Amazed at long battery life, almost 5 hours SOT time and 50 % battery usage. Just plugged in OEM charger and it's not charging. Going to settings/battery, it says, plugged in, can't charge right now. The phone is cool, and has not been used excessively. I powered it off, and now it's immediately charging ok. Powered it back on and now it's charging ok...??? Any ideas folks? Anyone seen this before?

I'm having the same issue, have sent full repro dumps to OP (in response to my filing a bug), but I haven't figured out why we're "the few", although the reports are growing, in the OP (manuf.) forum.
I can charge with my Dash charger, most times, but almost never with a regular cable, even a 2.4A source, but mostly my Qi receiver, which is good for about 550-700ma. This setup had worked on my 5T (my wife continues to use it to charge, it's just "part of the phone" for her).
Frustrating, REALLY frustrating, for a new, flagship device. I might exchange it, but I suspect it's s/w, because if I reboot, it'll charge low-current, one-time, until I stop charging, then a reboot is the only thing that allows it to work again.
"Reboot to charge", it's almost a feature, NOT ;-]
I too have really awesome battery life, once it's charged, it's really solid all-day, easily, that part is great, once I can get it charged (non-Dash) ;-]
Hi, this only ever happened once, on the first day or so that I got the phone. It's fine now, charges really fast and cool on the dash charger. Also charges fine on standard chargers, just slower

I'm sending mine back, something "weird" is up here, and even if it "feels" like s/w (the reboot "fixing it once", rinse/repeat, for example), I'm not taking any chances.

I know there is a bug in which after an overnight charge, the unit is unresponsive unitl you soft reset it. I've read the thread. My TP exhibits this problem as well. However, mine seems to have an additional problem not mentioned in that thread. After charging overnight, my TP IS NOT CHARGED! After an overnight charge, the battery is nearly dead and a soft reset does not fix that. It has happened several times now. After plugging it into the charger before bed, I confirm that the charge light is on and that it shows charging on the status screen, however, THE BATTERY IS NOT CHARGING. Has anyone else experienced this quirk? It doesn't always do this, however, so I'm very confused about what is happening.
Dumb question - but are you using the factory charger? I had a problem when I purchased my Touch Pro in the fact that I used another charger which also was USB for another phone, but for some reason had that problem. Using the charger supplied with the phone fixed it.

