Always on display keeps stopping after re-install - Samsung Galaxy S8 Themes, Apps, and Mods

I rooted my device and happily started debloating.
AOD (which I really do not need) also had to go, but it seems this is giving me issues with my lock screen. The issue being that there is no clock widget installed, causing me to have a lock screen only showing an ICE number. There is minimal and not being able to tell the time at a glance...
I tried re-installing, but it keeps force closing on me (cannot modify the settings, device freezes for short times). No permanent damage; but I cannot get it to work.
Tried clearing cache and data for AOD, of no avail.
Anyone know what I am missing in order to get it re-installed?
Thank you!

Still on stock ROM; had to use Odin just yesterday to fix an issue with the Play Store (same thing; issue, had to uninstall, continued force closes).
How can I flash the stock ROM (given it is 3,5 GB)? Put it on my SD card and flash with TWRP?
Thanks.

Just download the stock ROM zip for your device and carrier from sammobile and Flash using odin using download mode on your phone.
If you were rooted is simpler, just download a stock based ROM like SolDier's and flash it through TWRP.

How about installing AOD and then setting it as a system app with Magisk? There's a mod available to do that. Maybe it'll work then? Definitely worth a try before reflashing stock.
Also make sure you install a compatible version from APK Mirror. Most newer versions aren't compatible with the Galaxy S8. Go ahead and install 3.2.80.4 (that's the one I have installed on my phone right now).
Perhaps try installing that version and then try it out before going through the procedure of installing Magisk.
Hope that works for you.

see whether it disabled or no

This works almost! No continued forced closes; however the screen on action takes forever (in comparison to other actions on the S8),
I am just wondering how come the re-install does not work properly. Titanium removed the APK; I install another one.
Why is AOD acting weird?

Bootloop after Android Pay install

Wanted to try Android Pay. Am a SPH-G925P on stock OH1 rooted with UniKernel v8 and TWRP. Disabled SuperSU, downloaded and installed Android Pay. Added my first card and got a message that an app was blocking screen access to the app. Thought it might be my Apex Launcher. Went back to stock TouchWiz launcher, same message. Made sure Adblock was off (it was because it couldn't acquire root). Rebooted and got softbrick.
Figured Android Pay had messed something up. Wiped cache and Dalvik in TWRP, still stuck. Restored my TWRP backup from 2 weeks ago, no joy. Reflashed Unikernel v8, still stuck at Sprint Splash.
Any thoughts on what rebooting with SuperSU disabled messed up? Next up is reflashing stock OH1 and/or factory reset, but thought there might be an easier fix.

I'll try that. As expected, flashing stock OH1 fixed it. I'll get TWRP and root (excuse to go to UniKernel v9) back on and update everything and make a fresh backup before I try again. That will make it easier if it softbricks again.

Hey Sooop, just about ready to try Android Pay install again. Searching found that Lux brightness app may be the culprit for blocking screen access. Wanted to check with you. When you disabled su, which version of Unikernel and which firmware were you using? Did you disable su, reboot, install Pay, then re-enable su?

I'm on OH1 and I did full unroot then setup cards then was able to use. I couldn't get it to work after rerooting. But the good thing is being that the kernel is rooted, you can use it, then simply reboot and you're rooted again. I have to unroot from the su app when I use it

Got it. That makes sense from what Google posted about the use of their app and why it would never work with rooted devices. With the new chip embedded credit cards, and requirements for merchants to have terminals that accept them, I may just stay old school. Can't see having to unroot and reboot every time I want to use it. Although, I could probably use NFC Retag and Tasker to use my credit card to both initiate unroot and then reboot the device once I had paid.

Looking to Update Software to Most Recent Version

I have a rooted Verizon device that is running stock 4.1.2, since I have the unlimited data and use the free hotspot toggle.
Well, almost none of the current apps works with my phone anymore, its getting very frustrating. I'd like to unroot my phone and just get to the most recent software, then buy Foxfi for the hotspot...will that work?
Is there a better option? Can I upgrade the software without unrooting ?
Any help would be apprecaited, thanks!

