Pixel fusion technology - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Questions & Answers

I read that Huawei P20 pro has got a new technology in its 40MP main camera called pixel fusion technology , it fuses photo data from smaller pixel sizes of the 40 megapixels to create a picture with higher pixel sizes up to 2 micrometer pixel size with quarter the resolution , i.e 10MP.
Firstly, is there anyway our developers can work on extracting this technology or algorithm and porting it Xperia XZ Premium camera so it can produce better images?
Secondly, is there anyway our developers can work on developing better post processing for this camera to improve its algorithm so the pictures can become less noisy or grainy and with better improved details even if by getting these types of algorithms from other devices
or companies?
Thirdly, what are the possible ways up till now and possibly the apps to improve the camera quality of this device and photo quality produced by it.

Optimus 3D a 2d camera of 9 megapixel!!

Hello guys! I was thinking... can be possible in the future with some mod or app in 2d mode to take a picture from all the 2 cameras of the 3d and fix them toghether to have a single shot of something like 5+5 or 9 mpx (considering the loss of correction for the picture angle)?

Its not possible. Its the reason that cameras with ultrafast shutter speeds (10+ pics/sec) don't have near infinite megapixels.

Actually I think it is possible, considering perspective correction and some interlacing (both horizontal and vertical) to join 2x5MP images, it could be done...
In fact, with this idea in mind, it would be more logical to make a 20MPix JPG (using left eye image in odd coordinates for both X and Y, and using the right eye image in even coordinates for both X and Y, filling up the missing pixels with the average color between the 2 source pixels)
But to be honest, I don't think the increase from 5MP to a greater resolution (being that 10 or 20MPix) would gain that much quality or detail, even using both camera sources...

No it wouldnt work. And if it was. And especially on our device if you wanted to use both cameras. because the cameras are offset . It would be mixing one image and another from a slightly different angle. It would look bad.

It isnt - It isn't even possible to make 100 pictures taken at the exact same perspective more detailed.
If it were, cameras that can take 10+ pictures per second would have infinite detail.
The capture chip of cameras cant work like that period.
In your cameras field of view and depending on the amount of sensors on the chip. Aka megapixels

You cant throw a whole "b" image in there and use any fancy algorithm to double the resolution...
Impossible the only way is to have
More images taken next to or around the first and then merge them together...
Lastly if it was possible then you could have ultra mega resolution and you would be able to see molecules. Lol

But it would be possible to decrease the amount of noise in the addition of the two images. Resulting in a better optical resolution. This effect si well known in astronomy since CCD sensors are used.
Some Pc softwares exists allowing an easy combination of slighlty different pictures in order to obtain a better picture.
actually wont it be similar to how hdr shots works???, only difference is we need to make the left and right merge equally into each other
however the only way to get it working is for example if there's an app which can shoot both the front cam and the back cam at the same time, my point is that two profiles need to take a photo at the same time for your idea to work, but I could be totally wrong lol
There are many apps (for example on Iphone) that enable 'higher' resolution.
Ofcourse this is not real but improved quality in comparison with the usual upsampling interpolation.
You dont need two camera's for this. Various methods of increasing resolution as below.
Take two consecutive pictures with one camera. analyse any motion and remove the motion to ensure both images look static. The second image is then placed in each odd area horizontal and vertical
It produces better quality than the averaging interpolation
Its impossible to increase the sensor capability (as this is fixed)
However for video recording, the megapixel amount can be increased. (eg for phones that have camera's that can take still pictures at 5mp but 720p video recording only). its possible to somewhat take successive 5mp images, and compress them (mjpegs perhaps) to reduce complexity. framerate depends on hardware and cpu of the processor.
There was a tool for the ancient mda compact that was able to record using this method. Ofcourse you need to find out if any software like this exists. For optimal performance, the software would need to probably bang the hardware directly for speed.

