PX5 MTCE_LM dashcam/dvr recording woes - MTCD Android Head Units Q&A

I have an (Auto)Pumpkin PX5 unit running MTCE_LM_V2.81_1 firmware (Oreo) and I can't get the damn thing to record video with any dashcam apps other than the stock "DVR" app that came pre-installed. They all preview just fine but as soon as I hit record the unit freezes then reboots.
This unit is replacing an older similar unit (RK3188) which I used for a couple of years with a camera I have installed in my car - I know the camera works and I know the SD Cards work as I used them with the old unit.
I've tried saving to numerous locations with all the various programs hoping that maybe one of my SD cards had gone bad, I've tried the 3 different USB ports available on the unit, different camera orientations, volume on/off, GPS tracking on/off, I've tried literally everything I can think of - including searching threads the internet for a few hours now.
Anyone else having similar issues? Or better yet, can anyone else confirm they have this working somewhere?

It won't work, I tried every app I could find and the only one that works is the built in one.

Yes. That's why I choosed to buy a stand alone dashcam instead of a simple usb cam. It's a lilttle more expensive (not too much, in my case), but it offers more functionality, like the crucial g-sensor for automatic fixing of recordings in case of a crash, not possible with our head units that lacks a gyroscope... Stand alone dash cam also doesn't slow down the head unit with background recording activity and if you (like I did) buy a wifi model, you can also manage it from the head unit anyway, simply installing the specific manufacturer's app on it! Last thing, I powered my dash cam directly from one of the USB ports on the back of my head unit, so it's swiched on and off automatically by the car and the installation is super clean without any wire in sight. I'm using a YI Mini Dash Cam, by the way.

Just a heads-up that I tried installing Hal9k's ROM 3 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...nt/rom-hal9k-rom-3-mtcd-e-head-units-t3847477) in order to try to resolve the recording issue and, while I do enjoy a few features the custome ROM has brought along with it, it did not resolve the issue. I am guessing that it is a firmware issue of some nature and we're just going to have to wait and see what else might come-about to fix it.

see if this helps

Nameless Headunit Reviews / Experiences

I'm looking for an Android headunit and was wondering what everyone's opinion was on the various no name manufacturers? So far I've tested a few Cusptech units, but noticed several flaws. I'm sure if I had access to the MCU source code or schematics, I could fix the issues myself. Ultimately it'd be nice to be able to use a custom ROM on it.
In any case, here's my take on the CP-F011 from Cusptech. Please add to this thread with your experience for other units. Hopefully this can provide some guidance for anyone looking to purchase an Android headunit.
OS / General
The units I purchased all came with Android 4.4.2 installed. After a few days of use, I haven't noticed any serious issues with the user interface aside from it being seemingly cluttered. One nice feature it has is integrated WiFi. The antenna is internal, so the range is pretty limited though.
Power On / Off - One frustrating thing for me is that the unit always has to boot up when the accessory line is turned on, despite the constant hot line always having power. It'd be much nicer if the unit would go into lower power mode rather than completely shutting down. Interestingly, the tuner and sound come on almost immediately while the OS is booting.
AM/FM Radio - With a plain old AM/FM antenna, this tuner is essentially worthless. On my stock Ford nav unit, I get excellent reception across the FM band. The Cusptech unit however picks up nothing but static with maybe a slight hint of a radio station here and there. I'll try again with an amplified antenna to see if it makes a difference.
Bluetooth - In the Android settings menu, there's an option to turn on Bluetooth. When selected, it tries to turn something on, then shows an error message indicating failure, and shuts off again. Despite the UI showing Bluetooth off, the unit broadcasts as "Apple" and allows a phone connection with my HTC One.
GPS Receiver / Navigation Apps - I hope to test this in the coming days. By default the unit is configured for Waze, which I've never used. After playing around with a bit, I'll see about using Google Maps.
Rear-view Camera - No complaints here. When voltage is applied to the reverse line, the display flips to the rear camera instantly. No picture-in-picture functionality, but that also means the rear-view camera works while it's booting.
Sound Quality - I haven't had a chance to connect this unit with the appropriate speakers, so I can't comment on this yet. Will update when normal speakers arrive.
On a side note, if anyone knows of a unit that someone has been able to write custom MCU code for, please let me know. I'd be more than happy to contribute my software/hardware development expertise in making it better. At this point, if the enclosures weren't such a PIA to build, I'd design my own.

