[GUIDE] [NON-ROOT/CUSTOM ROM/ROOT] How to fix screen burn-in/image persistence - Moto G6 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello everyone .
In this guide I will explain what is image persistence/how you can prevent it happening in the first place and how you can fix it if your phone suffers from this. This guide applies to all phones that suffers it and will work for rooted and non-rooted devices. I will try to make this guide easy to follow that everyone can understand this. There might be typo errors because English isn't my native language.
What is screen burn-in?
Actually LCD screens don't suffer from screen burn-in (only old CRT screens and OLED screens), but they can suffer from image persistence.
An LCD screen uses liquid crystals to display image. Liquid crystals are naturally in "relaxed state" when screen is off. But when screen is turned on, a voltage is applied to the screen and liquid crystals will go to "activate" mode. If screen is left with same voltage (same image) for extended period time, the liquid crystals will remain in same position causing image persistence. Luckily this is just a temporary effect for LCD screens and will not damage your screen. But it can be annoying .
How I can prevent it from happening?
Don't left the same image for long time and don't use high brightness. You can also use Immersive mode on your phone.
Why this doesn't happen on all phones?
This seems to be issue only on specific screens like the ones that are on Motorola and LG phones.
Where I can test if my phone suffers from this?
This site is good to test it.

Steps to do if your phone is affected by this:
Non-root GUIDE:
Download app called sFilter (or similar) that can apply filter on your device.
In the sFilter app settings enable Blue Light Filter and set Filter opacity to 10%. Set Color of the filter to black. In other filter apps settings are probably similar.
Custom ROM GUIDE:
You can install Custom ROM like LineageOS or Resurrection Remix that have option to calibrate colors.
You need to have unlocked bootloader (GUIDE to unlock bootloader on Motorola phones). You can search on xda for specific guide for your phone. After unlocking bootloader you need to install your preferred Custom ROM. If your device supports Treble project you can look for ROMs here. If you device don't support Treble you can search on xda for other ROMs.
In the Colour calibration settings (maybe different, depends on ROM) put these values:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
You can find Colour calibration settings in LineageOS by going Settings --> Display --> LiveDisplay --> Colour calibration
Root GUIDE:
Your device needs to be rooted for this. Also your kernel needs to support KCAL (Most stock kernels don't support this). If your device meets these criterias then continue.
Download app called Color Control. Open the app and allow root permissions if prompted. In the app put these values:

For rooted phones that supports KCAL (Moto G6 phones don't support that at the moment) and Custom ROM guide (like Treble ROMs that Moto G6 phones supports) and non-root guide for users that don't want to modify their devices.

Motorola G6 Plus version. But it will probably work on normal G6 version too. If something fails you can reflash your phone back to stock by following this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g6/development/stock-firmware-moto-g6-t3792292
Here is guide how to flash Treble ROM https://www.xda-developers.com/flash-generic-system-image-project-treble-device/

I didn't know this device had image retention issues? LCDs usually don't, it's usually the OLED displays. I had my phone sit on TWRP recovery all night and no image is stuck.

OLED screens don't suffer from image persistence, they can suffers from screen burn-in.

Engineer Bootloader means that there is no lock at all. Hence why it says Secure = no. It also means the OP has a very rare XT1541 Moto G 2015 which is worth a few bucks!.
It means the OP can do what ever to any partition there is no lock on anything.

Oké we have same opinion abt status engineering i installed cwm 12 in my never locked Motog 2015- XT1541 (osprey) and it works great interesting thing is that i cant install Cwm 13 or other A 6 based OS Except original / stock Android with fastboot or RSD Lite.
I have the same problem, when i boot RR 5.7.3 or any other r61 or later rom build i get a kernel panic and makes a ramdump. Not booting at all. Now im on vatsal RR 5.7.2 and i have no problems. Hope it helps someone to find something. Thx

FYI... Due to the fact that several users have seen this, and it's started showing up in the Moto X Pure community, I posted in the Lenovo forums for more information on this in this thread.
The response was quite clear from AlphaDog (Moto Sr Moderator):
The phones should not be showing Engineering. If you get a phone back this way, it was not flashed properly and needs to be reflashed - call customer service and make arrangements to have it reflashed.

You should flash back to stock and contact Moto customer service.. It is entirely possible your device was misflashed and isn't even reporting the correct RAM or storage space. A device with a Engineering state for the bootloader cannot be trusted.

No, the problem is that it should never have left Moto with an Engineering bootloader... Look back about 4 posts to see what Moto had to say.

How to disable temp sensor?

