Hi
Just got my U12+ today. I've noticed that quite often if I unlock the phone by fingerprint, it shows the home screen but the screen is totally unresponsive. I can't click/touch anything.
It remains unresponsive, even if the screen times out (1min later) and then I reunlock.
The only way to fix it is to use the power button to switch off the screen and then it will work immediately afterwards when I unlock.
I have done multiple restarts, and 1 hard reset and it is still happening.
Any thoughts on what is causing/how to fix?
UPDATE:
I've spent quite a few hours googling and testing different setting options, and the issue seems to only occur when "Smart Display" is turned on.
If the Smart Display is on (either motion or always on) gets engaged, if I then unlock via Fingerprint, it shows the home screen, but the touch screen is totally unresponsive. It doesn't register any taps/touches (I turned on Dev options).
Is this a hardware or software issue? Anyone else experience this?
Thanks

Hi
Thanks
U12+ running 1.21.454.3
Totally stock. Only got the phone on Saturday.
Did one hard reset and issue still there.
In usage since my last update, it is 100% related to the Smart Display. Absolutely no issues when it is turned off. When I enable Smart Display, then it starts freezing again on unlock.
Hi,
I'm having the same problem too..
I got my set on the 15/09/18, Hong Kong Set.
Mine is currently on 1.25.708.3. But prior to the update, I am already having the same problem described by leginag.
I even tried to do a factory reset but the problem still surface. It will become unresponsive after waking up after a period of screen off (not sure how many minutes).
After turning off Smart Display ( thanks leginag!) , I'm able to use it flawlessly. I was about to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom rom though..
I think this problem is quite disruptive, especially when a call comes in, or when launching the camera app through the edge sense. I can only snap using the squeeze.
Nonetheless, I hope there are other alternatives to Smart Display though..
Hi, I've been having the same issue. Thanks for looking into it hopefully it gets fixed in the next update.

I hope it does get fixed. I reported it to HTC and they said they would forward it to their engineers. That was 2+ weeks ago, and nothing else heard back.
Best thing for you to do may be to submit a support ticket to HTC. If everyone who has the issues sends it in, this will flag it with their engineers that it is a wider problem.
Could you let us know your model/firmware?

I have contacted HTC and am awaiting a reply. My current software version is 1.25.708.3
Thanks.
Hoping this issue is software related. So far, only people with Asia models have reported it (only 3, but at least I'm not going crazy by myself!)
ASIA HK - x2
ASIA JP - x1
Got a response from HTC, saying it is a software issue and should be fixed in next update - around mid-October.
Today, I got information about that this issue will be solve by software update.
Moreover, it is arranged on around middle of October.

Thank you for this. I just got my u12+ and thought it was faulty.
Turned off smart display.
I'm having this problem as well, Asia HK.
Curious, is anyone also having problems with TWRP? I almost always get a nonresponsive screen when fastboot booting.
Just a heads up that the 1.30 update has fixed the issue for me.
Which is a relief. Not that I was missing using Smart Display, but just feel better not having an issues with my phone
Hi there,
I am using Asia HK and have the same problem with you.
But I still didnt receive any update patch for 1.30. May I ask which area did your phone belong to?

Asia TW and Asia JP have already received the 1.30 update (I had to manually check for it though). Hopefully HK will be soon!

I've had this issue twice, once on 1.25 and once on 1.30 so I do not think it is fixed yet but it has been very rare for me. Only twice since the phone launched but it is very inconvenient when it happens. I could only fix mine with a reboot.
Removing my original reply as I don't believe it relates to this bug after all!
(A Factory Reset sorted out my device, incidentally)

Hi,
My OPO is having some strange behaviors when it comes to the touchscreen. Not only I'm having the ghost touches (still no fix out, right?), but I'm also having a strange bug that makes the center portion of the screen unusable all the freaking time.
I made a video (sorry for the bad quality, the glitch about 25 seconds in and the general noobness ) showing the bug in action (sometimes it happens on the lock screen, which is infuriating cause I have to way of unlocking and have to wait until good guy OPO gets his **** together).
Anyway, is there anyone with a similar problem? any fix on the mind of an illuminated soul? or to the warranty (or lack of it) with it?
Thanks.