Android Auto on Galaxy S6

Hi All,
I've just gotten a car with native Android Auto support and I was looking forward to using this.
During the test drive in October 2015 (still on 5.1.1) I managed to get it working but sadly in my new car it's not working.
Due to the great number of variables I'd like to hear your experiences as well. I've tried Noble Rom and Extrestolite with similar results. The android auto app setup screen appears very briefly and then crashes back to the home screen.
I've also tried multiple USB cords to make sure this isn't the problem.
My car is a Skoda Superb with the Columbus infotainment system. This same system is used in various Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat cars.
I would really like to hear if you managed to get Android Auto working, on what radio / head unit and what rom and Android version.
If you had to do any extra steps to get it to work, please let me know too.
Thanks!

Thanks for the help. In the end the solution was both simple and insane.
Turns out it was a problem with the time setting. Even though my car had the correct time set I had to go into the settings of the car and set it to Auto (GPS) and set the correct time zone.
After that it started working and has been working consistently.

which DVR app works fine?

I run malaysk rom 4.4.4 and have a USB dvr camera installed.
I cannot find a app which works fine and what i want.
It should do the following:
- start on bootup radio
- option to go to automaticly to background and start recording automaticly
- option to choose storage location
Tried a lot of apps only one does this but the app constanlty crashes when i open the settings menu (autoboy BlackBox).
When i run the app on my table (lolipop) it works fine, but on my rk3388 mtcb radio (with latest malaysk rom) it crashes when opening setting menu to configure it.
Anyone have an idea which app can do this
I too would like recommendations for my MX (Witson) unit as currently the stock DVR records to the internal 16gb despite having a 4gb in GPS slot and 32gb in 2nd slot. The app has no option to select storage. Very annoying as finishes all the space up and slows unit down.
Thanks
I run Dailyroads Voyager.

You may have to use the PCV Startup Builder to put an entry in to start it up automatically on boot.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pcv.installrecovery.builder&hl=en
I have it starting automatically, in the background, set storage to the GPS card, and it works fine with every USB cam I have ever tried it with.
I use AutoBoy https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.happyconz.blackbox&hl=en its the only on I've found that lets you flip the camera 180 for when you have it mounted on the windscreen. It starts on boot, monitors the front camera and location via GPS, it also has youtube upload.

Aaaahhh tried on phone like i do before trying on head unit like i always do and can't save to either SD card on the MTCD! Gives me option on phone Galaxy S7. Frustrated as seemed like the best one
Which camera do you use exactly? I hope I will soon receive the new MTCD unit for Peugeot 508 (WITSON) and I am also thinking of purchasing the DVR camera but can't decide what type shall I buy. There is not much information about the available cameras on internet, not many videos on youtube etc., almost no posts here on the forum.
Does someone have the Joying HD SONY IMX322... camera? They say in the description it will only work with JOYING head unit. Is it true? Does it require any special app that is available only in their ROM? According to the pictures it has SD card slot so I think it stores the files on this card, not in the head unit??? So it should start recording after connecting to any USB charger like any other camera?
Or is any other USB or so called webcam better? There are plenty of them like Genius and so on...
Thanks for comments.
Could you help me to identify my software, please?
Hello, everybody,
I bought my Peugeot 508 SW with installed DVR and I can't find out, what software is installed, there? I would like to update maps into my iGO at least. But I can't find any input for SD card. Probably, it is hidden somewhere into its body... But, I am not sure, because of I can't identify it, so far.
Could you help me to identify my software, please?
It is HMI: MX010.1.1, MCU Version "MX801.151211(54)", "MMP.2015.9.16.14.2", whatever does it mean?
Thank you very much.

