I've had this phone for a week now and I've had more than a couple people tell me my phone sounded terrible. Everything sounds fine on my end...I think it's mostly when I'm using speaker phone but I've had people complain even when on the headset with full reception. I'm on T-mobile if it makes a difference...
Has anyone else ran into similar complaints from people on the other end of phone calls?
edit: seems like i'm not the only one with this problem...and as i suspected it looks like it has to do with the stupid noise cancelling making the calls too quiet/muffled. This is exactly what people are complaining about when I call...see this thread

is every nexus 5 having this issue?

Anyone else experiencing this in Qik? Tried over wifi and 3G, downloaded all updates. The volume is very low. Does this happen to anyone else?
OMG yes! I thought I was the only one? It's too damn hard to hear who I'm talking to. The person even asked me why I would bring the phone up to my ear every time he spoke. I hope an update can fix this.
I experienced the same thing using Tango. Tried doing a test chat with my friend on his iphone. He kept asking me to repeat myself and said the volume was low. I could hear him fine.
So, just to see, I tried it with the headphones and mic... MUCH better, he could hear me fine.
At first I thought it was the case maybe getting in the way, but taking it off didn't help at all.
Not sure what to make of it... hopefully, it is just some software problem and nothing major.
This is my first post BTW... After leaving the iphone a couple of months ago I have tried 3 Samsung Captivates (Galaxy S), 2 G2's, and 2 MT4G's... I think I finally got a keeper. This thing is redonkulous!

same - tried over data and wifi. However... girlfriend used headphones and no headphones, and iphone head phones... could barely hear here. it would cut in and out sometimes too... she couldn't hear me half the time either... helllppppp this is why we bought this stupid phone!
i had the same problem today, i hope it's just a matter of an update, other than that this phone is awesome! i can't believe i got a MyTouch after having a g1, i thought i'd be a loyal vanilla user but this phone was too sweet to pass up
lol @2071. Yea I'm about to get it Tomorrow coming from a g1. I wish this was vanilla, or i can at least root
Double check that your call is going through the speakerphone. Is it possible that the video call audio is defaulting to the earpiece? I wonder because if it sounds normal using headphones then there's probably nothing wrong. Just a guess.
The other side they can hear me perfectly. Its just my ability to hear them. During the call, if I push the volume keys, the volume meter comes up on the phone as "media volume." Also, if I make a regular non-video call and put it on speaker, the speaker is LOUD. So its just confined to video calls..... Also, other media (music) is LOUD.
Ya I have also tried Tango and its the same low volume on The network or my wifi. I haven't tried headphones yet though.
from Snugs hTc ViSiON
I can confirm low volume as well. Seems to work way better with headphones in for both sides.

Alright, well make sure you all call in to tmo tech support so this becomes a known issue quickly!
im not experiencing low volume... what i am experiencing is when talking to my friend, I had to switch the mic on and off each time I wanted to talk and hear him.. kinda like a 2 way radio
While in a call I can hear a noise like a buzzing what is it? I notice if my speakers and any thing electronic is next to it makes the same buzzing noise for instance if my phone is next to it.
I'm not exactly sure why they do it, but all GSM phones do this when the radio starts going nuts, like getting a call etc.
Sprint and Verizon not so much.
It's normal though. So expect it to happen all the time.
so annoying lol
There are better quality speakers available which have shielding preventing such interference/feedback. There isn't really any way to tell though unless you've already bought them (which doesn't help).
I'm lucky my logitech Z10 speakers have never exhibited such problems.

well thanks that would help my speaker problem. Not the phone though
Well every phone will do it, so it's not really a "phone problem". It comes with the technology. But getting shielded speakers will at least remove the "annoying" aspect.
It sounds like you're saying that you hear the noise coming out of the phone's own speakers? That's not normal, even on a GSM phone.
The clicking/buzzing on other speakers, like your clockradio or whatever are normal, but if the phone itself is acting up, it's defective, or you have it near something that's causing a lot of interference.
Hi Guys -
Black Nexus 5. It has been great in everything except placing and receiving calls. I don't use a headset just the phone directly. But whenever I call someone, people tell me that they can barely hear me. To fix that I literally have to move my mouth right next to the microphone and even then the voice is barely ok. I almost have to shout. People tell me that I sounded much louder on my own phone.
Also while hearing people on the phone the voice is too low. I use the volume control app and have the IN CALL volume on FULL. 5/5. Still I barely hear the other person and if it's noisy outside I cannot. Contrast to my previous phone in which I had to go down to 50% volume otherwise it was too loud.
Is this a defective unit? A hardware issue? Do I need to ask Google for replacement? I am loath to do that since the phone has been amazing in everything else. It's fast as hell and the battery life is super.
I wanted to know if any one has the same problem and whether it might be fixed with a software update or is it just a hardware issue and something wrong with my phone?
Thanks in advance.
Idem for me !
Hi,
I've the same problem with my Nexus 5. I think that it's a software problem because, when I put the speaker on, the problem is resolved. I think that it's due to 2 microphones and noise cancelation... Our voice is canceled ! I hope that Google is awared of that problem and will delivered a fix quickely. Specially that there is another problem with speaker that sometimes sizzles a lot ! I think that i'm going to buy a headset in the meantime. That's really a shame : a new phone that we cannot use to phone ! Even if yes for the other thinks Nexus 5 is great.
Are they other people that are the same problem ? How can we open a case in Google ? How they know that there is really something to fix ?
Thanks,

