[Q] Moving Moto-X off of Republic Wireless? - General Questions and Answers

Has anyone managed to get their Republic Wireless Moto-X on to Sprint or any of its MVNOs? It looks like ROMs are available, but I don't want to end up with a $300+ paperweight . Has anyone had successully moved their Moto-X to another service (registered MEID and actually gotten service)?
I have been on Republic for a couple of years, and have had to get another carrier because of the breaks in coverage (in Silicon Valley!). With the quality of the web-site and customer service, I'd like to at least salvage a good phone.
Thanks a lot for the help!

I doubt it.

Granted, the article is about the 2013 Moto X, and you're looking at the 2014 Moto X, but I expect the practice of carrier-locking the phone remains. I guess it's technically not carrier locking (which would be illegal), but since it appears that it uses a piece of band spectrum specifically allocated by Sprint for Republic, even if you did unlock the phone, hardware-wise, it's not compatible with any other network.
Makes sense, I guess. It wouldn't do them any good to undercut Sprint/Boost/Virgin/etc phone prices simply so people could buy them and unlock them to use with other providers, even if they do all use the same network.

This thread might help... there's a guy running CM on his phone. Might enable you to put another sim in it and just sprint? I don't know how it works w/ the different radio bands.

[Q] Newbie here; hoping someone can help.

I have a HTC Pro Touch phone that was my company phone for about two months before Verison took over Alltel in my area. My company switched to ATT iphones at that time. I have recently decided that maybe I could use this nice phone with ATT. Much to my disappointment I found through a little research that Alltel and ATT networks are not compatible and the phone and can't be unlocked for use with ATT.
Its seems that my only option now is to find someone with a nice phone that would like to trade hoping that they might be in the same situation in reverse. Have I missed something that can still make this phone work somehow? If not does anyone have a good idea, of how I could make a fair trade?
Thank you and I hope this post is ok for this section.

You could SIM unlock it, but it's not very cheap. There are some nice links in the Raph Wiki that points to SIM unlocking services.
@racing5k
You can try putting it up for sale onbay.com or amazon.com. If you want to avoid registering a selller account on any of those two site (which is free to do), you put a free listing on craigslist.com, always deal local and accept payments in cash and in person. Amazon and ebay will charge you seller/listing fees, there are no fees to list and sell on craigslist. You have a CDMA version of this phone. What you need is the GSM version, which for ATT was branded the HTC Fuze. I have the Fuze but am having a issue with it (battery indicator says it is fully charged at 34%) which I have yer to resolve.
@ZoneBlaze
sim unlock will not work, Alltel uses CDMA technology and ATT uses GSM. racing5k has a CDMA version of the phone, the two technologies are not compatible with each other.

Verizon phone on Sprint?

These guys in my area selling phones from Sprint and claiming they can put them on Verizon and vice versa. They are also selling phones like the Droid 2 and Pro, claiming to put them on T-Mobile. I know those are world phones with GSM capabilities but I did not think for the U.S. I always thought this was not possible. Can someone tell me if I am wrong?
i'd be very careful about dealing with them.
you can take a sprint phone and put it on verizon. you'll have to edit the esn on the phone which is illegal, but it can be done.
as far as putting a verizon phone on t-mobile, thats impossible afaik. unless these devices have north american gsm frequencies, it won't work. however if they do support NA frequencies, it would be possible.
Is this what they do when they talk about spoofing esns or something like that. I think I have an idea of what your talking about. I do not deal with them because I know they are less than reputable. But is that spoofing or whatever?

The Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro DO have GSM capabilities, however as far as I know and from video reviews, if you put the phone in GSM ("Global" mode)with an domestic (American) SIM card, it'll shut of the GSM radio. Stupid, I know. But they know people will just take the phone to T-Mobile and AT&T. This is even after they give you the unlock code. It's part of the software itself.
Now in regards to Sprint, they are SUPPOSED to put other carriers' phones on their networks, however you will not find any employee who will do it for you. Unless you edit the ESN number, which, as someone stated, is illegal, they won't activate it. Other carriers, such as MetroPCS will flash any CDMA phone to their network (although data might not work, usually). Local Boost Mobile stores MIGHT be nice enough to activate a Sprint phone for you. Virgin Mobile, although they run on Sprint, won't.
Yes they would be spoofing the esn from another device so the carrier will see it as a compatible for their system.