Photo quality

Compared to the camera of the 3 years old S8+ (my wife's mobile), I find the camera of the A70 very very weak.
takes good pictures in bright light, however, once your light levels get lower the quality is bad (very grainy)
Is there any app one can suggest to use the sensor better? i find the camera modes not using the sensor to full capacity

All the photo apps I have found show the main camera to be 8 mpix, this is due to Samsung using pixel binning which combines 4 pixels into 1 large pixel to try and improve low light pictures. So 32 divided by 4 gives 8 mpix images and all the apps including the gcam apk only see 8 mpix. Even raw mode apps such as light room show 8 mpix and produce around 15 mpix raw images. I have just seen a youtube review of the new xiaomi note 10 with a 108 mpix camera that pixel bins down to 27 mpix but interestingly has the ability to take a full 108 mpix image, although the images are not as good as the pixel binned ones I assume it would allow for full raw images to be taken which could be edited in light room. So the xiaomi is advertised as 108 and has the option for 108 images. The a70 is advertised as 32 with no way to take a 32 image imho this is false advertising, I am not aware of an app that allows pixel binning to be turned off but the xiaomi shows it can be done. What is needed is someone to develop an app to turn it off or like gcam develop the xiaomi camera app to use on other phones including the ability to use the full resolution. If anyone does know how to turn pixel binning off please comment. I do love the phone but the camera is the weakest aspect.
I didn't buy this phone for the camera. The phone was half the price of a Pixel device. The camera is an upgrade over my previous device which has a camera from 2014. I agree the A70 is not even in the same league as the devices that cost more. I recommend using the money saved and buy a standalone camera if you are serious about photography. I can overlook this flaw because I don't take a lot of pictures.

You can use full 32mb mode. In the camera app you see 3:4 , change it to the one that has 3:4H
Well back camera is ok - but front ? ... am I wrong - doesn't it have autofocus ? Is that possible ?

Hi the 3x4h setting produces an 8mb image pixel binned from the 32mb lens, if you check the size of the images they are 4 to 6mb, they should be 4x as big with a 32mb lens. There is currently no way to get a full 32mb image either jpeg or raw, thats why all the camera apps show a max res of 8mb.

When I chose the 3:4H mode in the stock camera I get images with a resolution of 6528x4896 which is 32mp.

Hi, Swizzy, the a70 camera pixel binns at 4 to 1, once the image is taken at 6528x4896 the processing combines 4 pixels to 1 increasing the pixel size to improve low light, this gives a finished image quater the size hence 8mp.
Check the gcam port thread and the comments people made about gcam only showing the main camera as 8mp.
Install gcam 6.2
I use default camera only for ultrawide and to use depht sensor on objects

Camera is not weak, even if is good light. But keep in mind this is mid range. Older S8+ is flagship in which was added the best what was that time. So it's normal that Samsung S8+ maybe doing better photo, how u writing. But I have Samsung A70 and I can say for daily personal usage it is enough good quality and is not a shame to share it for others people, friends. Yes in bad light photo have a little bit noise. Keep in mind and fact that this is not professional camera, noise doing S8+ too. Noise at all is not good thing and with this facing a lot of smartphone and it doesn't matter which status it is: mid range or flagship, but that's why this phone or any newest other (probably, i'm not sure about very cheap mid range) have night mode which doing a little bit better photo as normal mode. Also, maybe my requirements is not so big as yours for camera, but a lot of experts, owners said that this is pretty good camera in generally. Photo is enough detailed and bright if you don't zooming it too much. If say honest strange thing is too take photo and zoom it a lot of at all. I looking into normal photo and don't looking for convergences of pixels, details
I found in youtube S8+ vs A70 camera compare (it is not yours? ), so maybe this will help to see others better and do not trust just yours negative opinion about this phone's camera (without fact that in bad light photo is really not good and have a little bit noises if say softy)

My opinion in this video S8+ doing too colored photo. I like photo in which is real colors, but is not too much bolded. Red looks like creepy red, too much red here as possible to see. That's artificial, not real image. Brightness is enough the same from both models, of course there is some fusions in photo taken with Samsung A70, but these fusions most time is see when you zooming a lot of photo or doing that with camera as I mentioned. Then details is with noise a little bit, But I really don't know where did you found weakness in A70 camera (sounds from you like A70 photo is very bad what is not true my opinion and how I saw from others about this phone ), my opinion as I mentioned A70 doing enough good photo. I'm not professional photographer, but I seeing into phone camera not like in professional device with which you can do very impressive quality photo - even in night or when is bad light, so maybe that's why my strictness is not so big as probably yours. Also keep in mind most mobile camera in bad light doing photo with noise, S8+ is not exception as I mentioned too and S8+ is flagship. So maybe compare S8+ with S9 or better S10???

