Can't feel phone vibration? - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

When in vibrate mode, I can't feel any notification !
The phone does vibrate but the vibration is so slight I can't barely even hear it when the phone is close to me on the table.
When the phone is in my pants pocket or on a soft surface, I cant feel a thing at all.
Has anyone experienced this yet?
Thanks.

I can say what your describing is the exact issue I had with my OnePlus 5 and installed EX Kennel to bump the vibration strength but want by much unfortunately.
I have my OnePlus 6 in the OnePlus sandstone case and it cause the vibration much easier to hear sure to a slight restore but not annoying at all. I agree though in my pocket I barely hear it and certainly can't feel it.

Do you mean, it's normal and inherent to OnePlus to have very faint unfeelable vibration?

yeah the vibration on this phone is pretty crappy. They defiantly used cheap parts. One of my cons of this device.

You can adjust vibration intensity for calls and notifications in the sounds menu

Actually it's not cheap parts, it's small parts. The vibrator seems to be very small (see iFixit) probably to make room for other things (which I approve )

That was the first thing I tried.
Before posting this thread.

Yep I'm in the same boat. The awful weak vibration on this phone really sucks. I hope it can be at least slightly improved in software...

unfortunately history shows it's not possible to mend it. Since OPO they couldn't manage a proper motor on any OP phones as I read. The saga continues. (I had OPO, this was my biggest issue at the time, now same with OP6)

so does everyone just keep the ringtones on?

It's a real shame - you don't notice how important it is until it's gone... I'm still holding out hope for a way to change the pattern - if it went a bit longer for notifications I might notice it but the two weak little buzzes aren't doing much. Any ideas?

i sit on my bed the phone stays besides me...maybe only 3 inch away from me.. notice only 3 inch and still I can't feel it or hear it.. it's not possible to always keep the phone in ring mode.. tried ex kernel to increase..it slightly improved but not that much to be felt... it's a shame..and i think I'll have to change this phone for only this reason..this is a pretty great phone but this little thing makes a world of a difference for me
---------- Post added at 12:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:00 PM ----------
it's not quite possible...i had a 5t with same problem.. tried blu spark kernel and it improved to feel at least but with this op6 it's not possible because i tried ex kernel and same sh*t vibration

I've been consistently missing texts due to this. Is there a kernel fix anyone has? I'm thinking of installing one. CleanSlate looks good, but I don't think it does vibration intensity. Darn shame.

Looks like that's what it is.
Maybe we can ask Oneplus support to consider it for some next update?

I had the same issue with my OP5T. Could only feel light vibration and nothing when in pocket. Now the situation is even worse. My phone doesn't vibrate at all in Vibrate mode and I don't find any options to customize it.

Yeah, it sucks. Even coming from an old phone like the 6s Plus, the motor was a huge downgrade.
I was surprised to see that there isn't an option for making your own vibration patterns like iOS does.
Strange because it's usually iOS that abstains cool features.

Maybe some dev can build a magsik module that checks the proximity sensor and if triggered (like the pocket mode), it vibrates way longer, like 70ms.

[FIX] Weak vibration on your S4? Here is a creative work around!

