Android phone for Canada: Dual SIM or dedicated? Which to choose? - General Questions and Answers

Fellow techies,
I'm based in the USA, but I visit Canada (both Vancouver Island/Victoria and the BC mainland) 3-4 times per year. I've discovered, the hard way, that my T-Mobile LG V20 (H918T) Just Doesn't Cut It, especially in Victoria. Despite my rate plan being enabled for it, I consistently lose the ability to do texts, data, and anything other than (overpriced) voice calls while in Victoria proper (Topaz Park, Downtown, etc.)
I'm looking at a couple of ideas. The first is a dual-SIM Android phone, one which gives me the ability to, literally, switch between the two countries (I figure I'll just get a pay-as-you-go SIM from Virgin or Bell for the Canada side). The big problem I've run into here is none of the dual-SIM phones I've looked at to date, either rugged or standard, have a removable (read: user-replaceable) battery. That's one thing I absolutely insist on, and it is a deal-breaker.
The second idea is to get a second Canada-dedicated phone, with a pay-as-you-go SIM, and simply turn my US unit off once I cross the border. Again, however, I'm running into the problem of finding one with a removable battery. I'm also uncertain which model I should look at in terms of bands covered.
I own, and very much like, the LG V20. I'd cheerfully grab another one just for use in Canada -- if I could figure out which specific variant to buy, given my carrier preference!
Advice requested. Thanks much!

Question about Verizon service/plans

*Mods, please move if there is a better place. I normally hang out on the development forums so I'm not exactly sure where to post*
I have a phone that I bought from Verizon and I have kept the unlimited data. I know all about my phone but next to nothing about my service.
My question is specifically about phablets (for example, this) which is basically a big ass phone, or a tablet with cell service, however you want to word it. I'd use it exclusively with bluetooth instead of holding the thing up to my head, don't worry.
I travel internationally and see them A LOT in other countries (they cannot help me though since I need one to use in the US). I am under the impression that VZ will not activate anything I did not buy from them. I don't know how solid this is but every VZ employee I have asked has confirmed this so far. I know in the past that it used to be as simple as switching out the SIM card but doubt this is still the case.
I'm sure there are some hardware specs that I need to look at that would determine the LTE/3G whatever compatibility, but I don't know the terminology. Can you help me out?
Also, I am hesitant to leave VZ because of the unlimited data and the service coverage. I live in mildly populated CT, USA and would welcome a prepaid plan if it was comparable but don't even know where to begin looking.
Thank you in advance - I really don't have anyone else to ask about this stuff.
You will want to look for international versions of the devices you are looking for. These versions carry multiple antennas that allows them to be used in different countries. As far as I know, these phones use SIM cards, which allows you to purchase an international SIM or a SIM in the country you are in, and it should work when you plug it into your device.
Is there a way to check for the antennas in the specifications instead of relying on the seller to accurately sell me the int'l version? How would you go about buying a SIM card?

[Q] Moving Moto-X off of Republic Wireless?

Has anyone managed to get their Republic Wireless Moto-X on to Sprint or any of its MVNOs? It looks like ROMs are available, but I don't want to end up with a $300+ paperweight . Has anyone had successully moved their Moto-X to another service (registered MEID and actually gotten service)?
I have been on Republic for a couple of years, and have had to get another carrier because of the breaks in coverage (in Silicon Valley!). With the quality of the web-site and customer service, I'd like to at least salvage a good phone.
Thanks a lot for the help!

I doubt it.

Granted, the article is about the 2013 Moto X, and you're looking at the 2014 Moto X, but I expect the practice of carrier-locking the phone remains. I guess it's technically not carrier locking (which would be illegal), but since it appears that it uses a piece of band spectrum specifically allocated by Sprint for Republic, even if you did unlock the phone, hardware-wise, it's not compatible with any other network.
Makes sense, I guess. It wouldn't do them any good to undercut Sprint/Boost/Virgin/etc phone prices simply so people could buy them and unlock them to use with other providers, even if they do all use the same network.
This thread might help... there's a guy running CM on his phone. Might enable you to put another sim in it and just sprint? I don't know how it works w/ the different radio bands.

American Verizion Note 8 on German T-Mobile

I have a Note 8 I purchased from and used on Verizon when I lived in the US. Now I'm in Germany with a T-Mobile sim card in the phone and I'm having issues.
My phone is unlockd but won't update (Verizon phone on T-Mobile). Every time the phone restarts, it tells me I don't have a Verizon sim card. The voicemail app and a few other Verizon specific things don't work.
After some research, I understand why it won't update but I don't know which way to go to fix this. I have never jailbroke or flashed a phone before but figure that's where this is headed. I'm wary of bricking the phone but am pretty good at following instructions and figuring things out.
My priority is getting the Note 8 updating but I'd also like to remove/fix the Verizon specific issues too.
Any help, advice, links or whatever would be appreciated.

What is the cheapest phone with the MOST Bands?

I want a phone that can work with as many networks as possible. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc
There are many different 3g, 4g, LTE bands, which phone has the most bands while also being pretty cheap?
I don't care about any other feature, as long as it is still a smartphone.
I am tired of my phone getting bad reception or not working when I want to switch networks. I just want a phone that works with any carrier and most places.

Pixel 32GB google edition explained? GSM/CDMA

Hello all. I have a question about the Pixel 1 device. I'm upgrading from a Nexus 5 to a Pixel 32gb. I found a few on eBay and Amazon for $179, but having a really hard time understanding which is what. I am on Project Fi service which uses Sprint, TMobile, and US Cellular. Both CDMA and GSM networks. I thought that all "unlocked" Pixels support all bands and frequencies. The eBay listings say unlocked but NOT for sprint or not for Verizon.
Do i need this rare "google edition" Pixel in order to take full advantage of the Project Fi network? How come an unlocked pixel doesn't support sprint? Maybe someone can explain the different devices more in depth? I'm trying to understand this a little better.
Also i was wondering if there is a way to see in the phone settings if it was for a certain carrier like Verizon or Sprint at some point?
Thank you so much.

Thank you for the reply but you may have misunderstood my question. I don't need help choosing or buying a new phone. I need help understanding the Pixel wireless radios on a hardware and software level. I'm curious as to why an unlocked pixel wont support a certain carrier. Take for instance an unlocked Verizon Pixel. It'll work with every carrier but not sprint. Why?

I don't know if this is the case but, I had found that unlocked Prepaid devices won't work for other carriers.
As for the reason... I really don't know.
