Should I return my Gear S3 or keep it? Please help? - Samsung Gear S3

Hi Guys,
I bought a Gear S3, it was preowned, so I fear that there might be some issues with its battery, including having a faulty battery completely. Can you please guide me/confirm the following battery behaviors to be true on your Gears OR do I in fact have a bad watch and it needs to be returned?
1. When watch is off the cradle, not connected to the phone (disconnected through the Gear app), but NOT in Airplane mode, it goes from 100% battery to 0 and dead within 24 hours. Normal?
2. 100% charge, wrist gesture on, Samsung pay, no LTE, just bluetooth, used for about 12 hours, message notifications, maybe 3 - 4 hours of AOD. The day ends with about 50% charge. Normal?
3. Off the cradle, in Airplane mode, started with 100% battery, not used for 12 hours, just on the desk, ~95% battery left. Normal?
4. Slightly off topic question: When a Chromecast video is playing, watch detects it, knows the title of the video, but Play/Pause, Skip doesn't work. Normal?
Appreciate your prompt input, I need to open an RMA before the end of this week. Thank you!

Your watch is ok man. Enjoy it

Haha thanks Johnny! So those are all normal scenarios in your experience?
Also, any comment the controlling the Chromecast issue? ?

This is normal
I have a Gear S3 Classic with Verizon LTE. I have AOD on (Display set to 6), and lots of notifications via email and text, but almost no phone call). I uses about 50% to 60% of battery from 7am to 9pm.
AOD is the battery killer. Also Setting uses a lot of power (install app, playing with watchface, etc.). Using custom watchface (those does not dim much in AOD mode) can suck up a lot of power.
Not sure why people really care about whether it lasts 2 days or 3 days per charge. The normal use scenario is to charge your phone and watch every night.

Thank you friend for chiming in with your experience! Can you test/confirm the Chromecast issue I talked about?
Also, very interested to hear others share their battery experiences on comment on whether my watch has a possible battery flaw?
Thank you in advance!

The chromcast issue is probably normal also. Remember the Gear S3 watch is running Tizen not Android. So incompatibility is expected. I am surprised you actually get notification on Chromcast. So Samsung did the good 50% job.

S6 and Gear S2 - Battery

Just started using my watch not my mobile and getting allot of battery drain, my S6 was at 72% 4 hours later at 27%.
Recall with my Gear 2 a similar issue but after a series of firmware updates was all fine.
Same config here, and I don't have this problem. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to find my S6 doesn't seem to drain battery significantly faster. Haven't done any precise measure though.
I would say you have some problem in one of the bricks of the Gear plugin / apop store / bluetooth link, that makes an app constantly trying to connect or to do something it can't, draining battery in the process.
Also, maybe you have disabled some apps that are needed by the combo S2/S6? Like Samsung account, etc.
Gear S2 Classic Battery Drain
I just got my Gear S2 Classic three days ago and am disappointed with the battery life... lasts maybe 15 hours with the screen set to 3. I'm working with online tech support but definitely disappointed considering my LG G R (one year old technology) has a battery life twice that of the Gear S2 right now.... surely there's a battery drain issue.

I'm using Sport version for about month and what you wrote is strange. Minimum use is solid one day, but usually I'm getting 1.5-2 days of use and with screen always on. Try disable WIFI and NFC and check if this helped.
No all standard configuration as I prefer to do that first and then start tailoring. S6 now down to 37% - last night it went flat (use my S6 as an alarm clock).
On the plus side S2 been on since 6AM only gesture on set to offer - Battery 66% not bad if I can get two full real days.
But not as good as my Gear 2 that did 25% a day.
Have left WIFI on just to start from a standard baseline. Watch is always on BT, assuming only switches if BT signal lost.

Glad to hear you're getting solid battery life sounds like i need to figure out what is causing the battery drain. I reset the watch last night and charged it all night, NFC and WIFI off, gesture wake off, brightness set to 3 and screen is always on. I'll see how it goes.