Yup. Factory charger and cable. Not a dumb question, BTW. That could have very well been the problem although any USB charger should work.
What about if you turn the phone off and charge?
On a related issue, I used TomTom the other day for a 1 hour trip with the phone on a USB lighter socket charger. Started with 48% full battery, when I finished the battery was down to 30%!!! Basically the phone uses more power than the USB can provide when the screen+GPS is on!! I also find plugging the phone into the charger with the screen on & WiFi on will mean the phone charges at a speed of 1% every 8 minutes - taking all day to charge from empty!
To ease the problems I purchased a separate phone+battery cradle off eBay and a spare battery. I swap to the charged battery every morning and put the other one in to charge. The used battery is usually at 25% after a good days use. Before I did this and charged using the USB plug I used to get 6 hours use before needing to re-charge.
Disconnect the cable from the factory charger and plug in in your PC, see if it charges there. If it does, then you can return your charger, if it doesn't then i'd return my TP.
I have had the Touch Pro for eleven days(got in October 31,2008) and I have issues with the phone. First, I love this phone, however, the battery will not hold a charge. I started with a fully charged battery, used sprint navigation to direct me on a 2 hour trip. My phone was dead by the time I got to my destination. The phone was extremely hot, I mean extremely hot during the entire trip. The next day I took the phone into the sprint store and they switched the battery and told me that the phone check out okay. for the next several days, i used the phone sparingly to see if the battery was okay. I made about 7 calls and 12 text messages, my battery was down 3 bars after being fully charged. I tried the navigation within the city limits and the phone again stared to get hot. My sprint picturemail would not work, it takes hours to send a picturemail. I call customer care and talked with technical support, who did not have a clue about the phone, they had me on hold, researchec, told me to do a few things and then had me to perform a hard reset. The picturemail worked for a few messages and then it started to take hours to send a picturemail. i then went into a sprint store for ready now service to see if there was something I was doing that was causing the battery loss, etc. The CSR in the store did not have a clue about the phone. He went through the computer told me a few things to do and that was it. My battery continued to perform poorly, so I again called customer care and was told afte a serious of conversations and procedures that i need to have the phone replace and that my phone could be defective. They told me to go in to a store and have them make the switch. Well, there are no phones in any of the stores in my area. I call customer care again and asked them to look at the notes on my account and send me a replacement phone, because there are none available in the stores. That was a horror story and i currently have an expensive phone that i have to keep on the charger. i actually purchased a universal charger from sprint that can be used in your car and/or in a wall socket to make certain I don't lose my charge. I think the phone is over priced for how it is operating for me. Sprint should provide an additional battery for the touch pro like they do for the Instinct. The should also include the universal charger in the box. The phone cost to much to not operate better. The sprint picture mail sucks, The sprint TV sucks, but the phone is really nice, if sprint can correct the issues mentioned.
I don't charge it at night cuz i don't like to "overcharge", so i usually charge it when i get home b4 I sleep. I have been considering getting an additional battery with a dedicated battery charger from HTC though. ever gave that a thought?
I seem to be having this same issue with my Fuze that I just got yesterday. After a full night on charger it's at 82%. I'm going to try it over usb on pc to see if it gets any higher otherwise I'll be taking it back to the store today.
The HTC touch pro (with factory ROM) is protected from overloading. Which means that overnight it will load for about 3 hours from an empty battery and then it is full (white light will go from sliding to full circle). After that the charging stops. Which means that if you sleep for 8 hours, the remaining 5 hours your phone will be using the battery.
Now the question remains, what is drianing your battery in 5 hours? The initial suspects are GPS (any GPS software should be cleared from memory, press the most right corner icon to see what's running), the wifi or the HSPA / 3G connection. Use comm manager to put those off.
Of course, the second option is that the charging is not happening because of a defect, in that case return it to the shop.
Pretty sure this is a common problem, I don't think returning the phone will solve a thing.
My phone does the same. Though if you charge it with the phone turned off, it charges fine. I purchased a separate charger and spare battery and just swap them over when I need to (1.5 days with moderate usage).
Pretty sure this is all down to the phone using more power than it should be, hopefully future rom updates will fix this. Even when using Tomtom in the car with the phone charging on a USB cigarette charge cable can't charge it - it actually has less charge at the end of a long journey.
Oh and I can also mention that I have the original HTC battery and two spare batteries (which look like copies with, the HTC sticker is there but not quite the same). The spare batteries act just the same as the original HTC battery.
I just got my Captivate a couple of days ago (refugee from a Tilt2). I am slowly learning about Android.
I used the Pimp My Android PDF, rooted the phone and installed Launcher Pro. I charged the battery overnight and a message was on the phone that it is fully charged. When I unplugged it, I immediately got a message that the battery is low and I should plug it in. I have plugged and unplugged it a couple of times and it is behaving like the battery needs to be charged.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
That doesn't sound good. May need to take it back and get a new one. The only other suggestion I have is i've seen some folks say you need to condition the battery meter so it reads right. Leave the phone unplugged until the battery is so low it's flashing... wear it almost all the way down. Then plug it in and charge it up till the "battery full" thing pops up. Wash, rinse repeat. I saw several folks say after a few times of that, the battery lasted a LOT longer. Maybe yours is just really confused or it's bad. If you don't want to take it back (considering all the stuff you've done to it) try charging/discharging a few days and see if it's any better.
That happened to me one time when charging through a front USB port on my computer. I think it was the 3rd day I had the phone. I no longer use the front port for charging or data exchange, and haven't seen the problem again.
After Spending the day with the charger plugged in, it seems to be OK now. Maybe it was something I did. I will be keeping an eye on it for a while. Thanks for your responses.
I recently received a Droid Charge from Verizon as a replacement for a Thunderbolt which was basically rendered inoperable by the May OTA update due to near constant rebooting. I really like the Charge (with the exception of that hideous brown/orange theme - some of which looks designed by 1st graders!), but I'm having a MAJOR problem with it that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else, and I'm wondering if I'm the only one suffering this issue!
I drive a tractor-trailer for a living and use Google Navigation as a back-up to a truck-dedicated GPS unit I have in my tractor. I have a dash mount that I used to keep my Thunderbolt in and I had no problems with it at all (except for the constant reboots). However, the first day I was using the Charge, the screen went dark all of the sudden after a couple of hours, and I'm like WTF?!! I couldn't get it to anything, so I pulled it out of the dash mount and let the sun shine on the screen - I saw the display was still on, but it had dimmed to the point that I couldn't see it without a light shining on it. In the middle of the screen was a dialog box with an exclamation point and the message "Charging Interrupted - battery temperature too high or too low"! I unplugged the Verizon-branded car charger and as soon as I did that, the screen became bright again, and the message disappeared. I left it like that for a while, until the low battery warning appeared. I then plugged the car charger in and let it start charging. Well, guess what? It darkened the screen again after almost 30 minutes of being connected to the car charger, and I saw the same battery temp too high message on the screen!
I have since tried to use the wall charger I got with my HTC Thunderbolt (my tractor has a power inverter in it, and electrical outlets to plug a power cord into, just like the outlets at home), but I got the same warning message on the screen. This is a REAL problem as it's basically causing the phone to be unusable, since I am not able to charge the battery when it gets low, due to the phone interrupting the charging! I went to a Verizon store, thinking it might just be a bad battery (especially because, when I first put the battery in the phone and plugged it in to charge, I got an "Incompatible battery" message on the phone). I took the battery out and reinserted it, and I never got that message again. Verizon gave me a brand-new battery, but that didn't help. They sent me another Droid Charge to replace the first one, but the 2nd one is doing the same thing!
Anybody have any idea what's going on here? I've had the same problem now with 2 seperate batteries and two seperate Droid Charge phones, but I never had that problem with my Thunderbolt, even though I used the same wall & car chargers with IT! The back of the Charge's are getting very hot, but, then again, so did my Thunderbolt, and I never had a charging issue with it. I'd really like to keep the Charge and send my Thunderbolt back to Verizon, but I can't do that without finding a solution to this problem!