The only thing I really don't like about the Galaxy S4 is that the vibration is fairly weak. Working in an office I need to have my phoen on vibrate as a colorful ringtone is simply not an option. But I miss text messages and phone calls on occasion because I just don't feel the phone vibrating in my pocket.
Heck even if I have it laying on a nearby table sometimes I still don't hear it vibrating.
I have come up with a sollution acceptable work around to this issue!
I made a vibration sound as my ring tone. So now when the phone vibrates it also goes BzzzBzzzBzzz out of the speaker.
It's barely loud enough to be heard by anyone but you if it's in your pocket. If anyone else does hear it, it still just sounds like a normal vibrating phone. No obnoxious ringtone.
If you want to try this out I've included 3 WAV files in the attached zip.
- Base Vibration Sound.wav - This is the sound file I used as a base for the final ringtones I made. I have scoured the internet looking for vibration sounds. This one is the one that sounded most like an actual vibrating phone. Use this file as your source if you want to try this technique out but don't like the final products I created.
- Ringer Vibration.wav - I added some bass and increased the volume, and extended the length of the original source file so make a loud, long, steady vibration sound that is roughly the length of a normal incoming call vibration.
- SMS Vibration.wav - Same bass and volume changes as the Ringer Vibration, but it's 3 short bursts insead of one long steady vibration. I did this because 3 short burts is how I've always set my my SMS vibration sequence. There are pauses between each vibration in the squence so you can hack up he file and change the vibration pattern as needed easily enough.
Hopefully this idea helps someone else.
Note, I still have the phone vibrate and ring in settings so it still vibrates. The vibration sound is jus in addition.
This is still a work in progress for me. So if you can improve on it please do and share your version here! If there are any real audiophile geeks out there who can make this sound really good, please share your talents! I am NOT an audio guy by any means. I just found a vibration sound file online and modded it with a little cutting and pasting and enhancement options using a free program called Audacity on Ubuntu. So if someone has and knows how to use high quality audio modification software to do this properly, by all means please show us what youv'e got!
Wow, thinking "out of the box"! Good sh*t! Another way to strengthen ur vibrate is through ktoonesz kernel, in the extras menu (ktweaker, comes with the kernel), you can change the strength.

I use CyanogenMod for the T Mobile variant (I have a 919) and it has a feature to let you increase the strength of the vibration. But even at it's max it's not that powerful.
Does hat ktoonesz kernel make a significant difference for your variant? I don't have access to the kernel but I can certainly get devs to port that mod to 919 kernels if it works.
I think the problem isn't how much power that is sent to the vibration motor. It's that the unit itself doesn't vibrate much.
If you've never seen one, all a vibration unit is is a small electric motor with a lopsided weight on the end so it wobbles when it spins. When it spins fast the wobble becomes a vibration.
The S4 vibration unit (I'm trying REALLY hard not to call it a vibrator....haha) simply doesn't have a very lopsided weight on the end of the motor. So it doesn't wobble much.
I never messed with it, I just use his recomended settings (except for oc)...it ranges from 15-125. I'll mess with it and see for you. As far as a kernel goes, it's the best imo, never fc my phones unless I oc it to the max, which is 2.3 I think, I can oc to 2.1 with no problems. The incredible part is that it is great on the battery, even oc'd, i get better battery life than stock, weird imo, but I'm still very new to all this.
VIBRATOR check, LOL, didn't seem to change at ALL, felt the same, I have seen a lot of ppl commenting on it though, on how it works. You mentioned you don't have axx to it? You mean to work on it?

[Q] Loud Vibration

So I moved from a Nexus 4 to Nexus 5! I must say that I love this phone already. However, I have noticed that the vibration feedback from typing is so incredibly loud, especially compared to my Nexus 4. I feel like when I'm typing that everyone around me can hear each key-press. Now I know I can turn it off, but I really like the feedback when typing. But man is it loud. Seems I'm gonna have to resort to a custom rom to turn down the vibration level eventually.
Anyone else notice this?
Yeah mine is the same UK White 16GB.
A friend has recently got a UK Black 32GB (I think), and his is perfectly fine, vibration is quiet as you would expect.
I am probably going to return mine to CPW and get a new one, but I will check that one over before leaving the store. I think the current know defects are the vibration motor, screen backlight bleed, dead pixels and loose power button. My N5 only has the vibration issue, everything else is perfect.
For now I have gone in to advanced settings on the Google Keyboard and changed the Vibration Duration to 5ms. This gives enough feedback but makes the volume less audible unless you are typing very fast.
U can turn it down

Ah, so it means mine is defective? Is this something Google would take and RMA for? That's a shame.. Everything else is great on mine
I actually have the opposite problem. The vibration on my N5 is almost _too_ weak. I'll have to test to see if I'd even notice it when it's in my pocket and I get a call (yes, I know, there are many jokes possible right there). The vibration on my N4 is actually harsh like described in the OP.
Checkout the Nexus 5 Defects thread in the General section. Other people, including me, have the exact same issue with the vibration. Trying to RMA it now . . .
Just exchanged my white Nexus 5 for a black as I much prefer the soft touch coating. The new unit has a quieter vibrate motor It still has the similar sound if you listen close but it's nowhere near as loud as the white one I had

