Update at bottom.
Couldn't pass up the price! I got the white one, less fingerprint magnet. I'm using it with Straight Talk with Verizon SIM. Here's my impressions after two days of use.
I've used the Moto X Pure for the past year. It was the only unlocked, multi-carrier large screen phone....I like 'em big ... Wait, that came out wrong....?
Update
First thing I did was all the updates, reset, update, reset... Wash rinse, repeat. Like Android likes to do, I couldn't download the last security update till I got on WiFi.... Wouldn't use data via the Moto's hotspot thus I had to go to the library, very rural area, only WiFi around....pita but typical Android not allowing system updates over data! So an uber clean start.
Overall I think the PH-1 is a good device. I haven't had any real negative bugs. The charging icon when off, the espresso cup, never shows fully charged. Otherwise the software seems like any other decent Android device I've used.
Build quality
IMHO ceramic isn't a good material to use. It's far too slippery to place on any surface, and being an insulator not great at removing heat, not to mention potential signal issues. However, my device's fit and finish is excellent, though it'll be the first device I use a case with — I've never broken a screen, knock on wood, in 5+ years. I have to put this in a case so I can set it on surfaces without it running off.
Screen
It's good, though too small imo. I really like the Moto X Pure more. Haven't compared them side by side on a great photo yet but I'm sure the PH-1 is better in that regard. The biggest pain is the text is so much smaller and there isn't a perfect setting for font size + display size, for me, thus I'm adapting to the default.
Camera
I'm not a big photo person. The camera to me does a good job. It took a photo of small print on a charging brick that can't be read. I've tried it with other devices and none could make the text clear but the PH-1 did.
Notch
IMO this notch and 2:1 screen ratio is stupid. However I will say essential did it the best you could. I don't mind it at all, but the reality is it's not a 5.7" screen — you rarely use the notification area (which is much larger), and if you do you get a wonky aspect ratio. IMO anything below 6" screen size needs to stay 16:9 and no notch. It's amazing how much more screen I have with the Moto X Pure.
Performance
Mine has been great. There's the occasional jitter or lag depending on the app but I've seen that on every Android device I've used — haven't used a pixel. FYI I turned off animations. Essential has done a good job keeping the bloatware down and unnecessary background running apps, I really appreciate that! Now if we could get Google to play along!
The PH-1 also does a lot better with ram management than the Moto! The Moto didn't take much before you were reloading the recent app or web page — I honestly don't think it ever used over 2GB of the ram. The Ph-1 IMO does well keeping recent apps/pages from being reloaded.
Fingerprint scanner
Works fast when it works but a lot of double tries. Might need to redo the setup.
Signal
I tested the signal between my two devices and here's what I noticed. The signal dB & dBm range is much greater on the PH-1 than the Moto. The Moto stays pretty steady in my current location which has a very strong Verizon signal. The PH-1 signal varies a lot ±10. It can be significantly lower or higher than the Moto. It seems to really decrease signal in standby, I'm guessing essential is turning down the power to the antenna to increase battery life when in standby which would be smart, and the signal IS AFFECTED BY HOW YOU HOLD IT, thus a case is a smart idea. Nonetheless my speeds are better.
Enhanced LTE
Can't make phone calls if it's enabled.... Most likely due to being on a mvno. And didn't notice any improvement in signal or data with it on.
Hotspot
Seems to be normal.
Speaker
It's loud! Louder than the Moto! There Moto sounds a bit better but not a lot. I'm pretty impressed.
Call quality
Seems the same.
Battery life