I used to have this issue with several HTC phones. What happens is that if you keep the phone on the dash in direct sunlight, the battery reaches critical temperatures and to prevent the risk of failure, it stops the battery from charging. This happened all the time on my HTC phones from the Mogul 6800 to the Touch Pro. Not sure why the T-Bolt didn't have that issue, maybe it was set to a higher threshold before stopping the charging.
You may want to keep it out of direct sunlight or take the battery cover off to let more air flow in when charging on the dash.

I had the same problem. The warning message seems to be a safety feature built into the Charge that waits to charge the battery until it is cooled off.
I found that unpluging and turning off navigation for a while helped cool things off.
I also tried having the phone fully charged before using it for navigation and then plugging it in and this seemed to help. I am no expert, but it seems that when the phone is not trying to charge a battery rapidly it deals with the GPS heat better.
I hope this helps; stick with it and keep bugging Verizon!

So they sent you a Charge, but you kept the tbolt charger? And they have sent you multiple Charges and batteries, but never the correct charger? If this is right, you need to tell them to give you a Charge charger (heh). This phone seems to be pretty particular about what charges it, I can't even use a usb extension cable, so the wrong charger may be the culprit.
I've been getting this as well using CoPilot Live v8 (just upgraded to v9). I found if I turned down the screen brightness a bit, say to 80%, I could still see the screen but avoid most of the battery charging issues.
I also just purchased a Tetrax XWAY mount that will attach to an air conditioning vent. We'll see if blowing cool air onto the back will let me drive around with the brightness turned full up.
My concern with brightness all the way up is that I am not sure if the charge rate from the lighter plug will keep up with the discharge rate on the DC when everything is running full tilt...I just ordered a Tek-Tok Wireless lighter plug USB charger, Input: 12-24V DC; Output: 5.0V DC 2.1Amp! Let the frying begin!!!
p.s. I tried the Samsung/Verizon navigation mount on a 5-day trip...not too bad of a design, BUT, would not work with my extended battery and back PLUS when the DC goes into car dock mode (automatically when inserted into the navigation dock) it comes up with a screen that has a shortcut to VZ Navigator that CANNOT be edited or changed to another navigation program. You have to disable the dock in order to use another navigation program! What's with THAT, Verizon and Samsung!!! Needless to say, returned the mount yesterday...
Try turning your brightness down, make sure it's going into sleep mode and keep it out of direct sunlight
I also had the exact same overheating issue. After getting a replacement device I started looking at the charger I was using. I had been using a micro usb charger that only output 500ma. The droid charger is 1000ma (or 1 amp). Apparently I was using more power than the charger could provide. The charger couldn't keep up and I guess that must have been the issue because since switching to a 1 amp charger, I haven't had overheating issues.