Does anybody know how to disable the temperature sensor? My phone's sensor is not working, temp is shown as -302ºC, so I can't charge the phone unless it is on recovery mode.

Disabling it, I'm not sure. Have you tried factory reset, etc?
In Kernel Adiutor app which comes with Resurrection Remix ROM (and also works with other custom ROMs) you can change the thermal threshold to be as high as you want. You can even download that app from the Play store.

Changing it in stock firmware, I don't know. You don't say if your bootloader is unlocked and whether you are rooted or not. Kernel Adiutor needs root.
But be VERY careful. The phone gets very hot anyway sometimes. When I was visiting Brazil in Mato Grosso (hot weather) and was installing a lot ROM updates in Recovery, I would stick the phones in the freezer for a few minutes to cool them down while they rebooted and optimized all the apps.

Are you able to charge in TWRP recovery like the other guy? He was able to charge while in recovery, but not in his regular ROM.
Have you updated to the latest TWRP?
Have you completely re-set your device and re-installed ROM? Maybe try another ROM, just to see? Have you tried restoring factory firmware, just to see?

My answer stands. If you go to our TWRP thread, @bhb27 explains you have to ignore that TWRP website. He got us "official" status with them, then they have ignored his improvements which are necessary for the newest ROMs.
Even in my bootloader unlock guide, I tell people to only use @bhb27 modded version. On the newer Nougat ROMs, the official TWRP version for Quark will mess up your phone.

I assumed you had a Quark (Moto Maxx, Moto Turbo, Droid Turbo), since you didn't say otherwise and you are posting in the Quark forum... specifically in the "Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting" section. Yet, you don't have a Quark and I didn't know that.
You are probably using the latest version of TWRP for Moto Clark. My answers about TWRP were specifically for Quark and the modded versions from @bhb27 we need to use for latest ROMs.

What about the camera quality? It's worst than with the original ROM? Or which other ROM can I put?
So, I received today this device, first impressions are very positive, just one thing I can't understand is about wi-fi: it doesn't work properly in my opinion, my previous G2 held up enough good wi-fi signal (like 2-3 "tiers") with a distance of 6-7 meters between the router and the phone, now with the Mi 4 I have only one. Obviously the connection is affected by low wi-fi signal.

Hi
If you want to have the same camera quality as that of MiUi, I assure you that you won't. The picture quality is dizzy, blunt and not so clear as it used to be on MiUi's stock camera. Still, I'd recommend using a custom camera app.

Hi,
I'm a complete noob when it comes to phones!
I have a proper MI 4LTE (from China - I know it's a proper one as I was given it by the company itself whilst in China!)
I would like to get rid of everything on the phone, especially all the MIUI stuff (which I assume is the OS?).
I'd like to put on the latest official proper Android OS that is compatible with the phone. Can I somehow format it and download the OS from Google's Android website somewhere and put that on? E.g. Nougat or whatever the latest compatible one is.

I have a Xiaomi MI4 running MIUI 7, and I would like to install xposed modules. In the past, one could use WSM tool, but it seems to be off development. Could you explain how can I enjoy xposed modules now?

Thank you for your reply. However, I am trying to install the adb drivers to use the fastboot, and it just won't work. under "device manager" there's no yellow exclamation mark, but when trying the command "adb devices" no device is found (the phone is connected and usb debugging is on). Tried to change the usb port but still no luck.

Eventually managed using the TWRP app alone. Another question- after installing ROMs, could I delete the update.zip file? and in case I cannot, as I have two files named like this, how would I know which one is to be deleted?
Thanks
Mi note Pattern Lock
PoseidonKing said:
Hi
If you want to have the same camera quality as that of MiUi, I assure you that you won't. The picture quality is dizzy, blunt and not so clear as it used to be on MiUi's stock camera. Still, I'd recommend using a custom camera app.

Stuck at my logo after fastboot oem unlock
Hi,
first time posting.
I think I have made a bit of a noob mistake. I am completely new to the world of rooting, custom roms etc... (you get the idea). I was looking at getting started with all of this and I read somewhere that to unlock the bootloader on the Xiaomi Mi 4, all you needed to do was type the command
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
.
I did this and it completed successfully, however now when booting I get to the Mi logo and then the phone turns off after a a few seconds. I can still get into fastboot mode (power and volume -) and also the stock Mi recovery (power and volume +). I also tried relocking the bootloader (i think) by tyrping
Code:
fastboot oem lock
.
When i use the Mi flash tool to flash a stock rom, it completes in 1 second and nothing changes with the booting situation. (before and after using fastboot oem unlock)
Now, i assume, that i shouldn't have used
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
in the way that I did.
Is there any hope of recovering my device. I am a complete noob at this kind of stuff and to make things worse, i attempted this when i was tired. (didnt make things any better).