Very good. Nearly double the Moto! — I usually get 5hrs SOT browsing, and have had 12hrs SOT reading. I've always been able to get good SOT compared to most users — due to my usage habits. Where this one does so much better is the SoC IMO. I can browse about 2x what I can on the Moto. I'm sure the screen is more efficient also but I've not had enough time to test the two. I'm very pleased thus far.
Right now I'm at 87% battery with 2 hrs 15 minutes SOT! With LTE, location on, some browsing, signal testing, and writing this long winded thing.
Shipped with no charge
My device arrived with no charge, wouldn't even power into the battery charging state for a while.
Charging
First charge was slow! After that it has charged very fast, and doesn't get hot like the Moto.
USB-C to HDMI
Used this tiny converter and it worked!
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B077XFZXXL?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title
However, while video was properly displayed at 16:9 my landscape of the device was over sized. I had to set the display size to the largest, strangely, to make the screen smaller on the TV but it never was 1:1, always slightly bigger, and I couldn't find an adjustment on the TV for scanning HDMI.... Could be the TV.
No exFat support
A pita. Had to format my Samsung T5 ex ssd. The apps to use exfat (Paragon, mixplorer, etc) weren't good enough, better to reformat IMO if you're going to be using a particular device frequently. The read/wire speed to the T5 isn't super fast, ~100MBps.
I don't use NFC and rarely Bluetooth thus I haven't tested them and don't care.
Straight Talk setup
Of course their customer service insisted I get a new SIM card — you can't use the same SIM because they can only use one IMEI number per SIM. So I ordered a new SIM but tried the old one — data didn't work the first couple tries — the proper apn wasn't being loaded, but third time everything is rocking including the proper TracFone apn but it can't be edited — I don't know if that's Android 8 or what.
Got the Moto command center widget working as well though it loads slow on restart. I love this widget!
Used to use Swype, only keyboard I've used really, trying to get used to Gboard.... Not liking it at all!
Thanks for reading!
UPDATE 7.24.18
GPS, LTE, Wi-Fi, and cellular signal
FYI: using Straight Talk w/Verizon SIM.
Went for a drive into town today, I'm in a very rural area, and had a chance to really put the signal issues to the test.
GPS: no problems whatsoever. Connects faster than any device I've owned. Didn't drop either.
LTE: this device switches bands more than my Moto X Pure. While my Moto would stay on band 4 this will switch between 4 & 13, even in the same location not moving. The Moto has about -10dbm better on band 4, but the PH-1 is same or better on 13. I've read some say they think the big issue of signal with this device is band 4, seems lower for me as well.
I maintained a cellular signal the entire drive, but data dropped out just about the same as the Moto does in the same areas. So, about the same imo. However the data signal on this device was noticeably worse in the grocery store. To the point of not being useable till I found that perfect spot.
Wi-Fi: the grocery stores's WiFi was problematic. Connection showed stable but wouldn't transfer data. Turned off data, turned WiFi back on and worked better for a bit. I've had similar issues with other Android devices and WiFi, my Moto has been the best at WiFi connectivity.
I've had similar issues with every Android device I've owned — some type of connection bug in either WiFi, GPS, or data. So, to be fair the PH-1 isn't alone when it comes to connection issues and I'm sure much of that goes back to Google. All in all I would say signal, depending on available bands, can be a bit lower in general thus those really spotty areas may be non-existent. However, when connected I get much faster data speeds than my Moto.
A further note.... If you have VERY dry hands this thing is ridiculously slick! Not so bad when hands are "normal."
Like every Android device I've used or tested it has its own quarks, nothing to horrible though, at least in my case ?
Good review.
Fwiw I am using the custom nav bar app that hides both the nav and status bar. That combined with setting display setting small and font extra large works pretty decent. I am coming from a Nexus 6 which has a ton of screen space.