If you want to take the OTA update you will need to unroot. I would highly advise against this as you will permanently lock your bootloader down but if that's what you choose then so be it

I see foxfi hasn't been updated in the play store in nearly 3 years. Some roms have the Hotspot feature built in as far as what roms have it built in, as far as newer roms that much I don't know. I'm running the last build of CleanRom and its built in.
I understand a lot of apps currently require a newer version of Android to run. My suggestion would be to check out the development forums for the VZW S3 and see which roms have it built in rather than having to buy the app itself

I tried reading up, but this seems intimidating. Maybe you can point me in the right direction...my ONLY needs are a working camera (slow motion would be VERY nice to have if available), hotspot tether that I can use without paying the monthly fee (I have unlimited data), and software version that actually works with apps from the playstore.
As far as I know, I have 4.1.2 software, unlocked bootloader and I'm rooted.

I'll also chime in. If OP is looking to update his phone, there are 2 paths. The stock path, which will be up to KitKat based roms (android 4.4) because that was the last update the S3 ever received. You could install something like superliterom (found in our android developement thread). But from your needs (hotspot, and camera) you can go all the way on to marshmallow (android 6) using CM13 which is what I'm running. The only bugs now are bluetooth (it may crash if you're playing music through bluetooth and receiving a call through bluetooth like in a car for example), gps is slow to lock (which is a problem is most of the CM roms), and some minor front camera bugs ie. instagram will crash, but every other camera and video camera/video calling app will work that I've tried. If I was in your shoes, I would try CM13 to see if you like it, and then bounce down from there to a 4.4 or 4.3 rom as a solid 2nd or third choice. I went from cleanrom, to alliance 4.3, to cm12.1 (I could never get gps to lock on this, but everything else worked), to cm13. They are all solid. Even something like slimkat 4.4 has pretty good reviews. But don't ever take the OTA update...there is no point in that now besides locking your phone forever and limiting the usability of your phone.
I'm sorry if this is a really stupid question, but if I install cm13 will I lose all my text messages, emails, app settings, etc.??

Yes. I wouldn't suggest updating to a newer rom without wiping the internal storage. You could always backup text messages. Emails automatically save to the Gmail app and the app settings well that can't be recovered but you could always set it the way it was previously

Ok, so I've downloaded "Oct-M-R1-6.0.1 for d2vzw", the MD5 checksum, and "open_gapps-arm-6.0-stock-20160806".
I have just installed TWRP 3.0.2 on my device and it appears to be working.
Now what?
Put the files onto my microsd or onto my phone storage?
Install from TWRP and that's it?
I have titanium backup, should I run that first? OR is there a backup option from twrp??
VERY specific directions would be appreciated! Thanks LOL
PS - One last thing, what developer options need to be checked or unchecked if any in my phone settings.

In developer options you really only need to enable USB debugging.
As far as installing the rom putting it on your SD card should be efficient or once in TWRP you can mount the internal and move it into there if connected to a pc. As far as installing it's pretty straight forward.
Wipe internal completely but DO NOT wipe your SD card. Install the zip first then gapps and ensure you wipe cache and dalvik. Once done reboot and let the device sit for about 10 minutes without touching it to let the rom settle down, once done just reinstall everything. I do not recommend to install apps via titanium backup (i.e. Data for those apps) anymore questions feel free to ask

The rom may of not played well with the device. I installed lollipop on my S3 and it was quite slow. I'd say restore the backup but you can try installing it again but I forewarn you that it may just not work at all

@jds3118 - just installed this and it's up and running right now with no issue.
I'm on ATT 935A with 935U PG9 Bootloader v2 and this new PI2 code. See screenshot.
I noticed on this ROM and the EchoE rom the EZ Package Disabler Pro won't work (license check is saying fails), so I am using TiBu to freeze apps.
Note to others, install does everything automatically, there is no Aroma for selecting any behaviors. The ROM will boot up with the AT&T logo and stay like that for about 15 mins (watch a tv show or something and come back; be patient, it will boot!).
android pay setup without issue. haven't been to a store yet though.

