OP6 + Google Dialer = Vo VVM - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

Coming from a OP5T, using the Google Dialer with T-Mobile here in the US, my visual voice mail (VVM) worked as expected. However, on the OP6, I can not enable VVM. When I go to Settings -> Voicemail there is not option to turn VVM on/off as there is on my OP5T. Anyone else seeing this issue our know how to fix it? I can put SIM back in the OP5T and VVM will work on it....

I'm wondering if you're actually using the Google Dialer, because that's not what comes on the phone. I'm using the modded Google Dialer on T-Mobile and visual voicemail is working fine for me. I didn't have to change any settings other than change the default phone app to the modded Google Dialer.

I was using the Google Dialer from Magisk. Mind to point me to where you got your modded Google Dialer?

Can you check your settings on your Google Dialer? When I go to settings -> voicemail, I do not have an option to enable visual voicemail. see attached image.

My settings look like yours.
I'm not too familiar with VVM, but I assume you just mean the tab for voicemails with the play/pause/delete buttons for each voicemail? If so, that's working for me. If it's something more, then I'm not sure. My voicemail is empty right now so I can't show you what it looks like, but I had a few voicemails earlier and I deleted them from that tab. I can't send myself a test message until tomorrow when I have access to a second phone.
I just changed over to the Magisk version, since the modded version I had made the notification answer/decline buttons not work, so I wouldn't recommend it. But it can be found here.

I did notice that the voicemail tab wasn't there until I enabled phone permissions for Google Dialer app. But I'm guessing that's too obvious to be your problem.

Yeah, I am the one who originally made the Magisk version so it would work with OnePlus devices.... It's odd, my will not retrieve voicemails from T-Mobile but my OP5T would do just fine. For now, I just reverted to the google voice method and that is working. Odd.

So after testing today I'm leaving myself a few voicemails, neither the modded version of the dialer or the Magisk version seem to be showing the voicemails. I guess I might have seen them in the OnePlus dialer and that's where I deleted them. I can't be one hundred percent sure.
For now, I am just using the T-Mobile visual voicemail app.

Yeah, that is exactly what I see. It works on stock app, but not Google Dialer. I am using the Google Voice method, and it does the trick for now.

What is the Google voice method?

Sorry, not to change subject, but the Magisk version of the Google Dialer support the Spam call detection? Figured I'd ask since both of you seem to be running that version.

I was using the modded Google dialer as well on my OP6 and had no Visual Voicemail option, only with the stock dialer do I have any VVM option.

Is that the same thing I am doing -- I have Verizon set to NOT send my missed calls to voicemail, but to forward it to my Google Voice number. Then my Google Voice is set to immediate Do Not Disturb and goes to voicemail.
I did that because Verizon's stupid free voicemail doesn't transcribe the whole thing and they make you pay to have more than 20 voicemails in queue.

[Q] NS4G Google Voice without Sprint integration

Hey guys,
I don't know if any of you have encountered this problem, but it seems that it not possible to use the GV app on a Sprint phone without the Sprint integration. I removed the settings for the GV app on my NS4G and now when I try to set up GV again, I only get the one of two options 1) port my Sprint # to GV, or 2) use my GV # for outgoing calls. I want to do neither, and yet use GV for outgoing international calls. This is how it works on other providers, and I was able to do so earlier on Sprint as well, but now it seems like full integration is the only way to go on Sprint.
Is there a workaround?
Update google voice from the market and when you first open google voice, hit "skip" on the first page instead of "next". It will then assign you a different google voice # other than your integrated one

Thank you very much! I didn't realise there was an update in the market that fixes this. I guess upgrading to 2.3.5 must've killed whatever updates the app had. It works as expected now.

Glad to here it.
I'm having similar problems... At first, all of my calls went through google voice and I had no option to change it... I called Sprint, and the representative said she had to "undo it from her side"...
Now no matter what I do, when I call it will not use my google voice number at all... This worked fine on AT&T, and on my first Evo 3D (sprint and it overheated so I got it exchanged)
I just want to use it in a similar way to how the OP did... the widget even has the "Use for all calls" selected and greyed out...

Any way to install Google Phone?

It seems that the stock Huawei dialer isn't fully compatible with using Google Voice to make calls. Sometimes it uses the GV number, sometimes the SIM number. I know the workaround would be to make calls directly from the Hangouts app, but that's not helpful in areas without great signal. Does anyone have a way to install the stock Google Phone app? I know it can be added as a system app, but as far as I know we currently lose mods to system on reboot... (Unless I'm wrong on that?)
Thanks!

Yep. The more recent dialers are looking for the associated framework, so they complain the phone is not compatible. I tried an older version that would install and it functions okay...but when dialing out the stock Huawei dialer takes over to actually make the call. (Even after changing the phone app in defaults.)

DAMN. This sucks for me. I just got my mate 9 but I need to switch from verizon to a GSM provider. So no old dialers work?