Here's a newer version of the widget.... I loaded it last night and it seems ok. If you want the one i had in the screen shot let me know, but I think this one functions better.

Are you talking about Natcho notch?
Sent from my PH-1 using XDA Labs
Essential has a 19:10 screen ratio, not 18.5/9, which brings it closer to a standard width phone. I actually feel like I have quite a bit more screen over the s8 I had before this. I can't wait until you can fill the notch area on android P. The black bar that happens drives me nuts. I'm using the XDA gestures app and a magisk module to hide the nav bar, so at least I gain that space.

The S8 2:1 aspect ratio is to narrow.... I looked at those 2:1 phones compared to my Moto X Pure and I couldn't give up that much screen. I think the PH-1 would have been better at 6" ... But that's me ?
Im not planning on rooting. I get to OCD when I go down that road and waste to much time. So I'll take what I can. But all in all I'm good with the device.

My biggest complaint as well. I have both the glossy black and matte grey, and the grey is so much nicer. No fingerprints, and nowhere near as slippery as the glossy black one

When I ordered I didn't notice the grey was matte. Probably could take fine sandpaper and turn this into matte. Did that with a LG G2 and it worked great, but that was plastic.
Think I'll go with the Incipio dualpro case instead, just for the screen drop protection.

Eventually I"m sure they'll add the setting to go full immersive like they had in oreo under dev settings. I kinda can't wait. That was my favorite thing about running AOSiP and RR, and almost makes me want to go back and just use the gestures app on one of those.

The full immersive mode on Oreo is ok for certain things, but on videos you have to zoom in every single time, not a natural fit thus why I'm a 16:9 fan ?
But that is better than nothing!!!
I really wish Google would have gone all in on gestures AKA Blackberry OS 10. This phone is perfect for that!

Honestly, the gestures are so half baked, that is why I'm using the xda app even though I'm on p. The nav bar still being there means you gain no extra space (they could have at least made it transparent. Tried navbar apps but there is no transparency option), and the back button looks ridiculous.

No...I'm using command bar app that allows full immersive mode. No Nav bar or status bar with any app or desktop mode unless you swipe the screen on finger print sensor. I have full screen from top to bottom all the time.

Well, I saw a Rogers user posting his comments after a week of use so I figured I'd post some opinion as well, especially since I disagree with several of his opinions.
First, I've noticed the wi-fi issue as well. As with some other posters my router is not known to be super reliable, so that could have some impact. Also, it seems that some folks are having success switching to G instead of N and that may also help as I believe I am on G at work and I haven't had any issue with wi-fi at work. Hopefully this can be fixed with a software update.
I first reported some disappointment with the warm hue of the screen, and either it is growing on me or it is burning in a little bit and the tans, greens, and oranges are starting to look better. The screen as a whole looks fantastic. Several people have remarked how it looks like a sticker on the phone or like the image is sitting on top of the glass. The resolution is fantastic and everything looks crisp vibrant. Reds, blues, and yellows look fine too. White seems pretty white to me. When comparing a white screen on the HOX to an AMOLED screen the HOX looks white and the AMOLED looks blue.
Battery life is about what I was expecting and seems to be on-par with the international version. I've not had any trouble making it from 8AM to 11PM even with pretty heavy usage. It's not as good as my Captivate on AOKP which could make it ~30 hrs under my normal usage which is relatively light. Because the HOX is such a great phone and it's brand new I've been using it a lot more so the most I think I've gotten is 18 or 19 hours which most people would consider fantastic in consideration of the usage.
Camera is by no means average and it absolutely smokes the iPhone 4S. I took some test shots with my wife's iPhone and the HOX just blows it away. The flash is much better, but even in low light without the flash the HOX looks better, has less grain to the photos and generally focuses better and has better color reproduction. The speed of the camera is incredible and using the burst mode to capture a moment is a stroke of genius if you have a dog or a kid that you want to take a pic of them doing something cute.
I've not had any status bar icon issues or in call volume adjustment.
My biggest complaint is not being able to turn off LTE since I'm not in an LTE area. I tried using a different APN and I didn't notice any difference and it didn't improve my battery life at all. I only had the new APN for ~2 days but I felt I may have been getting worse battery life, but certainly wasn't getting better battery life so I just went back to the stock APN.
I guess the Rogers poster was coming from an iPhone and remarked on a slight lag moving between homescreens. This is exagerated to say the least. This phone with sense 4.0 is the fastest UI I've seen on an android phone and the only phone that is more fluid is the iphone and that is due to apple putting realtime priority on UI rendering computations while Android puts industry standard normal priority on rendering. No matter how good the code is, no matter how fast the processor is, it's just never going to look like the iphone because it's never going to have realtime priority. That said, this phone responds instantly to all touches in virtually all parts of the phone. The only times I've seen lag is either app related or network related. It's a great user experience.
Another concern I saw in some other threads that I completely agree with is that the white smudges easily. In addition, the polycarbonate shell may be very durable in that it protects the phone, but it's basically the same material as a LEGO and as such can be dented with a drop as I've unfortunately experienced already. As far as the smudging the phone wipes back to a bright white easily, but probably needs to be cleaned every few days to keep it bright white and not getting dull. The white looks fantastic, best looking white phone out there, but I'd have to reluctantly recommend the grey if you aren't going to use a case in order to hide some dirt and dings more easily.
Overall, this is a fantastic phone. HTC has lived up to the hype and produced THE top android the device out right now. If you want the best in basically every area, you want an HOX right now, and it doesn't look like Samsung is going to beat it and it's going to take quite some time for the S3 to come to the US. If you've got an ATT upgrade in the next 2 months, you'd be crazy not to drop it on the HOX.
Hey since your on the AT & T version and you don't have the setting to turn LTE off. Type *#*#4636#*#* go to phone information and you can switch it to GSM/HSPA only. Let me know if that works for you!
My two biggest concerns right now are the wi-fi performance (which seems to be real and potentially fixed with a software update) and the battery life. In a few days we should see professional reviews for the AT&T model that will be able to compare the international and LTE editions under equal usage.
I know the white is harder to keep clean but I really prefer the look of it over the grey. Maybe I'd just make the effort to keep it clean.
I also think the camera lens is an issue with respect to scratches. I don't plan on using a case 95% of the time, so I'd have to find a DIY way to cover said lens while not in use. (I was thinking a small piece of electrical tape or something along those lines.)
I'm also going to wait until the WWDC keynote next month to see what Apple has in store for iOS 6.
If the wi-fi issue can get settled, battery life is solid while using LTE, iOS 6 isn't leaps and bounds better than iOS 5, then I'll probably make the jump. Some things to line up first though.