Clicking noise with haptic feedback

Just wondering if anyone us hearing an audible clicking noise coming from the phone when typing with vibrate on keypress switched on. For me it's every five or so key presses there is an audible click noise, as if the vibrating part hits something.it's not too loud, but loud enough to be heard. If you use a keyboard that lets you change the vibration duration, shorter durations such as 10ms or below results in it happening every keypress.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
I had this too on 2 Moto G.
Sent from my HUAWEI Y300-0100 using xda app-developers app
Did you also hear the same noise when going in and out of the camera?
Just wanted to know if it's normal really or if I should be seeking a replacement. Have a feeling it's going to get annoying!
I get them both too, don't think it's anything to worry about.
The camera one is something to do with auto focus as far as I'm aware, and I use Google Keyboard from the Play store with swiping to type so I don't notice the haptic feedback one as much any more.

This is driving me slowly nuts. I type pretty fast using SwiftKey which seems to make it more noticeable. I guess the shorter it vibrates the more it clicks or taps or whatever it's doing to make the annoying noise.
Is there anyone that DOESN'T get this? I'm seriously tempted to return it at this point in the hope of getting one that doesn't make a tapping clicking noise when it vibrates on touch. So it would be good to know if there are people out there who haven't experienced this.
I have two Moto G's at the moment.
The first one has a permanently stuck on blue pixel in the middle of the screen.
So I bought another (to transfer across and then refund the first). The second unit has this click with haptics.
The tone of the vibrate / haptic is noticeably different between the two phones too (the clicking unit sounds much buzzier).
So thumbs up for Moto Quality Control...
I took the phone which makes this noise with the haptics on apart, and can confirm that the noise is not from the buttons on the side rattling or any other part in the back of the phone. It sounds to me like it is making some component of the earpiece or the front camera rattle.
For anyone interested, here is a photo of the inside of the back cover that I took:

So we have one person confirming that at least one device does not have the rattling vibration. Mine definitely has this and it's sounding from those I've asked that it is more common than not. Well this sucks. I guess I can go without haptic at all. Because it's darn annoying. Sounds like a cheap toy. I'm still slightly tempted to return mine and see if the next one they send does not have the rattle.

I think you are correct - at least for units currently on sale via Tesco in the UK. My update - 3 of the 4 I've had through my hands have had the rattle. 2 have had stuck pixels (one which disappeared of it's own accord). So:
Phone 1: Quiet vibrate + 1 perma-stuck pixel + case corner creaking
Phone 2: Clicky vibrate
Phone 3: Clicky vibrate + stuck pixel (fixed itself)
Phone 4: Clicky vibrate
Did you buy through Tesco? I wonder if they got em cheap... they are certainly selling them cheaper than everywhere else.
I am beginning to think this is a characteristic - but it does detract a bit from the experience (especially with haptics turned on at the factory).
You could reduce the haptic duration for the AOSP keyboard which improves things while texting (try 10-13ms), and disable system haptics for other stuff.
Guys, did we get a conclusion if this is normal on this device? Mine does this as well.
Thanks

I think it is pretty normal. It's just cheap. Although it just might be a failure to properly attach the vibrating mechanism to whatever it attaches too. I have talked to some people with even the Moto x and they said that all of a sudden one day, theirs started making this sound. As if it detached. I have also seen a Nexus 4 with the issue.
In all likelihood, if you got a different Moto G, it will have the same issue. But it's really not bad at all if you turn haptic feedback off in general and for the your keyboard input.

Simply awful software. Just me?

