UK TA-1050 Update issues - Nokia 6.1 (2018) Guides, News, & Discussion

Right. I am not letting this go! Been on at Nokia for a couple of weeks now and still getting nowhere.
These are what they have asked me to try so far (No success)
I am on Vodafone and my spare Sim is BTMobile (on EE) and the phone purchased from Carphone Warehouse
these are from Nokia "Support"
"First, please go to Settings >> Applications/Apps & Notifications >> (Show all) Three dots on the top-right >> Show System >> Carrier Services >> Storage >> Cache and tap to clear it.
Then, remove any SIM Cards on your device and shut down your device (Long press the Power Button >> Power Off).
Wait for about 15 minutes, then turn on your device without the SIM Card.
10 minutes after it loads, please connect to a stable Wi-Fi Connection and check for your System Updates by going to Settings >> About Phone >> System Updates.
Should this not work, please go back to step 2, but on step 3, please insert a SIM Card from a different Network Operator and proceed to step 4."
No change.
Then today I got this nugget to try.
Please be informed, that usually receiving the update takes some time. You could however try the following things:
Make sure you have pressed Request OTA in the Beta Labs website;
Also try the following options:
Remove your SIM card;
Settings -> Apps -> Google play services -> Disable;
Settings -> Apps -> Google play services -> Enable;
Settings -> Apps -> Google play services -> Force stop;
Settings -> Apps -> Google play services -> Storage -> Clear data / Clear cache.
After these steps please restart the device.
No joy.
Read somewhere that someone with an O2 sim got an update through.
Poor poor service

BEst reply ever to an update issue
"We are sorry about inconvenience, we understand your disappoint and would like you know that we are working in the new Security Pack and in the next update you will be able to do."
Can someone tell me what the hell that says? To sort out the update the next update will sort it.? I cant effin update!!!!!!!!!!!

This is what project treble have to say about the matter of updates.
NEed another phone I think as this is really winding me up now.

Still haven't received any updates since May getting annoying now Nokia are getting like Motorola/Lenovo.
Update: i am now on the latest July update thanks to a user on Nokia 6.1 forums. What I did:
Phone - Nokia 6.1 from Carphone Warehouse UK, Sim Free with Vodafone sim. Was stuck on May 2018 patch level.
(I downloaded VPN Melon)
Popped Sim out, factory reset with sim out. Didn't restore device from previous google backup, logged into my google account. Jumped to Play Store, disabled any automatic update/download of any app. Immediately downloaded VPN Melon, connected to USA. Went to settings / check for update. Installed update (June 2018)
Update required phone reboot. Rebooted. Immediately went to Play store, stopped any auto update. Went to VPN Melon, connected to USA. Went to settings, check for update. Installed update (July 2018).
Rebooted ... did same as above. No update available. Factory reset phone, pushed in sim card when it rebooted, restored google account from previous backup, all good.

Nice work.
July is just installing on mine now. I haven't had mine a week yet!
When I first started setting it up, it did the automatic update to the May patch but like everyone else that's as far as it went.
Only just got the SIM for it this morning (old one was a Tesco Mobile Micro that wouldn't fit) so wiping and starting again isn't a problem.
Just a shame we have to resort to 'sneaky' tactics to update

its a shame that we have to that but its only why we can update our devices iv asked Nokia about it updates and they keep saying BS that the network carriers are at fault.

Yep. Confirming this works. Whoever found it my thanks. Told Nokia how we are all updating using this method and the only reply was "anything else we can help you with"
Utter spherical objects ?

Is it really worth having to reset your mobile to factory settings just to get a system update?

I can also confirm this works.
Is it ok to have USA firmware on a UK device? I was also wondering if now we're on July, we might just auto get the future updates now? Maybe May was bugged?

HEard from two seperate sources now (people I would trust to know too) that it is how Nokia have setup their updates that's to blame. Project treble means that the carriers have very little input into any updates especially with sim free phones. The worry is that the people who could sort it in Nokia probably don't know as Nokia care have continuously been quoting from the script to be patient, blame the carrier or the country your in and fob you off.
HMD really have dragged a solid name down with how they have handled the TA-1050 issue.