I did some more testing with the camera and no doubt it is able to create some fairly high quality shots. I just find the camera experience a bit easier overall with the i4s. We have matte grey walls at home and for some reason they always show up weird and distorted, I'll take a pic after work tonight and post it to show you what I mean.. I'll also post a comparison pic off the iPhone camera.

No clue if I'll end up getting the One X, but if I do, I'm only going to use a case when necessary (working around the house, etc). Love the way that polycarbonate feels in my hand. Camera lens needs to be covered with something though.
Has anyone messed with the APN settings and noticed a difference in battery life. You definitely can force HSPA/+.
How much do you love your V10 ?
After root my v10 I really love more then before because root bring me to Manny options for Theming my V10 make feel my phone lake on others level .

Coming from G3, almost didn't go to to LG because of it. This thing is a whole different world of awesome. Things that overheated and throttled my G3 don't even warm this thing up, and best part, no data issues going from WiFi to mobile!!! Love the second screen too. Need to point out that realistically it is only a 5 inch screen.
With controls and second screen. You effectively have only a 5 inch screen with a whole lot of bulk. Granted the internals are great. Although it is not in any way a 5.7 inch screen. Great phone, but let down on such a massive phone with effectively no more screen area than a S4.
Not to mention. NO blinking notification and no temperature or humidity sensors. Infered is marginal at best.

Umm, no, it's not a 5" screen. The main screen is 5.7" minus how much space the buttons at the bottom take up, which is like any other phone not made my Samsung.
The second screen is a completely independent 2.1" screen. Please don't spread misinformation.
And they didn't put a led light because that is what the second screen is partly for. And if you want all those sensors, get a Samsung.
Sounds like you need to do more research before you buy a $600+ smartphone only to be disappointed for you own lack of research.

Actually, if you go get yourself a tape measure, the 5.7 doesn't include the second screen... And if you're really tech savvy, you can hide the navigation bar when you aren't using it... So on both of those counts, you are wrong... Also, all your notifications appear on the second screen, which to me is more convenient than a blinking light, since I don't even need to open my phone to check my notifications. And also, the infrared controls my stuff from anywhere in the living room, which works fine for me... Considering Samsung no longer has this option, it's a plus. Other than that, sorry to ruin your phone bash, have a super day.

This phone made me love it. My G3 started getting the BSOD and honestly I'd planned switch to a Samsung S7 Edge in March, or whenever it is released. Went to the store to try to get a used G4 just to hold me off until then but they didn't have any. Walked out with the V10. Unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP and SU and have been loving it ever since. I'm not really sure why because aside from the standard faster processor, gig more memory and slightly larger screen, it wasn't that much different from my G3 but I've really grown to like this thing. Second screen is the phone's first bullet point but it's kind of gimmicky and I don't really have a use for it, but besides that stuff just seems to work better on the V10. It doesn't have Bluetooth connection issues like my G3 did, phone doesn't heat a small room under heavy use, and I'm not clearing apps to free up 200mb more memory all day. Call quality is great, quick charge is awesome, and the 5.7" screen is really, really, really nice. A louder and clearer speaker is the only thing the G3 did better but the V10's will do. So I've warmed up to my step child and really not thinking about the S6/S7 at the moment.