I have it too...When i wake up my phone sometimes i have to wait a few sec before the screen becomes responsive...It must be something related to touchscreen software or drivers, theyre really bugged as now.
Yea I also have it, I had it yesterday when i had to call cardstop when my wallet was stolen and my screen wasn't working.
Powered off for 5 min then only the bottom of the screen was was working.
hey guys Abhisek Devkota of CM says that is a firmware related issue caused by partnbers that gave drivers to cm..they now are working hard for it and in this month should be two updates..the firts with the workaround on the ota in the next days and the second with kernel patch

I hope so, its happening almost every time I unlock/try to unlock the phone now. its really annoying, specially during calls, yesterday I called a friend and he didn't pick up so the call went to the voicemail, since I didn't want to leave any message I tried to end the call, but because of this bug I had to put the phone to sleep and wake it up to end the call making me pay for a dam voicemail.
Any news on a fix for this ?
I am having this issue as well but it just started today and I have had the phone for about 3 weeks. After a few minutes of use my touch screen except for the navigation buttons and the status bar become unresponsive and I have to power cycle my device to get the screen working again.
It happened to me today as well. I sure it will be fixed but still glad I have my Nexus 5 till then.
I have found a temporary fix (at least for me). After trying out many different kernels I ended up with the XNPH22R Kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2780725). After a reboot the screen frooze but then recoverey without reboot. Now I had no freeze for around 30 hours without reboot. Still running the XNPH25R CM11s Rom.
Phone is rooted and unlocked.
There are also speculations that the freezes could be temperature related or at least partially.

I have my device unlocked, not coded - european version. It was all good no problems with anything.
Just last night i went to sleep and when I woke up in the morning I noticed this error on my S6:
"An error has occurred with the fingerprint sensor. if this message appears repeatedly, restart your device."
Clearing cache did not help. Nor dit the factory reset...
Tried running fingerprint test by typing *#0*# on the phone app but it stopped with no result so I guess there must be something wrong with the fingerpring scanner.
Honestly I am very dissapointed and must admit that i would not expect one of the major funcionalities to stop working after less than 48 hours from buying.
Anyone else having this?

Kind of.
Apparently some of the SGS6 units are faulty and have loose home button or not well clipped or anyhow you describe it.
So its a hardware problem. They should repair it by replacing the front screen, glass and home button or just give you another phone.
Give it to the warranty.
Today I am very dissapointed in SGS6, would not buy it another time. It is not that spectacular at all.
Better wait for Note 5 or choose another brand.

Thanks for the info. Must say, I share your view. The phone looks nice but thats about the best thing I can say about it at the minute!
I'll speak to Samsung in the morning and see what they say.
Sometimes it happens to me too but its very rare and I just have to unlock the phone via password and then the sensor restarts working. I dont think (hope) its a hardware issue.
Well mine is not working for a month now. Not a single time. So its hardware believe me.
I will give it to warranty when possible.
Yours apparently is software issue, or even hardware but not that serious.
I spoke with samsung and was told it is a known issue that they can deal with under warranty. Fortunately mine presented quick enough that I'm getting a replacement from EE.
I had the same issue of sporadically not working. Replaced the phone (warranty). Have the exact same issue on the new phone. Guess I'll exchange yet again. Very frustrating.
I have a very weird issue with my HTC U11 plus:
When the screen is off (the device is asleep, not turned off), pressing the power button or using the fingerprint sensor turns it on, but there is a random delay, between 5 and 20 seconds, where the screen stays blank.
Additionaly, the Edge Sense is absolutely unreliable: there is again a delay of between 5 seconds and 35 seconds.
It has started doing that last week.
I tried factory resetting it today, but I get the same result. I have opened a ticket at HTC, but as it is out of warranty, I don't think they'll be able to help me...
Has anyone ever seen such an issue?
Did you solve this?
I have this problem too and my camera also have delay when i open.
I tried flash the stock RUU,but it's no use.?
No, unfortunately not. HTC support said they could repair it but as it was out of warranty they gave me a quote for several part replacement they might have to do, and it cost the price of a new handset (500 euros for a motherboard replacement) so in the end I went with a new handset
It's so unfortunately.?
I have the exact same issue and from the last weekish or so, and no luck fixing it or finding out what is causing it. Also tried factory reset, safe mode doesn't help. Randomly its ok at times but typically 5 seconds to wake from sleep mode. Ive done no system updates. And yes camera is affected, almost feels like CPU tied up doing something.
running android 9
software 2.20.709.2
kernel 4.4.153
It must be an APP issue causing this, does someone have the issue on a rooted device to see what's using the CPU. Once its out of sleep mode for a bit its all ok and runs normal.
---------- Post added at 02:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:11 PM ----------
Hi edzilla,
Did you try another ROM, or does anyone with the HTC u11+ not have this issue and if so what ROM/stock version are you on?
I believe I was on the latest update when it happened, and that that there wasn't any update before it started happening.
ill try rooting/aftermarket rom later to confirm if its hardware.
i downgraded back to android 8 RUU and the issue is still there. i have not tried non stock rom yet but this seems like a hardware issue with the screen or CPU once its in full sleep mode. is anyone running a decent alternative rom i can try?
Anybody found a solution? Like with a different ROM? Or confirmed it is hardware?
I have the same. Came out of the blue. First it was draining the battery. That has stopped now. But since a couple weeks, huge delay when starting. Up to 25sec.
Thought it was an app. So did a hard reset, wiped everything. But even without any apps installed, still the same delay when starting from standby.
Android 9
software 2.19.401.2
kernel 4.4.153
Is it worth putting a different ROM? Don't want to waste a weekend...
So maybe better directly getting a new phone? Any thoughts?
Thank you!

