Is it possible to sideload Samsung stock camera app on Custom ROM? - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Is it possible to sideload Samsung stock camera app on Custom ROM?

Nope. Only roms that are based on the stock Samsung software (which presumably would already have the camera APK). Like pretty much any Samsung app, the camera app requires access to specific APIs which will probably never be in custom roms as Samsung doesn't make them open-source.

It'll be possible after Google releases the source code for Android P as it'll have APIs for multiple camera. Dont know about dual aperture as it seems that the s9 is the only one featuring it!

i mean anything is possible but it wont b a simple sideload lol.. it woukd need to b ported as theres drivers and other dependencies besides the apk
look at gcam ports as a reference.. u cant simply install an apk but its been ported to many devices already

[Q] WiFi Calling with any custom ROM?

I understand AOSP ROMs doesnt have wifi calling feature, which is carrier specific feature baked into the kernel itself.
But, since I live in a deadzone area for T-mobile, this is pretty important and I dont want to miss my Nexus 5 for this reason.
Is there any custom ROM (touchwiz) one which is compatible with Nexus 5? any ports for S4/S5, available for Nexus 5?
I would love to get that ROM as my one of the multiboot option, so that I can switch to that when I am at home to make/receive calls.

Well if it is baked into the kernel, a port wont help. When a ROM is ported to a new target device, it must use the target devices kernel
kernel can be "not-shared" right?!

well, I think with multi-boot kernel doesn't have to be shared right?!
currently i have stock with franco kernel and L-preview with default OS kernel.
Since kernel is software, i believe the port could come with its own kernel which supports the wifi calling feature? am I wrong?!

No idea, but either way, it would be a Nexus Kernel. A Samsung kernel wouldn't boot, even if it didnt brick your device

Kernels aren't ported. ROMs are ported and use device specific kernels. So yes, you are wrong

I am not saying porting the kernel. but in a way it could be implied that (as I am saying ROM coming with its own kernel which is compatible with the device)
I am wondering some kernels are built for both AOKP, AOSP and Touchwiz versions of Androids
see this for example. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297379
I guess its probably because S4 have both google play edition as well as touchwiz edition.
I wish Nexus 5 supports wifi calling as part of its kernel.
Some guys started this intitiative, but doesnt seem it will be reality

anywa, thank you for the reply and correcting me.
I think what you're failing to grasp is that they can use the same kernel because it's the same phone.. Kernels are an interface between the rom and the hardware. You cannot use a kernel from another device on our device as it will brick.. It's not a question of what rom you're using. It's a question of what hardware you're using.
The only way to get a kernel function from another device is to know the source code, but since its proprietary I'm guessing the code isn't available.

no, tmobiles WiFi calling is not possible on a nexus 5, unless tmo makes it compatible with it. its more than just a kernel feature(as we also don't have access to the source, so we can't grab it), it is also framework changes. you can use other WiFi calling apps and services though.
thanks!

got it. I didnt know kernels are device specific 100%. Always used to think its some software which is written to understand any camera, any cpu, any RAM etc. but now i got clarity.
what options are out there for people who are on deadzones, but still want the ability to make calls?
I think i can give my google voice number to all my friends and start receiving calls via hangout (not sure if that is possible yet) without any network.

Do you think that this could help with someone baking it into a custom kernel? My girlfriend just got this phone and thought that it had wifi calling on it. Hopefully this can help!!

it works with tmobiles wifi calling feature, improves it, not alone.

Oxygen OS Port

Since Oxygen is out for Oneplus one is anyone porting this soon to our phone? It has built in DT2W and other gestures
Gestures are done with the kernel, not the ROM.
Porting the ROM as a whole is ultimately pointless - just use any custom ROM, which probably has all the features + more anyways.

But i think it would be nice to have both OxOS and Cm12S to our phones. Im sure both will be ported soon even know one is based off of 5.0.2

Also, see my quote below.