How did it go? I'm having similar issues. Dying at about 13 hours with light usage and mostly everything turned off (gps, wifi, s voice) screen brightness set to 2. My gear s gave much me many more hours with everything turned on.
I installed the linear digital clock face £1 on the watch face gallery, and my S6 edge+ brought up a message stating that I should Uninstal or stop the app as it was using a high percentage of my Phone battery, like nearly as much as screen on usage, guess it was using the phones GPS and weather too frequently Uninstalled and all well again, don't know if this helps

I have the same problem as the op. My S6 edge battery is draining faster than before. Since the last week with the Gear S2 paired to the phone my battery doesn’t make it through the day even with very light use (screen 20mins on time).
The thing is I think I had this problem start a couple of days before I received the Gear S2. Could it be after some app updates?
I never had any updates only change was the S2
Have done a S2 reset still the same, have to charge at work and in the car otherwise by morning battery is nearly dead.

My S6 edge has been on for 5 hours without any use today and is down to 70% already. If this continues I might try a hard reset on both phone and watch.
Found out why I got battery drain. Phone was connecting to 5Ghz on dual band router which drains battery fast. Switched it over to 2.4Ghz and everything is fine now.

It's going a LOT better but I no longer use the 'always on' face either.
I reset the watch:
1. Power off the device. 2. Hold down the Home button until you see the Samsung logo with the rebooting message. 3. Tap the Home button until you get to the BIOS menu. 4. Tap the Home button to highlight "Recover" and long press. Please note that this will take about 5 minutes.
I have always on face off, brightness set to 4, bluetooth on, wifi off and nfc off. This morning I put on the watch at 6AM, it's now 3:45PM and I'm at 78% so that's about ten hours with 22 percent discharged so 2.2% an hour so realistically at this rate it'll last about 45 hours which is acceptable to me. I don't understand how you would get 2-1/2 days though.

Battery life Discussion

To discuss hands on real life battery performance of Gear S3.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Really! I mean REALLY....battery life again.....come on. its so subjective. While most posters moan about battery life on smart watches and mobiles etc I turn this point on its head and rather marvel at what such devices deliver considering they are powered by such small batteries.
The vast majority of mobile owners moan about battery and cannot accept the batteries limitations.
The watch is not even on sale yet but we can guarantee it will please a few and upset the majority .
If you want year long battery life one has to look at the conventional watch not the smart watches. Even better go automatic.
Too much amphetamines bro. Lol.
2 full days on Gear S now
I get 2 full days on my Gear S now, so am hoping the S3 does the same with Always On feature active. I do not mind charging daily though, not a big deal.
I get 2 - 3 days from my Gear S2 easily.

Hey guys...
I have yet to tweak anything on the watch and it is connected to my S7 Edge.
I get less than "a Business day" use out of the current out of the box set up. This is the NON-LTE version.
Things worth noting:
1. I do not use always on.
2. I have brightness set to 5 during the day and 2 at night.
3. GPS, Bluetooth, and location are on.
4. Have not altered the out of the box systems that monitor health yet.
5. I have added several apps, Flipboard, Gmail, Gcalendar, Uber, white light, google map, xenozu(you tube-player), calculator, remote camera, weather monitors 2 cities and several watch faces.
6. having it 100% charged at midnight/1am and no use other than sleeping with it on leaves the watch at 50% by 7am.
Anyone finding or knowing what tweaks and adjustments start saving on battery life...please let me know. I will report once I make a few changes as well.
I am sure with some simple changes, we will all be able to use the watch all day without charging it. Anyone that found any changes to their older S2 helped?
Dan
I have had the non LTE version Gear S3 since launch day. I can go through a full day (7 am to 11 pm) and the battery level is b/w 50-55%. I have been wearing the watch overnight to monitor my sleep the last several days. When I wake up around 7 am, the battery level is b/w 45-50%.
Settings:
Display: Always On activated
Bluetooth: On
Wifi: Automatic
NFC: On
Location: Off