Thanks a lot for letting me know.
Every time I unlock my screen, whether it's with the fingerprint or pattern, the screen will flicker for half a second. Super annoying because it's a bright white flash.
It's not face unlock assistive lighting, as I've ensured that is turned off.
I've also tried every display setting possible, toggling things like vision comfort, comfort tone, refresh rates, display calibrations, changing wallpaper, and so on.
Really hoping this isn't a hardware issue because I'm also noticing my touches don't register all the time, unless I'm pressing the screen slightly harder. Not sure if it's my screen protector but I am left a bit concerned.
Any ideas? I've Googled this a bit and I've noticed others have the same issue but on OnePlus 6 devices for the most part, not the 9 series. If anyone has run into this before and knows a fix, I'd love to hear it, thanks!
That's how the fingerprint works. It increases the screen brightness to the max usually. It's the flaw of using that kind of fingerprint rather than sonic like Samsung. Believe it takes a picture of your fingerprint and compares vs ultrasonic gets a 3D image, the difference is in speed too, optical is faster, but ultrasonic technically more secure and does not rely on lightning conditions. I personally prefer the hardware on the back kind over both.

I don't remember it being this prominent on my previous OnePlus devices, though. My 8 Pro did not flicker as aggressively as this one does. It's enough for me to clearly notice it, even in brighter areas; this is why I've been left with a bit more concern than usual.
Not to mention this occurs even if I use my pattern to unlock.
Not sure. Mine does the same but doesn't bother me in the least bit. If it happened at other times other than unlock would be different story.

Any chance you could try and make a video of it happening on your device? I just want to see if it's the same thing as mine. That way, I'll have a better idea of this being a defect or normal behaviour.
I know, it's kind a big ask so no rush! If you ever have time. I can do the same if anyone needs to see what I am talking about exactly.
Update:
I've noticed the issue occurs only if the lock screen is showing. If ambient display is on and the fingerprint icon shows at the bottom then the device will unlock without flickering. The fact that it's happening only when the screen is on at the lock screen, is what's making me feel like maybe it's not a hardware problem. Very odd issue...
Another update,
After doing more Googling I came to the conclusion that it's a hardware issue over software. I tried to factory reset and the issue was still present.
I couldn't update the software on the phone though. It kept telling me that there was an installation problem. I'm guessing that's because I had previously used a rooted EU boot img and a factory reset through the phone settings isn't enough to get rid of that. I'm hoping the repair center won't fault me for sending the device back with an unlocked bootloader. Doesn't seem like OnePlus would do that anyway, given how open they are with the modding community.
Once I receive the replacement of test to see if the issue was still there and will update this thread.

One time I sent them bricked device and they still accepted the return. Returning unlocked bootloader phone shouldn't be a problem.
What made you think it was hardware since I see other people have the same thing. Hell I had it too. I don't seem to have that problem after updating to latest firmware. Seems to be software to me.
Hope it gets fixed. I saw a thread for it on OnePlus community forum, so hopefully OnePlus knows.

Thinking it's hardware because my 8 Pro doesn't literally cause a white flash of the entire screen, it would just up the brightness which is normal.
And I was also noticing my touches only registered on more firm presses. Made me think it could have been a bad display panel.
Didn't want to take any chances especially while inside the 15 day return/replacement window.

