Thumbnails file is HUGE (1gb) - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I noticed that my Nexus S has a lot less free SD partition storage after ics update. Found out that the thumbnails file is huge, its over 1gb big. After deleting it now its back to 900mb. Is this a Google joke or something? How can a thumbnails file for a couple of hundred pics be 1 gb big, like 1/3 of the big files!? Is there a way to change this?

if you are on ICS, it's normal

Hmm that's a bad combination. Having no options to expand memory on Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus and at the same time thumbnails taking ridiculous amounts of storage...

No way that it's normal. My imgcache.0 file is 19MB, I have about 900 pictures on the phone (Camera, backgrounds, edited stuff, downloads).

19 MB sounds like a fitting Size. But my thumbnail file is again at 900 MB within one day after deletion of the old file, which is crazy.

nah, i too have 1GB total on combined thumbnails, i do keep a lot of photos in my phone, also take into account the ones for the High Quality Called ID/Contact pictures

Wait, did you just say high quality contact photos? At least when we are talking about the google contacts they are severely downsized and look like retro pixel art when viewing contact details or an incoming call...taking new high res pics doesnt help as it will be downsized again after sync to the google cloud.
Still im really pissed at the face that we are talking gigabytes of data for thumbnails. If i didnt see it myself i wouldnt believe it.

I'm quite sure those aren't saved on the SD card, but in phone internal storage.

You didn't say if you have any Picasa folders or are running Google+ photos sync.

I have a picasa folder with about 20 pics. The rest is stored locally only. No g+sync.

This seems strange. I mean a plain 1980x1200 jpg is around 600kb (I picked a random file from my drive), how can a couple of 200x200 pictures add up to 1GB?

Exactly my thought. This just makes no sense. And it wasn't like this on GB. With Gingerbread I had 1GB more free storage.

Really weird hmm ... I know that the Picasa/Google+ photos (whatever they call it these days now) can add up to used storage, but those thumbnails are stored in a separate folder (com.google.plus), where the gallery thumbnails is in com.google.android.gallery3d.
So basically the imgcache.x file is 1Gb large ? Are there more files ? A screenshot of the folder would be interesting.

Here you go. As you see on the screenshot the file is 870 MB big.

Oh, that's a different thumbnail data file then, the ones I've been talking about were in /sdcard/Android/data/*. But it's still ****ing huge, my same file on this location is 244,2M, that's for 800 Camera pictures.

I have no clue why this file is so big. And deleting doesn't help.

Try disabling the ICS Gallery app via Apps info page, then delete the thumbnail file, if it gets remade again then the Gallery app is the culprit (you can use Quickpic as an alternative).

I just did a quick scan of my sdcard to see if I had any large thumbnails. It turns out that all my thumbnails are normal size(between 10-30k).

Hmm very strange. Suddenly the file didn't reappear in my folder too. This has to be an app that creates this file but don't know which one. Its not the regular gallery app though.

Yeah, I've installed pete alfonso's ROM and the thumbnail file wasn't created there.

Memory issues?

Is anyone having trouble with pictures deleting or becoming unreadable?
I also had a app uninstall its self....
I have had 1 pic problem and a few SD card errors when I know I have 13gigs free. A retry on the download has helped with the app install though.
I downloaded camera zoom ex and when I take pics, usually the first file is unreadable. One recorded video did that as well. No issues with apps yet, lets hope it doesn't get worse.

I haven't had anything with pictures, but I have had the erroneous "not enough room" error and apps have become broken (cannot launch..) and require an uninstall/reinstall. When this happens, in the list of applications, they don't have the "nice" application name, they have the real? name such as net.hexage.radiant.hd
I had installed a circle battery mod widget from the market and when i went to take a screenshot i got a r/o error. But ever since uinstalling said app its been fine.

The attic is kind of weird when it comes to memory. Im thinking it mounts your external like internal and users the actual internal as internal. You have to get a third party file explorer to even see the internal memory. Kind of blows... But once you get used to it you work around it.

So one of my apps that mysteriously uninstalled itself (but the icon remained) decided to start working again (i never bothered to reinstall it and just left the icon, but then it started working again). Weird.
And yeah, even pictures i took that "stayed" are now corrupt. We have memory issues.