You do know that the screen + the second screen measure to 5.9 inches right? I have a S4 also and the screen is alot bigger on the V10 than the S4...

I agree with you. I come from the nexus 6 and so far I love this phone but the lack of custom Rom and development is kind of ?.
Bought mine during launch week, and was disappointed it had major issues: second-screen bleed was bad, and the speaker sounded really distorted. Then a month later the wireless charging chip died.
T-Mobile replaced it with a brand new unit manufactured in late December and it is absolutely perfect. No bleed at all, speaker is crystal-clear. Loving it, especially the camera!
Started out with Lg G2 d800,loved that phone sold it and got lg g3 D850 awesome phone.. Finally decided to get the v10,its very smooth, fast, beautiful display, whenever i take pictures my friends are stunted by how beautiful and rich the photos come out. Manual controls on camera and video, dual front face camera, removable battery , sdcard support, slick and premium design over kill. This is by far the best device i have ever owned since day one 'htc touch pro2' ... Im really impressed with this phone...
I upgraded from a Nexus 6. My first experience with LG (Android wise) was with the G2 and the Flex. So going to the V10 was easy. My only caveat is the fact that I moved back to 5.1.1 when I've been on 6.0.1 for a bit. Can't wait for some decent roms to truly use this phones full potential.
I almost gave up on androind OS after two generations of Samsung Galaxy devices, Note 3 and until today Note 4. The update from Kitkat ruined the Note 4 experience completely for me, if anything left me frustrated. Ive reached an age whereby I just want something to do as it says on the box, typing on the Note 4 became a nightmare for me, tiny space bar mistyping all the time. Wifes Iphone 6plus was appealing but thought Id try another brand of Droid. Earlier today walked out of the T Mobile store with a new V10.
With 815 nits and low glare screen, the Moto X Pure is by far the most easily readable 5.5" or larger phone under direct sunlight.... which also has unlocked bootloader and can flash CM/AOSP ROM's.
Just wanted to mention that fact.
And based on history, I don't expect the upcoming Nexus 5.5" to have a brighter screen even though it's AMOLED.
Heck, even the Moto Z is far more dim.
Combined with the bright screen, SD storage, water "resistant" and nice bezel to screen ratio size, the MotoX Pure just can't be replaced for me right now.
And I really, really am itching for a new phone.
Just isn't anything on the market that compares (for my needs) right now.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Nothing out there at the moment seems worth it to upgrade.

Same here, too - currently rocking an EU X Style.
My only complaint is how weak these screens are, and if you get even one little crack 9t renders the screen useless... My s4 was shattered all over and still functioned perfectly. I've broken this stupid screen twice, second time barely at all and screen didn't work. Luckily the first time I ordered a new screen they seller accidentally sent me 2
I agree. I bought this to use with Republic Wireless to try out their new GSM service. My old Moto X 1st Gen still works great, but I was itching for a new toy, and I'm not rich, so the Amazon Prime Day special was perfect for me. When I got it, I immediately started missing the AMOLED screens I'm used to with the Moto X 1st Gen and 2 Galaxy S4's that I have. The resolution is gorgeous, but I miss the deep blacks and popped colors. BUT....today I was using it outside, and it was by far the best phone I've used outside! And I love the GravityBox feature to slide the brightness up swiping the status bar.
True... But the cost of that brightness and outdoor visibility is it drains your battery like fruit in a juicer. High screen brightness where the display is maxed out is beautiful on this device, but if you can get 90 minutes of usage on a full charge your darn lucky.

I like the look of the Note 7 too but less keen on the cost. Nothing really makes me want to swap my X Style. Bright screen, good speakers, good mobile reception, battery lasts me most days but can always top up with turbo charger. Might even get Android N? Mine is still stock.

Agreed. I have a 6P right now and it's useless under sunlight with polarized sunglasses on.