+1 on the 9Pro
According to the OnePlus support section of the site, the progress shows as "Inspected". I assume the next step is shipping out a replacement. Hopefully it's soon, will post an update on the new unit.
Thanks for letting me know you guys aren't experiencing the issue, makes me feel good about my decision of sending it back. Almost didn't do it because I didn't want to come back to this Pixel 5 after being spoiled by that 9's screen size lol.
Got the replacement today, after some testing it seems like this unit has no issues! There is a clear difference between this one and my original. There was a blinding white flash even when using my pattern to unlock. Same thing when double tapping the lock screen to put the device to sleep.
This has no white flashes so definitely seems like a hardware issue. Finally, I can start enjoying this thing!

How bro it can be a hardware issue.. it's only happens on low brightness when you unlock the phone right?I am also facing the same issue but it is not there where I unboxed the phone and used it for 1day after receiving update to os 11.2.7.7only this problem starts to me..so how can it be a hardware issue

No it happened on any brightness. It was just more noticeable in low brightness and reading through the same issue on OP forums, others were confirming it is hardware related as a complete factory reset isn't able to resolve the issue. If it was software related, a complete restore would have/should have fixed it. Your issue might be different from what I was experiencing.
My Pixel 7 Pro has started to randomly shut down every so often. Completely out of the blue, the screen will just go black and I need to long-press the power button to turn it back on. This started happening a couple of days ago. No idea why.
I don't know if there's any correlation, but this started happening after the December update.
Is anyone else seeing this, too? Any thoughts on what could cause this and how to remedy it?
Thanks!

Have you backed up to Google one and done by a reset?
A reset might solve your problem?
I've read on GitHub that it's an issue with the 5g hand over to LTE on the T-Mobile network.. I had the same issue until I switch to use LTE and it's not shut off since. Hopefully Google is aware and it gets fixed

This happened to me this morning. American Verizon service with December update installed.
Happening to me even on custom ROM. I'm really wondering if this is an actual hardware issue rather instead of the OS issue.

The december beta had this problem so it might apply to the stable one as well, I suggest you update to the stable january build.

If they're based on the december build it might be due to the kernel (the december build had some issues), since I updated to the january build I did not have any other random reboot.

I tried updating to TQ1A.230105.002 today which I think is the latest stable Jan build..? And just got the random shutdown again.

I'd suggest to do a full factory reset while flashing all partitions, that's what I did and I don't have this issue anymore, otherwise it could very well be a hardware issue, but doing a full wipe is worth a try.

I did do a full factory reset before flashing.. I was surprised to still have the shutdown issue as well since it must be a hardware issue then.. but it's so weird that a hardware issue would just randomly surface without dropping the device or anything at all..? Or could it be that the January Stable Build still has the software issue? I'll reach out to Support tomorrow.. for now I'm going to try putting it in my pocket with the screen facing up and not towards my leg and seeing if that makes a difference.
I didn't have this issue, i updated to the January patch and everything was ok, now today my phone started to shutting down tl not sure what is going on
I have the same problem since yesterday. Every time I block the phone and put it in my pocket, the next time I get it it's turned off. I'm sure the pocket isn't pressing any button, but it keeps powering off. I bought it on launch day and I had 0 problems with it until now.
EDIT: Updated applications since yesterday (22 of January): Google, IFTTT and my bank application.
EDIT2: I've just tested to use it on Safe Mode, and I got the same behaviour. I suspect it must be some screen or screen sensor problem... of maybe It has something to do with the fingerprint sensor.
EDIT3: After triple-checking (my phone was in the December update) it finally has updated to the January one. I'll update with more feedback after update.
I changed to only LTE and for some time it was not shutting down. Since pixel pro doesn't have a cache partition like others phones i opened the "files app from Google" and i cleaned the junk files , i rebooted the phone and since then i have no issues at all. Maybe is a coincidence but it's working for some days without shutting down

I had the same issue on the december beta, after wiping the device fully and flashing the january stable this issue disappeared; some users also reported this on GrapheneOS on previous Pixels so I just think it's a bug that went unnoticed.
I started having this issue after the February 5th Update. After reading through this thread it got me into thinking. I couldn't reproduce the issue into safe mode, I uninstalled new 3rd party apps and that didn't fix it. However, disabling the flip to shhh setting did! So disabling the sensor for when your phone is placed upside down to silence the phone seems to have resolved the problem for me. Let me know if this fixes it for others.
So same problem here, random shut downs while in my pocket, long press to power up, temperature check and no over heating. After a couple of chat sessions with FI support which were worthless, finally spoke to Google support and they seemed to be convinced that there is a problem, I think they know. They agreed to a replacement and awaiting a new phone from Google, we shall see.