I'd had mine less than a week before finding this, and also did a basic setup from new as I hadn't got SIM so doing a factory reset wasn't a problem as there was nothing important on it.
I would be a pain if this has to be done each time an update comes out, but as the poster I commented on did the updates then restored a backup without apparent problems it may no be so bad. Only time will tell

I'm hoping a fix for this was built into the July patch. Not sure I will bother resetting my phone every month.

So far I haven't had any issues.
Hopefully the next update will work as its supposed to and eliminate any potential problems.
I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks or so.

Sorry I couldn't tell you.
Apart from regular updates of Lineage OS 14 on my previous Nexus 5, I've not bothered much with updates as they were few and far between.
I will say that this Nokia will be the first phone I've had in years that I won't be messing about rooting, custom ROMs etc. I'll be leaving it completely stock with the exception of a different launcher (Nova) and icon set

The release date on the July patch was July 5th. I got it the end of last week. The previous June patch was about the same. I am not sure if they are rolling releases or if it is Nokia taking a bit of time to ensure the patch from Google does not interfere with normal operation of their Android One phones before release. In either case, I am just glad to be getting monthly security patches. This is my first smartphone to ever get monthly updates. I have owned phones from Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and LG. None of those companies was very good at releasing updates. Certainly not monthly updates. I hope the issue with your updates gets fixed. I suspect it is your carrier that is the issue, not Nokia. If it was Nokia we would all be having the problem.

I don't think it's to do with the carrier. I'm not sure. Just hope we auto get Augusts update.

I think Nokia are updating our phones to Android P this month.

Requesting DDL Upload Link to OTA files
In another thread, some genius is proactively uploading links to the OTA update files for the old Nokia 6 TA-1025. The thread is right up to date with the July 2018 patch. If someone could do the same for the TA-1050 there would be an awful lot of very grateful Nokia 6.1 owners. There is a huge thread on the Nokia forums complaining about this issue since May. My phone is stuck on the May patch, and I don't want to factory reset and use VPN as the reset process stuffs up the authorisation on my banking app. US owners are clearly receiving timely updates, so the OTA files must be available on the googleapis server, it just needs someone with the knowhow to point us less talented guys to the ZIP files. At least sideloading from an SD card is a process most users can accomplish. Thanks to anyone who can help with this...:fingers-crossed:

The problem is there are three different firmware variants for July, A, B, and E. The phone's with the E firmware when brilliantly, almost all reported issues such as crashes, reboots, temporarily dead devices etc are related to those with A and B firmware.
This is an Android One device, yet monthly updates come at the end of the month. The Nokia 6, a non-Android One device gets the month's update shortly after the release from Google. No matter what some people do, including the process outlined with the VPN, with genuine store bought devices (not grey market imports), they are stuck on June update. Again, A and B variant firmware. Ironically those with the grey import model TA-1068 are much better off with a phone that works and updates. This is the 4GB RAM model.
This device is meant to get Android 9 in a timely manner, as well as Android 10. It is also meant to get at least 31 more months of security updates in a timely manner, which I doubt since they can't get them out in a timely manner now. Will they still update it as promised by the time the 2019 and 2020 models, all requiring updates, are released? Evidence suggests they won't be able to.

Phone doesn't check for app updates

Hello,
I have Lumia 800 (unbranded developer gift, Tango firmware). I think that the phone checks for apps updates very very rare. I didn't see any notifications for a couple of months and forced all my apps to update only manually some days or even weeks after the update is released. Is it a WP7 or Lumia bug? Is there any way to force the phone to check all apps for updates? I'm very disappointed 'cause iPhone notifies about updates very quickly.

I have a 1st gen device (Samy Focus) and after mango update, my unpdates notifications doesn't work anymore. The only way i found to fix this is making a hard reset. But first of all, i made a full backup with the hx4700 Killer's method, then i made a hard reset, and i restore the update. Now the app's update notifications is working again (my phone have tango update and the notifications still working). Hope this helps.
I had this problem on my Ttan too.
Solution:
remove Market Live Tile from homescreen
reboot phone
add Market Live Tile to homescreen and it does work

[Q] "Your system is up to date." No It Isn't! What can I do?

