Still good? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

I don't like paying top dollar for latest phone. Currently using S7. Would the Pixel still be a good phone to use in mid 2018? I thought about pixel 2 but want headphone jack.
How much longer will original pixel be updated?
Thanks, any feedback or recommendation would be great.
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

It's still a decent phone. The only issue is guaranteed software updates end in October of this year, so technically Android P might be the last it gets. Security updates are till October 2019.
I suspect Google may try to deliver a "9.1" update to Pixel but 10 is unlikely. I guess you need to decide how bothered you are about getting the latest and greatest software.

If you have a s7 that's still good, no use in getting a pixel unless you wanna feel like you downgraded, unless your intentions were getting twrp

The pixel is still a great buy. You can get it for a reasonable price (under $200) and it still gets OTA updates.
Maybe I'm one in a million, but I prefer RR because Google's OTA updates are lacking in features. Very barebones in comparison to other phones and ROMs I've used, but I imagine most people prefer that.

Pixel has mic hardware issues. Supposedly resolved in phones manufacturered after Jan 17 but it pops up now and again. I'm going to request for my 2nd rma for this problem.
Go for the pixel 2 is my take

Marshmallow update for MotoX Syle (Pure) 2015

Everyone don't wet it! The update will contain Band 12 VoLTE and E911. VoIT is in question? I got this info from higher tech support. Took about 4 days to get official answer. I believe this is the reason why we in the good old of USA haven't received this update sooner! They are working out possible issues with this radio update for marshmallow.
it's been known for at least a week or even more (on g+ post)
I will believe it when it is released.

So you can't wait a while lol? At least we will be able to take advantage of sd card. Oh and the phone is cheaper. Patience is rewarding. My old note4 had its last update in March I think to major software update from 4.4.4 to 5.0.1. 1 month vs many months. I'll take it.

Do plenty of research first. I sent my 6p back because after 4 days of normal use the frame was twisting. It would no longer sit flat. I carried my phone in my front pocket as i have done with all my phones. I also had much worse reception. I constantly dropped to 3g at work whereas with this phone I don't. If on Verizon there is also no visual voicemail so if you have advanced calling enabled you get text messages instead of a notification that you have voicemail periodically. Your mileage may vary but I couldn't wait to be rid of it.
*edit I'll also leave this little gem

If it's that big of a deal, you'd nut up and eat the difference, genius. I at least offered a solution that would get you M quicker than whining about it.
Waiting for the mm update patiently no problem... My moto pure working like champ, love this phone...

Same here.. got the phone.. it's working as it should be.... there are some fixes you can get from the dev sections... not like this phone came out the box broken that MM was going to make it feel like a totally different phone from what I bought...
You know Nexus phones get the updates right away.. so why didn't you just buy the Nexus instead of the MXPE? Sounds like a personal problem...
C'mon, apologists. Waiting a few extra weeks isn't the end of the world for most of us, but it should've been out by now, given Moto's near-stock software design. The fact that it's taking longer to update their brand new, revolutionary, carrier-free flagship than some competitors' heavily-skinned, carrier-variable models is a very bad sign about Lenovo's priorities.
If 11 months from now we're finding out that the MXPE will not be receiving Android N at all, we can probably look back to this episode and say: "you know, we should've seen this coming." I'm enjoying my phone, but I absolutely don't blame anyone for hedging in favor of the 6P despite a few weaknesses (no expandable storage) because of Lenovo's poor showing this past 3-4 weeks.
So, go to the dev section and install MM...

Can you link to where Moto/Lenovo gave the MXPE an exact date of when MM was going to come out? Last I heard they were rollin' it out in phases... and even then, there were no exact dates... if peeps want to spend more on the 6P/Nexus and not worry about delayed updates, then they should have bought it, but yet, they didn't and are complaining about the "slow" updates on the phone(s) they 'decided' to buy instead..
Go to the dev section and install those MM updates posted there if you guys are really that bent on getting MM on your device...
I can wait, nothing in MM that I really want, much less need, anyways...
A few weeks is nothing. We'll get it.
This isn't like the Atrix and ICS, where the phone was out for a fair bit and also canned once google bought Moto. The phone is new. If other regions are getting it first, then that's just how the testing works.
They really don't want a repeat of Lollipop. I heard horror stories on how badly that update botched the 2nd Gen Moto X.

