Backing up external SD card to Google Photos - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

I'm looking at getting a Pixel, and I've read that Google allows photos backed *from* the Pixel to Google photos for free. Is this still the case? If so, is it just plug in and go? I've tried on my 5X and it won't see the SD card. Do I have to copy to the Pixel first? Just asking before I buy, thanks for your time.

The unlimited backup to google photos is only for the photos clicked using pixel phone.
Even if you copy photos using pc into pixel. If you upload photos clicked from other device, your storage in google drive will be used.

Seems to imply it's photos UPLOADED from the Pixel. I've read that from CNet or the Verge too but I can't seem to find the article. Reddit guy seems to say copy to phone then let it upload.

It works for me and doesn't go against my Google Drive storage.
I have only been able to get it to work if I actually transfer the files to my Pixel. If I try to let Photos upload straight off a usb drive plugged into my Pixel, it doesn't see them.

Here , i've backed up all my photos taken with my "nexus5 Sony Xperia p , Nikon D3300 , .. etc i have almost 10 000 photos on my google photos account and i can see no space used , it's unlimited since you've uploaded them using your pixel , i got the 32 gb model and i struggled since all my photos are about 200 gb . Now i got all my photos backed up , now i'm thinking of backing up real old "paper" photos , i'm scanning them using Photoscan by google . The pixel line up is the best smartphone you can get , i'm in love with the video stabilisation ?

Thanks for correcting me.....i read this from an article on web.
And i thought logically it is correct. This means anyone who have pixel can upload his age old collection easily.
I will also copy my photos to pixel and will upload it.

Thumbnails file is HUGE (1gb)

Hi,
I noticed that my Nexus S has a lot less free SD partition storage after ics update. Found out that the thumbnails file is huge, its over 1gb big. After deleting it now its back to 900mb. Is this a Google joke or something? How can a thumbnails file for a couple of hundred pics be 1 gb big, like 1/3 of the big files!? Is there a way to change this?
if you are on ICS, it's normal
Hmm that's a bad combination. Having no options to expand memory on Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus and at the same time thumbnails taking ridiculous amounts of storage...

No way that it's normal. My imgcache.0 file is 19MB, I have about 900 pictures on the phone (Camera, backgrounds, edited stuff, downloads).

19 MB sounds like a fitting Size. But my thumbnail file is again at 900 MB within one day after deletion of the old file, which is crazy.
nah, i too have 1GB total on combined thumbnails, i do keep a lot of photos in my phone, also take into account the ones for the High Quality Called ID/Contact pictures

Wait, did you just say high quality contact photos? At least when we are talking about the google contacts they are severely downsized and look like retro pixel art when viewing contact details or an incoming call...taking new high res pics doesnt help as it will be downsized again after sync to the google cloud.
Still im really pissed at the face that we are talking gigabytes of data for thumbnails. If i didnt see it myself i wouldnt believe it.

I'm quite sure those aren't saved on the SD card, but in phone internal storage.

You didn't say if you have any Picasa folders or are running Google+ photos sync.

I have a picasa folder with about 20 pics. The rest is stored locally only. No g+sync.

This seems strange. I mean a plain 1980x1200 jpg is around 600kb (I picked a random file from my drive), how can a couple of 200x200 pictures add up to 1GB?

Exactly my thought. This just makes no sense. And it wasn't like this on GB. With Gingerbread I had 1GB more free storage.
Really weird hmm ... I know that the Picasa/Google+ photos (whatever they call it these days now) can add up to used storage, but those thumbnails are stored in a separate folder (com.google.plus), where the gallery thumbnails is in com.google.android.gallery3d.
So basically the imgcache.x file is 1Gb large ? Are there more files ? A screenshot of the folder would be interesting.
Here you go. As you see on the screenshot the file is 870 MB big.

Oh, that's a different thumbnail data file then, the ones I've been talking about were in /sdcard/Android/data/*. But it's still ****ing huge, my same file on this location is 244,2M, that's for 800 Camera pictures.
I have no clue why this file is so big. And deleting doesn't help.
Try disabling the ICS Gallery app via Apps info page, then delete the thumbnail file, if it gets remade again then the Gallery app is the culprit (you can use Quickpic as an alternative).

I just did a quick scan of my sdcard to see if I had any large thumbnails. It turns out that all my thumbnails are normal size(between 10-30k).

For what it's worth, I am running ICS on my Nexus S 4G (CM9 Alpha19) and I don't even have a file in that location...

Hmm very strange. Suddenly the file didn't reappear in my folder too. This has to be an app that creates this file but don't know which one. Its not the regular gallery app though.