My Shield Tablet recently notified me of the Lollipop 5.1 update. It's not rooted, and not modified. I could download it at the time due to a bad connection, so I paused it. When it resumed later and completed, I tapped to flash and it took me to the System Updates screen, where it told me "Your system is up to date." This is all I can get from it, even when I choose to reset the update data. I know the update didn't install, and when I check the software version, it's reported as 5.0.1.
Is there anything I can do?
I have the same problem. Did you get it sorted? Did a factory reset and still no joy. Says I'm on 5.01 and system is up to date. Annoying
You can try to force method by clearing data from Google Services Framework and close it, then check for update. It might work after quite a few attempts.
Else just flash the update manually: http://forum.xda-developers.com/shi...rial-how-to-debloat-optimize-ota-3-0-t3118187
Word is they've shut off the update server while they investigate some device breaking bugs in the new update. People reporting Speaker destruction due to the update.

Help needed here!!!!

Days before I bought a second hand Oneplus Two phone, and the seller reset the phone before posting.
Now the situation is Google keeping asking me to verify the account, but even the seller give his account information to me I still cannot verify account successfully.
Every time when I input the account password or Google security code and click NEXT, the system will jump back to the very beginning step automatically -- I tried and failed dozens of times already!
Who can tell me what I should do to verify the device? The seller is very nice, he will offer me all personal information abt his former Google account.

there is no magic fix.
if the device ever had a 5.0 build on it, and is capable of being flashed back to it, the security will be gone thats asking for the password.
other than that, there is no fix other than getting it to take the correct password/etc.
this new security is great. problem is, no one knows about it. if you remove the accounts from the device before factory resetting, this security wont be activated.

I think the carriers and Google didn't do enough awareness about FRP.....
XDA will be flooded with these issues very soon.

there have been a good bit of of post on it so far. it started with 5.1, and as time progresses, as with devices that shipped with 5.1 or newer, there will be no back door.

Apps and System auto-updates not working

By months my 3a won't automatically update itself even with update/download "over any network", I have already tried to restore and wipe from recovery but still unresolved.
Does anyone noticed this issue?
I tried waiting almost one month without system (monthly patch) and apps (all pending) updates popup.
Google support after few attempts, just proposed me a warranty replacement but the phone otherwise is perfect.
Manual updates works.
Any tips?
TY
I had the same issue back in January and didn't get a system update well into April. So I had to manually update. Still haven't gotten the May update yet, but we'll see.
Also with the apps?
If you have an unlocked bootloader, I would not count on automatic monthly updates. They work sometimes, but not most of the time. My personal experience is that I have to sideload the monthly updates about 90% of the time.
As far as app updates, I generally manually check it every couple of days and find that there are pending updates. I will hit the "update" button and manually update them if I see pending updates. That being said, if I don't check it for a while (maybe a week), the phone will eventually update the apps, but it certainly doesn't happen on a daily basis, at least not in my experience. I just wanted to add my experiences as they seem to be very similar to yours.

Having an unlocked bootloader, too, but I never had issues with updates until now, they are coming directly at the first day Google is sending out the OTA.
I wonder if our phone service provider is also a factor? I have not been seeing the updates available within a day or two of when they are posted on the first Monday of the month. I get my phone service through a T-mobile MVNO. Maybe people on Google Fi are more likely to get it OTA quickly?
My phone is rooted with Magisk.
But I'm impatient so I have always just applied the update manually. It's a bit more of a pain because it means that I have to download not only the update but also the factory image to extract the boot image file and patch it with Magisk.
I have not had a problem installing updates for apps through play. I just have to remember to NOT update youtube so that I don't lose youtube vanced!
Hi all and thanks for your time!
I have a good news.
After avoid to do any manual update, right now I see that few apps have been updated themself from 11 hr and 2 days ago, but other 22 apps are still pending (when I wrote here the 6th May they were 40).
Around the 23th of Feb I had to do manual update search because it still was with Jan patch, even in March and April I did the manual search the week after the day 5th.
My phone is not rooted and during the day it uses both cellular and WiFi networks, mostly of the nights I put it in airplane mode and battery save (so it lasts easily for 2 days).
The cause was because I put all the nights the phone in airplane mode with battery saver, last night I leave it connected to WiFi and under charge, this morning I found the advice to reboot for install the system patch and after boot also the apps were updated.
The system patch has been found around 4 am.
I'm having a similar issue with my rooted 3a. I have stock rom, elemental kernel, and magisk. But apps that came installed as part of the ohone won't update in Google play. Stuff like phone, contacts, sim carrier, Gmail, camera, etc
There's literally about 20 updates right now that won't install. They download, and say installing, then they just skip to the next and still say there's an available update. After the final one is tried, I get a message saying that it was unable to update those apps.
Any app that I downloaded from play or as an apk, allows me to update without any issue at all.
I have googled it and followed the recommendations, but so far, nothing has helped. I cleaned the cache, hard reboots, switch update settings, turned off play protect, deleted cache and data of play store and play services. Removed my account and added it bad. And have some a few more things that I read about -- but yet nothing fixes it.
If I should start a new thread, that's no problem. I don't want to hijack this one. But saw that it dealt with update issues and thought maybe I would see if I could find help.