I disagree. Sony than from afar does not match with Samsung's mid range or Samsung smartphones at all. For example: in my location is selling now Sony Xperia 10 Plus (price 360 euros) and Samsung A70 (price 337 - 350), the same shop, but Samsung A70 different colors have a little bit different prices. So prices is almost the same, right? But let's see what is inside phones:

This is not all specifications, but my opinion most important in smartphone. As you can see in most thing Samsung A70 is much more better as Sony which have biggest price a little bit, but looks much more worst as Samsung. I agree if you want to say that Chinese manufacturers making better smartphone for the same prices, yes i could buy Xiaomi Mi 9T, which in my location from the same shop cost 328 euros. But Xioami Mi9T:
1. Is Chinese smartphone. I have Xiaomi (Amazfit smart watch), so i know how they like to do a lot of bugs in software and how hard to fix it, to present world wide features, but most of them do not add in international versions.
2. Amazfit's, which is part of Xioami, support is very bad, agents looks like assholes from child's garden. But maybe with Xioami this problem is not exit, some saying it different support quality, but after smart watch i don't trust this company anymore. Even when is a lot of bugs in watch and so hard they fixing it.
3. Ahem, no. Just no.
I agree with all who say that photo quality is terrible. I had an S8, the pictures taken with that looked very good out of the box. The picture processing on the A70 is just awful:
-It oversharpens way too much, especially in low light, the sharpening halos are painful to look at
-It does overly aggressive noise reduction which results in a serious lack of detail. Even by just zooming in a little bit it becomes clear that however the image looks "sharp" in 0% magnification there are literally no details captured as they are killed by the noise reduction
One other thing I don't really understand, is that the standard camera resolution is 4032x3024=12,1k=12 Megapixels. How can it be 12 megapixels, if the quad-bayer arrangement should result in 32/4=8 Megapixels, as the Gcam records in? If somebody could explain this i would be really happy.
I actually compared the photos from the A70 with my old (still working good) galaxy s5, and i was shocked, as in many scenarios the S5 actually produced much more detailed and vibrant pictures. That's when I decided to try the GCAM. I'm so happy right now, as this actually brings up the A70 camera quality to the level of the Galaxy s8 which I had previously as a company phone. With the GCAM the pictures are looking flagship-camera like with details properly captured, white balance is spot on (stock camera messes that up too, it takes too warm pictures almost in all scenarios), and the dynamic range is excellent too. And most importantly, there is no hideous oversharpening going on with the GCAM.

this is an awful phone, awful camera quality, (because of an awful sensor)
no software support, one ui 1.0 is far worse than its rivals.
they marketed the one ui 2.0 and android 10 updates, but they are constantly postponed... to an unknown date...
because the lier company is busy with releasing other crap phones (like the a71, 51 vsvs)
they do not have any respect to the old customers, they just flood market
by flood marketing, every 3-4 months they release 3-4 new crap models, they are almost the same hardware as the older models.
they have many marketing lies, and they hope to fool more new customers by these marketing lies.

I was hoping they would do something via updates - but no.
I love the screen, size is great for me. Performance is good for my use, battery good. In screen finger print sensor is sub par but I can put up with it.
But the camera - oh dear - it's not as if the phone is a cheap and nasty phone - but the pictures it takes look like it is....
In most respects it's the best phone I have ever had (I don't do flag ships) - but they camera!!

