Since I didn't find anything in General I decided to open a thread about audio quality.
I've noticed the speaker produces quite compressed output (which I dont like).
Whats your experience?
Do you think we can get voodoo sound?

The external speaker's been beaten up pretty badly in the "remorse" thread. You can see some of the objective testing results and a lot of discussion here...

Here's an old article published by Francois Simond (supercurio) talking about audio on the SGS2 including some of the challenges and his work-arounds. You'll notice there's not a single mention of the external speaker. That's because Voodoo is designed to improve high-end audio output for audiophiles and people that listen to non-compressed media with high-end gear. People that listen to 128 kbit/s MP3's over $50 headphones wouldn't notice supercurio's tuning and/or could accomplish the same results with the stock output and a s/w equalizer. Audiophile standards and high-end performance have nothing to do with external speaker output whose range is too narrow and impedance too low for anything to help. Hence it never being mentioned in supercurio's work.

Objective testing shows the N3's external speaker to be plenty loud but the subjective general consensus is that the N3’s output is lacking depth and detail. And that’s because of the new speaker design Samsung’s introduced. Some people are fine with it while it bothers the crap out of others.
External Speaker is crap, S3 sound much more better, i'm very disappointed.

You post those clips and charts etc. They mean nothing to me, in.my experience You Tube media is a far far better audio experience in the Note 2 than the 3. Its clear as day, I don't know why you keep chiming in to defend the Note 3 speaker, I really don't. Its cack. But I'm learning to deal with it.

I'm no smarter than anyone here and probably less so in quite a few areas. Don't confuse writing well with intelligence.
I totally agree that the speaker on the N3 has less depth and detail than the N2; it's hard not to notice when they are side-by-side. The volume's pretty much the same so the only area you and I disagree on is the importance of depth and detail as it applies to an external speaker. It bothers the crap out of some people and others seem not to mind as much. People that care a lot about the sound quality from their external speaker could be disappointed with the N3 and should probably check it out in person before buying it. So see, you and I agree on a lot.

Have you tried Viper`s FX sound mod yet? I`ve noticed a great difference with a YouTube clip of Warpaint playing Jubilee at reading. Before Jenny`s bass was indistinct and not as powerful as usual. After the mod it sounded more like the Jenny i know.

Yep, we've struck mutual ground finally. Volume, if anything I think the N3 has the upper hand, but along with the extra output comes higher frequencies in all aspects of external output. If that could be calmed down, then I wouldn't really be complaining - more depth, less highs, would be a winner then. Perhaps Sammy could adjust through an update? Perhaps they're not even bothered?

That sounds like it could be the ticket! I haven't rooted yet, and tbh not sure about installing Viper - is it a case of downloading, ticking unknown sources and opening it? Think its time I had a look at that, I love my Note 3 bar the You Tube audio experience, and general thinness of the audio as we all know lol.

Im perfectly aware of that but if we find the audio config files we can try editing. (I dont intend to root soon, but...)
Tried on headphones (not $8, but studio headphones) - sounds ok. The limiting effect is not present on headphones.
I'm running viper sound and the moderate volume hack.
It's defiantly reasonable sound quality when you find the right irs file and settings for your taste.
Not a bad result out of a somewhat mediocre speaker.

For the speaker I don't think there is much hope because Sammy dumped a lousy one inside. If the hardware is below par it is very difficult to remedy even with software. It's a trade off when we bought the Note 3 over say, the HTC One. The stereo speakers on it are amazing.
On the other hand there's more potential for the headphone out to be improved.

I installed the viper mod yesterday, it makes a difference once you tweak it. This vid has a good walkthrough of installing it as well as some messing around with different settings while music is playing.

I'm not an audiophile (and if i was my phone wouldnt be my source of music) so with viper mod it sounds good enough for me, for what little I use the phone to listen to audio.

Sandisk Sansa Clip+ with Rockbox system
Which is better?
Does anyone has both of them?
while i did had a sansa some times ago (now it's dead ), i can tell you sansa (or any PMP) is better better in audio quality than a "mixed" device like a smartphone.
reason is, they've dedicated hardware to do that job, they just play music, and they do it via hardware decoding, most of the times, and they are designed to work for hours and hours with a single battery charge.
phones, instead, have to deal with other processes, like calls, wifi, and so on; moreover, they work software side, and playing music will drastically reduce battery time
however, there's always a big variable: headphones.
you could have the best player in the universe, but with a crappy pair of earpiece, there's no ifs or buts
Thanks for reply.
I see, and decide to buy a Clip+ for my UE TF10.
Besides, I just looked up Sardinia on GoogleMaps, it's really a big island that I haven't noticed before. I have been travelled in Rome for 2 days.