Do those dev section roms include T-Mobile B12 & VoLTE support??? That's what many of us are waiting for. If it was only a matter of wanting MM then yeah, that's a no-brainer, but no way I'm going through all that crap for a rom that doesn't have the T-Mobile support I've been waiting for all along.
From what I can tell there is no band 12 in the Indian mm but doze works ****ing wonders on this phone even completely stock. I'm on modded marshmallow now and will switch to official mm when its released. Simple enough

How long will Nexus 5 receive updates

I've been wanting the N6P, but I'm curious how long Nexus 5 will receive updates. Will it get Android N? If so, I might just wait, even though my camera doesn't focus anymore and that's the main reason I want to upgrade.

I dont think we will officially get Android N... But im pretty sure We will get alot of support by developers so that our device keeps alive!! (look at nexus 4)
Judging by previous devices (N4 and N10), the Nexus 5 might not get Android N. It will however most likely still receive monthly security patches.

I currently own a Nexus 5. For me personally, there isn't enough to sway me towards buying a 5X or 6P right now. Perhaps when official updates are discontinued or if my device develops a fault then I might upgrade.
My Nexus 5 has really impressed me for now. I've had it for two years and it still performs really well. It gallops through Marshmallow like an absolute beast and has served me well. I just hope I can keep it a little bit longer without any issues.

Exactly what I'm thinking. If my camera isn't focusing correctly, is it the lens itself? I know my lens has a few cracks on it.

If the camera isn't focusing correctly in apps other than "Camera" and still persists after a fresh factory reset/image flash, then you can probably assume it is a hardware issue that has developed. Not sure where the physical issue would lie as I'm not too knowledgeable on camera optics.

it would be nice to get the update for the December security patch at the very least. we still have a few hours to go before December ends. OP did this with Nougat and Xiaomi just updated the Mi A1. HTC might surprise us, just with the phone deliveries.

Hehe still having hope. One reason for not buying HTC was this, no updates. Finally I bought it because I think it's one of the best phones this year.
But a phone with no support is not good, like you said still in October security patch. That's not good for a new phone. That's one reason to change this phone. A powerful one.
I knew this would happen. Im glad that I have cancelled the preorder and it seems that I wount be re-ordering. Sadly, sooner or later, you will all realize, that this is just a failed Pixel 2 project and HTC just wanted to get some money back and threw this to the market. There wount be any HDR10 support update (at least a working one) and certainly there wount be any brightness boost to the most dim display ever put to a flagship. Its really sad Im looking forward to buy something useable in April 2018.

I hope you were wrong. Actual pixel 2 XL is a failed pixel with a lot of screen issues like burning screen or blue screen, and so many other problems like sound recording video and well known others.
I think that HTC will update their phones but not as fast as they say or as good as they promised. Anyways I probably will change this phone in 2018.

That's a fact. But with or without hdr.. This thing is a amazing beast.
So true about that display I compared it to a V30 in store and theyre world's apart!
Phone is boss though all-round, I'm just worried about after sales support at the minute. If this phone runs into issues after the next 5 days (return window) then I'm into the waiting list of 3 months + without a phone, which would leave me kicking myself.
Currently on October patch too - UK. That's shocking. And who's to say we're even going to get one?
In two minds wether to return this and buy a supported device such as a Pixel 2 XL and sacrifice screen, or hold on to this beast and cross my fingers nothing goes wrong with it.

I'm worried about support of this phone too. Still in October patch and we are in 2018 now. I took this one instead pixel 2 XL mostly because screen issues of the pixel. Now I'm regretting it.
The camera is good but not as good as expected. No portrait mode or anything similar, also photos are a bit underexposed, a bit dissapointed with camera and max brightness.
So I'm waiting the HDR10 update to see if this can fix something with this phone, otherwise I will sell this and I will take a pixel.