Crashed my phone
Tried to make a backup in TWRP and since then when booting the "dead android" flashes on the screen. Can boot into recovery with fastboot but so far can't fix. Any suggestions please?

I suggest it's not the ROM. Could try this from fastboot but don't blame the ROM it's impossible.
fastboot devices
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
Did you flash magisk or dm-verity before booting, if it works tick and untick mount from advanced in twrp before flashing another rom

So I thought viper was the best ROM on here, now you have improved on that with this one.
No, no magisk or other stuff. Just booted after flashing rom and stock gapps. Myphone is dead
I was thinking about flashing this ROM, but I don't want a dead device so i ll stay at bay until I know how to properly install this ROM. I don't wanna end up Screwed! Haha

There is nothing wrong with the ROM I flashed it 2x, maybe he had failed DL, it's just lineage with a few tweaks like every other ROM on here. User error I'm afraid. No lineage ROM can do that to any phone at anytime, worst that can happen is it doesn't install, reboot to recovery and flash something else, it could be a faulty phone but if its a recent purchase think only multirom twrp works correctly, even then boot to fastboot and flash multirom twrp.

I flashed it and not to pile on but I agree 100%
Tutorials are online to restore the phone to stock factory condition.
If it still turns on it's not bricked yet.

Flash multirom twrp from fastboot and try again, if you can boot to fastboot it's not dead magisk is included anyway so that's not your problem.
This is the first international device iv ever had. I came from the nexus 6. This sounds stupid but I had that device mastered I owned 3 different N6 over a 3 yr period. I would hard brick it just so I could fix it lol. I got bored with the N6 and decided to get the mi mix. I still like the N6 and who knows I may go back lol or have one on stand by just in case I start having withdraws. I only wish there was more development going on with the mi mix. I also would like to see tweaks like what's on the Marshmallow ROMs. It seems like there is a lot more tweaks and what not on MM as compared to Nougant. I am trying very hard to love the mi mix, I just hope it works out for me. As for this ROM I will reserve my flash for a later time.

Wimp:laugh: it's true though less development because Google trying to make it not worth rooting because you can do almost anything without it, for people on XDA that means boring. Don't worry though some other operating system will come along to take it's place, in fact heard one is starting up again
Thank you for another excellent rom for mi mix. It appears to have slightly battery life than remix. Love to use it as my daily rom except the Bluetooth share keeps force closing on me.

LineageOS is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 9 (Pie), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.
LineageOS is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. You will need to provide your own Google Applications package (gapps). LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.
Base source code is available in the LineageOS Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to the project, please visit our Gerrit Code Review.

Downloads:
Official download links
Notice:
No custom kernels are supported in this thread. Only stock kernel and official builds will be supported. No bug reports if that's not the case.
Installation:
Reboot to recovery (TWRP recovery for Mi MIX - Direct link)
Format /system, /data and /cache
Install LineageOS zip package
Install [optional] the LineageOS su addon to get root (there are obviously other root methods, but this is the recommended one as it survives to OTA updates)
Install [optional] a Google Apps package of your choice (Open GApps is advisable, but stock and super variants are not recommended!!!)
Important notes:
Current minimal * required * firmware version is MIUI 8.8.30 Global dev, otherwise installation will fail.
GApps can only be flashed on clean installs.
Formatting data (all user data is wiped, including internal storage) is a must if MIUI was previously installed and device was encrypted.
Credits & collaborations:
This work is due to efforts from everyone involved in Xiaomi 8996 development. The LineageOS team would like to thank everyone involved in helping with testing, coding, debugging & documenting! Enjoy!

Thank you.

Something is messing with the screen.
Proximity sensor keeps activating itself and shutting off the screen. ROM is unusable because it's impossible to get past the splash screen due to the constant screen offs

How you know that the problem is the proximity sensor? What firmware are you using?
O notice that sometimes the screen doesn't go completely off and keeps some back-light on.

Using firmware 8.8.9 from xiaomi.eu Android 8.0 MIUI weeklies. I believe it's the proximity sensor because that's what usually causes the screen to turn off in a normally functioning phone. I have not noticed what youre describing. For me, after I press the power button to turn on the phone, the screen shuts itself off after 1 or 2 seconds. It's why I said the ROM is unusable, no offense, because I literally cannot get past the first page of the setup.
I don't think that the problem is the proximity sensor, because of was the proximity sensor the screens only goes off when the sensor is cover, and that's not true, the screen goes off always.
And it's important to test and try to figure what's the problem to help solving this issue.
