Anyone else have issues with call audio quality? - Vivo Nex Questions & Answers

Ok, so I've noticed something a little weird with my Nex (int. version).
When making or receiving calls, on either of my SIMs, there's like a sort of thudding noise, almost like something is knocking the screen. It's pretty quiet but noticeable enough during calls.
Through trial and error, I've discovered it seems to be volume related, almost like an audio clipping issue.
My first thought was that it was a hardware issue with the earpiece, especially as calls made on the loudspeaker are fine. But I discovered you can listen back to call recordings on the earpiece and when I do that, the noises are gone. So that pretty much rules out a hardware issue.
The next thing that crossed my mind was that it might be signal related, however the issues aren't present on the call recordings full stop, which pretty much rules that out too, as any audio imperfections caused by the signal would have to be present in the recording as well.
So I'm stumped, it only seems to happen within calls themselves. There's no obvious cause, either hardware or signal, so I'm wondering if it's software-related but I can't see how.
Has anyone else had any similar issues?

Yh I've been experiancing the exact same issue on my int version also. Its related to the volume like you said but it would be interesting to know if the chinese version has the issue or not.

I have the Chinese version. I'm not experiencing audio clipping. No thumps. No problem.

Any other with same problem here ?

i am facing same issue, but sometimes who calls me or i call someone they are listening Echo sound.

Anyone managed to solve this issue? I got my phone 3 days ago and this issue appears in most of my calls. Interestingly, it seems to work perfectly fine while I'm on the line and wait for the person to pick up.

I got same issue. How to solve this?

I think the phone is using the speakerphone microphone

I have searched high and low and if I missed the answer to this, you guys can feel free to flame away.
I frequently get the complaint that it sounds like I am in a club or something on my end during a call. After a little experimenting, I believe the phone is using the speakerphone mic during a regular call and I have no idea why. I can move the phone as far away as I can reach and the person on the other end says the volume of my voice doesnt change. It doesnt always do it but when it does, it seems to require a reset to stop it. Speakerphone isnt turned on and I am still hearing through the earpiece so I cant understand how in the world the phone wouldnt be utilizing the mouthpiece.
It did this with the stock ATT ROM and does it with NATF v4.4 too.
Is this a known issue? Is there a fix? Should I swap my phone? Thanks for the help guys.
im 99% sure there is no such thing as a speakerphone mic
If there is no speakerphone mic then how does the phone pick up sounds so differently during speakerphone mode? Ultimately, even if there isnt a dedicated mic for speakerphone, the phone is apparently utilizing the "speakerphone method" of picking up sound from my end so i guess consider my question rephrased.
How does using a headset effect the transmitted sound? Perhaps the built in mic is defective.
It seems stupid but I havent actually thought to try that yet. The next time it does this, which will probably be sometime today, I will give it a shot and see how it reacts.
I mean, does anyone know for sure if the speakerphone utilizes the mouthpiece as it's mic? The mic is clearly treated differently during a speakerphone call but I dont know for sure by what method.
This is a very frustrating issue.
Could this have something to do with the setting (in system tab) 'Microphone AGC'? ..I know it says it effects the microphone during recording, but could be worth a shot..
I just checked that setting and it is disabled so I guess AGC isnt the culprit.
I could have sworn I read about this happening somewhere else on these forums but I couldnt find it for the of me.

Poor call quality on receiving end?

I've had this phone for a week now and I've had more than a couple people tell me my phone sounded terrible. Everything sounds fine on my end...I think it's mostly when I'm using speaker phone but I've had people complain even when on the headset with full reception. I'm on T-mobile if it makes a difference...
Has anyone else ran into similar complaints from people on the other end of phone calls?
edit: seems like i'm not the only one with this problem...and as i suspected it looks like it has to do with the stupid noise cancelling making the calls too quiet/muffled. This is exactly what people are complaining about when I call...see this thread

is every nexus 5 having this issue?

Microphone issue on the Nexus 5

Hello, so, I've seen a lot of people complaining about microphone noise but that's not my problem.
The Problem:
Sometimes when people call me they say they can't hear me, or hear me like I'm meters away from the phone, other times it's fine. Tried recording with the camera and with sound recording apps from the play store and they all record the sound perfectly on both mics.
The Debugging
Seeing this seemed to be happen randomly on the calls but I couldn't reproduce it anywhere else I decided to start digging the root of this problem.
I searched the web and got this thread on Google Forums: http://productforums.google.com/d/topic/nexus/JZGA5p-VX1A/discussion where they mention recording with Google Keep, so I did a comparison betwen a recording with ASR (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nll.asr) and Google Keep, here:
ASR: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13954549/ASRbgnoise.ogg
Keep: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13954549/Keepbgnoise.3gp
As you can see (hear), the problem doesn't seem to be hardware related, as the recording with ASR sounds perfect, even when I recorded with noise cancellation on, off and using the camera mic, with background noise, but I can barely hear the Google Keep recording, it sounds like I'm meters away from the phone.
The problem seems to affect about 1/4th of my calls and with Google Keep it seems that it's always there, atleast on all my recordings, I think it might be a software bug on the noise cancellation, what do you guys think? I think that if it was hardware problem it would happen with all apps?
Any help you guys could give me on how to further debug and/or fix this would be very welcome.
any help would be appreciated
Having same problem with mine

Same issue here. Waiting for an update. I'll RMA if that doesn't do anything.
thank you for your feedback, I updated the OP to make it easier to read.
Atleast I'm not the only one with this problem...
I'm a programmer and I know a bit of android but I only have the general idea how the noise cancellation works, I don't really know the details, so if a dev could help me debug or fix it would be great.
shameless self bump
I had the same issue, only the mic was basically useless on every single call, unless you used speakerphone.
I was going to RMA, but decided to flash
Cataclysm before I did. Surprisingly, this corrected the issue completely! Not sure what the rom changed, but I'm not complaining!!