Living in Miami, I have seen this message a few times after leaving the Charge in my car.
Run a free sensor program to tell you the battery temp when it does this. Mine gets up to 130 F.
If your phone isnt really at 130F, maybe something is tricking the sensor or it is faulty.
I rooted my Charge today, installing a new kernel (imnuts' PeanutButta Jelly Time) and a new ROM (GummyCHARGED 1.8.5), and I drove 3 1/2 hours from my terminal back to my home for the weekend with the Charge plugged into the charger and never once got the "battery temperature too high or too low" message!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that doing this eliminated my charging problems with the Droid - we'll see!

One thing I did to help prevent this issue when it gets to hot is to set the air vents in your car to the defroster setting, so it will blow air at the windshield, and in turn your phone on the dash. Also, taking off the back can do wonders to prevent over heating.
I thought it might be worth writing a post about my second tablet's failure before returning it as I'm not sure whether to get it fixed/replaced or look for a refund. Maybe someone has some thoughts? After suffering the apparent failure of two Note 10.1's I'm getting worried that there is something fundamentally wrong with this tablet.
Now, I should say here that my tablet was bought refurbished. It shouldn't make a difference- I've bought plenty of refurbished tech before and I've never had problems like this but I thought it might be worth mentioning.
So, the first Note arrived faulty. It would not charge above 17%. The charge up to that point was faultless... It just wouldn't go higher than 17%. That made me think it was a software issue but nothing I could do would fix it. Back it went. It was swapped on the door so I know the second tablet was an entirely new tablet (with new charger).
The second Note I received has worked for just shy of 2 months before it too is having a lot of charging issues. It will only occasionally charge now- most of the time I can leave it for hours and it won't go up 1% but every so often it'll start charging again. The lead is fine but I can't check the charger as I don't have another to try out.
Due to my paranoia of charge failure I've monitored the second tablet with 'Battery Mix'. The graph created by the app shows a perfect flat line when the ac adaptor is plugged in. That in itself seems weird... If there was no charging occurring, wouldn't the battery lose charge rather than remain at a constant level?
The flatlining behaviour is what has me worried. Both the tablets had the same issue, the first just stuck at 17% whereas the second will stick at seemingly random levels. But the symptoms of the fault are similar.
Searching the internetz reveals similar cases as mine and, seeing as a refurb device only has a years warranty, I'm not feeling particularly confident in a third Note behaving itself over the long term.
Oh, and after all that whinging... I do actually love the Note 10.1 when it works. It's a really nice bit of kit which I am loathed to have to return.
I have had fits using the supplied stock charging cable. I bought an aftermarket cable & it charges perfectly. Unfortunately, I broke the cable two days ago & had to use the stock supplied cable. Charging is so slow it is ridiculous. I plugged it in yesterday morning at 7% & today, 20 hours later, it is only at 22%.
With the after market cable, it would charge to 100% from 3% in about 3-5 hours.
Just to follow up, I picked up a Samsung dock for the Tab 10.1 & used the charging cable from that to test it & my Note 10.1 started charging very quickly. It went from 21% to 56% in about 30 minutes.
I have no idea why the stock cable is so bad with charging, but it is definitely the culprit.
The Tab 10.1 dock is currently on clearance at my local Verizon store for $10. I am going to swing by later & grab the other one they had for a spare.
Cable is a noted problem in other Sammy forums on XDA .