(resolved) Seicane unit keeps rebooting/powering off

*******Edit: I was able to resolve most of the issues I've been experiencing with my Android Unit. *******
Incorrect Time- I needed to update my firmware, as suggested by users in the forum. The seller was able to send me an updated version at the time.
SWC- My resolution mentioned down below. I may change it back to CAN key and see if the CANBUS connection issue I had was the real culprit.
Random Power cycling- User error. I didn't realize I didn't plug the power cable completely into the unit.
A/C Display- I have @brettf to thank for this. I initially switched cables like he mentioned below, but found they didn't work THE FIRST TIME I did this, so I switched the cables back to their original [incorrect] positions. The second time around, ie. yesterday, I decided to try it again, but this time, I took into account my CANBUS settings. I changed the CANBUS controls to the last ACCORD_7(Chan........) setting and it finally worked for my system. So, now I understand what most users have been talking about in regards to the temperature only being in Celsius. If there's a fix for this that I may have missed, I'd highly appreciate it.
GPS signal- Lol unintentional user error this time, without realizing I even made a mistake. My unit wasn't labeled with which SMA connector was which for the GPS antenna or Bluetooth antenna, so I had accidentally switched them around during my initial installation. I decided to actually take a look at the diagram on AliBaba's seller page and lo and behold, they were indeed switched around. Previously, it would take over 5 minutes for a signal to be fixed and there was no guarantee it would be stable even on a clear day, but after the switch, the GPS signal is strong and fixes immediately to a signal now.
Bluetooth - Even though I'm not an audiophile, the music played from A2DP sounds even better following the aforementioned sma switch around. Tbh, I'm not tech savvy enough to understand how either the GPS or bluetooth have been working at all after all this time since my initial installation, but it works like it's supposed to now.
Mic- I ordered another external mic, so whenever it comes in, I'll try to update and see if there are any improvements with the quality, as I've realized my old mic sounded "distant" before when it was connected to my iSimple device.
Initial issue mentioned below:
Hello. I recently purchased this Seicane unit:
[Alibaba (**dot**) com/product/62132856562/10-1-Inch-Android-9-0.html?tracelog=null
I've been having the usual issues that I kind of anticipated with these Chinese head units *(ie. time was not set correctly when I initially installed it but I was able to fix it with an update, steering wheel controls no longer work(fixed), climate settings I press on the unit do not display on the screen but the A/C still works (fixed), just to name a few examples). But one problem I didn't anticipate was, my unit continuously reboots/powers off after I turn on the car and/or the screen may not come on unless I turn the ignition on and off again (fixed). With that being said, the Bluetooth cuts in and out as well and microphone quality is subpar at best, even after using an external mic from a previous isimple unit used with my original navigation unit.
So far, I honestly like this Seicane unit and I don't have buyer's remorse, but these little annoyances are starting to add up. Is there anyway I can fix these issues, especially the annoying rebooting? Thank you.

I didn't want to go that route yet until I troubleshoot it myself. Plus, shipping to China is expensive, so that'll be my last ditch solution if I'm not able to figure out these menial issues.
Others here have experienced these problems you should be able to find their threads. From what I've read before the rebooting was linked to the HU losing internet access but those were units with a SIM card port. Setting airplane mode helped when they had no SIM and/or were connected to the phone hotspot. But if there's a problem with a SIM in relocating the antennas was needed otherwise the unit needs repair.
For the HVAC display you need a CANbus decoder specific to your car. It's not unusual for a seller to not include it unless you told them you need it. You have to be very literal and specific with them. One guy received the wrong one and only fixed it by convincing another seller (Dasaita) to sell him one. In your case it worked before and no more after the update then you may need to try different settings in the CANbus menu. Did you get your update from Seicane? If not you should ask them for one.

How would I go about actually changing the wires around though? Do I just pull them out of the harness? Lol, I'm not an electrician, so I would prefer not to break the unit.
I may have figured out the rebooting issue: when I went back to finally check the back of the unit, I found the power cable with the blue harness wasn't completely connected to the unit. Whoops, lol!
I'll test it out whenever I drive my accord again and see if this definitely fixed the rebooting issue.

