Changing between ROMs without loosing Data - General Questions and Answers

Hello, i am currently on LineageOS 14(Android 7.1.2) with my Redmi Note 4 (mido).
I want to try some Oreo Custom ROMs and kernels. I am looking for stable lightweight ROM with minimum features, with good SoT, Camera and performance.I dont play any games. I am using my phone for social media apps and Youtube. Do you have any suggestion which ROM or kernel i should definitely try?
Is there possibility, to change between ROMs without losing my data and installed apps? Is it safe to do backup with Titanium and restore all of my apps? Or should i do fresh install and download all apps again everytime i change ROM? Is it safe to change kernel on same ROM? I mean, can i i be on on the same ROM and just change kernel without losing all of my installed apps?
I am sorry for bad english.
Thank you

For pieces of advice on ROM or Kernel , you'll be better asking here :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4/help
You can change your kernel while running the same ROM safely ( once you flash the good kernel ). You won't lose data when you're changing the kernel btw.
And I advice a fresh installation when you're switching ROM , that might avoid you bugs .

[POLL] Stock with Xposed vs custom ROM

I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules. I was just wondering what everyone else prefers on their Note 3... Stock ROM with Xposed, or a custom ROM?
I have been using Slimkat on my Note 3 since I bought it. This week I might try out the stock ROM with Xposed to compare.

I prefer Stock ROM with Xposed.
I understand why others love custom ROM but I don't need it

yes also
Same here, mostly running alexandr's ROM with lean kernel. Works wonders. But I can't understand why people buy this phone and flash aosp roms that turn the spen into a simple stick.
one of android best features to me ... is having a custom rom
but lately they all feel like stock with exposed enabled .... im still searching for a good rom to use everyday
rooted X-Note 3 knox 0X0
Stock rom with xpose especially Wanamp:good:
Tested lots of ROMs, if not all, that are available for the Nope 3. AOSP, TW based...
Best look, performance & speed - AOSP cannot be beaten here. And even if some FCs happened until I setup an AOSP, after that there's no hiccups, even on nightlies. Fire up ART runtime, and the speed gets to disgusting levels, but it's like a car, the faster you go, the more likely the crash.
Pure stock TW is ugly as hell, but coming from Samsung themselves, it's stable and everything works. And there ARE people who use the S-Pen every day. o.o
Also, it's probably the fact that I can't properly set up the kernel on AOSP, because the ugly slow TW gets me more battery life than AOSP. And I go tinkering with the kernel, and USB stops working, FCs, and other s**t. :/ I need to learn more on the topic, probably...
Currently, using Audax ROM with stock kernel.
make my own custom since i don't really use some of the function avail on other custom.
i vote for custom rom
when i am in stock note 3 the ported s5 apps doesnt work thats why i chose s5 ported roms as the note 3 dont get s5 apps or even the s5 uI samsung fault they dont care about there fans new phone produce throw your phone away cause you well get worse update - as i know 4.3 was better than 4.4.2 / 1-call record working without root - 2- camera performance better - 3- white keyboard - 4-not draining battery fast and ... a lot of things i may forget it dont forget the last update which introduce knox 2.0 which make towel-root useless - so tell me reasons not be in custom rom or you just stock with useless phone / i just losing faith with samsung update cause i know every update are getting even worse
I like using stock-based custom ROM with Xposed.

Thank you for the subject.
Personally, I prefer Stock because it's official and custom rom does not give you a big advantage over the original with Xposed, except with the custom I can not activate screen mirroring.

[HELP] To root or not to root

Hello,
I am using Nexus 5 on stock Android 6.0 Marshmallow (MRA58N).
I read that Xposed framework is finally working on 6.0 (as well as GravityBox).
So I decided to give a try, but I realized that I need to root my device first. Then I started reading about custom kernels. Then I started looking through all the great custom ROMs that are availble at XDA....
Which option is the best for now for Nexus 5? Are those custom ROMs really that good compared to stock 6.0?
So I can't make my mind, what should I do?
1. Stay on stock (bo-o-o-o-o-oring)
2. Root and install Xposed
3. Get a custom ROM
What I want - more customization, 100% stability, good performance, good battery.
Can you guys give me some advice?
P.S.: I have a lot of experience with custom ROMs, I installed a lot of that on my HTC Desire and even installed Android on my HTC Touch Cruise (that came with Windows Mobile). On my Nexus 5 I tried MIUI and I loved it, but every time I still comeback to the stock Android.
1 or 2 or a few layers roms like Chroma I guess (I didn't tried). CM based roms aren't stable enough for now.
Xposed and Gravitybox are at early stage so if you need 100% stability, stay on full stock.

Nope but you can feel it by using custom apps like Amplify.
Custom roms and kernels don't really help for battery life. FYI http://elementalx.org/the-truth-about-kernels-and-battery-life/

Slow device. Which custom rom install?

Hi
I have a nexus 5 all original, stock rom, the way I bought it.
But the same is very slow, I would be willing to install a custom rom...
There are several types ... CYANOGEM CAF / AOSP, Revolution remix, fake rom, and others ...
What is a good and stable rom? How do I install this? Thank you very much.
Pure Nexus + blu_spark kernel is a great combo for battery life.
Dark ROM is also pretty good along with NitrogenOS.
Dirty Unicorns. Find them on Google+
The phone may just need a factory reset to speed things up.

Why Copy and Paste?

