[Q] Battery Staying at 100%

I've noticed that the battery meter will sometimes stay at 100% for a while and then all of the sudden drop to the actual percentage sometime later. A reboot after unplugging the phone will fix the problem and report the battery % at the correct level. I was wondering how many other people were experiencing this, or if it is just a hit or miss thing?
I'm still on stock, unrooted, no mods. It's a straight out of the box Skyrocket.
Also, does the problem remain after rooting, modding, etc.?
I asked this on the battery results thread in general, and only received one response, so I figured this would be better in Q&A.

I had the same issue, but it has only happened one or two times.
Showed 100% for hours then rebooted and it showed 73%

I don't know how long you've had your phone, but it takes several cycles from full to empty for the battery to calibrate correctly. During that time you can get some really funky readings on it.

I am experiencing the same problem.
I've also had a hard time charging the phone. I've left it plugged in upwards of 18 hours, only to find it saying its only 83% charged. That may just be another symptom of the same problem though.
Do you think this is a phone or a battery issue?

That sounds like you were plugged into a pc vs ac power and had heavy usage during that time.
Mine charges very quickly when at idle and plugged into the wall.

I've had my phone since the day it launched (the 6th) and just experienced this for the first time yesterday. It was indeed quite odd to see.

I have had this happen one time. I also noticed the phone got very hot.

It actually happend yesterday, stayed at 100% almost all day then just shut off and wouldnt reboot.... freaked me out!!

I have had this issue only when using an old iphone wall charger have. i can charge with any of our multiple other chargers with no issue....i use a usb cable plugged onto that apple wall charger and it happens every single time

I think that the battery is pretty wonky. I am not sure if the NFC addition is causing these issues but some people are having amazing life ans some people (me included) get horrible. I am getting a warranty exchange on my battery. No way I should drop 12% in an hour and 20 minutes when the only usage is 19 minutes of checking email. If I have to have it plugged in every time I turn around it is not exactly a wireless device now is it?

i think that u just solved my and many more ppl's problem i am using the same iphone wall charger and i just plugged my usb in there and the battery wouyld stay at 100% all day long and when i connect the charger it says "disconnect charger battery is full" but i think this will solve my problem man thank u very much for posting this ! im glad ive read it because this is the my second galaxy s2 with the same problem i went to the warranty and the exchange it but still the same problem so now i know it HAS to be the iphone charger!!

Strange, I was just reading this thread and thinking I have never experienced this. Then I checked my battery stat and it showed 100% even though I've been using it for an hour and a half. I restarted and now reads 90%.
Had my phone for almost a month. Rooted only on stock ROM. Just took it off USB cable from laptop an hour and a half ago.

I had the same issue. But I read on a thread that cause is that u use a charger & cable that is not Samsung. I had tested and it is true. If u charge with the charger it will befine

I think we narrowed it down to being a bad charging circuit in the phone or battery triggered by a .1a charger.
When we got our new skyrockets they stopped doing it.

I was powering my phone off, plugging the power in and allowing it to recharge. The phone would automatically power on as soon as I connected the power but I didn't think that mattered. It turns out it did. If I powered the phone on and then connected the power, the battery meter would work correctly.
This was different the Captivate I had previously. That phone had the capability to charge while powered off. There was even a charging graphic that displayed while the phone was off.
The Skyrocket did not have this same feature when I originally bought it. However, ATT did an update at some point and now it does. I've been unable to re-create the stuck battery gauge since that update.

Its more than just the charger. The phones experiencing this either have a bad battery or it's in the phone

From day 1 with the skyrocket, I have used an old wall charger and cable and had this problem daily. I plug it in at night and in the morning, it's at 100% until I reboot, or some other random event that drops the percentage to the real battery stats.
Because of this thread, I dug out the box and used the wall charger and cable that came with it, and this morning shortly after unplugging the phone, it was at 99% and dropping, just as it should. Very glad I tried this.