Hi,
Coming from a Moto Z and before that a 6P.
Ok... I didn't intend to hate this phone but... Why are notifications broken? Why dont PocketCasts playback controls work?
I know this is "1 aspect" but to me notifications are vital and i simply don't understand this phone.
- i receive a notification and screen lights up (i set that per app)
- but then I unlock phone
- notifications still in notification shade. I lock device.
- they are no longer on lock screen
Why?
That's not how any other device i have owned worked?
And lock screen music playback is... A disaster?
I consider this phone basically unusable... Yet reviews never mentioned this. Am I alone?
I agree with you, mostly. I'm coming from a Nexus 6P (and many Nexi before that since the One), so I'm used to the plain Vanilla and love it. I was able to rectify some of the notification issues by enabling banner and lockscreen notifications from the Settings >> Notification & Status Bar >> Notification Management area. It doesn't fix everything, and at times (especially the beginning) it was very frustrating. I have it for 5 days now and am at a point where I think it's usable and am waiting for LineageOS to come out with a vanilla-ish version.
http://lineagerom.com/huawei-mate-9-lineage-nougat-update/
The battery is what drew me to the phone and it doesn't disappoint. I can get about 24 hours and that impresses me.
Thanks, have that set for important apps. Feels like a massive part of Android (notifications) are basically missing. Rest is good/ok/great but.... Just feels like madness that this is acceptable in 2017.
yup, hw software sux. end of. waiting for stock-ed customs

Yea, that's what ended up being the deal breaker for me. I absolutely loved everything else with the phone, but notifications are the baseline of what a phone should be (at least to me), and this phone failed at that miserably. Not being able to reply to a text without unlocking the phone is a no go for 2017. I also kept hearing how battery life was amazing...I never really saw that either considering the size of the battery and a 1080p screen. I've got a Moto Z Play and I can tell you that this is truly amazing battery life. I'm now sitting at 53% with 4:39 sot and been off charger since 9:45a...It's now 1a the following morning. Not putting down Mate 9, as I really did like the rest of the phone...So much so that I'm on here looking to see if they have come out with an update for the glaring problem you guys are discussing. It looks as they Huawei doesn't even acknowledge the issue, so not counting on a fix. Oh well
Sent from my XT1635-02 using Tapatalk
I'm really surprised Huawei get a free pass on this. I read about 10 reviews, saw lots of YouTube videos and I had no idea how this phone handles notifications. I simply don't believe that someone coming from "normal" Android versions wouldn't find this different enough to warrant a huge rant?
Very frustrating. I like so many aspects of this device but the basic things are terrible. Madness.
for lock screen music playback -
settings> then uptop type in notifications> notifications panal> notification managment. then find the app you want to allow on the lockscreen. hope that helps.
Spot on! I'm 700 USD in on this phone. Only thing going for it on my side is the battery (so far) and dual sim as I travel a lot.
The rest is just unacceptable... At the very best. Likely the first and the last Huawei I'll own.
It's not just software that is bad for notifications. The hardware is poor too. The LED is tiny and almost invisible. The vibration is very weak so you can't feel it in your pocket.
This is a great phone underneath, but the little things really spoil it.
Huawei had a great opportunity to take business off Samsung, but they have blown it.
This has put me off Huawei. I'll be trading in the Mate for a Note 8. Or perhaps I won't wait for that. The S8+ is looking good.
Coming from a Nexus 6, the software has it's issues, but overall I like my Mate 9 so much more. Thought I would be missing the stock Android in a daily basis, but I seem to be very happy with my new phone.

Coming from the disastrous year of Samsungs (s7 Active, s7 Edge, Note 7) Im loving the mate 9. Getting 10 hours of screen on time, notifications havent been an issue at all (Ive had to unlock the phone to reply to a text on every single phone Ive used including iPhone). I prefer the lockscreen stay clean and the led flash when I have something unread. Out of all the phones Ive used this past year, this is the only one Ive kept. Ive got a Moto Z Force sitting on my table thats for sale and once its gone all Ill have left is my iPhone 6s plus and the Mate 9.

I have no issues with the brightness of the led at all, in fact I prefer it to the absurd brightness of the s7 series. My phone is primarily on a desk or table and I havent missied any notifications at all. Also my volume is always on so I hear my phone go off and never really pay attention to the vibration of it but I would say its right on par with my iPhone. Another thing is I use Textra and always have so Ive got the vibration set to "multiple short" and if the phone is for some reason on silent I still hear the vibration when a notification comes in. Honestly I have no complaints about anything with this phone especially now that Ive been able to change out the emojis without root (hate android emojis).

if it was pure vanilla, this phone would be the end all.