The largest downside of a mixed device such as the Nexus S would have much more to do with various forms of interference coming from the other chips and electronics all huddled up next to each other, and possibly from heat too. You won't find a difference between "software" and "hardware" decoding here either, the clip simply uses a SoC much like the Nexus too, just much smaller with less features.
Playing music drastically reduces battery time on the Nexus S without Deep Idle enabled, with it there is a much less severe battery drain though. On newer Tegra3 devices, for example, battery drain is even less as only a much weaker, and more efficient, core is used to decode audio (a relatively easy task), saving even more power.
As you said though, sound quality is only as high as the weakest link - from the bitrate to the dac, amp and ear/headphones. I absolutely love the Sansa Clip+ though, there is nothing that compares to it's capabilities, price point, portability, etc. I intend to get one (or two) sometime soon, if not just to have one permanently hooked up in the car and as a backup, even though my Nexus S is my main source of music.

I just checked that Hifiman RE-0 is a 64 Ohms earphone. It's amazing that Nexus S can drive a earphone directly with such a high impedance. Can you get enough volume from this combination?
So, in your opinion, the output power of Nexus S is greater than Clip+, right?

Found some interesting videos showing off the video and audio capturing performance of the S4 and HTC One.
Full review can be found here: http://blogs.computerworld.com/smartphones/22096/samsung-galaxy-s4-vs-htc-one-camera
HTC One
Galaxy S4
We already knew the HTC One had very good audio recording quality, that said, I'm very impressed with the S4's audio recording quality as well.
Yup. Although I do go to concerts, I never record the live performance. Still, it's good to see the GS4 can handle audio recording pretty decently even in that environment.
Is it just me or does S4 in this video have significantly better audio? Sounds more clear and less noisy?
Camera, HTC looks a bit more saturated than S4 to me.
When i listen to the two examples on my one the one's recording is clearly better, the sgs 4 sounds quite high pitched, the singers voice and cymbals aren't great.
Let's just hope HTC doesn't have to remove those microphones.

I wanna know how well it does with loud music though because all Samsung handsets in the past have struggled so much you might as well not bother.

I listened to one of the other videos and the HTC One sounds better there where it had more bass..... so I'm afraid it'll suffer from the same issues.
I also don't get why the FoV is so narrow, it's nice in a way because it is more zoomed in, however that is the only situation really where you'd want that.
Both are very impressive quality, I still can't quite understand the rationale of recording gigs rather than just enjoying them, but at least doing it now means you get a decent recording and not an unintelligible mess.

+1 probably subjective but I prefer the more clearer vocals without much background distortion. Both sound good obviously.
I wonder which one is more "accurate" though.
It's pretty common that a less accurate sound is more appealing to the ear (the reason why stuff like Beats is liked). I'd rather a more "accurate" sound be recorded; I can always apply the processing afterwards but I can't remove it if it's already there.
Ok I have to be honest while listening to it carefully on my Genius speakers the S4 sounded more sharp and more detail while the HTC One had bad noises lol
Haha post this in the HTC side the comments will lean more HTC LOL this threads funny every time I see this year after year whos better Sammy or HTC . Well I have the one and the I9500 octs on the way and the sprint s4 soon too . But last time around s3 was louder less clear than HTC also cam on HTC in tests with my friends s4 HTC has a slight edge on the cam quality but s4 has more features . I can say I'm not biased to either cause both are great the childish anger is silly though .

So they have a defective mic, these things happen.
Wow, on my AKG K240 Studio Headphones the One really sounds distorted while the S4 sounds absolute clear. I am actually thrilled how good the recording with the S4 sounds, even there is no "Voodoo Sound" (anybody remember this from the S1?). There is a heavy pumping on the One where the S4 seems to handle the dynamic much better.
Really good job Samsung! :good:
Yep, as the title says, I found a good pair of headphones with mic that you may like, it's nothing new, but nothing that I could find in the Nexus 4 forum either...
Here it is! "Sony MDR-ZX300AP/L" made specifically for Android phones (according to Sony's website).
Weird side note: they are OMTP (according to Sony chat representative), and AFAIK, Nexus 4 is CTIA, so I decided to grab a CTIA<-->OMTP adapter, which only inverts the 2 cables that differ from CTIA/OMTP, funny thing is, when I connected the headphones with the adapter, they worked perfectly (also tested the mic), then I decided to give it a try without the adapter... guess what... they worked too (plus mic)! WTF they were not supposed to work....
Anyway, I decided to share this finding to you, I have to specify that mine is the latest revision (AFAIK) from Nexus 4 *White*, so I'm totally clueless if they changed something in the hardware to make them compatible with both CTIA/OMTP...
I also paired the headphones with a computer adapter, so now I have a computer headset (mic works too!) "StarTech MUYHSFMM 3.5mm 4 Pin to 2x3 Pin 3.5mm Headset Splitter Adapter - F/M"
Final notes, mic quality is 4 out of 5, not the best, not bad, there are other color(s) available, definitely sturdy and yet comfortable pair of headphones, build quality totally explains the price (it can be either good or bad, depends of your point of view, very good IMHO)...