What were you running previous to this ROM? Did you flash directly over it, or did you wipe anything?
I am on rooted stock PI2 and having some issues. Wondering if I'd be okay without wiping data since it's the second firmware.

@jds3118
couple things i've noticed so far:
1. SuperSU prompted that the binary needed updating (2.78). I noticed that root on boot wasn't checked, so I checked that and rebooted, message went away.
2. Cannot login to snapchat. It complains when it is verifying the device. Sends you to: https://support.snapchat.com/en-US/a/failed-login
Please Note: Snapchat works best on devices running original software, and Snapchatters using a "rooted" Android device may experience issues. Rooted devices often circumvent Android security defenses and may not be compatible with Snapchat.
One other thing I am going to try over the weekend is to return to an AT&T v2 bootloader and reinstall this ROM. With the U firmware, I am not seeing any of the wifi calling, etc.
Also, your engboot mods are definitely the best I've tried so far. It would be cool if you had a flashfire zip just containing your kernel (and what other changes you make) and package that up (kind of like the v15 zip).
otherwise, this rom is pretty slick, going to give it a couple days to run apps and settle in.
thanks!

Noble rom nougat running on g920v !

Dont use noble nougat ! Use ultimate nougat under the unified development . There are 3 different versions either one is okay. Everything works on ultimate nougat but noble lags a good bit.
Each one has a description on what it does and has. All are bebloated + custom tweaks. Check them out. Any touchwiz rom should work. As long as ported to sg g920f.
You have to be on nougat stock firmware. At least thats all ive tried. You can try on 5.1 as long as you follow my guide. Go to this site - https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s6/general/root-nougat-s6-verizon-t3710864 and download the files he has on his post. Thats how you root on nougat.
If you are on nougat, switch to bootloader mode, open odin, and click on ap and select the eng root. Then reboot and go to settings/security and tick unknown sources. Then extract the unroot file you downloaded and run the file that says root.bat and give your phone a few minutes. It will restart and supersu will be installed. If it doesnt work the first time try again
Now you need to download flashfire. And download the custom touchwiz rom you want. Again you can find them under unified developement. And gapps if you want. I use aroma installer to pick what apps i want to be system apps.
Once you are rooted have supersu and flashire, youll need to set you year on the date back to 2013 or flashfire wont open correctly. It does that on my phone atleast you can try it out. When u have flashire open click on the + at the bottom right and click flash zip or ota. Click on the ron youve downloaded and then select the box next to mount system read and write . Then press the + button again and add a wipe action. Just leave it on what it automatically tics. Make sure you hold down on the wipe action before hitting the flash button at the bottom and put it above the rom installation. So youre phone restores first. Do not tick internal storage on the wipe action you will brick your phone bc no sd card.
Flashfire should take you through an aroma installer for the rom depending on the one youve downloaded. Make sure to pick g920f kernel.
Go through chek what you want and then install. As long as you hit the mount system read and write button on the wipe action back in flashfire it will install and not get stuck on %20 or %25. Once its done let it reboot your phone will come to a crash screen. A blue one with a warning sign saying software failure or something. You need to hold the power button volume down and homd button until it cuts off. The do the same thing to turn it on in download mode and flash the eng root file in ap again from odin and your phone will boot. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to boot.
I installed xposed and all kinds of other tweaks to this rom as well. Let me know how it works out for you . Im going to upload photos in the replies.
Able to flash and open twrp but no function.
Just Google a touchwiz rom ported to galaxy s6 and follow my instructions. I've tried 2 others. Everything seems to be working other than if you are not rooted there is intense lagging from time to time.
I have some questions, is this on 5.1.1 rooted with mrmikes root? Is the rom pre-rooted? Is it debloated? And does it have s health?
this needs a more in-depth description, when i tried it, i flashed it on 5.1.1, i got to the setup of the rom, i chose the international s6, i didnt know which one to choose, then the CSC variant, i chose one of them which had a description like "multi us, it started installing, it got to 25%, then the screen just went black, i opened rootatboot, it succesfully worked, but my phone screen is still black, what are we supposed to do?

