondering if anyone has tested this and can vouch for it (or not) as a functional backup solution?

I've been doing this since before ICS. What this refers to, really, is synching Google apps with their online counterparts (Contacts, Calendar, etc.) and storing settings for Google apps on Google servers. It won't help with any non-Google apps.
I can't upload a screenshot but there is an option-
"Back up my data: back up app data, wifi passwords and other settings to google servers"
And further down one that says: "Auto Restore: when reinstalling an app restore backed up settings and data"
So this is just referring to google's stuff and not to Market apps?
Thanks for your response btw.

In general it will restore your Android settings (wifi passwords, wallpaper, etc). And it will re-download all the market apps you had installed. But you will lose all the data and settings from the market apps.

I'd say it's not very functional. Like Bozzy said it won't restore your app settings. It will redownload all your apps but you'll usually find that to be more of an annoyance than anything. I'd recommend investing in Titanium Backup. Or if you're strapped for funds you can download MyBackup Root for free but Titanium Backup is well worth every penny. When I rooted my wife's phone I actually bought Titanium again even though I could've used my license key because it's such an awesome app.
I have Ti Backup downloaded and ready to go but that app requires root.
I guess I'll go with Astro, back up to SD card, and transfer to pc via USB.
If I'm understanding things correctly?

I should clarify. Without root you won't be able to backup app data. Titanium will be your best friend once you are rooted but prior you'll just be able backup the .apks, saving you from having to redownload them. So, yes you are on the right track with Astro.
Just to update.
Digging in the forums here I found a method of getting root without wiping my phone.
I was able to root my phone by running a batch file on my PC- doesn't touch the bootloader. Used titanium to back everything up before I start flashing.
Very cool.

Help One More Time?

So, I'm on my galaxy s3, I updated It to the newest android, and It was rooted. Whenever I boot it up, It freezes a lot now, and It reboots randomly and frequently. I have a 32 gb Ex. SD Card as well as the internal SD Card. I would like to backup all of my contacts, apps, and app data, and then I would like to root my phone again After that. Also, My google play store will not let me download anything, because I cannot sign into the play store, I just want to learn how to backup those things and completely restart my phone.

Well if you don't have any backup app on your phone and you can't download from playstore, first you have to fix your playstore by clear "data" for the following apps, (Go into settings->apps tab on ALL)
1. Downloader
2. Google play store
3. Google framework services
4. Delete your google account
5. Reboot phone and recreate google account
If you can download from playstore, download "my backup" app, it's great for contacts and SMS (Titanium is the best but not good for contacts and sms).
** If still not able to access playstore, you need to download "my backup apk" and install it.

My backup will backup all contacts, sms, mms, all apps and app data and system data (scheuler, calendar, system settings etc..). The nice thing is when you restore, you have option to do full restore, or just certain apps (with or without app data), or you could restore just contacts/sms/mms/scheduler/system data etc.(individually-one by one), very flexible indeed.
I'm curious why when I was trying to help in the other post you would open a new post with the exact same question?

You do for his to. The app he said requires root for app data just like mine. Also why start a new thread, just ask of any other ideas in your first. All this does is clutter the forum

Are you in download mode in your phone?
I assume you are, but just in case. Pull the battery, put it back in, then hold volume down, home and power at the same time. Which file are you stuck trying to flash?

Clockworkmod Helium not restoring Apps

Hello,
my Pixel arrived and I wanted to copy all my Data from my Nexus 5 (rooted) to my Pixel. As I can't root at the moment the Pixel (at least I don't know how) I wanted to use Helium (Premium) to copy all Data from my old to my new Phone. Helium gets activated from my PC on both Phones with the PC Companion App. On my Nexus I have done the Backup to the Google Cloud, in my Pixel I can choose to restore. But then nothing happens. Helium on my Pixel acts like everything went fine, but I can't find the App in the Drawer. After restarting the Phone Helium says that the App I restored previously is not installed.
Did anyone try to restore via Helium?
Cheers
KobiP
Same problem.
Helium says that my apps data was restored, but in fact it was not.
Looks like Helium is not compatible with Pixel or Android 7.1...
This doesn't seem to be Helium related in particular but perhaps a bug with Android 7.1.
Helium uses adb backup to create and restore backups and when using adb backup manually it doesn't work either when restoring app settings & such to 7.1 from lower versions of Android.
If I back up an app on 7.1 using either Helium or adb backup though it works as expected, just not if the backup was created on MM (I haven't tested any other version of Android yet).