I posted an article on samsung community with pictures to compare the stock cam to gcam in lower light conditions. Also, I explain how the 32 megapixel sensor ends up shooting 12 MPG photos with "pixel binning". Let me quickly sum that up here as more people were asking this:
The 32MP camera is used in pixel binning mode, that results in a 8 MP shot (4 pixels are grouped as 1), AND the software actually UPSCALES that 8 MP shot to 12 by basically stretching the image with some AI quality retain helping process. What the actual hell. So yeah. Basically this phone takes 8 megapixel photos, which are then enlarged to 12.
I would have never thought that samsung would pull something as cheap as this on their customers. I'm now at a point that I'm going to use this phone for now, as it was basically free when I joined a phone fleet, but when it will come to my money, I will never opt for a samsung again. This is a shame btw, as the phone itself is not bad actually. Screen is epic, the battery is killer, and oneUI is actually very good, seems quite fluent and polished. Unfortunately the photo quality is not only bad thing (WIFI download speed is sluggish, touchscreen has sensitivity and touch registering issues, and fingerprint sensor is very unreliable), but the most ridiculous is the camera by far.

OP7 vs p30 - IQ of main camera only

Hi there,
I was wondering if anybody had the chance to directly compare p30 and OP7, as most of the available info are for the 'pro' models only.
According to the reviews p30 should be clearly superior in the camera compartment overall, but I am not very interested in videos, selfies, zoom, portrait, wide angle, fancy night modes etc.
Rather, I would like to find out about basic image quality and reliability of the main camera only (autofocus, details, color accuracy, dynamic range…).
Putting together some hints taken from various sources it seems that OP7 could be not so poorer in this specific contest. Or no? Thanks
From my perspective I think the camera is doing ok. I'm not big into photos I use it for the basic stuff.
one thing to keep in mind with camera on phones, the camera app itself can make dramatic differences. the oneplus 7 has a sony sensor 48mp, and the p30 is a 40mp sensor. That being said, the p30 is a triple camera, and the oneplus 7 is only dual. This would boil down to what your needs in a camera are, as the oneplus doesn't have the telephoto and ultrawide capability.
I would look for example photos with both phones, using their default camera, and also using the google pixel camera app, which is known to produce much better results.

Question could anyone share a few dng files?

Without HDR or any multiframe nonsense. Just the main camera, base ISO. I have seen good photos from the S21, but so far the ones from the S22 don't look that good.
Kind of worried my old P30 Pro produces more detail at a higher resoultion. Maybe I should sit this one out.
It seems that the slow Expert Raw app produces DNG files with artifacts due to over sharpening. While the normal camera app produces clean but slightly softer dngs.
No phone is perfect at launch. I remember the S21 Ultra launch, I got the phone since day one and in less than 3 weeks Samsung pushed about 5 updates/patches that included, among other stuff, camera enhancements. Can't judge the S22 Ultra just yet
How is that relevant if a so called "expert" app creates over-sharpened raw files that need to be reduced in size to hide the artifacts while the normal app produces pure raws and is even faster in doing so.
I doubt the s21 raw output changed with updates.
That's not update/patch territory, that's bad decisions in creating the so called expert app. On par with misleading customers with digital zoom and interpolated megapixel specs.

I have had two old Samsungs (A5 and S8), and they have "old" 12mp cameras...and I have been thinking that nowadays, that's 5 years later, cameras had gotten amazing and I would buy myself one of those, reading about your device the pixel pro 7, about the iPhone, the xiaomi mi11 ultra, the honour magic 4 ultimate, the S22 ultra, the iPhone 14 etc...
I went mad when I read about affordable 48mp, even 64mp and 108 mp cameras that are affordable...and completely puzzled when I read the reviews. Only to end up comparing my own shots to the sample images I could find online, understanding that to my knowledge those cameras produce plain 12mp at all, and any attempt to enlarge them to the claimed say 64 or 108mp size will just give me an unusable image with atrocious quality, whatever the phone.
Then I found about this tool that lets you compare cameras for real after I had read the complete commercial nonsense fuelled reviews online:

see for yourselves how supposedly camera of the year doesn't look 1200€ less cheap than my S8...it is just amazing...no phone really beats others, even old phones...it's all low-quality 12Mp jpegs, that's about not an even decent 8mp jpeg...
And I wanted to buy one because I photoshop for a living, and last camera I had was around 2005, it produced good 8mp raw images, so I could make them great quality material for photo-montages, and therefore produce prints that'd be larger than A4.
It seems I wouldn't even be able to do that with nowadays top-level smartphones that claim they offer 108Mp...and I'm asking because the online info, or basic science, about it online is just misleading.
Please, I would love your own feeling-experience with your device that is supposed to bear awesome 50mp cameras, rather than trust anything that was posted online from reviews to camera samples that could be anything. When they say 50mp, the quality of raw files is the one of average enlarged 8-12mp compressed jpegs, or not ?