I'm not sure the lead is the problem in my case although this is all just speculation on my part. I guess it makes sense in some ways- the charging became intermittent when plugged in which fits with the dodgy lead idea but when it played up it would just sit on whatever percentage it had been on when I plugged it in. Surely a bad lead would result in more uneven results rather than no change in charge (up or down) after hours of AC power?
I'm now kicking myself that I didn't save a screenshot of the behaviour as seen on the graph created by 'Battery Mix'. It was quite literally a straight horizontal line, no charge up and no discharge down. Most odd.
Fingers crossed the tablet will come back fixed. I have a fear it's going to behave itself as soon as it arrives to be tested but hey ho... We shall see. When it returns I'll definitely be investing in a third party lead.
With the original supplied charging cable plugged into the tablet, the device would drop in charge while in use. Meaning, it wasn't drawing enough/any power while in use. Also, it would sit at 22%. Never go any higher. I left it plugged in for 2 days & it never reached higher than 22%. This is on Jellybean. If I switched back to ICS, it would charge just fine.
I found several threads on the web stating exactly the same behavior.
I have since purchased 2 spare cables from Amazon, 2 Samsung branded travel chargers, & a Power+ travel charger, & ALL of them charge the tablet quickly & to 100%.
If I switch back to the supplied cable, it actually drops charge while in use.
I promise you, it is not the tablet.

It has been charging successfully overnight since I got the phone about 3 weeks ago. However, for the last two days, I wake up to find the phone has stopped charging at 80% and 84% yesterday and today, respectively. Also, the phone is INSANELY hot to the touch, to the point that it is unsafe to hold. I have to set it aside to cool for a few minutes before I can handle it.
Yesterday, I thought it was a one time glitch, and that I hadn't placed the phone properly in the charger. But last night I was careful to lay it in the charger so the green light activated. No improvement, same result.
Notes:
- The phone is in a Spigen case
- I do NOT have Developer Options enabled
- Stock Android, locked, unrooted
- YES, the screen times out after about 2 minutes (does NOT stay awake)
Any ideas? I'm really worried about the phone getting this hot and not charging.

its probably your charger. mine gets warm but nothing insane. i charge during the day in my cube and typically have a full charge when i leave, and it lasts all night till i get back to work. so i basically sit by my charging phone all day and its never really caused me any concern. i have a knock off "qi compatible" charger from ebay. works great for $20
Holy s*it that thing is expensive. Sounds like there is a process that is getting triggered by charging and running the cpu to 100%. Think about a new app installed since heating started. Ordered 2 of these with no odd heating of device.
Off topic: What would developer options being enabled or disabled have to do with wireless charging? (just wondering)

Also try charging in short half and hour to one hour time frames until you know it is not truth so hot.

Mine doesn't get noticeably warmer charging on the Nokia Qi plate than it does over USB. Maybe you should contact Tylt.

Developer Options is where the "stay awake while charging" setting is. I just wanted to make it clear that I didn't have that setting enabled. That's all.

Thanks for all of the help everyone, hopefully this was just a random incident. It's charging fine now at work: on the VU, in the case, at 100%, no overheat. Weird. I'll try it again overnight tonight and see what happens.
Or maybe the case causes the heat because of the added distance between the charge pad and the coils in the phone? Dunno if that's possible tho? Lol

There's something about that Tylt Vu charger that sometimes doesn't recognize when the phone is fully charged and go into trickle-charge mode, as it should. (Although I've never heard a conclusive answer as to why the battery is usually found at a low charge percentage, so there may be another reason.) There are numerous reports of overheating with that specific charger. It doesn't happen all the time, and in fact, many people report that it works fine for weeks, then one day it does this, then works fine for weeks again. Still, it's a VERY common problem with that charger, and it only takes one time overheating to damage your battery.
I'd contact the manufacturer and see what they'll do about it (refund, working on a fix, etc.). In the meantime, you could try the Nokia DT-910. It's a similar stand-up type charger, and doesn't seem to suffer from the same problem.

I realize this thread is old but this happened to me last night. I woke up this morning to my Nexus 5 shut off (it was turned on when I placed it on the charger) on the Tylt Vu charger and when I picked the phone up I couldn't hold it comfortably. It physically hurt to hold my finger on the screen. I have never felt a phone that hot before. I would imagine it shut down due to heat but shutting it down didn't stop it from continuing to charge in some sort of error state.
I am done with wireless charging. I am actually curious what would have happened if I had left it all day. I truly believe I'd have ruined my phone or started a fire.