I use an app called Flash notificationn 2. basically on any missed notifications it keeps flashing the camera and lights up the screen( set every min or so). it works very well. coming from a note 4 i was also tossed. I do love this phone and at 599.00 seems a steal. does it have shortcomings , ya it does. but so does every phone. price to price with the s8+ or note 8 rumored at close to a grand makes this phone a steal. especially considering the list of shortcomings the galaxys 8 will have.

That seems like an odd issue to me. All it takes to unlock the phone is touching a sensor. Unless the complaint is about doing it while sitting flat on a surface, then I agree the sensor placement isn't optimal. But if replying to a text without unlocking the phone is important, that's easily solved with a 3rd party text app, like Textra.
I also haven't noticed the issues with notifications in my usage that others have had. But I do agree the notification LED could be brighter, and the vibration stronger.

This just doesn't work reliably. Spotify works 60% of the time maybe but PocketCasts about 5%. Totally rubbish.
Really mixed bag of opinions here.
I'm almost wondering if there are multiple software versions showing different behaviour?
The 2 notifications issues i have are :
1. Music playback controls. Dreadful. Seems like some apps whitelisted but even those don't work 100% of the time. PocketCasts (even latest version from 2 days ago) works basically never, meaning i need to unlock phone to pause. A total joke.
2. Notifications. Lock screen shows them once and once only. As soon as i unlock, all notifications are not shown again on lock screen, unlike normal Android.
For those that "don't have issue with the notifications"... Do you see what i see?

Android 12...bugs so far?

I noticed the OXYGEN UPDATER APP now has Android 12 available to install but it hasn't quite made it to the official update in the settings. Just wondering if anyone has tried this update and whether you experienced or heard of any bugs?
I have no reason to think there is but Ive literally heard nothing good, bad or neutral. It's like no one owns this phone anymore. An update like this used to be noteworthy. That said, if anyone reads this and you have info, please share. Thanks
I have updated my device today and one thing I have noticed the most is that volume levels after the update are much lower than they were. I cannot use normally my earphones indoors and cannot image how bad it will perform outdoors.
Would be grateful if someone knows how to fix such problem.

I appreciate the feedback. I still haven't updated, but lately I've had volume issues. Both pairs of ear buds are noticeably lower than they were in the past. On one pair the right ear bud is barely usable, especially in a somehat noisy setting, but it's gotta be an issue with the ear bud.
In general, I need to crank them all the way up in the gym.

I have fixed the issue with low sound levels when using earphones, but, unfortunately, I cannot describe clearly how 'cause it was a bit incomprehensible. I just connected one more time my earphones to smartphone, opened some video on YouTube, then pop-out of some option about volume came out. Then I tapped on it and there was an option that has strange description (maybe it is because of localization) that I switched on, and the volume issue fixed magically. After that, I couldn't find that option once again in settings.
Sounds familiar. I think it's a built-in volume limiter. Should be able to find something in the settings and if not maybe enable developer settings and see if you find it there. Something like "absolute volume".
But it looks like you got it sorted out anyway.
Actually nevermind. I got that confused with something else. I believe all that would do is keep the earbuds and the phone volumes separate.
There's been talk that Android 12 and Android Auto don't work well in some cars - not OnePlus specific, but in general. Has anyone tried Android Auto with 12 yet on the OP8?
Alan
I did the update, and here is what I notice:
The icons on top of the screen are not the same size.
The Notifications sometimes are lost (Whatsapp/text etc)
Whatsapp voice calls echo and sometimes the phone does not ring
Ghost touches when gaming (clash royale)
The screen goes ON for no reason
The battery sometimes is okay, sometimes it drains (your mileage may vary)
Screen unlock fingerprint behavior slow at times and sometimes is fine.
The volume issue that everyone is reporting
All of if has been reported to OnePlus. If you visit the OP forums everyone is pretty pissed off about it myself included.
Honestly, it feels like this is an Alpha version of the ROM and they are using the general public to test and find bugs.
This is pretty frustrating a phone is not a toy is a tool for work and to communicate with others.
Fingerprint unlock stops working after a few days. Reboot brings it back.
Just to update. AA works fine with Android 12 on my OP8