I did a recheck of my black cube SR wall charger (Samsung part # ETA0U80JBE).. It is NOT .1a it is 1.0amps - which - interestingly enough is EXACTLY what my iPhone3g power cube right next to it delivers.
The .7am Samsung charger has the usb connector on the side, and is part number ETA0U60JBE - delivering 5v at .7 amps (30% decrease over the little cube device). That was the charger my SGS-II had. My S/R came with the 1.0 amp ETA0U80JBE version.
One amp will charge the phone MUCH faster than the USB port. Per the spec, the typical USB device cannot drain more than 500mA (1/2 of what the power cube supplies to the phone).
Unfortunately Apple and Samsung both have the cubes pretty well locked up, so I cant compare the components, but at a first glace they appear to be absolutely identical, both putting out about 5.1 volts at zero load.

Losing charge while charging

Has anyone else noticed that it is possible to lose more battery than gain while charging our phone? Last night I had it on the charger while downloading stuff via torrents. This morning I woke up and saw my phone was at 45%. I know why the battery drained, but I just wanted to see if anyone else noticed this?

I have never had this problem, but granted I do not do things as demanding as torrents on my phone. Could it be other problems such as overclocking your phone, or possibly a bad kernel?

I have this issue in my car. The car USB can only provide up to 500mA of current at 5V to the phone. When I have the screen on along with music playing, LTE enabled, and navigation going, it will certainly lose charge while charging. I'm looking to modify it to provide up to 1.25A. In any case, the stock charger is 1A. Even though with all that going on (screen and navigation are power hogs), 500mA is barely enough as I'll lose about 1% every half hour. Maybe you can try plugging into a higher capacity converter (maybe borrow one from someone, or have one lying around?) lets say 2A (that's what i'm using, I found one with my HP touchpad) and see how that works.
In the end, I still say 1A is sufficient even with that going on, so it sounds like somethings askew with your phone IMHO.

It's happened to me on my Droid X2 with Netflix over 3G. What surprises me is that the screen wasn't on and you were going over WiFi. If I were you, I'd try a different charger in the exact same scenario.

Were your torrents legal? If they weren't, maybe it was the electronic Karma catching up with you!

I agree, your charger you used must have a problem with it. Or not be made for a smartphone.
Only time Ive ever run into this was when I tried using my iPod charger(5v) on my iPad 3 which needs a 10v charger. Was the charger itself hot?

Well idk if it was hot because I was asleep. When I woke up it was normal. And it cant be the charger because it was the charger that came with it. I haven't experienced it since but I just saved that screenshot just in case.

I notice this issue more often when using the stock charger that came with the phone more than my other chargers. I have an OEM spare battery and battery charger so it doesn't effect me much but it is a bit frustrating when i do need to plug in.

I only noticed this after flashing the unlocked aboot.

This was the first thing I noticed about my phone before I even rooted that surprised me.

Happens to me also. I'd say even with moderate use and the charger that came with the phone, it's only able to hold a charge. A 3D game would cause the charge to drop pretty well
I did notice with imo's kernel and ffc (force fast charge) on the phone would hold the charge much better or continue charging - but it would get much hotter of course

This happened to me a few times but I just threw the cord away and bought a new phone. Hasn't even come close to happening since. I'd look into a new charger for sure

Happens to me too
I noticed that also.
Doesn't matter what level my battery is when I plug it in, it goes down 5-14% before it begins to increase.
Noticed one time when I was cycling the battery and plugged it in at 10%. The phone actually shut off while being plugged in!
Now I just don't let it get that low anymore but it always goes down before going up.

Not sure if this is related to 4.4 or the nexus 5 specifically (pretty sure its the hardware). While using the phone during charging it doesn't charge fast enough to keep powered on. My wife was on facebook when hers went down, and I was playing knights of pen and paper when mine went down. The phone will eventually just power off and flash the red led 8 times. The only way to power it back on is to load the bootloader first (vol up + vol down + power) then press the power on start. I tested this on 2 black 32GB Nexus 5s with android 4.4.
This is really easy to test, next time your device is low keep using it after plugging it in. It will eventually just "go dark" and you'll be greeted by the flashing red led.
Here is a link to the google group product forum thread I created, please post feedback. This needs to get fixed, hopefully just an update can resolve it.

Yikes. This isn't good. The only time the phone may not be able to keep up with charge is when using GPS. If this is a widespread issue I'm sure it will be fixed. Unless you have a bad battery or charger! I will test..

Just played game Aurolux whilst charging for 10 minutes and phone gained 5%.