I've noticed that the first picture I take is corrupted, I just have to take multiple pictures and everything turns out fine. I downloaded camera zoom fx and its 10x better than the stock camera app.
Do you find less issues using that app? Can it use the stock camera button?

Loving this app, it has torch mode while taking pics... Helps the night shots a lot. Camera button works and it does a ton more than stock Moto cam app can do
Still having memory issues. Wouldnt save a single picture from my email or internet all day. "download unsuccessful" for web pics or "download failed" for email pics.
Pretty lame.
for those of you with issues, are you installing apps to sd card?
i'm thinking what it's doing is when you use apps2sd, it's mounts sdcard-ext as dynamic on the internal memory, but then redirects all sdcard items to sdcard-ext instead of /sdcard. ie apps2sd moves apps to /sdcard-ext and sizes that partition as needed (say 400mb apps, it sizes at 500mb). you take a pic, it goes to save it, but the system is now directing it to /sdcard-ext instead of /sdcard. it sees that there is only 500mb left and kicks it out or activates the low memory message.
if you're installing apps to the sdcard, turn off the phone, pull the microsd card out and pop it into your computer and see what's on it.
i also think that if you use a microsd card, you forfeit the entire 8gb internal storage.
then again, i could be wrong...
Ive been installing on the internal memory.
Thing is, some stuff saved on the memory card (ie from inet etc) will sometimes just become unreadable. This phone has some caching issues or something.
And judging by all the complaints etc, i doubt its a memory card issue.
ok, i removed my sdcard
storage still reads at 4.77GB internal
when i try to take a pic, it tells me to insert an sdcard.
8gb is a lot of space for apps lol 10k justin beiber fart soundboards
Jusy found this. I thik its basically saying the 8 gigs that are supposed to come built into the phone are already being used. Kinda dumb.... https://motorola-global-portal.cust...71812/~/internal-and-external-memory-(atrix-2)

do you realize how many "talking [insert something stupid here]" apps and "[insert infamous person here] fart sound board" apps there are available?
This damn memory bug is really bothering me... i couldnt save a picture from gmail today to save my life. Failed. Failed. Failed. Cannot load.
I guess i can try a class 4 memory card? I have a 6 now... and with class 10 being out there, seems stupid that this would have issues with anything at all, much less a 6.
Have you tried pulling out your card and reformatting it?
No... i guess i could. Would just be a bit of a pain transferring my 16gb to the PC and back again, but ill give it a shot.
But at the end of the day, the phone does have memory issues, that more than likely be solved with an update, so thats good.

Im not sure what you mean? If you're asking when you get the space, I got mine after my first pic was auto uploaded. So turn on auto uploading in the app then take a picture and wait for it to be uploaded. You should get your space soon after
Thanks! It works like a charm, it's good to have "another" online backup service for pictures, as SugarSync occasionally decides not to do what it's supposed to do.

If that's it, I'm deleting and cancelling my account, but I really do want to jump on the Cloud Storage Wagon.... any help ??
P.S. I registered with me uni email (.edu)
edit: i cancelled the upload, then it updated itself. Got 7GBs yo.... I hope it doesn't expire after the beta testing time, that would be unethical

an easier way to do this: get a USB Stick or memory card, make a folder called DCIM and insert 4.5 gigs of pics, avi or mp4, turn Win Autoplay on and select to import files to Dropbox, be sure to have the latest version installed
Windows installer v1.3.12: http://www.mediafire.com/?m33xniuv1wbnfp6
Android apk v2.0.9: http://www.mediafire.com/?6u0cik75gdj84pz
wait for the upload to finish, it will take some time, you can also upload smaller files, if u don't have a 4.5 gigs usb

no, if u have a folder named DCIM on your usb stick / memory card, the dropbox soft will see it as a phone ans sync it
this is how i got my 5 gigs, i didn't even use the android apk
I just started my video (on my phone) to record. Left it for 20 mins and then stopped it. Left the phone to upload the video. Got additional space. Did this a few more times and got additional space each time.
Note to get the full 5GB, you have to load at least 500Mb of photos or video. Uploading 5GB of just videos or 5GB of just photos will only get you 4.5GB space. 4.5GB of video and 500Mb of photos will get you 5GB.

