has audio recording quality improved? - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

Hi
I would like to know about the quality of the microphones in the pixel 3 regular please, I read here on XDA that now there is stereo recording, I also read the phones come with three microphones now, can someone please report on the quality of audio recording? Better yet with demonstrations?
Thanks a lot!

Haven't seen anything official but people have reported that its stereo now.

I thought it was always stereo. Only iPhones recorded in mono for the longest time.

Pretty confident last Pixels where mono.
I think Samsung and others may have done stereo longer.

Very few if any tech reviewers appear to have tested this, but from the videos I've seen its tinny and poor quality again
https://youtu.be/S9qNHYtNsik

I can no longer trust tech reviewers to truly dive into any analysis of how these phones perform. They all rush through the same talking points to get their review published first. They read more like a press release, touting new features, instead of a genuine review of those features.

Here's a review/comparison. The pixel 3 comes in a little way into the video.

Here's a direct comparison with the iPhone. The pixel is terrible. How could they ship something this bad?

Stereo now but still seems far away

Yup, seems to be horrible. Not so much an issue for me.
For Video-people, at least now you have the possibility to connect an external mic: Pixel 3 to finally let you use external mic when recording video

YES, JUNK AND TRASHY LIKE BEFORE. WTF DO I STILL BUY THIS STUPID PHONE!?!?!? Should have waited for the reviews....

The Audio Thread

Since I didn't find anything in General I decided to open a thread about audio quality.
I've noticed the speaker produces quite compressed output (which I dont like).
Whats your experience?
Do you think we can get voodoo sound?

The external speaker's been beaten up pretty badly in the "remorse" thread. You can see some of the objective testing results and a lot of discussion here...

Here's an old article published by Francois Simond (supercurio) talking about audio on the SGS2 including some of the challenges and his work-arounds. You'll notice there's not a single mention of the external speaker. That's because Voodoo is designed to improve high-end audio output for audiophiles and people that listen to non-compressed media with high-end gear. People that listen to 128 kbit/s MP3's over $50 headphones wouldn't notice supercurio's tuning and/or could accomplish the same results with the stock output and a s/w equalizer. Audiophile standards and high-end performance have nothing to do with external speaker output whose range is too narrow and impedance too low for anything to help. Hence it never being mentioned in supercurio's work.

Objective testing shows the N3's external speaker to be plenty loud but the subjective general consensus is that the N3’s output is lacking depth and detail. And that’s because of the new speaker design Samsung’s introduced. Some people are fine with it while it bothers the crap out of others.
External Speaker is crap, S3 sound much more better, i'm very disappointed.

You post those clips and charts etc. They mean nothing to me, in.my experience You Tube media is a far far better audio experience in the Note 2 than the 3. Its clear as day, I don't know why you keep chiming in to defend the Note 3 speaker, I really don't. Its cack. But I'm learning to deal with it.

I'm no smarter than anyone here and probably less so in quite a few areas. Don't confuse writing well with intelligence.
I totally agree that the speaker on the N3 has less depth and detail than the N2; it's hard not to notice when they are side-by-side. The volume's pretty much the same so the only area you and I disagree on is the importance of depth and detail as it applies to an external speaker. It bothers the crap out of some people and others seem not to mind as much. People that care a lot about the sound quality from their external speaker could be disappointed with the N3 and should probably check it out in person before buying it. So see, you and I agree on a lot.

Have you tried Viper`s FX sound mod yet? I`ve noticed a great difference with a YouTube clip of Warpaint playing Jubilee at reading. Before Jenny`s bass was indistinct and not as powerful as usual. After the mod it sounded more like the Jenny i know.

Yep, we've struck mutual ground finally. Volume, if anything I think the N3 has the upper hand, but along with the extra output comes higher frequencies in all aspects of external output. If that could be calmed down, then I wouldn't really be complaining - more depth, less highs, would be a winner then. Perhaps Sammy could adjust through an update? Perhaps they're not even bothered?

That sounds like it could be the ticket! I haven't rooted yet, and tbh not sure about installing Viper - is it a case of downloading, ticking unknown sources and opening it? Think its time I had a look at that, I love my Note 3 bar the You Tube audio experience, and general thinness of the audio as we all know lol.