Hmmm...not sure what you mean. I'm not aware of any way to place a call directly from the Google Voice app? It just allows you to specify whether the default phone app should dial via Google Voice, which works about 1 out of 5 times when it's turned on.

Hmm nvm I thot u could guess it just takes u to the default dialer.
It seems that no matter what you choose as the default dialer app, the Huawei remains the default. I've tried a few different dialer replacements, same results. I've seen the same comment on other Huawei forums as well...

Can't select Google Voice for Voicemail on Galaxy S7 T-Mobile? Please help!

In phone settings, under voicemail provider, the only option I have is Voice Mail, there's no Google Voice option like they're used to be. I uninstalled and reinstalled Google Voice, went through setup, still no option under voicemail provider. All voicemails open with the standard phone app and it dials into voicemail...
Does anyone know what is wrong? Thanks.
Same here. Think it has to do with the recent update for Google Voice.
Edit: If the link below is any indication, it looks like they removed visual voicemail support for now.

Link doesn't work for me. But yeah, I figured maybe the new update broke something? No clue, but it's incredibly annoying to have to dial in to my voicemail.
It is.
I reverted to the old version (you can google the last apk, I think it's 4.7.10 or something like that) until this is fixed.

That's an error that has persisted for years. Go into Google voice, choose to have it handle voicemail. Go to the normal phone dialer, go to settings, go to voicemail, choose voice. Then, go back to the dialer and dial *73 followed directly by your Google voice number (I.e. If my Google voice number is 9734546666, I dial *739734546666), it'll ring half a ring and then hangs up, confirming your voicemail is now forwarding to Google voice.
Trust me. I've been a sprint user for 18 years and have used Google voice for my voicemails for ably 4 years. I've changed phones a number of times and this always works, just did it a week ago with my new pixel

Where do you choose to have it handle voicemail? I don't see the setting in gv website. So in the dialer there's no option but carrier either
In the app. For what we're talking about every setting is in the phone app.
In settings, you need to link your phones number into the app. Then under calls, **** forward calls, then check off your number on the page that comes up. After this, Google Voice should show up under voicemail settings in the calls section of settings under the dialer.

Weird, still no option in dialer settings. Ugh!
For some reason, I don't either now, which is weird. But it's working after I set it up in GV and dial the code *73 with my voicemail qnumber

Google voice and voicemail setting issue

YAY I get to dust off my XDA account and make a post.
So I got my t-mobile S8+ SM-G955u yesterday. I use Google voice for visual voicemail and so on. Setting up the app should be straight forward as usual but calls are not forwarded to Google Voice. They go to the default T-Mobile voicemail.
Looking a little deeper I noticed in the phone app the voicemail settings is grayed out. Service provider simply has the one option "voicemail" . Odd
So I call T-Mobile and they tell me it's a Samsung issue that I don't have access to the voicemail settings. Samsung support says it's T-Mobile whom must unlock this option. WTF?
I suppose the question I have here is. Anyone else have a T-Mobile variant with the same issue? Is this a Gvoice problem or did T-mobile really lock this down to force users to use the T-Mobile visual voicemail app?
Cheers
Noticed the same thing but when my Google voice app is installed it's still getting the voicemails and alerting me
I can't even find the voicemail setting!? Where is it?
In the "phone" app click the menu button in the top right (three dots). Then select settings. Scrollall the way down. There is a catagory listed as "voicemail" . Directly under the catagory label there are some options. Service provider is click able but only one option available. Under that Voicemail Settings are grayed out.
Still can't get Google voice to work. Sucks I like the free visual voice mail.

ah... Was looking in the settings. I don't even see google voice as an option. It's not greyed out for me, but the only vmail service provider is "my carrier". I do have google voice installed...
Weird! Same with me, but the voicemails are definitely going to google voice and delivered via hangouts (WHICH I ALWAYS HAVE TO FORCE CLOSE AND REOPEN ANY TIME I WANT TO LISTEN TO A VOICEMAIL. DRIVES ME INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Edit: I got a dup notification in google voice app... I guess I'll see if I can disable hangouts for voicemail and just use the refreshed voice app and hangouts for texting, at least until they axe google voice in hangouts. I want them to switch google voice to allo anyway, much more lightweight.
Edit 2: Looks like there is no way to block voicemail in hangouts and only get it in voice app... if anyone knows a way, please share?

Where is this option? I dont see it under Call Settings.
S8 and google voice
Call settings, more settings, then call forwarding.
If you don't know your google voice phone number log in on a computer and you will see it.
When I opened my GV application after downloading it from the Play store it prompted me if I wanted to use it for V/M, I never had to do anything to activate it in the dialer settings like I did in the past. My service is with AT&T but I don't think that would matter.
This setting is not on Sprint devices . So far I cannot get GV to work for voicemails. Mine worked the other day by doing the *28 for forwarding and broke but now tells me that feature code is not valid.

If you are on Sprint, try using *73. *28 didn't work for me, but I was able to type *73(Google voice number with area code - example *735152445611) to forward my missed calls to my google voice number. My Google voice is now working.