Can fishy email images effect android devices?

Hi Guys,
I got a strange email in my emails, when looking at the email from / to it looked spoofed and I was about to click back but I accidentally clicked 'Download images', the ones that are usually blocked when opening an email, not actual attachments. Can JPEGs etc... contain anything malicious?
I factory reset my phone after that happened but that didn't stop my getting 3 calls from Africa this morning, 2 within one minute.

They can, eg Stagefright or later in 2016 this
https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2016/09/06/google-android-one-photo-hack/
or just last year
https://www.komando.com/security-pr...e-over-an-android-phone-with-an-image/543634/
which you phone may be vulnerable to if not still getting regular updates
and just this month patch also has media framework bug allowing possible escalation of privileges
https://9to5google.com/2020/06/01/pixel-june-20-security-patch/
however it could just be a coincidence you got a storm call, they just use computers to call from a number list or random numbers.
A factory reset may not get rid of malware that has been able to install itself in the system partition. You need to reflash the full factory image again. Or if your phone not getting updates any more from manufacturer you should ALSO flash a trusted custom rom ie Lineage OS from official source (hopefully there is one for your EXACT model) after you have clean flashed the most recent manufacturer ROM.
I use Android 10 with security patch from April.
Would I be right in assuming that the phone needs to be rooted for anything to be installed on the system partition? I don't have mine rooted.
Last time I reflashed a device, even with official firmware it stopped me getting updates.
It is quite annoying since pretty much everybody keeps saying it is safe to open a spam email as long as a link is not clicked or attachment downloaded but that appears to be rubbish since the images rendering within an email seem to be enough for a phone to be hijacked.

You should be pretty much covered for known security issues as you are on April security patch. Though there are of course likely be other unpublished vulnerabilities. You can try submit suspect images to virustotal.com see if it's already known.
Unfortunately malware can install into system partition even if you have not rooted your phone in some cases eg if vulnerability is in already privileged process. (note: I'm not security expert)
Given you are pretty much up to date with known patches I think the phone calls likely just a coincidence, unless you have more indications of hacked phone or other accounts etc.
Edit: PS even if those images were malicious you may be OK as you have recent security patch so they might not have been able to compromise your phone.

Strange thing is Tuesday night before this, I got a reset password email for Netflix... i didn't think too much of it and don't know why they would do that.
That is before Thursday when I accidentally opened a spam mail then later on Thursday got a few calls from an African Number.
Then today I got 3 password reset emails from my other email account, of course the reset requests went to my email.
Microsoft really suck too because I cannot get on my email account from a browser since when I put my phone number in it says, try again later. I am already logged in through the app though.

so many reset password requests suggests something is going on, possibly your phone but maybe more likely just one of your online accounts passwords leaked, there were a couple of big ones recently, check haveibeenpwnd or is it just that you reset your phone?
Yeah, I always need to change my browser to old IE to log in to MS cause of my settings/addons

Well I got myself an Iphone SE for now, heard that they are sandboxed as long as they are not jailbroken.. however I removed the native mail app since that has a vulnerability now which is quite famous.
I know it iPhone is a bit of a swear word around here, but it is the best option until re-installing the OS on Xioami mi 8 pro.
Hopefully there is a way to set mi 8 into recovery without using third party tools, XZ1 had a feature to re-install android but that was pretty rare. It is a shame the storage space is so awful on it or I wouldn't have wanted to change phone