Well i`m rooted but the install is pretty uncomplicated. Download the latest zip from here http://vipersaudio.com/blog/?page_id=48
Use Winrar or any suitable program to extract the file to a folder of your choice (the default is downloads which is ok).
Plug your phone in and copy the ViPER4Android_v2301_ Android_ 4.x.apk file to your phone. You will need to tick unknown sources before installing apk.

Im perfectly aware of that but if we find the audio config files we can try editing. (I dont intend to root soon, but...)
Tried on headphones (not $8, but studio headphones) - sounds ok. The limiting effect is not present on headphones.
I'm running viper sound and the moderate volume hack.
It's defiantly reasonable sound quality when you find the right irs file and settings for your taste.
Not a bad result out of a somewhat mediocre speaker.

For the speaker I don't think there is much hope because Sammy dumped a lousy one inside. If the hardware is below par it is very difficult to remedy even with software. It's a trade off when we bought the Note 3 over say, the HTC One. The stereo speakers on it are amazing.
On the other hand there's more potential for the headphone out to be improved.

I installed the viper mod yesterday, it makes a difference once you tweak it. This vid has a good walkthrough of installing it as well as some messing around with different settings while music is playing.

I'm not an audiophile (and if i was my phone wouldnt be my source of music) so with viper mod it sounds good enough for me, for what little I use the phone to listen to audio.

Terrible speaker quality and distortion. Normal? or just defective?

So my Nexus 5's speaker is absolute garbage compared to my Nexus 5. the range is just non-existent and it has incredibly bad distortion during phone calls, and most music and videos.
Right now i'm ready to return the phone and spend another year with my nexus 4 over it, but before i do, i'm curious to know if mine might just be defective.
So to all the other owners, do you have distortion, pops and the like when making phone calls or having any audio through and how does it compare to your previous phones, especially any other Nexus 4 owners.
Right now my N4 sounds like my $150 desktop speakers compared to the N5.

Yeah that's why i'm posting because i find it incredibly hard to believe that the Nexus 5, in 20 god damn 13 had worse speakers than my G1 from 2008. And just to test, i broke out my G1, MyTouch 3G and Nexus One, and played the same ringtones on each. No distortion on any device but the N5.
The Verge even said in their review that they had distortion on the speaker which almost leads me to think this is normal, and unacceptable.

all reviews are saying the speaker is terrible. same with the camera. but they're comparing it to 600+ dollar phones, you get what you pay for, the bulk on the 350 dollars is going toward the processor and screen

That is true, but my $300 Nexus 4 from a year ago sounds 100 times better than my $400 (32gb) nexus 5 from this year.
And also the whole $700/$350 thing is kinda bull****. Though that phone does cost $700 to buy, it costs the same as what a nexus costs, usually around $150-$200 to produce. Google just cuts out all the middle men and carrier BS to get the price to be that low. Yes they do make sacrifices but my damn G1 sounds better than my Nexus 5, so that has nothing to do with cost.

No, it's not just you, I thought it was me!
I came from an HTC One X and the call quality is terrible; a bit like what I imagine being a little bit deaf is like and when I'm playing a video or have a call on speaker, the thing buzzes and vibrates. Not good compared to my previous phone.
ugh. this isn't looking good. i really was hoping i was the only one. Hope we get a lot more replies here tonight.
Only one speaker?
On mine I noticed only one side is playing the music? anyone else?
I'm hoping it's something like a mic and speaker... and not a deffective

thats correct. one side is the speaker and one is the mic. evidently this is normal practice on the iphone and many other devices. I just found out today.
Hows your quality though?
Two things i hear the crackle/pop on guaranteed is the ringing of a phone call and for some reason Lindsey Stirlings Crystalize, the first 30-40 seconds. lots of other examples but those two are the easiest and most noticeable i found.