There is an app for that.
Wish I could remember what it's called, but I do remember it worked well for me back when I needed it.
Search Play store for Bluetooth and you'll find some neat things.
Uhh. I just downgraded to a Xperia z5 compact, mainly because the headphone jack broke on this, probably because it's so darn big and using the jack in my pocket puts too much pressure on it.
I chose the z5c because it has dual speakers and almost the same chipset:
The speakers are crap compared to the X. The screen in sunlight has these weird glares as if you can see tiny wires over the screen(the digitizer?) And the 810 inside it gets really hot doing the simplest things, like redditing.
So now I use both phones. The X for reading/listening to stuff around the house, and the z5c for when I'm out.
Would u recommend the moto x over 6p. I like Android N on the 6p but the screen is dim as hell. I have a HTC 10. But I want a bigger screen. Thoughts? Thanks
I sometimes think about moving to the HTC 10! I do find the X Style a little clumsy to use one handed. On the other hand I like the bigger display. BTW, how do you find the HTC 10 display outside on a bright day?
As to getting an X Pure/Style over the Nexus then I'm sure you'll find the Moto display easier to use on bright days. Otherwise is the Style better than the Nexus 6p then I don't know for sure. If your bothered about updates then the Nexus will be better. For the money I'm sure you'll not be disappointed with the Style/Pure

It will depend on you really. If getting the latest and greatest Android version and security updates is a big deal, then the 6p. If you are outside our using your phone in really bright areas a lot then the MXPE is the better for that. Everything else after these considerations will really depend on what little features that each offers that you think will benefit you the most.
I'm looking to finally upgrade from my AT&T Note 3. I want SD card support, 5.7+ screen, and an unlocked bootloader. Moto X Pure seems to be the perfect phone for me.... unless someone can recommend a better phone.
I have been putting out information about U11+ in hamdir's thread for couple of days. I thought may be I should collate all the information and create a thread. So, here it is. Note that I am going to keep adding stuff as I use the phone everyday to point out the good the bad and the ugly. Go ahead and ask questions. If its possible for me, I will try to answer.
Quick update
Very quick update folks....
I got the amazing silver in my hands now. Been fiddling with options etc. for last 30 mins.
It a thing of beauty, let me tell you that first and foremost!! Amazing silver is really a shiny light blue colour. I love it!
Indoors, its brighter than my HTC 10 Tianma display. By how much? I don't know but its uncomfortably high for me at max. I won't use it at anywhere close to max. May be around 50%. Can't compare outdoor in direct sunlight until tomorrow. Will update again.
The weight is not a concern for me, its a little bit more than my 10 but not by much. The screen is gorgeous and much better than 10!!
The FP scanner is a little bit of a problem for me because I am not used to the rear scanner. I am finding it odd to pick the phone to use it. But I knew this going in. So, some mental recalibration is necessary. I can see OCD types hating this aspect, but I am fine with it.

Couple of more quick updates:
1. Speakers are much better than HTC 10. Louder and clearer. You would be very pleased to hear these if you upgrade from HTC 10. Just saw the infinity war trailer on it and listened through Thriller....
2. Lowest screen brightness gets very low. Good for night time, in-dark browsing. Much lower than HTC 10.
3. The screen gets much blacker than HTC10 in "day dream" or "always on" mode in the complete darkness, which may help with battery if you are thinking of keeping AOD on always. The "light bleed" associated with LCD panels is still there through. In fact, its little uneven compared to HTC 10. On HTC 10, you can clearly see that the whole screen is lit up but only the text is brighter. On U11+, the lower left part of the screen is almost complete black whereas the right side shows more light bleed. I don't know if its a defect in my unit or its just something impossible to achieve during LCD panel manufacturing. Not perfection but not a big deal for me.
The default is not AOD but it is turn on the dimly lit display when you pick up the phone.
Double tap to wake works (someone asked earlier). On display button let's you put it to sleep in case you don't want to press power button to lock/put it sleep.
So far, thrilled to get this phone. I hope we work out TWRP really quick, root and I can move to this phone as my daily driver.

GSMArena got the battery life wrong on this phone or they tested a different phone. I have been setting up, installing apps, syncing email accounts and generally fiddling with this phone for past 3-4 hours with 1h40m of SOT (screen brightness at 50% with Auto on, my typical setting for HTC 10) and it has consumed about 16% of battery. Haven't got that kind of battery life from any phone I have used or seen anybody else use in practical terms (I don't believe in artificial benchmarks). I think there is nothing to worry about battery life on this phone. This will last even the big time users through the day (10-12 hour day) easily.
One thing i notice is that its idling very well when turned off. My HTC 10 did not do that very well. So, the wifi chip seems to have been fixed up.
Note that its running 8.0.0 with Oct 1st patch. So, this has to still get the 8.1.1 release, which potentially should improve things.