My advice. Hold on to this beast! Updates will follow. Probably after the completion of the global U11 OREO update. HTC is a little busy these days. Service should not be a problem. When having problems contact htc directly.
The phone is not yet available in all Europe, let's wait and see what HTC will do. So far i'm enjoying it. I don't care about the HDR10 update, but they need to update the security patch, and minors tweaks on the camera.

I think camera need a big update. It's just correct but not the camera it is supposed to be. I will say that u11 normal has better camera than this, it has lot of noise in low light and low detail in general. Video it's just OK, but not awesome. If they manage to upgrade the camera can be one of the top 3, it has potential to it.
I've compared the cameras of the U11 plus with the U11. And yes you are right. I did see some difference between them. Hardware is the same so I believe they will fix it with the first update. But... The frontcam of the U11 plus is better.

Sad but not unexpected. They said they will be releasing source code on Github, let's hope its enough to keep software updates going.

Yeah its definitely not surprising. They're not selling anything and haven't for a while, and when they were, they were not selling enough, or selling at too low of prices. Its not a great business strategy. I'm just sad that there will never be another software update, guess itll be time to move on to lineage.

Problem I had, was with the signal (or lack of). I use straight talk (tracfone) and places where I had a good
signal with my previous phone, I had no signal. Even with my OnePlus 6T, I had signal, and with the PH-1
I had no signal. Other than that, I never really had any issues, so It's in the drawer and an emergency phone.
Damn! Love this phone, never had any issues eg signal strength. I even care to prefer the more natural colours of it's native camera for outdoor photos in good light to Gcam!

R. I. P. Essential
I picked up a pixel 4xl from TMobile today. For a phone that got knocked as hard as the essential did at its released price, hopefully this pixel serves well at $499. 40 days until unlock. No matter; I'll put my Adguard lifetime license key on it and see how that goes until then.
The Essential was just feeling like it wasn't built for Android 10. I stayed on Nougat for a long time. Was briefly on Oreo before jumping on 10 when it went official. Battery and function were fine until 10. One Magisk mod I was running, thinking it was helping got attacked by a well-known kernel developer today.
So maybe open sourced development is what I and this phone really needed? I didn't try a kernel. Best wishes for those sticking with this phone. I hope the Essential gets developed well with the source code that Essential surrendering going out the door.

[Sept 8] Android 11 Stable Released Today

Now that Android 11 has been released today (9/8) for the Pixel series, what kind of timeline can we expect to see for OOS11 implementation from OnePlus for the OnePlus 7 Pro? Apparently the 8 series will get android R first but we are right behind them so I have fingers crossed for a swift release
according to the oneplus tables, the 7pro should receive android 11 no earlier than November / December
Inviato dal mio OnePlus 7 Pro utilizzando Tapatalk
OB for OP7 Series will be only after Stable release on OP8 Series. And Stable release will be not Earlier December. But as for me, I prefer OOS 10 over OOS 11.
Can you imagine paying 800€ for a flagship only to be treated like a second class citizen only one year later? Yeah, screw OnePlus never buying anything by these crooks ever again.

I am going to hazard a guess and say probably the end of the year or beginning of next. I've been rocking stable oos for the last 8 months myself and haven't even test driven 11. It's kinda hard to believe that I'm the same person who used to crack-flash anything remotely interesting and even when i loved a Rom i couldn't stay on it for more than two weeks because I felt like i was missing something. This phone has been so glitch free me on 10 that i didn't realize 11 was here.

My point exactly. I was being sarcastic.
Just waiting AOSP 11 ROMs... OOS11 sadly are not a nice option. I don't want to transform my OP device in a Samsung looks like device.
Thankfully with unlocked bootloaders, we can install custom ROMs and maintain the stock Android look. OxygenOS 11 looks like a less refined One UI skin and a disappointment for those who bought a OnePlus device for a near stock experience. Still I know a stock rom will help with kernels and overall stability.