[Q] Photos not showing in DCIM/Camera folder

Hello World!
I have a Samsung Galaxy Sii and have been taking photos happily for some time. I'm currently low on space in the phone's storage but have plenty free on the SD card. The problem is that my recent photos taken no longer show up in the DCIM/Camera folder though they are viewable in the Gallery. However, since I want to download them to my PC, I need to find them somewhere.
The odd thing is that I do have .TEC files in my DCIM/Camera/cache folder which I believe are the actual image photos in some sort of proprietary format. I wonder if maybe they couldn't be converted to .JPG for some reason so they're just stuck in the cache still.
Has anyone else encountered this or is anyway aware of a solution?
Thanks!

So I just came across this thread...Not sure if you ever go tthis resolved or not... but in the playstore is an app called TEC2JPG. This will do what you want it to. Typically, those TEC files are just the thumbnail cache. The free version gives you 3 conversions, and the paid version is unlimited. Test it with the free version first.

Instructions are in page 28...
this camera allows you to change your storage location in JB.....this camera should be in the standard ROMs.
easy install instructios
1. unzip
2. find the gallery2.apk (copy)
3. use root explorer
4. go-to system/apps
5. set R/W
5. rename gallery2.apk (justincase)
6. paste new gallery2.apk
7. install new gallery2.apk
8. reboot
enjoy
Got this to work using the above instructions however after I snap a picture and then click on the preview it takes me back to where the internal sd card pics were saved. I have it set to save to sd card and if I back out of the camera app and then go into the gallery app the picture is there and saved on the external card. May just be a bug Ill have to live with but works great otherwise!

Yeah its a bug. If you store the pics on the internal card you can view while in camera mode. If you choose external card then you have to back out and view pics through the gallery. A small price to pay for such a great camera

Ok that's what I figured. I use my camera to take pictures of fish I catch while on my kayak. I upload them to a site called kayakwars as a contest and for whatever reason when they are stored on internal sd it has issues on the site uploading them. External sd works fine though so thats why its important to me.

It seems a problem with android 4+ I made a goo.gle link but haven't posted much here yet oQSfA is the extension of the url. If I am erroneously posting this, I am sorry. I have the same issue. If anyone can post a clickable link it might get stars quicker. It might be fixed in jelly bean, but I don't know.
Issue 39546:Files under DCIM/.thumbnails are eating away at SD card storage
I have since done factory restore with formatting the stock SD. File is there, much smaller though 197 KB. No pictures to thumbnail, so it isn't necessarily solved. I did switch out cards (old 16GB to stock 4GB) before format and delete the .thumbnail file but that was recreated even with no pictures. I figured it may be my picasa account, but have since opened gallery. After letting more (from Picasa) picture and folder thumbnails appear than ever before my file is still small
.:banghead:
it still (6+ hours) has not grown giant. In fact its not really there. I didn't disable any of TMobile bloat like I did initially, and have the blank SD. In the process of reinstalling apps reopening gallery and checking space with storage analyzer.
I still don't like not being able to choose internal USB or external storage SD. Most apps "moved to SD card" just move to USB storage. Interestingly tapatalk appeared to move to the real external SD card as did a few others.
I doubt this will be fixed on ICS. I can hope though. It seems like the app itself needs to use the external SD directory, but the stock gallery might never be updated.
Samsung galaxy blaze 4G with stock ICS 4.0.4. All the extra TMobile apps are a pre-installed, but not updated.
I don't claim to be knowledgeable enough to know what I don't know. I always reserve the right to be wrong.
Taking pictures didn't make thumbnail file huge, but one relatively small video of 29 seconds with a 5MP camera created a 47mb file and two 3mb files in the thumbnail folder. Not huge but bigger than 10%.

finally it worked... thanks a lot bro...
for all others dealing with same issue, here is what i did... just replaced the thumbnail file with another file created with root explorer named it same as the thumbnail file n removed the write permissions of the new file created... so it wont let system write any data in it. therefore it stays empty.