I'm not saying it is negative!, just pointing out that there is certain price threshold where people with an educated ear need something better than the average $30-$50 headsets... (audiophiles )
For mere mortals such as me... this headset is very good, I'm still able to distinguish a weak spot in a range of frequency but I'm ok with that, bass is also a little weak for my taste but there is no microphone version of the XtraBass variant of this headset...
Talking about headsets, it surprised me to find out how other people prefer/user other more expensive headphones in their cellphones, poor DAC cannot even power such a high impedance! they need a FiOS amplifier to power them up... gosh... talking about obsessions...
There is a good reason of why many headsets/headphones have weak spots or poor bass, and this is obviously because they were designed to power up from weak sources (such as your cellphone's DAC), of course newer cellphones have improved a lot in this department allowing users to throw higher balls on the park (S4 by example)...

LOL, I am no audiophile. I just like my music to be clear and hit bass nice and crisp. But I do have the V-Moda M100's in my collection lol. I use that on my N4 mostly, but I use the M100s on my N7 and laptop at home.
When I want in ears, my go to ones used to be the Sol Republic Amps HD. Great headphones for the price and are tangle free. I just got some Munitio NINES 9mm in ears and the bass just blows me away. I am not a bass heavy listener, so I had to lower the volume on a lot of my devices lol. I gave my wife the Shure SE215 clears for a flight recently and she thanked me because she needed them when on a flight where there were a bunch of minors on a flight without parents and of course were loud. The lady next to her asked if how she could deal with all the noise and my wife said...what noise? I had my headsets in. They were clear so you can hardly see them if you aren't looking so that is a plus lol.
Bottom line, there are lower end headphones like the google ones, or sony ones that do the deed well on its own. I am not saying they shouldn't be used, far be it. I say try it and if you are happy, then that's all that matters right?

You are damn right, you gotta use whatever makes you happy, if it costs more than $100dlls.. the heck with it! buy it for the sake of happiness.
Hi all
Ordered my 32gb, white N5, which should be delivered early next week.
But while anxiously waiting and reading first feedbacks, I had a question that seemed to have not been answered yet.
What about audio jack quality? I don't expect a smartphone to drive a high spec earbud like a professional DAC, but the N4 was a bit disappointing. Muddy bass, irritating highs, it was definitely not enough for my Fidelio S2.
So what to expect from the N5? Does it come with a Wolfson DAC (I don't think so) or with the same DAC the G2 is equipped with? How does it sound?
i would imagine it uses a Qualcomm dac like the N4 before it only perhaps an updated one. i found the N4 to sound alright on my Sure SE535's but bass not as clear / punchy as any wolfson ive had previously.
if you goto the snapdragon S800 page if i recall it does talk about the DAC
Also the S800 now has a Dedicated DSP processor and 4.4 uses direct audio tunneling to the DSP so it will be interesting to see how this will effect the audio quality to.
EDIT: from what i understand tho the Qualcomm DAC's are more analytical in sound they tend to give detail and lack warmth in the sound.
How is the volume? I'm hearing impaired and I was always listening my music on full volume.
I read somewhere that the N5 would be louder. Can someone confirm this for me?
audio is a big one for me as well.
if it isnt a big improvement over the n4 it will be getting sold. Ive been spoiled with my htc one after having the n4.

yeah, I used to listen my music on my ipod touch 64GB but it broke down. Just recently I started using my N4 as my daily music-"machine" D) and google music all access is great. However, the N4 was just not loud enough for some albums (usually older and quieter stuff) and 16GB weren't much enough.
I hope my new N5 white 32GB will be better as music player... I will find out at the latest on monday..
Just pasting my comment from a discussion on G+, some may find it useful:
From a quick test I believe it sounds better than my good ol' Nexus 4. The sound is a bit more bass-y, though I'm not sure if it's just "coloured", or the fact that Nexus 4's sound is a bit on the "tinny" side (note: I'm not using audiophile-grade gear, just slightly(?)-above-the-average Klipsch S4 in-ears). I'd say the sound is more balanced now. Also, output appears to be higher than on the Nexus 4.
Take the above with a grain of salt, this is a matter of personal preference after all. For proper analysis you should wait for Supercurio or someone with the proper tools + time to do it.
Edit: Before anyone asks about external DACs, just tried to connect my ODAC hoping for some sound to play from my speakers. No luck. Not even with a Y-Cable so I guess we're going to have to rely on custom kernels again.