I tested it on both mine and my wifes phones, different chargers as well. Also the load on the devices was low, both were on wifi, she was using the facebook app, I was playing knights of pen and paper, both on auto brightness (in our living room, lights off). Same thing happened on both, screen just cuts out, red light starts flashing.
Hopefully it gets fixed, if more people will test it and post feedback here or at googles forum it would be great.

I've used the phone for hours while plugged into mains power and haven't had any issues ?

Same here. Zero issues playing games and phone charges.
Are you using a custom ROM or kernel? That could explain it. Otherwise you either have two did chargers, or 2 did batteries, or a combination of both.

How low was the charge on the phone? Both of ours were under 10% when we plugged them in and kept on them. Both phones are completely stock.

I guess I could try to charge when it's below 10%, but maybe easier is if you try charging whilst using your phone above say 20%. If you still have the issue then I think it's device related, if not report back.

I'm gonna give that a shot tomorrow. Its getting late and need to get up for work in a couple hours. Thanks for testing, makes me wonder though if it is my phones, or if its and issue with a low battery and charging/using.....maybe something related to the reason why you cant do an update until your battery is at 20% despite being connected to a charger.

you have faulty devices or chargers. my N5 charges super fast. over 1% per minute(until 80%) while it is on and being used

They seem to charge just fine when left alone. It just seems too coincidental that both phones would have the exact same power issue.

I agree... Since first replying to this thread I've gained 29% more battery and have been using phone constant. It charges really fast.

dont forget, the snapdragon has 'quick charge 2.0', you shouldn't be seeing that kind of charging issues. i mean, if it's something you're ok living with. but that sounds like a big indicator that the battery or charging module is faulty/will go bad soon

No I'm already getting mine replaced for dead pixels but to have 2 phones experience the same issue like this is weird. Need more people to test the phones under 10%, I know they charge fast but there could be a reason why behind this like I listed above.

The only thing I notice is the charger does get quite warm when charging, but it's very fast.
It does sound too coincidental, but not impossible.

could it possibly be the cable, or the charger unit, or even the wall socket? these are all things that should be tested

I just wanted to say that I had the same issue as you and the problem so far seems to happen when you let the battery get pretty low before plugging it in.
The battery was down to about 8% when I plugged the phone in last night (to the lg charger). I actually left mine alone for about 30 minutes and when I came back, it was at 6%. I did verify that the display said "Charging" when the cable was plugged in. I unplugged the phone, and plugged it back in and started browsing the web on wifi and within another 15 minutes the battery had gone down to 2%. I turned off the screen and left it alone and when I checked it again, it was at 1%. At that point, I was worried about the phone, so I urned off the phone completely. When I turned it back on, it did look like it was charging again, but very slowly. At this point, I tried plugging it into another charger that I had, and it charged up fairly quickly.
Definitely pretty frustrating as I've never had something like this happen unless you have the usb cable plugged into a computer.

Last night I went to plug my phone into the lg charger...I could hear the charger buzzing slightly....I plugged in the phone and thought nothing of it really... Looked at my phone on the way to work and it wasn't charged past 28%.... plugged it into another charger at my desk and its at 47% in a matter of minutes...
I know op said he tried different chargers, but just tossing in my lousy 2c

The only chargers I tried were the ones that came with the phones. I got a bunch of others so Im going to give them a shot as well and see how this fairs.

Ok so Im sitting here trying to recreate the issue and it is different. I brought the battery down to 4% plugged it in and kept playing kop&p and the battery hasnt gone down, it actually went up to 7% but its holding there. I am letting it get to 10% now before I pick it up and try again. I swapped out between the n5 charger and my n4 charger both held it at 7% while playing.
Maybe this just has to do with battery conditioning, or maybe the snapdragon quickcharge ic.
Just checked the phone, from the time I started writing this till now (maybe 2 minutes) its up to 10% so back at it I go.

The charger that comes with the phone is horrible. Its the same type as the n4 which dies after 2 months. Don't use it, just use another one and you'll be just fine.