Just got my white 32gb N5 today and indeed mine is suffering from similar issues. At first I was thinking my right speaker was DOA but I later learned it's not a speaker at all and is a mic - the N5 is a mono device. So, I played some music, an audio book and tried out some ringtones. A pop was audible on some ringtones and the audiobook. The sound gets pretty distorted when at the top two levels. I wonder if the pop is down to the audio coding because now I've downloaded higher quality files, the pop has gone away and distortion not quite as bad at high levels. Yet to try out a phone call over the speaker.
I've tested some music at 320 bit rate and hd video on youtube and the play store and same issues. and then no issues at all on the nexus 4.
Great I was so excited to purchase my first nexus phone. Ugh
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
You know, I was at Pete's Coffee last night with my girlfriend and 2 people were talking next to us about this exact same issue. A man in his early 30s was talking to a buddy of his about the Nexus 5, and naturally, I zoned out from what my girlfriend had to say overheard their conversation.
They were talking about the Nexus 5 and how one of them who had the phone loved it, except he said the speaker was very poor quality.
Hopefully mine does not have this issue when it arrives this Thursday.
The Nexus 5's speaker is actually pretty darn good. Not quite HTC One level but damn close. It uses the same chip technology the HTC One has but only has a mono speaker on the bottom edge instead. It should be MUCH better than the Nexus 4, the Galaxy S4, or similar.
If it is sounding distorted, it is quite possibly a damaged speaker or chip, and should be RMA'ed. Reviews (unlike what some whacko said) have actually been pretty positive about the speaker.

Your now the second person i've seen to say that it's good. How much have you tested it though? phone calls? loud movies? music?
I want to keep this phone, or at least get a replacement, but i got about 5 people with me saying they have similar issues so it's getting harder to imagine that it's a defect.
My sound is pretty faint. I'll be lucky if I hear a text or call
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
I have played music from a couple different sources at full volume and I haven't heard any distortion.
I actually just watched a full review of the phone here in the General section, and he says the speaker is absolutely great! although he does not ever test in the video.
Been using mine all day. A bit of music and a fair few YouTube video and I've not noticed any problems at all. Nowhere near as loud as the Note 2 I'm coming from, but few phones are as loud as it. So far I'm happy with speaker quality
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Well since some of you do not seem to have this issue I'm going to hope those of us with it just have defective units and i'm going to exchange mine.
If the one i get has the same issues though, i'll be sticking with my Nexus 4 for another year.

Stereo Mic for Note 4

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody knows where i can buy a good stereo mic for the Note 4 ?
Coming from the Sony Xperia Z2, i used to bought the STM10 Mic that Sony made exclusively for the Xperia Z2, and i gotta say, it was so great to record with it (concert, and loud environment, etc...)
I searched online but i found only for iphones... grrrr...
If anyone can help me ?
Thanks !
wow i didn't think that stuff existed, im interested also, would be good to record 120fps 1080 with great sound!

This guy is right, but instead of 1, it has 3
For higher quality recording, but less convenient, i'd look at some of the USB stereo mics. I've used a Blue Yeti Pro with my Note 2 before. But it's MUCH less portable than, say, the Zoom iPhone mics (iQ5, iQ6).

I read somewhere it has 3 micr and great for conference.
I think the reason the speaker is not at the bottom is bc it is used by the mic.
I wish we dont have this many mic!
If you are the handy type, know how to solder you could make an adapter and use most any mic you wanted.

Thought I would mention that i think the Note 4 mic setup is hard to find in other phones, even other Notes.
I've been using mine to take musical notes without any external mics and the sound reproduction is absolutely tops. I specifically bought the Note 4 a while back after researching everything out there regarding onboard mics and that was the result.
Having used to record several hours worth, I don't want to go elsewhere. I'm buying another phone, probably an LG30, but keeping the 4 just for the studio.
Its some sort of quadraphonic configuration, I don't know how it works other than redundancy. It just works REALLY well.
Wish the manufacturers would stop messing with the good things like that, skimping on mics to put some BS feature somewhere else at the cost of good mic sound.
If you are musicians, KEEP YOUR NOTE 4s!!!
That is all I have to say about that.

Active noise cancellation performance

On YT I've saw that U11 has active noise cancellation. Can somebody tell me how well it works? I'm thinking about changing my current phone to U11 and it's one of points which I want to check before buying.

It is decent with included headphones.
There are quite a few threads and opinionated people around here so you can check them, but for me it's the best phone soundwise you can currently buy.