Most of the rom found here are just copy and paste with small edit.
In the lineage os based roms all roms are same including same bugs, only the theme is newly installed and new name is given to the rom, who needs it? just to chill the developer heart rom is downloaded that's all. Developers stop wasting your precious time in creating junk rom.
Stop creating junk Rom and Create a proper official or unofficial lineage os rom without bug and making fp gestures and ultra power save key customisable.
Finally
Developers create only
1--------lineage os Rom
2-------Paranoid android rom
3-------Aosp rom
4-------ressurection remix Rom (los based)
5-------AEX Rom (aosp based)
We just need a Stable Rom, and not a rom with full of bugs, if we want themes we will try subtratum, and create our own theme with ThemeDIY.
Better luck !! Any mistake let me know it in comment section.

Lineage os based roms are all same including same bugs
Yes they are but all roms have extra/different added features than los,, and have different stability, smoothness, battery backup etc
Just to chill dev rom is downloaded wtf u talking about???u even know whats an custom rom is?
You think fixing fp gestures etc is easy??then why not fix it yourself than demanding for an fix..even dev have their own life..if u want an stable rom build it yourself,,they dont get payed and there and many roms than what u have mentioned..peace

Haha how much extra hour battery life you get?
What different feature? WhAt's new?
Most of android 7.x is same as another 7.x nothing is new, it's just a copy and paste.only user interface is different because of theme that's all. Developers Better don't waste your precious time in copy and paste.
Every rom has its own pros and cons, but for creating new rom based on something the existing Rom with bug can be solved.
I started creating a custom rom myself.
WE DON'T WANT REPLACEMENT ROM, ALL WE WANT IS RELIABLE ROM OR NOTHING. ✌✌✌
Its so much true in your statement. But you must remember, don`t like it = don`t use it. It`s xda, the biggest android community in Internet, everybody can share their work here (of course if its not against rules). Your right is to use only what you like to use. Of course its better to have only few, but rock solid roms, than 100 buggy crappy sh**... But do you think this thread could change anything? Good luck, finger crossed, but unfortunately I think that this place will be quite hot battleground. Regards

All roms are built on same sources so they have all same bugs,,,and talking about what different features, ever used roms other than los???and what theme u are talking about??rr has better customisation, aex has better smoothness, each roms are better in their own way
U started creating a custom rom yourself??y dont u build an stable oreo rom for us??devlopers wont have to waste their precious time if u build one for us?
'every rom has its own pros and cons'???just 2min ago u told that all roms are same with same bugs and only new name is given.
By the way if u want fp gestures, one key then y just use stock rom??

What ROM instead SuperMan ROM

Because the best for me was SuperMan ROM is End of Life I want change for ROM what have actualizations.
I Don't want ROM based on Lineage OS - I dont like this ROMs
I looking ROM based on stock ROM. I don't need much futures and configuration
I looking Rom what have bookmark/additional screen with UpDay app, where I can change top bar (side of the clock, what is in top bar etc.), fingerprint unlock after boot.
Is now ROM what can instead SuperMan ROM?
What ROM You recommend?

I've also used SuperMan-ROM, SuperMan-ROM was a rom with a lot customizations and tweaks that you could set to your own wishes. I don't think there is a rom available at this moment that provides the same customizations and tweakers that is not EOL.
At this moment I've installed LightRom. I've used it for 2 days now, runs great and haven't had any problems so far. I do miss some tweaks/customizations that were available on the SuperMan-ROM, but maybe that is just a matter of getting used to the new rom.
I've also tried LineageOS, but didn't liked it due to some bugs with calling in general and bluetooth music/calling.
The rom The Galaxy Project looks promising, but haven't had the change to try it out.
There are some more roms available but I didn't check them out yet, so I can not say anything about them. You can see a rom list for the Galaxy S7 here: Rom List

HI! Great post question, I am asking the same question. I WAS using Superman ROM and LOVED IT! but then EOL came out and security patches were OLD and scared me. My main use no with S7 is protecting it and prolonging its life span. So which ROM is best for:
1. De-bloated - enough of jam packing crap into a phone ppl dont need or want and not giving them a way to delete it for good!
2. Updated security patches
3. Maximum Performance
Is it possible to STILL use Superman ROM final edition and flash security patches?
Samsung has stopped the monthly security updates, so only quarterly security patches will be available. Also Samsung is not releasing Android 9 for the Galaxy S7.
For this, some developers are working on Note FE ports. The Note FE ported roms are based on Android 9 and do get their monthly security patches.
At this moment these Note FE ports are very populair: (keep in mind that there are more roms available and probably new ones will come)
NoteFE port - BlackDiamond
NoteFE port - LightRom
Always read the first post and see if you like the rom based of the description.
I think that LightRom is the most debloated rom. I've used LightRom before, it was a decent rom, but it felt like debloating meant replacing Samsung apps with Google apps. It was more battery efficient than the Samsung Stock ROM, but not by a alot.
I don't know which rom has more performance.
I'm going to try the BlackDiamond rom, it looks very promising. But in the end it is always personal preference, you should read the first post of a rom and see if you like it. If you do, you can test it and see if you really like it.
Superman ROM is End Of Life, so it doesn't get updated anymore. You can not flash security patches separately. If you want SupermanRom with the latest security patches, then you'll have to do all the merging/programming work yourself. Also one last thing, you ask for maximum performance, but Superman-ROM isn't maximum performance at all. It's only just a little debloated, basically removed some apps that can be downloaded from app store again. And it also has RomControl, which makes a rom customizable but slower and less battery efficient.