[Q] Qi Wireless Charging and Overheating [TYLT VU Specific]

I purchased the Tylt Vu wireless charger for my N5 and N7. Last night, before I went to bed, I charged the N7. In the middle of the night, I switched out the N7 and charged the N5. When I woke up this morning, the phone was too hot to touch, and had been powered down (as designed, based on the heat). It took about 5 minutes before the phone was cool enough to power on.
A couple questions: Can such extreme (??) heat do permanent damage to the phone? Has anyone else had this problem with the Tylt Vu wireless charger? The phone wasn't off-center, and nothing appeared abnormal when I set it on the charger. I wonder if transitioning from the N7 to the N5 so quickly caused an abnormality?

I haven't been following this thread, as I decided after my overheating incident to no longer use the Tylt Vu with my Nexus 5. I was also a bit turned off by the response I received from Tylt.
I take no credit for the following information, I am only summarizing this thread to save you time.
The Tylt Vu is defective. It contains three charging coils that help it to charge any device without having to be finicky about positioning. However, unless you set the Nexus 5 onto the Tylt Vu in a specific manner, the third (top) coil will remain activated, resulting in overheating due to the magnets present in the Nexus 5. (Oversimplified explanation... read the chain for specifics.)
The "right way" is to set the Nexus 5 down in the crevice of the Vu, perpendicular to the earth, and then pivot it down to rest on the back of the Vu. The wrong way is to slide it down the back, or otherwise set it on the Vu in a way where it is not touching the short base first. (See post #118.) You can also permanently disable the third coil by opening up the Tylt. All of this applies to charging the N5 in portrait mode.
A big thanks to NCguy for his persistence throughout the thread, to Mr. Sprinkles for his theory and relentless testing, to jelledgeu2 for the "solution", and every other poster who has shed some light on this. And a big 'no thanks' to Tylt for their response to the issue.
tl;dr: Always be vigilant on how you set the N5 on the Tylt Vu, or charge the N5 on the Tylt Vu at your own risk.

I have a Vu shipping now, I will report my experiences. Both of my boys have nexus 7's and will watch those too. Tyvm for the heads up...

Were you able to successfully charge it before and this just happened the night when you switched from N7 to N5 ?. I don't think overheating damages any electronics because it is designed to shut off.

I can confirm that I have experienced this with the same set up (n5+TYLT VU), although I also have the Spiegen Slim Armour. This happened though only once, when I was at work and the phone was baked like a hot potato!
Since then I have been coy about leaving it on the charger unattended - I have checked the phone regularly since,. both after and during long charges - the problem has not happened again.

Thanks for the heads up, as I am looking at purchasign the Tylt Vu.
The only thing I can say is that heat can definitely cause degredation of the battery. Besides that, there should be no signicant damage to the phone.

Thanks, everyone. I was able to charge both the N5 and N7 twice before without any troubles. I'm a little skeptical about leaving anything on it to charge unattended now -- my N5 was untouchably hot this morning. I've emailed Tylt to ask if they have any background/information on what could cause this to happen. I'll let you know if I hear back.

i use the nexus orb charger at work and the LG 700 charger at home. While the phone can get a little warm, I certainly wouldn't consider it hot.

It never charged. The phone was at 70% when I put it on the charger. When I woke up, once I was finally able to boot it up, it was at 73%. It was scary hot.

It never charged. The phone was at 70% when I put it on the charger. When I woke up, once I was finally able to boot it up, it was at 73%. It was scary hot.

yes! I bought 2 tylt vu's from kickstarter and experienced exactly the same overheating problem. It was overnight and there was no charge on the battery in the morning with it still at 54% and very hot. It's possible that that the phone may have become mis-aligned on the charger but its unlikely. I just didn't happen to notice before I grabbed it off the charger. I can't explain how it happened and its only happened once....... so far.
In general the phone is alarming warm even when its working. The battery temp is usually around 110+ F even after it finishes charging. This compares with a battery temp of around 80F with the USB charger.
I'm not an expert but I'm thinking that the battery heat is not being generated by the battery itself internally but possibly by a heat transfer as a result of the induction. If that is in fact the case then maybe the warmer battery isn't as bad as it would be if it were in fact generated internally in the battery as is typically the result of a high charge/discharge rate.
So my concerns are two fold, the one-time completely unacceptable high overheating and the ongoing situation where it is always 20-40 degrees higher while on the tylt than it would be plugged into the USB charger.
I wouldn't be too concerned except that replacing a battery in an N5 is not like replacing a battery in a phone with a removable battery.