Basically the U sonic earbuds would tune themselves as per your ear canal on the first plug-in (just takes a couple of seconds). The noise cancellation is effective, not as efficient as Bose headphones in terms of noise cancellation.. But yes sound is the best on any phone available today (people do like sony phones audio as well )

The sound on the U11 isn't the best on a phone today lol
How it looks in comparison to LG G6 with DAC? I'm deciding which one to buy. Sound quality is one of major points to take decision.

Korean LG G6? then the LG G6 will win, no question.

OnePlus Speakers?

Hey guys, I didn't seem to find any information about the speakers in the review section of the forum. I know OnePlus has been using the same single downward firing speaker with their phones since they began, and just want some opinions and insight as to how good they are. I know they can be easily muted with your hand, but are they at least loud and clear? REALLY considering the upcoming 6t, but just want to know if the speakers are at least good enough. Thanks!
Speaker is weak.. Really weak. Root + ViPER4Android makes it somewhat better.. But yeah you can't fix bad hardware with software.

That...... Bums me out. I REALLY hope the 6t has either a better speaker or a stereo pair, that'd really be nice! But shoot, weak as in tinny? Or weak as in just not loud enough?

Not that loud and really rubbish sound =p but then again, the only speakers I liked are the stereo speakers I don't really use it that much so doesn't bother me really.

Well shoot, I'm coming from a Motorola Nexus 6. I'll be leaving behind a QHD display and stereo front facing speakers for this device. I decided OnePlus because I definitely want a device with a great dev scene, but these trade offs man! Lol
The op6 speaker is better than any Samsung single speaker. For single speakers it's not that bad. I can hear it in my pocket.
I'm gonna agree with Gizmoe, I think it's actually quite good. Last few devices were Sony Z3 (dual speaker/ stereo), Moto z3 (dual speaker/ stereo) Nexus 6p (dual speaker/ stereo) LG g6, Samsung S8+ , and now OP6...for a single speaker it sounds pretty damn good. Also there are stereo mods for OP6 as well as Viper for even better sound.
It's easily my favorite device.
Speqker is pretty good... Can't say its worst or bad. But defienetly gives crystal clear sound while listening to video or youtube.

Alrighty! Yeah I'm not expecting anything amazing, but just so long as it sounds okay I'm good! Yeah ditching stereo speakers and QHD is hard for me, though I checked out my buddy's 5T the other day and remember thinking "that screen is 1080? It looks GREAT!" But then I covered his speaker with my thumb and well......... LOL But just hoping it sounds at least okay, I'm gonna take the dive and go for the 6T this time. I really hope there's a red color option on launch! The red 6 looks soooooo awesome to me!

I completely disagree. My wife's Galaxy S9 plus is way more loud and clear.

I was kind of spoiled coming from a Motorola x pure edition with 2 stereo front-firing speakers. They sounded loud and high quality with minimal distortion. The op6 doesn't hold a candle but I would say it is serviceable.

That's because on the S9 they started using the bottom speaker and the earpiece speaker. It's not just one speaker.

Thank you for pointing this out! I had no idea! Guess that's really not a good comparison, huh? Sorry.
Considering it's a single speaker it's pretty decent, im easily able to speak on calls on the speakerphone which always has been my benchmark for how loud and clear a speaker is on a phone. The position of the speaker is crap, very easily mutable specially while playing games but if flop the phone where notch if your right side, that issue can be overcome.

I didn't even consider gaming. Wow, that's something to think about! Well I'm going to watch the launch event tomorrow and decide, but it's a tough one. Coming from a Nexus device to a OnePlus? I'm leaning towards it because Nexus is no more and the new pixel phone??? I considered it, but for something I've going to look at several times a day for a few years or more, that notch is atrocious! Just insulting really.
Notch on Pixel 3 is super ugly and not to forget only 4 GB of Ram which means reloads (already notched by reviewers). For OP6T, it should have onscreen fingerprint scanner which may be the new technology but I can bet it won't be as fast as conventional fingerprints - that makes it a fail for me. Only thing to envy for OP6 users should be the teardrop notch. Gluck with decision making
The 6T will have stereo bottom firing speakers. Where the Jack was is replaced by a speaker. The fingerprint reader is going to be slower though and isn't always on. Making the experience slower than on the 5, 5t and 6. It's the reason I didn't wait and bought a 6 just a week ago. I figured the first to market with this would be more gimmicky than functional.