Its still morning here in bay area and not afternoon sunny yet. But with the morning sun behind me, I can clearly say that U11+ is better than my HTC10. With HTC camera app, I looked through a chain of balconies shaded by trees, and sun behind me, to see how far each screen shows me. Side by side, I could see more detail and farther in U11+. This is highly unscientific but the brightness in sunlight is an upgrade from HTC10 Tianma to U11+. I will try to get some photos of the two phones' camera app in sunlight later in the day.
I think brightness jump is not huge from HTC 10, but its big enough for me to say I feel more comfortable taking photos/videos outdoors. Note that Camera sensor may also be playing a role in this. HTC 10 has a smaller f/1.8 aperture. So, more testing may be needed on the screen brightness in general. But practically speaking, I browsed around and I had no trouble reading text with sun behind me, falling directly on the phone. That's good for me, 500 nits or not.
I tried with both Auto brightness enabled and disabled, at max brightness. Results are same.

Someone had asked for 4G/LTE support in the US. At least in the area I am in (bay area, CA), the coverage is same as what I got in HTC 10 on T Mobile.
Regarding the wifi, its much better than HTC 10. I compared side by side and HTC10 needed to be closer to the router by about 10 feet to be able to do speedtest from the point where I could speedtest on U11+ and still get full 90Mbps download speed. U11+ has an excellent wifi range and throughput. I get around -71dBm (signal strength) from my router at a spot where my HTC10 gives me -83dBm. At that spot, U11+ maxes out the internet traffic, whereas 10 is limited to about 45Mbps. So, anyone with HTC 10 will appreciate the huge jump in performance of wifi.
Also, the idling issue found with HTC 10's wifi is not there in U11+. It does not eat through battery while idling on wifi.

Couple of more inputs:
1. I went to work with the phone but unfortunately I did not have the other phones with me to click the photos in bright sunlight but I can tell you, the screen has no problems in the sun. It is very bright and very usable for me. Unless you have a defective unit, the brightness of the screen should not be a concern at all. My experience is only HTC 10 vs U11+, and I am loving the brightness upgrade.
2. Usage with my sunglasses. I can not use HTC 10 in portrait mode with my sunglasses on. It goes complete dark. I did not have any issues with U11+ in both portrait and landscape orientations. Am I thrilled to wear my sunglasses in the car again? HELL YEAH!!!

Make your M7 a cosy bed in that drawer because its going in there for sure and for a long time.... U11+ is big upgrade (from M7 and 10, both of which I own) in sound department, both the speakers and the USB-C headphone jack, through the bundled earbuds. I have found the bundled USB-C earbuds to be of very high quality. I usually throw away packaged earbuds because they usually fall off from my ear but these fit in my ear very well. And boy they block the noise!!! I have no complaints about the missing 3.5mm jack.

Honestly, I don't use this feature anymore. In fact, with casting feature working so well (AC wifi) and its so very convenient compared to the wire, casting gets used most of the time. I used to do this but I never bothered to buy the USB-C cable with my HTC 10.
May be I will try this again. Try some gaming on the big TV screen, fun fun fun!!
screen casting with chromecast or similar technologies always has a noticeable lag of 1-2 seconds. With direct cable connection there is no lag.

AOD on HTC U11+, in my opinion, leaves a lot to be desired. Few observations:
1. It only has two modes: a. show dimly lit clock/lock screen when picked up, b. always on mode, which is fixed 24/7 or on a time schedule. It lacks the mode "show dimly lit clock/lock screen when notifications arrive and repeat every 5 mins until cancelled".
2. Always On mode is a hog. Nearly 2% per hour idling. Not very useful. Its darker than any LCD I have seen before but it still show most of the display in complete darkness.
It does not provide any customization in either mode. You get 4 types of clock and that's about it. It shows apps (including music app) and their notifications with icons on small area and clicking takes to the app after unlock.

I don't have bluetooth headsets to test this sorry.
But the display is the best LCD I have seen. It can not be equal to amoled in terms of blacks, but its the closest that an LCD has come in terms of blacks. I think the LCD technology does not allow this any better compared to amoled in terms of blacks. The contrast is amazing and the brightness is very very good. The usage in direct sunlight is very comfortable.
Unless you want to knit pick (like always on display has slight light bleed, which is the result of them trying too hard to emulate "black"), you won't have any issues with this display.