well that ROM seems to have a non-stock dialer, may have something to do with the dialer app?
Oh crap, I thought I was the only one! I'm having the same problem, but it's so random!
Just wanted to say I'm having this issue too. I noticed it gets worse if I point the microphone directly away from me while on a call. I think there's some interference with the noise cancelling microphone at the top of the phone.
Me too *bump*

thx for your feedback. I'm still trying to figure out how to further pinpoint this bug, I need help from some dev...
I too have experienced this but only while the phone was charging.. weird.
I'm also having this problem...it seems to work about 50% of the time...I thought it was a signal strength issue.
I also have the same problem that will surely be a software bug and that has to do with the microphone from the top! while there is no solution for it, I glued some black adhesive tape to cover the microphone hole in the top, and it seems that resulted ... nobody complains hear me far away ...
Hi same issue
Since someone said the Cataclysm ROM fixed that bug i've contacted the ROM dev to see if he has any idea what could be that fixed it so i can pinpoint what is wrong
daily bump
Just posting that I too have this problem. Usually happens when calls first connect. I have to say "hello" 2 or sometimes 3-4 times before the other person can finally hear me. It's annoying listening to my girlfriend say "ugh what's wrong with your new phone? See you should have gotten an iPhone" LOL.
I posted about this in another thread. I have the same issue.
If you haven't tried already, record a video in a quiet environment on your phone. You can hear a hissing noise and any time you talk it sounds kind of staticy.

huge problem with audio output

hi guys i've tried to search the forum but haven't found anything...
since yesterday my phone has started to reproduce audio/sounds in a strange way; they are metallic/scratched like. the problem is for system sounds and for anything reproduced (youtube/spotify/...)
when I make phone calls i can hear correctly.
anyone has ever heard about this kind of problem?
the phone is fully stock and has been bought in august...
thanks for helping
Do you solve it?
I have the same problem, sometimes the audio sound scratched, in little parts ,unintelligible sometimes I solve with the putting 3/4 times the audio jack usbC sometimes restarting, and sometimes repair by it self. I don't understand how this happen and how to solve it. Restarting /formating resolve partially, and the problem appear again.
Hi,
I faced similar issue too. But as a different an addition, my phone has same noise on voice calls too. The noise on phone calls disappear when I used earphone instead ear speaker.
The metalic noise is starts when I touch an icon on the screen in order to start an application. It's vanish when the application starts properly.
Is there anyone faced this issue too?

in my case not work headphones. After i change Miui and install Kali linux and back my headphones dosnt work with any headphones.
Finally I noticed by accident (in my case) the problem solve when I push not so hard the upper left corner, and this solution fix instantly the audio issue, and last many months until I put the smartphone in stretchy jeans pockets. That mean maybe it’s bending and moving inside parts or maybe the previous user of my phone dropped (cause i buyed used) or I dropped (I don’t remember phone hard drops) . In this time I don’t want spent money fixing this, so I still using fixing in this way. I love this phone
I have exactly the same problem. I already tried to out a replacement speaker in the Mi Mix 2s but that didn't solve the issue. The problem comes from another component. Have you figured out which component this causes?
My root cause is also unknown but might be that the phone dropped.

What I tried so far.
1. Set phone to factory settings
2. Installed different ROM (Lineage OS 17.1)
3. Replacement speaker.
None of this helped. What I'm wondering is, that everything else works fine. Only sound output is distorted.
Can you help me with that?
can some one help me with a xiaomi mix 2s audio problem audio doesnt work and even with bluetooth devices im not sure if its a software problem
or a hardware

Question S22 Ultra Echo during phone calls

I am on T-mobile USA and had no such issues on S21, but people that call me complain that hear their own echo. I do use speakerphone on S22 quite often so not sure if this only happens with/without speakerphone during calls. Also, I get no issues on my end, it is always the people on other side that call me. I am in great coverage area and have WiFi calling off.
Anyone with such issues? Hopefully it is not a hardware issue...
EDIT: After extensive testing and trying in "safe mode" I have concluded that the microphone has hardware defect. When I made some test calls with Speakerphone enabled, I get "hiss, static, crackle, white noise" and garbled audio on the other end.
Can't say I have had that issue. I'm on Tmobile USA as well and with Wifi Calling and without it I have no had any complains about call quality..
Will try the speaker call and see

echo is when somebody is listening (tapped) your conversation
I've had it happen once or twice before. One thing you can do is run a diagnostic on the microphone and see if that tells you more.

Sucks that I will have to send it in for a repair as Samsung US does not have option to replace a defective/DOA device even within 14 days of delivery.
I am not surprised at getting a DOA phone though as COVID-19 and supply chain issues is probably affecting QA and manufacturing standards.
That sucks man, I hope you get that fixed soon!
I have had that happen on wifi calling... When my wifi connection isn't so good.
Happening on a Rogers S22 Ultra. I've had it go away when I rebooted the phone previously, but today everyone who called me or who I called had speakerphone echo. One test in safe mode showed that it was gone but it's inconclusive. Samsung has terrible speakerphones for years, how can they not get this basic phone functionality right. I upgrade twice a year for better battery and hoping for better speakerphone.
Hope there's a fix soon.. how do you do a hardware test? I don't have wifi on

Did you get the repairs completed successfully and your phone back?
A reboot will fix it but the WIFI calling echo returns right after you complete a video call. Does not matter what video calling app you use. Could be Duo, WhatsApp, etc... Try it and you will see. I wish there was a fix for this.
Problem finally solved. Turn off the Samsung video call effects and reboot. The WIFI echo calling problem will be gone never to return!!