You get way better pictures on newer phones.
The only time you might see similar results are with perfect lighting.

Its one of the few things that actually evolve on phones.
I've had Xiaomi phones with 'AMAZING MEGAPIXELS'.
Its never amazing.
In low light they are so bad compared to flagships from Sony, Samsung and Google.
thank you you summed it up, I couldn't find any info anywhere behind the advertising techniques, I wonder if I can get pro quality , that's actual 50mp fine results, for using it professionally, so I'll be waiting for further replies.
Everything they advertise looks like nothing but better looking -less noisy and all - 12mp jpegs at all, plus good zooming abilities in a few cases, but not as the name suggests, high end pro cameras at all.

None, get yourself a DSLR or a mirrorless camera if you need "accurate" colors. All of the phones have their own way of post-processing the photos and almost none of them result in accurate colors.

If you're talking about RAW, not none of the OEMs offer non-binned images in RAW. You always get the binned output even when shooting RAW photos.

thank you, yes from the advertisement or product description, one hopes for a say 108 mp good quality camera, that will offer you PLENTY of sharp details in every photograph, like...can zoom anywhere and get a new A4 to exploit. And I'm very disappointed...

There are some really good YT Vids comparing phone cameras.
Marques Brownlee did a few really involved comparisons of various modes and features of the newest phones. The Pixel Devices, 6 Pro, 6A and 7 Pro were the top picks

check the comparison tool link I posted in the first post. Recent Xiaomi phones seem interesting regarding colour fidelity.
but anyway it relies on the ambient light as you shoot too , an app like Color Grabber may help

I get that, but this is a phone first, not a camera and you're not going to get everything you would with an actual camera, at least at this point, although Phone cameras have come a long, long way.
I think people need to be reminded this is a communications device, primarily.
The point of the videos is that those things are taken into consideration in the comparisons.
The sensor is 48 MP, but it blends groups of 4 pixels together resulting in a 12 MP image. You can't blow the image up and recover those additional pixels.

Thank you very much because everything online is VERY misleading, regarding 500 - 1500 euros investments.
I am flabbergasted because the ads and product descriptions pretend it's 50mp or more pro cameras, and they happen to be plain okay (not even but...) 12mp digicams. Nothing worth spending 1500 euros it seems. I just expected I could invest like 800 and get a pro camera too that would just let me shoot a photo, get awesome 50mp quality, zoom on the raw file and get another A4 size good cropped shot etc...on top of the disappointment, the misleading info and product description is truly disgusting

The same sensor does produce 50mp images on other phones so presumably it is handled by software, personally I don't think Google will allow it.
It's definitely a software thing as my OnePlus 9's stock camera software does enable you to disable the pixel binning and take a full 50MP photo. The results are pretty terrible though because OnePlus' camera just leaves a lot to be desired.
Yes ! it's all about that, and about the availability of non-binned therefore 48mp or more images online for comparison, it took me ages to find only one of those from a Xiaomi 12s phone, so the actual quality of the camera is actually visible !!! (and not that great !) although the Xiaomi 12t pro and maybe 12s ultra are the best ones I've found so far.
The thing is they show 12mp shots shrunk to our phones' dimensions, or as a shrunk jpeg so that looks good, but that's nothing like the actual camera"s quality that only gets visible on those original non-binned shots, that's a pic that's about an iMac's screen size and it seems very little progress has occurred in five years, the best cam gives okay to good enough results in daylight but that goes with manual retouching. Unless someone proves me wrong...
Personally i don't see what the fuss is about, 12.5mp is more than adequate for printing even at A3 and as they say the best camera is the one you have in your hand, the megapixel myth seems alive and well.
My first DSLR was only 8MP and i did plenty of (paid) weddings and air shows with that.