I specifically bought the HDMI->USB-C cable from Amazon for $19 (one of the most expensive cables I have bought) and tested it. It works great. No lags in the video (my TV is 1080p). The sound through my sound system sounded great.

Idle drain is very minimal
It looks like wifi draining the battery when idling that was seen and documented by me on HTC10, is gone on U11+. I left the sync ON, data and wifi ON overnight. And I lost 2% battery in about 10 hours. This is how it should be.
Very very pleased with the battery and the phone overall. For me, this phone gets almost everything right. It will get better once I get hold of root on it.

Great feedback on this device. Thanks for doing this @devsk
I am in SF also. I have been seriously torn about buying a international no warranty phone. I jumped to the LG V30, purchased from B & H then cancelled the order a couple days ago.
However, I ordered the U11+ last night from Amazon - NGP Store USA. They get decent reviews but have a really strict return policy. I tried the U11 earlier this year but returned it. The U11+ had all the U11 was missing + more. [emoji3]

-- Cases seem to be limited. Do you purchase one?
Thanks.

I did not buy a warranty. I took a chance and its been fine so far. The quality of the device and manufacturing is very very high. I am very pleased with the whole experience. Do not believe anybody who disses this device. It checks pretty much every box I had. Biggest thing is Treble. I expect to run well supported AOSP on this thing.

This phone does not get hot under any circumstances (brightness or extended play). I have it in the bundled minimal case, and I played racing games for extended periods of time (connected to my TV using a USB-C to HDMI adapter). It drove the TV's 1080p display without any delay and with great sound! It felt warm after an hour of play but I would qualify that a lukewarm. My HTC 10 definitely gets much warmer than U11+. So, its an upgrade for me.

It depends on the video's aspect ratio. For example, Inifinity War Trailer filled the screen but apple sway ad did not. It does not stretch in general and I think that's the right thing to do. I would not like videos with a different native aspect ratio than 2:1 to stretch and show all stretched faces etc.
Per Google they are adding the option.

so I went to best buy this evening to check it out.
unfortunately is was pretty crippled and I could not enable developer options (needed a password), so I couldnt get a full idea of how it looks hidden.
having said that, it really doesnt look as bad as it does in pictures online. however, it is still big.
It is not so visible on home screen if you use a dark wallpaper. Some apps hide it automagically, which keeps the status icons on the top, which is exactly how I wish it would be when hidden. I will probably make a photoshop overlay for wallpapers that will hide the notch with status up high, as I dont really use the live walls or anything like that, though I think devs will figure out a way to do that as well.
Viewing pics and video full screen it (the notch) will bother me very much.
Unfortunately the phone had no internet or cell signal, and of course connectivity settings were not available.
The screen to me is a HUGE improvement over the 2XL it looks fantastic. Even the non-XL was very impressive screen wise. Speakers do indeed sound louder, though I could only play the on-board ringtones etc, which still only preview out of one speaker.
Sadly hard to get a full hands on with it being crippled, but I do feel better about pre-ordering it than I did before I checked it out.

I just saw jonathan morison do a youtube review and mentioned this app.....its a great idea and use of the upper screen space. I was wondering if all the notch hiding will cause any screen burn-in.
Just installed Natcho Notch and tried it ... i likes it!

That's what I will be doing when I get mine and at least then I can pick and choose between notch/notchless (not crotchless that's something altogether different lol)
Been using Nacho Notch on my 3xl since I got it on Wednesday. Just turned it off to see if there was any difference in color on a white background. Didn't see a thing. Maybe it will the longer it is used, but my phone screen is pretty much on all night because I leave Netflix running when I fall asleep. I'll learn real quick if it does in fact have burn-in or image retention (OLED screen problem).

I usually watch a show when I go to bed. Half the time I fall asleep and wake up realizing I am a few episodes into a series.
Honestly doesn't bother me much (Well, at least it will until I can get root and install an xposed module that cuts charging off and starts charging again when the battery gets slow, or allow you to change the rate at which the phone charges). I used the module on my Pixel 2 XL and the battery was just as good as it was when I first got it 9 months later. Sadly, can't remember the module name, but it makes the chance of reducing your phones battery charge much smaller and livable with.