I thought it was funny business but like I said, I just wanted to make sure. Thanks guys

HTC Titan - Canada

Hi all i'm new to all this, i've recently moved to Canada and my HTC Titan works over here but only on certain networks and sods law is that its the ones with the most expensive plans.
Places like Wind and Mobilicity say their networks don't work with my phone, which is all gobbledygoo to me. Does anyone know of anyway I can make my phone copatible with those networks, My phone is already unlocked but could I take my phone somewhere and have someone install something onto the phone to rectify the problem. Or is it my best bet to buy a new phone? I only bought my Titan 3 months ago, its a great phone and would be sad to part with it. I think part of the problem is that my phone isn't sold in Canada!
Any advice anyone has would be much appreciated,

Question about Verizon service/plans

*Mods, please move if there is a better place. I normally hang out on the development forums so I'm not exactly sure where to post*
I have a phone that I bought from Verizon and I have kept the unlimited data. I know all about my phone but next to nothing about my service.
My question is specifically about phablets (for example, this) which is basically a big ass phone, or a tablet with cell service, however you want to word it. I'd use it exclusively with bluetooth instead of holding the thing up to my head, don't worry.
I travel internationally and see them A LOT in other countries (they cannot help me though since I need one to use in the US). I am under the impression that VZ will not activate anything I did not buy from them. I don't know how solid this is but every VZ employee I have asked has confirmed this so far. I know in the past that it used to be as simple as switching out the SIM card but doubt this is still the case.
I'm sure there are some hardware specs that I need to look at that would determine the LTE/3G whatever compatibility, but I don't know the terminology. Can you help me out?
Also, I am hesitant to leave VZ because of the unlimited data and the service coverage. I live in mildly populated CT, USA and would welcome a prepaid plan if it was comparable but don't even know where to begin looking.
Thank you in advance - I really don't have anyone else to ask about this stuff.
You will want to look for international versions of the devices you are looking for. These versions carry multiple antennas that allows them to be used in different countries. As far as I know, these phones use SIM cards, which allows you to purchase an international SIM or a SIM in the country you are in, and it should work when you plug it into your device.
Is there a way to check for the antennas in the specifications instead of relying on the seller to accurately sell me the int'l version? How would you go about buying a SIM card?

Unlocked or Verizon ... what's the difference?

I've been with Verizon for eon's, and currently run the LG V10. Having compared all the other networks, Verizon has the best coverage for someone who travels around this country end to end and top to bottom, so they're going to be my only network.
I've been all through the Unlocked and Verizon versions of the Sammy's and Motorola's - other than a few versions bought in other countries (dual sim), I've never really seen a massive difference between the two. Sure the Verizon versions are forever updating their bloatware and their apps I'll never use (Newstand, Movies, etc, etc, etc.) and it's annoying, especially when I've put the apps to sleep and they just keep reanimating themselves, but they take up little space.
Can anyone tell me what the advantages are to spend an extra $130+/- more to LG to get the Unlocked Version over the Verizon version of this phone. I guess it should be noted that I'll probably never Root this phone. (Let's pretend I'm not trading in the V10 so I can get a user-comparison of what I'm getting for my money and not a comparison just based on money.)
What are the advantages of an unlocked phone?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

bloat free, unlocked, if you want you have option to unlock BL? id buy it just for bl unlock alone lol
If you don't plan on trying to root and don't really mind the bloat then it's not worth it. The vzw version will work out of the country.

Not all countries.
I do a fair amount of overseas travel, Europe, U.A.E., Brazil, etc ... but I have an older Sammy phone I can swap out SIM Cards for those locations.
But you're right, North America, Central America and the Caribbean it works (most) of the time.
Thank you for the insight on the differences. This is what I thought and I like these confirmations!

Check the different bands for both versions. Reason why I bought the AT&T variant and not TMobile or the unlocked version was because there were 2 or more bands missing from those variants that the AT&T one supported.
I already get spotty coverage in my apartment occasionally and especially during our football gamedays with just how many people flood into the city. I didnt want the risk of having worse coverage especially with how much this phone cost.
Edit: if you want my opinion, I don't mind the bloat - just disable and be done with it. Downloaded the dns66 for adblocking. Honestly I feel like I'm not missing out on too much. It would be nice to have my phone rooted but I prefer knowing I will have reliable coverage versus not knowing and hoping for the best

Thanks for the reply - and you're right about the different frequencies on Unlocked phones. I dealt with that when I bought my Sammy in Dubai. It works great all over the world ... but it's horrible here in the States!
I'll look into that DNS66 for Ad-Blocking. As for disabling the Bloatware, I do that, but for some reason they seem to reanimate every couple months, maybe it's Verizon pushing them open when there's an update for them.
Thanks !