I really only wanted backup of one app (Subway Surfers). I saw the same issue. I had to install the game from the Play store and then using Helium to restore, it worked perfectly.

Hey,
tnx, works as described! Install from Play Store, then restore via Helium. Now I have my Savegames back
Cheers
I am experiencing the exact same issue with my Google Pixel. I have performed a full backup from my Nexus 5X so that I don't have to install the app manually. But when I attempt to restore the app it is not installed, despite all messaging suggesting that the restore worked just fine. If I install the app manually from the app store and then perform a restore from Helium the data is restored.
Unfrotunately I have apps that I'd like to restore that are NO LONGER IN THE APP STORE so this is rather bothersome.

Can you not pull the apk from your Nexus 5X and side-load it on your Pixel, then restore your back-up?
Isn't that the point of using Helium to backup the App AND the data? I too have an app that errors out when trying to restore. It worked with a few other I backed up. I tried full backup and then just data then uninstalled the app and reinstalled it and both restores errored out.
Any ideas? Thanks

Non-rooted backup of app caches on data partition?

Hello all,
I've been searching this topic for a few weeks, and have yet to find a viable solution. I want to grab some files out of the app caches on the data partition of my Pixel 2. I don't necessarily want to root it, because I have no desire to modify anything, just want to view some stuff.
I've tried several backup apps - which have either failed because they need root, or "backup disallowed". I've also tried adb using pull, backup, cp, shell, etc. It seems a bit backwards to unlock the bootloader, wiping the device of the very data I'm trying to extract. It's been frustrating to not be able to access one's own personal data ?
Any ideas? Thank you.
+1 I'd love to have this answer as well. All my passwords are in Twik (Play store app). I don't think Google is backing up app data (or are they?). If I ever decide to flash the Pixel 2, I'll have to re-type all my websites, plus the private key. Twik is one of the few apps I rely on that isn't cloud based. I suspect the answer is there's no way on an unrooted android device.
Speaking of Google backing up app data, Google android says it can restore app and app data, but in my experience, unless the app uses cloud based data, it ain't happening. So why do they claim to backup app data? I suppose they are refering to Google apps, as of coarse, Google does keep your Google app cloud data anyway, so you'll have it restored when you log back into your android device.
You could try using Helium for backing up data. Even without root, if you follow the instructions (download the file to a Windows box and connect the phone to it) Helium should work.

I think I tried that once. But without root, it skips anything that has it's backup flag set to "false". Unless you know a way to trick it ?

Data backup

What's the best way to backup/restore apps/data from a rooted phone to an unrooted 4a? Does a Google restore restore data/settings from non-google apps (like MixPlorer)? I usually restore with Swift Backup, but don't think that works without root.

Google restored all of my apps with data/settings including Mixplorer for me using the data cable connected to my P2XL. I did have to log back in with passwords and redo biometric logins but that was expected. Google even copied my downloads folder and most of its contents to the 4a.
Before you restore make sure to go into the Google One app and manually back up your data.

My 5t backs up to Google drive. I assume the cloud backup would be the same as cable backup? I've never done a phone to phone bu. I always just use cloud but for Google apps, and Swift (or titanium) for the rest thinking Google didn't backup data.

I've used Google Restore, Helium, My Backup Pro and had success with all of them. Restoring settings and app data is not too difficult.
Sent from my Pixel 4a using Tapatalk
I just use the cable to Cable transfer when I set up my 4A. This was from a pixel 3 XL rooted. All the apps that were at least available on the Google Store were moved over. The applications like viper for Android and ad-away were not transferred over.