First of all, porting firmware from one device to another is extremely unlikely to function properly. If you can even get it to boot (the hardest part), a LOT will be broken as it was not built relevant to the hardware. Porting a custom ROM is even more pointless when it can be built specifically for your device.
OxygenOS has not been released yet, but it's likely to have features that other custom ROMs already have/can easily replicate.
Porting "CM12S" from the OnePlus One to the Nexus 5 is ultimately pointless. CM12 can be built from source anyways, then you can just take the few additional extra apk files from CM12S and paste them in.

It is not available yet. Also, this thread is a bit old.
its an old thread, was reading about this as opo 2 is coming out, from what i read if that its not open sourced and there is a small team doing the build, the kernel will be open, i wonder how they will manage without the community

best camera for nexus 5

hello there first post so dont shoot me
im using nexus 5 about 4 years now as my daily driver and i tried many roms.
right now i have android 8.1 via liquidremix.
My biggest problem is camera. nexus 5 has a pretty ****ty camera right from the beggining but since nougat it starts to get annoying. i think it has to do with camera drivers.
can anyone enlight me wich version of android i must use for the best quality photos? is there any nougat or oreo roms that using their own drivers or marshmallow is the only way?
and if i must go to marshmallow i must use a factory image based rom or no?
please any specific rom recomendations will be very helpfull

I have a feeling that you use whatever camera comes with the ROM.
I have no problem with the camera, I use Google camera 3.2.xx, and even hdr works. ROM? AEX 8.1
I don't think there's any needs to go back to MM, but it's your choice.

Decent Roms

Few months in now I thought development would have gone a bit faster than this. I have to doubt we'll have a large collection now. But can anyone say what rom they have been using. And has anyone tried dirty unicorns? Whats that like? Cant fjnd any vids on youtube
I made a guide and compiled AOSP, with the edition of certain proprietary files that unlock various stock features. I posted it here. Unofficial Lineage works reasonably well too.

Mainly it allows T mobile VoLTE and WiFi calling to work, and I suspect allows it to work on other services too. Also hopefully will get the eSIM to work too.

[Oneplus Nord/Avicii] Any way of getting stock camera on custom Roms?

Hey I am newbie here on XDA and wanna try out new roms on my phone (OP Nord), Is there any way of installing stock OOS camera on custom roms? the preinstalled camera on Lineage Os is just ok, tried Gcam also but i prefer the results from stock camera app. This the only thing which is stopping me from using custom rom and i reinstalled oxygen os back again using MSM tools and i miss the overall stock android feel and customizability of custom roms.
I'm interested too.... Anyway you know how to turn back to oxygen?

In what way was it bad? Im seconds away from flashing lineageos on my oneplus nord
Was the quality bad, didn't all cameras work or was it purely GUI-wise?

In my opinion is bad the lineage one because I cannot use all the secondary cameras of the phone. I tried also with Google camera but I have the same problem

Oh okey, that sucks. But the regular camera, and 16:9/10 (what ever it is) provides the same quality pictures?

No that doesn't work OnePlus camera needs some Oxygen Os API to work , sideloading just the apk won't work.

The pics taken from lineage os stock camera are no way comparable to the stock cam pics, its like taking photos using whatsapp's camera remember how bad that look. Also there are a lot of features missing its not actually meant to be used for specifically in nord it was made as a generic app to be used in any lineage os build. It gets the work done but quality is very low. Gcam over saturates the image I don't know how people are using it in my experience gcam never gave a better results than Oxygen Os cam. Just for this reason I reverted back to Oxygen Os using MSM tools. As far as I remember OnePlus 7 series also had this problem where custom rom's camera weren't able to produce high quality images. So custom rom maker started putting original Oxygen Os cam in the rom itself I don't know how they did it, but I hope some does the same for the nord untill then custom rom for Nord can not be used as daily driver.

I used MSM tool guide can be found here

It wipes all the data and restore phone back to how it was originally.
You may also use this Guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-stock-fastboot-roms-for-oneplus-nord.4142153
It does the same but using fastboot method it'll also wipe your data.