I can get 1.5 to 2 days of battery life. This includes roaming around for 2-3 hours a day without my phone. I had to condition the battery a few times (draining it to 0) before it would last more than a day.

i dont know what they did in the last update , but ive gone from almost 3 days to not even 1 day now on my frontier ... im not impressed at all, i missed my alarm this morning because of a flat fkn watch ....
I need to recondition the battery, but after turning off "diagnostic and usage reporting" I found that the battery life has increased from 1d12hr to 2d16hr. I feel like that had a huge impact.
Canadian S3 Frontier (SM-R760) on XAR. Have yet to use Samsung Pay, but it's on there now. See post #290 this thread for details on how to change Frontier CSC.

On Gear S3
Settings>About>Scroll down
it's second from last
My personal experience with the problem of strong battery drain on Gear S3 classical vers after updated with tizen 3.0:
- I have read that this was a common problem and several posts regarding this issue
- I have factory reset the watch
- I have changed my band from curved to standard. I had one of the nice curved version, I have changed with a standard band that allow the hearth rate monitor to be completely on my wrist. Please note that I have a relatively small wrist for others this may have no significance.
I did this because in one post I read that Samsung has changed the AOD setting to be managed not anymore by Gyroscope but by the heart rate sensor
- I have designed with Gear watch Designer several faces. I have observed that the main issue was that the AOD was not reducing the brightness.
Then I have designed a face having very lo brightness in the AOD version (6.6% ratio)
Now comes the strange......
- I have tested the watch for few days with the same settings (no wifi, no location, brightness level 5, AOD on, BT on) and doing the same things starting from full (nominal) charge 100% in the early morning .......
RESULT
- The first hour or so the battery level decreases very quickly until 90% (approx rate 10% in 1 hr) but then (...... surprise surprise .....). the discharge decreases and stabilizes for the rest of the day at a rate approximately of 4% per hr.
After 12 hrs of use I have about 45% of battery remaining
I believe that the watch does not charges completely in real and that the 100% is only nominal
ever since the last update, i have been getting a solid 6-7 hours of use out of the battery

Mode for good battery life

1) Do you have your watch with the display always on or only when you flick the vrist? I have min in always on mode because I like to se ethe time all the time. And I have wifi on and no sim in the watch. I get around a day (from 7 am to 10 pm)of battery life depending on how many notifications I get during a day. I sometimes get 1,5 day. I think that was when I had the wifi disabled.
2) Which watch face is the best for battery life?

1. No.. it is an amoled, do NOT use always on or you will burn the display. I just a watch face which is barely visible. Not to conserve battery, but not that disturbing when use it at night.
2. design your own, with a all dark and barely visible text.
Ok. I thought that amoled was battery friendly. Do you use flick with the vrist to light up the display or do you use the watch button?
there is another thread about HW2 battery.
please move discussion there.

As long as you're using ambient mode with always on, screen burn-in is not a huge concern. Ambient mode will shift the screen contents periodically using, if i recall, 23 different positions. Stock watch faces are designed using display elements that are small enough to work well with ambient mode and avoid screen burn-in. Even custom faces like ultimate watch 2 follow this design practice. i doubt this eliminates burn-in completely but it will certainly reduce it.

S3 Frontier and Battery life on LTE

Can someone let me know some good settings for battery life on LTE watch? My battery don't even make it threw the day? Please?
I'm new to the watch (classic), so I'm running relatively stick settings.
I did set it to only turn on WiFi when Bluetooth connection lost. Screen timeout fifteen seconds. Location services off (figure if I'm driving and need it I'd rather use phone services).
I'm getting 48 hours between charges and dropping to around thirty percent.
Do you have a watch face that's running tons of stuff? Or basic one?
Talking on it a lot, or running music through it?
Basic watch face.
Check os version, update to tizen 3.0 has a lot of comments on battery issues. May just be you updated and are stuck with crap battery until they fix...