For me the note fe rom downloads at 700kb/s why? roms usually download at like 7-8 mb/s
Not able to do it, When i flash stock nougat with odin, it gets stuck on the galaxy s6 logo after reboot. Then i factory reset and wiped cache partition, and its still stuck there. So i had no choice but to downgrade to 5.1 again. Now i flashed the pre rooted official nougat rom with flashfire, and once i was on nougat i was gonna flash the custom rom. But, when you try to flash something in flashfire on the pre rooted nougat rom it gives me an error saying an unknown error has occured. Now im back at rooted 5.1. Help anyone?

Would you like me to upload a backup of my rom that you can just flash in flashfire? Or post a video of me showing how to do this.

I'd reccommend video and flashfire, you can make a video of how to do it and make it easier by flashing it in flashfire, so a tutorial on how to flash it on flashfire correctly.
Followed the procedure but flashfire just remains blank on boot... why?

yes... followed everything to the letter. Was having issues with the flashfire but i downloaded the pro apk and it acquired root permission without crashing... I used flashfire .57 pro to flash the pre rooted rom but the flashfire in the pre rooted rom also crashed after aquiring root so I uninstalled it and downloaded the .73 pro apk and that worked but it doesn't flash the rom no matter what options I choose. Tried so many combinations... I put the wipe before the flash and i also tried vice versa, tried with flash procedure set to normal, recovery, download and all still came out with the same outcome = Blank flashfire with 2015-2017 screen. So i just restart the device and everything is normal. Using the pre rooted rom for now

Okay do everythig you did again but before opening flashfire you need to turn off wifi. Go to settings and date and time. Turn off automatic date and time and set year to 2013 then re open and use flashfire. That was my original problem.
I've tried everything to get mobile data and service to work that is the only bug but makes this thread a complete bust until I can find a work around or fix for it.

I use my s6 as a backup phone but something is wrong with my s7 so i use my s6 more, and i dont use a verizon sim so i use my s6 with no sim. So, if you can, can you make still make a video for it? other people who flash it might find a way to get service to work.

Tried to do a factory reset, now I can only book into TWRP

Hello folks,
I successfully installed TWRP and Magisk on G7 Power, without needing to use a stock image, using flug32's guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=81305325&postcount=358
(I didn't install Edxposed)
Restored apps and settings via Google Backup, installed ViperFX & CallRecorderFix from Magisk and increased media volume levels in BuildProp.. Everything was working fine for a couple of days, and then the camera kept giving me the Camera Busy error; the usual restore permissions, and restart phone fixes didn't sort it, so wanted to a factory reset. Tried this from settings, but of course, it just boots in TWRP. So then I saw a post that seemed to suggest that you have to do a wipe via TWRP to do this, and now it just boots back into TWRP, I presume that I have wiped something that is needed during normal startup.
Is it possible for me to get it to boot back into the stock image that is/was on the phone, and if so, how do I do a factory reset?
Or am I going to have flash another stock image (the RETGB doesn't seem to be available) following the instructions in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/g7-power/how-to/guide-moto-g7-power-supra-flash-to-t3927138

I think you are going to need to flash a stock rom.
Are you sure it was on software channel Retgb?
Not Tescogb or Eegb
It's a 1955-4 ?

I am pretty certain that it was on RETGB, as it came unlocked from another supplier, and I seem to remember checking after I had rooted it.
If I put Tescogb or Eegb on it, will that lock it to those networks ?
It is a 1955-4, so I presume RETEU is the best option for a compatiable unlocked ROM.

Using Tesco or EE will not lock it to those carriers
But there maybe some radio issues.
Yes you will likely have batter compatibility with a 1955-4 rom
Reteu does look like the best option.

Do I need to use the same version that I was on, 134-4, or shall I use the updated 134-7 one?
Is there anything else that I need to be aware of, or am I okay just following this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/g7-power/how-to/guide-moto-g7-power-supra-flash-to-t3927138

Either version should be fine.
But update will have newer security patch.
That guide is good.