Just pop them out of the connector. There's a little tab on the metal bit inside the connector. If you press it and pull the wire softly, it will pop out.

I was able to pop them out like you mentioned, but no changes. Luckily the a/c still works, so I guess I'll just leave it as is for now... Thank you for the guidance.
Follow up- so I was able to diagnose and fix the majority of the issues I listed thanks to you guys.
In terms of the steering wheel controls, Seicane's engineers failed to switch the steering wheel control settings in the factory settings to "SWC keys" before shipping it out. I found this setting only after attempting to install a universal SWC remote myself, so now I was able to retain both my original controls and the newly installed remote, which is a nice addition now. If you guys ever have issues with the car's original SWC settings when installing your unit, check your settings by going to:
CAR (Driving, navigation some settings) -> Factory Settings (passcode 126) -> Other -> Steering wheel keys assign -> ***Switch to SWC Keys if it's set to Can key***
Note- I'm not sure if the settings will differ per android software, but my unit is Android 9.0

Switch it back to Can Key and see if it you assign the key configurations.
SWC worked before I figured out the two CANBUS wires needed to be switched around but I don't feel the need to test if this will work in my car, so see if that may help.

CanBus works fine. Every Function works on the 78 Protokoll. Only the Steering Wheel buttons get a "double Input" but i only press once.
And if i switch to protokoll 46 the Steering Wheel Button works perfect but everything else from canbus does not work (Settings for the car)

I tried with android 9 same error I updated to android 10 still the error, please can you help me with some ideas, I really believe it is a hardware issue and not software. regards

MTCE GS PX5 USB storage issues

Short version:
Recently updated to the latest Hal9k 9.0 from stock 8.0. also updated the MCU. I had a couple USB drives I always used and never had an issue with them. Now I do.
After restarting the car, the USB drive (same with SDcards) says "there is a problem with the drive. Click here to fix" which to fix it, it wants me to format the drive. I did exactly that on one USB drive and still had the same problem.
Long version:
My only real complaint with the stock rom (and reason to update) was a lack of customization. Mainly the music app. I was using Musicolet rather than stock because the stock app is basic at best. But every time I started the car I had to manually click play and it would restart the last song rather automatically continue where it left off. Same with a few other local music apps I tried. Luckily, the upgrade to Hal9k's ROM fixed that problem...
The problem I'm having now is... Everything works fine until I park, turn the car off, etc... I get back in, start the car, and the song comes back on and plays like it should until the buffer is empty. Then tries to skip to the next song. But can't because of the storage error. It says "there is a problem with the drive. Click here to fix" which to fix it, it wants me to format the drive.
If I hold power to completely restart the stereo, it works perfectly fine until the next time I turn the car off and on again.
Tried various different things. Including using the stock app. All had the same result. Same with or without the "Reset USB devices when booting or waking up" enabled in the Mod settings.
At a loss for this. Hopefully someone has an idea.
First I tried a 128GB USB stick that was overheating causing it to drop out while I was driving. (Never had that issue before updating with the stereo but do have that issue on a PC when mass copying data to/from it. Figured it would be fine for the short burst of access required for MP3 playback)
The I tried a 32GB and 16GB USB had the storage error issues described above. And a 64GB and 8GB SDcard also having errors on wakeup.

Little surprised to have had zero comments. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Found if I pause the music before turning off the car it has the storage issue less. But, that kills the smooth no touch playback I'm hoping to obtain.
Really wanting to turn off the car, have music pause, get back in, start the car, and music picks up where it left off 100% without touching the stereo.
I do doordash, ubereats, etc for side cash and as a result can be in and out of my car a lot in short periods.
Don't be surprised everybody's in isolation watching Netflix instead of at work passing time on XDA Anyway, you should ask your question on the appropriate Hal9K thread. It would seem USB doesn't get properly re-initialized on wake up. I remember a thread where someone removed a resistor to fix a similar issue with USB that caused WiFi to drop but that would only be advisable if the software can't be fixed. This solution might help you until Hal9K fixes it.