Something else obviously tapping your watch battery.
First thing I'd do is set a plain basic face. Then test for a day, if battery issue fixed then you just had a poorly designed face. Some take heart rate every minute... Steps, weather update. Stuff you may not realize is even happening.
If that doesn't do it, check your notifications. Do tons on apps send notifications often? Maybe drop down to a min amount, then test for a day.
I'd definitely set lte "mobile networks" to auto, then WiFi completely off or only on when Bluetooth disconnects. WiFi isn't much benefit when you have lte, because there's not much you can do with the watch to eat up any data cap you might have, so could leave it off.
Heart rate check every hour, nothing shorter.
Screen time out fifteen seconds
Hopefully that sorts it.
Another consideration is you could have a lemon. How long have you had it? Might have an overheating issue, which could eat the battery. I've heard of a few, but pretty rare I think.
Good luck,
Ooo

Hello, suggest resetting it. Use Blue Stealth watch face as it had very little white light which uses a lot of power.
Also. When it is disconnected from bluetooth and the LTE radio is on this will use much more battery. Keep all other settings as you have them. Samsung Health "nudges" also use battery so if you dont need them, turn those off too.
See if this helps too extend the battery life. If not then you truly may have a lemon.

Set up is everything. I use a black and white face with color only for a second hand. I turn off stuff I don't need like NFC and BT and wifi (don't need if LTE). I turned off Location because it doesn't seem to effect GPS when I'm walking. Not sure why yet. I dont use alot of wizz bang apps like a map, news alerts, or fancy running app. Just SHealth and there are things that the phone is just better for, like news. I get about 36-48 hours depending on if I text alot OR IF I'M OUT OF CELL RANGE. You'll burn alot of battery if the watch is looking for a tower. I'm working on how to manage that better. Hope that helps.

Turned on my gear 100% charge the percentage dropped to 33% From 4am to 5am I reset my gear and now the battery is climbing and it's now at 8:51am at 47%? Wtf? I'm going to try to run the battery down until it shuts off today and recharge for tomorrow if same thing then it's off to Samsung she goes..

I had the exact same problem with my watch, and I was never able to figure it out. I tried factory resetting it, booting it up in recovery mode, uninstalling all 3rd party apps, letting it drain completely and recharging it, etc., but nothing seemed to affect the battery drain. The weird thing is the watch would last 3 days on a charge even though it would drain quickly at first. It would go down to 55% within the first couple of hours, rise back up to 60-70%, and then drain slowly for the next 2 days. The fact that the battery lasted 3 days was great, but the initial drain bugged me so much that I sold the watch.
I read a post on the official Samsung forum where a guy said he narrowed his battery drain problem down to a bug in the Weather app. He claims the GPS antenna continuously searches for the location, even when Location Services are turned off. His solution is to never update the Weather app. Since I don't have the watch anymore, I have no way to verify it.

Question LTE 44mm Version Battery Life

Hi all,
I'm about to get a Galaxy Watch 4 LTE 44mm but i've been reading a looot of bad reviews about battery life. Since most of those reviews are from 2021 or so, are you guys experiencing this issue? Would BL version be a better choice or should i stay outside Exynos and go for a TicWatch Pro 3 ?
1 it's not Exynos
2 there are loads of posts here about it, use search..

I leave lte, bt, and wifi running all the time. I turned off aod. I use a black watchface and I typically make a couple of phone calls and answer a few texts during the day. I'll get home with 30-40% battery left. However, if I stream Spotify for 3 or 4 hours, or make long phone calls I'll be down to 10 or 15% battery. This is my first smart watch and I got it just to see if it would allow me to be more hands free and have less interruptions grabbing my phone from the truck or from another room. I didn't even consider battery life when I bought it. It's worked great for me. I'm happy with the watch. My only complaint is it gets hot and shuts itself down to cool off. If you're on a call you get disconnected. Minor inconvenience I guess.

Exynos W920 - https://semiconductor.samsung.com/n...s-new-with-the-exynos-w920-in-galaxy-watch-4/
And thanks but as i said the feedback is usually old and Samsung usually provides updates every month (or almost).