Thanks!
With higher output, do you mean more volume, louder?
I also have Klipsch S4 (II) and I found it already quite (too?) bassy on my N4

Got the S4 (I), not sure if there's a difference!
Yep, that's what I meant about the output, sorry for the confusion.
Indeed. I hope the audio is better than the n4. Heck, my i9100 has better audio quality than the n4.

I'm coming from a GNexus and when I plug my phone into the aux jack in my car it sounds absolutely terrible. It's just horribly muffled and muddy compared to virtually anything else I've plugged in.
Anyone know what kind of improvements I can expect? Was the N4 any better than the GNexus? It's pretty embarrassing to want to share a song with friends and after someone unplugs their iphone my phone sounds like garbage.

Nope nooope no no no no no nopity nope no no no. I'm sorry but having owned both Galaxy S2 and Nexus 4, the Nexus 4 definitely has better music-playing quality through headphones. 100%.
Will receive my Nexus 5 hopefully Monday!
Hopefully the audio quality can compete with a Samsung Galaxy S3 + Boeffla Sound Engine. I´ll really miss this one
I've been an iPhone user since the 3GS, and one of my main uses for it was for listening to music. The Nexus 5 being my first android device, I found that the sound quality out of the headphone jack is different but still very good (better stereo separation then what I was getting on my iPhone 4, but low frequencies seem cut off and treble seems a bit boosted.)
Unfortunately, the volume is way too low for anything outside of private listening (even then, it's barely sufficient.) It definitely will be annoying trying to listen outdoors or even in a noisy room.
I've been searching here and a few other places (mostly head-fi) and found that low volume has been a common complaint among most android devices. Here and on other android centric forums, people recommend getting the volume booster apps. I tried them and wasn't satisfied. For the most part they don't really work. It seems that all they do is boost the EQ, which is definitely not a solution.
Unfortunately, since most people on head fi are audio geeks, their solution is to grab a bulky external headphone amp, which I am not even considering.
What stood out to me was that some of the more knowledgeable people recommended swapping kernels, which, if its a solution to my problem, at this point is the only reason I see for rooting the device.
I see some threads about changing out the kernels on other phones, but will I need to wait until they are customized for the N5, or are they pretty universal? And is this usually the best solution for this problem?
Thanks a lot guys.
Strange as mine is perfectly loud enough. Are you a bit deaf perhaps? Or maybe you haven't turned the volume up to max (it has a limit to protect your hearing, which you must consent to go any louder by tapping the conformation).

Yes, this is a common issue amongst Android phones, particularly for those who route the headphone jack to a car stereo or something similar.
The best way to handle is through a custom kernel. I've used Faux123's kernel and his companion "Faux Sound" app to do this, though other kernels also have sound features. It's global through the system, so no worrying about boosting EQs in individual apps, etc.
Kernel hacking for the N5 is well under way in the "Original Android Development" section. Good luck!

PS. Rooting has a lot of advantages. There's really few reasons NOT to root.
The solution to all this is quite simple: buy in ears. Even without sound those things give you private space in the crowd. Then volume on 60-70% is more then enough for me.

Lol my hearing is actually fine. For in the house, I'm fine (I'm not even cranking it all the way up.) It's for outdoors and other high noise environments (the gym, planes, buses, trains, etc.) that I am concerned. Also, when I plug the auxiliary cable from the headphone jack to my cars line in, I will have to crank the volume up higher than I did with my iphone, putting unnecessary stress on my car stereo.
I went into settings ---> sound ---> Volumes and adjusted there. But it when I adjust the volume there, it is the same adjustment as the volume rocker. Is there another place where I can adjust that safety limit you mentioned? If you can point me toward that, I would greatly Appreciate it!
Thanks

Thanks a lot! Let me rephrase, this is my priority! haha, I'm sure I'm going to have a lot of fun with android customization.

I am using in ears- Klipsch S4. I've been thinking about ordering the double flange tips.
Thanks!