Yeah, I've installed pete alfonso's ROM and the thumbnail file wasn't created there.

Photo Question's

Hey Guys,
My Dads moto g only has 8gb memory and storage is nearly full.
Most of the memory is from photos and video. It is running 4.4.4, the photos are backed up to google.
Is it possible somehow to keep the photos on google and delete it from the device to free up some space but still be able to access these photos in the gallery when connected to the internet?
I couldn't locate any option in gallery to see this. I can see the pictures in the photo app also.
I used to have a similar thing working on a old samsung galaxy s2.
I would have added a micro sd card but unfortunately that is not an option on the Moto G.
Many Thanks

Netflix adds downloading ability - with a caveat

Netflix have added the ability to download shows to Android ans iOS devices.
However, there appears to be no way of changing the download location to the SD Card.
Which means that Phone memory will fill up fast.
Shame.
Hopefully in quick time they will add the option. I'm sure a LOT of people will be letting them know of that disappointment.
Probably intentional because the content files would then be easily accessible (by popping the SD card out and into a PC) even without root. Figures.
Also, HD downloads are unavailable on the Moto X Pure. Only SD.

Google Play Movies allows it. So does Amazon Video.
My solution: a fast enough SD card formatted as internal. Now I have tons of space for downloads.

[Completed] Cannot View Certain High-Resolution Photos on Android Marshmallow

Hi, I have been searching through Google extensively regarding a problem my SD card has but I none of them exactly describe my problem.
So I just recently bought a Strontium class 10 32GB card from an online web shop (like eBay) and I've been reading about stuff like SD scamming, but I don't think this is the problem I have since I have already used up 20GB of the alotted 29GB, and I can still access files and media with no problems. I also have issues viewing photos stored in my internal storage, so the problem I just described applies to my external and internal storages.
THE PROBLEM:
I downloaded high resolution photos from Unsplash and all photos appear fine on my laptop. I transferred them to my phone's memory (SD and Internal) and used QuickPic to browse them but I found out that only 50-something of the 99 photos can be viewed. The problematic photos take up space but they don't show the picture when clicked, only a broken thumbnail icon can be seen. I tried to identify the problem by doing: a reboot; ejecting and mounting the SD; formatting the SD; removing files like .nomedia (if this is even related); doing a factory reset; using a different card; and using ES file explorer but I still can't see some of my photos.
USEFUL DETAILS:
The photos that have issues all exceed 5000px in either width or height-- anything below that appears fine. I'm running Marshmallow 6.0, I tried using QuickPic, Google Photos and Sony's stock album app to open the pictures. I downloaded the pictures from the Unsplash website, MySplash (Android app) and Wally (Android app too). Everything from Wally can be viewed (even the mentioned corrupt photos from the Unsplash website) because the app only lets me download the smaller resolution (~778KP from an original of 12MP).
I have tried opening the unviewable photos on a Huawei P9, and I can see the problematic photos. I also tried inserting another SD card with the problematic photos to my phone, and I was still not able to view the photos.
My old no-brand phone had this problem too. It was running Jellybean and I used QuickPic there, too.
My current phone is a Sony Xperia XA Ultra, F3216, the dual-sim version. No custom ROMs, I'm using the stock Marshmallow.
Hi there and welcome to assist,
Unfortunately there is nothing about your question/device on XDA forum. Try a Google search first. Sorry for this late response.
You'll have to create an account to post in the main forums if you have any other questions.
Good luck

Google Photos not working at all in my S8 plus

Hi All,
All of a sudden google photos has stopped working and i can never get it work , i have searched around the net and tried almost all of the solutions, still no go, it wont fetch photos from photos.google.com nor it would back up photos, it gets stuck in "getting photos", sometime it gets past but does not download the photos from cloud.
I tried google photos in my old note 4 and it works great there, so i added google photos in my secure folder of s8 plus and to my surprise it works perfectly in secure folder but from secure folder it is not able to backup photos , i gave up and did a full reset of my phone and unfortunately even after a full reset , still its not working .. WTF!!!!!
i am not sure what is going on, can someone help please
If your pictures are in the sd card DCIM folder move them to internal DCIM folder and try un-mounting the sd card and see if this works. I have to un-mount sd-card everytime I want to backup, I've notified Google of this but they don't seem to care.
Thanks but my pics are only in Internal memory DCIM folder.

It doesn't matter, un-mount your sd card to see if Google Photos starts to find your photos. It will also backup if you have new photos. It happened to me and even after a reset it would get stuck on getting photos.
Wow this definitely worked , but what is the problem though, can i not have the SD card mounted for google photos to work?
Anyone have any workaround for the SD Card issue