Did you ask for an RMA? If so, what is the status?
I have the same issue and google has promised an RMA.
Its quite a pain not to have a phone for a week.

I don't think a replacement will help.
There are several other threads already
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2518840
exactly the same here... already some news what to do?
This issue seems to have become worse with the 4.2.2 update. The in-call volume is very very low. It's impossible for me to hear other people unless I am in a quiet room (the volume is maxed out). I recall with the stock 4.4.0 - the call volume was not that low.
For whatever reason, using a headset everything is fine. So for phone calls, Nexus 5 is only usable if I use a headset. It's impossible with the earpiece.
Anyone else having a problem with low in call volume? I'm wondering whether it's my specific phone. Everything else is perfect, and the battery life is insanely good. Wondering whether I should RMA.
I too am having this problem. It wasn't like this before the update but outside I can barely hear the other side. I don't make a lot of calls tbh but I remember shortly after I bought it making a call to another N5 and thinking how great it sounded.
Now it's hard to use.
I am having the same issue some days back. They Have replaced with new one..No issues so far..

Hi - did you do anything. I am wondering whether RMA helps in such a case.
I haven't done anything with mine yet I was hoping to compare it to a friends N5 first.
I might try and contact Google.

Hello,
Got my missus an S7 couple weeks back. I have noticed when we are on call with each other if she has the phone turned on loudspeaker I can barely hear her on my phone. Its so bad, can barely hear most calls so jittery.
Didn't expect this from the S7. Any one else noticed this or could check at some point. thanks.

Yes holy cow, me and my girlfriend got the S7 and have the same problem, loudspeaker is practically unuseable, crackling or cutting out and even when it is clear on a rare occasion the other party cant hear us due to cutting out, 4to5 bars on service and never dunked and since its both of our phones its definitly a phone issue, scouring every forum i can find for a solution. All i keep getting though is the stupid 10 common problems with s7 pages. Im so close to returning this pos. If i dont find a solution in the next week im returning and going back to using my nexus.

You can try to install a sound mod, but if it doesn't work then you are just one of the few unlucky who got a defected unit.
No problem here.
My speaker is too loud.
Problem here too
My problem happens when during conversation I turn my Speaker mode, the other side have trouble hearing me as my voice get "cut" - and on normal mode all is good.. any solution?
Ok, so I've noticed something a little weird with my Nex (int. version).
When making or receiving calls, on either of my SIMs, there's like a sort of thudding noise, almost like something is knocking the screen. It's pretty quiet but noticeable enough during calls.
Through trial and error, I've discovered it seems to be volume related, almost like an audio clipping issue.
My first thought was that it was a hardware issue with the earpiece, especially as calls made on the loudspeaker are fine. But I discovered you can listen back to call recordings on the earpiece and when I do that, the noises are gone. So that pretty much rules out a hardware issue.
The next thing that crossed my mind was that it might be signal related, however the issues aren't present on the call recordings full stop, which pretty much rules that out too, as any audio imperfections caused by the signal would have to be present in the recording as well.
So I'm stumped, it only seems to happen within calls themselves. There's no obvious cause, either hardware or signal, so I'm wondering if it's software-related but I can't see how.
Has anyone else had any similar issues?
Yh I've been experiancing the exact same issue on my int version also. Its related to the volume like you said but it would be interesting to know if the chinese version has the issue or not.
I have the Chinese version. I'm not experiencing audio clipping. No thumps. No problem.
Any other with same problem here ?
i am facing same issue, but sometimes who calls me or i call someone they are listening Echo sound.
Anyone managed to solve this issue? I got my phone 3 days ago and this issue appears in most of my calls. Interestingly, it seems to work perfectly fine while I'm on the line and wait for the person to pick up.
I got same issue. How to solve this?