Wow... I wasn't expecting two people to have had identical experiences. Slightly concerning, however, it sounds like it's only happened once for each of you (NCguy, Drizwaldo1). I hesitantly charged my N5 again on it tonight. I watched it closely and pulled it off when it hit 100%. No problems, and only moderately warm (as is typical for wireless charging). I would chalk this morning's incident up to a fluke and forget about it if the phone hadn't been so insanely (explosively!?!) hot this morning...

I have a tylt but I have not tried it yet on the N5. I use a Nokia qi charger primarily and have not had an issue. Only have the phone since the 8th. I just got a spigen case. Let's see how that works out.

Are you guys at all concerned about premature battery wear with the battery temp 20-30 degrees higher than the usb charger? That's when its working "normally" and with a tylt.

I'm not overly concerned about it, primarily because I get a new phone almost every year and expect the stock battery to be sufficient for at least that amount of time even with degradation. Worst case scenario, it doesn't sound like it would be hard to swap it out (based on iFixit's assessment). I'm more worried about doing irreversible damage to the internal components if it overheats again like it did on the Tylt.

My Nexus 4 got a lot warmer on the Qi charger than my N5 does, and it's battery showed no ill effects. So no, I'm not worried about my N5.

I just purchases the Vu charger as well to pair with my Nexus 5 and 7. I hope the overheating thing isn't common... I'm a bit worried.
Please continue reporting. I'll do the same once I receive my Vu.

I was quite close to buying the Tylt vu despite the very high price tag.

I hope you're right. I'll probably go for it also. Hopefully I won't have to do an ifixit battery replacement but it doesn't look too awfully bad if it comes to that. I keep them a year but then usually pass on to my wife who would rather not be leading edge. I probably should give it to her with a decent battery. Unfortunately non-removable batteries s##k.

Found a post on another forum about the N4 doing the same thing (got so hot it shut off, never charged), he said resetting the phone cured it. Sounds like a software glitch to me.

any new updates or issues that has occurred? I have my tylt coming in a few days and wondering if I should just return it for the DT-900.

I set my N5 on my charger (it was at 90%) after lunch and then walked away from my desk. I got back to my desk and saw the LED blinking from a text message so I turned the screen on and realized it was SUPER hot and the charge was only at 81% even though it had the lightning bolt over the battery icon as if it is charging.
Has anyone else had this happen and should I be worried it damaged my phone?? The phone was almost too hot to handle, so I turned it off immediately in hopes it would cool down faster/reduce the harm to hardware.
I've been using the charger without any issues for over a month now, but this might be the last time I trust it.

This is a known issue with the TYLT and the N5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2571188
You can try turning off Day Dream. This will help some.

I'm really curious as to what's causing this because I've been using the TYLT daily for a few weeks and my phone doesn't even get warm. Kinda nervous to continue using it though.

Wireless charging already can heat up the phone by a few more degrees then using a wire.
People are then doing things such as Daydream or simply running apps which are causing the phone to have a high current draw which could potentially cause issues such as:
-using more power then is being provided
-getting very hot from being both used and charged at the same time.

Welp. Unfortunately, it looks like I can be added to the list of those who have been "burned" by the Tylt Vu. I've been using two different ones for about two weeks now with no issues at all. The hottest my N5 would ever get would be around 37C (but it would usually hover around 34-35C). I've been keeping an eye on the battery temp since reading all these horror stories of overheating. Tonight, it was charging fine when I picked my phone up to check a text and mess around for a couple minutes. When I put it back on, it was probably around 37-38C or so. I was sitting next to it and touched the screen to check the temp, and it felt REALLY hot (only about 5-10 minutes after setting the phone back down to charge). So I took it off and the battery temp was showing 49.5C with "health" saying "overheating". I always make sure the screen is turned off after putting it on the charger, so I know it wasn't in daydream or anything. Kinda freaked me out. I love these chargers, but my faith in leaving them unattended while charging is now shaky at best.

When it happened to me I never turned the screen on during charging either.
And for the record I have never used the Daydream feature :-/
I was excited at first of the premise of wireless charging particularly to cut down on wear and tear to the micro USB port, but now I'm back to the old fashioned way.
