HTC Unlock Policy - HTC U12+ Questions & Answers

I'm looking for a new phone and want one I can easily unlock the bootloader on, with no notch. I'm looking at an S9 but now there is a 7-day wait and other hoops to jump through with one variant. Huawei just caved.
Are HTC phones easy to bootloader unlock?
Can I get a US carrier unlocked version, or would I need an international version?

HTC allows for unlocking your bootloader via htcdev.com within a few minutes. Thus it is really easy to unlock every HTC device. Doesn't matter which variant you buy, as all are unlockable via the mentioned website. You should decide which variant you buy according to the carrier you gonna use it on.

Thanks for the quick reply. Just double-checking this though...
Carriers in the US also lock the bootloader of phones from multiple manufacturers.
I'm not familiar with the HTC model. Do they sell through carriers, or direct like OnePlus?

Verizon is selling it, but in most regions you got to buy it from HTC right away. You might register to the HTC Club using your email to see if there's a 10% discount available, as e.g. on HTC Club in Germany.

No carrier is carrying the U12+. It's certified to work on Verizon but Verizon will not be carrying it. It's either through HTC direct or Amazon. Either way since it's not carrier locked or through them you should be able to unlock the bootloader rather easily.

how can i get htc u11+'s roms?
i cannot find them anywhere

According to HTC's product guy at Wednesday's HTC U even in NYC all U12+ are essentially the same, unlocked phones.

It is certified by T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon, regardless which version you buy, I was told by an HTC product guy. As for T-Mobile I can attest to this: wifi calling is always a PITA but I opened my unlocked one from the box on the spot, put it on the bar's wifi, disabled mobile data and voila, wifi calling worked right away with my very first call, straight out of the box (usually never the case with a phone you didn't buy from TMO.)

Easy
You can unlock the bootloader in settings in the htc 12. Go to settings, system, about phone, software information, more, then tap build number multiple times to unlock developer options go to them and OEM bootload unlock will be a switch a few down in the settings.

this is NOT the unlock bootloader method. it just disables the security so you can use HTCdev step by step guide to unlock it

Piggybacking on what DeeZZ said, it disables the security so you can use the HTCdev website. I would follow it pretty closely. Be sure you have USB debugging enabled and you are savvy with adb and fastboot commands. As always PERFORM A BACKUP after booting twrp and flashing the twrp installer. Keep a RUU handy as well.

Are they though? Maybe in the US - however, internationally, my U12+ has FeLiCa on it, which the US version doesn't

Like I told the other guys, when you start to build a new thread there are suggestions for existing threads. Meaning, you didn't search, you didn't read the suggestions, you didn't so much as look on the forum period.
If the device is rooted why are there no custom roms for the verizon s3? What am I missing, does it have to be unlocked also?

Very few people have this phone right now. The date for in store sales keeps getting pushed back, and even a lot of pre order dates are getting pushed back. Wait till the phone is more widely available so devs can get their hands on it.

Is the phone released officially? Nope. Do most dev's even have it yet? Nope. Do dev's build ROM's overnight with a phone they don't have access to? Nope. Chill out!

Doesn't matter what you "heard" it isn't Verizon that provides the coverage, Asurion does, unless you have it from another source. Verizon has no say in Asurion protecting hardware malfunctions. Verizon may not WARRANTY the device though.

[Completed] New LG G2 phone - this phone is permanently locked and cannot be unlocked

Well as my unfortunate luck has it, I wanted to upgrade my old Nexus 4 to a LG G2 D801 unit. I bought one new-refurbished off ebay and it just arrived recently.
I tried to put in my WIND mobile sim card and realized the phone is not detecting it. After looking into the issue for the majority of the day, it seems that the phone is hard/sim locked.
I went into the area where one would go to unlock the phone, only to be greeted by this unfortunate message.

Now first thing I did was start searching the interwebz....and I can't seem to find much on this.
I am not sure what I can do. The shipping back to China, well that's out of the question due to the high cost.
I can't use the phone as it's a T-Mobile device.
I can't unlock the phone because it's hard locked.
Is there anything I can do to get it working? Does anybody know how I could possibly reset the counter for this?
Thank you in advance.

Hi and thank you for using XDA Assist
Unfortunally the phone is locked and only the T-Mobile carrier can work on it .
It is locked from factory default state. So there is nothing you can do to unlock it (from what i know).

Hello, thanks for the reply. That's unfortunate for me I guess.
Now when you say, it's locked from the factory default state...If I drive down to the states and buy a T-Mobile LG G2 from the store, would that be also hardlocked?
I am trying to send this phone back to China and I know T-Mobile stores still have the LG G2 as certified pre-owned.

Yes if you buy another T-Mobile phone, you will stick on T-Mobile only and you will not have the ability to use other carrier other than T on that phone... But you will still be able to Root and make all those stuff but to change carrier will not be able to.

Thank you Nilac.
I am a bit confused. The phone I received, it seems like the SIM code unlock was entered 10 times wrong and thus is why the phone is hard locked to T-mobile now.
If I buy a phone from the T-Mobile store, it will be hardlocked also? I don't understand why it would be, since many people have those phones unlocked?

Unlocked but not "Unlocked" from carrier they still stick with that carrier.
If you are looking for example on the S6 forum you will see that there are separated forums for Verizon, T-Mobile etc... They are separated because the phone is not exactly the same as the international model as the carrier modified it, so a separated development needs to be done for that phone.....
You simply cannot uncarrier (from what i know) only if you took your phone to a professional guy who is super expert and can do it, but from what i know it's impossible to uncarrier a phone.... Better always to get an international one in order to avoid these problems

I think maybe I confused you or myself.
The T-Mobile LG G2 will work on the AWS frequency that I require here in Canada for WIND mobile.
If the phone is locked to T-mobile, I could use a service online, provide them the IMEI and the network the phone came from and then I would be given the unlock code to allow the phone to read a SIM card other then T-Mobile.
Example video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m4ru062k_M
Notice when he puts in the prompt to get to the network settings, he can put in a PIN. When I tried that, I get the locked message.

Correct if you have the Verizon version. Not correct if you bought your phone from Google. That screen just means that your bootloader is currently locked. But it's trivial to unlock (and then root, if desired), as long as you don't have the Verizon version.

No. the idea of having a locked bootloader is so your phone is protected from the get-go. If you could unlock it and root it then the bootloader would be useless.
If you have been trying to unlock it and haven't been able to 1 of 2 (or possibly both issues) are present:
1. You have Verizon and they have updated the patch so Verizon users are not able to unlock unless a new exploit comes out.
2. You do not have fastboot and/or your phone drivers are not working, so fastboot is not properly working on your computer.
3. Both 1 & 2.

I'm not sure what that means with it being greyed out. I've seen others with that issue. Here in the United States that's not a problem, so it's likely something with the UK or carrier, or something else. I don't know any information beyond that.

In the United States most of the major networks would subsidize or pay for some type of incentive for users to use their networks. They have an interest in keeping the users on their network and prevent taking the device to another network esp after paying incentives for it. I have an old Nexus 6 that Sprint paid for that I got at a very low price that is network locked to Sprint despite it being a global compatible network device.

well no, people still pay for the device they just two it over 2 years rather than upfront. but anyway my point was more that people wanting to a buy a pixel probably want to becaues they dont want the networks to have enhanced / ruined it.
im just annoyed that i now have to go return the thing and waste half a day

You are referring to either a payment plan or leasing which is different. In the past carriers used to offer 2 yr contracts which immediately subsidized the phone's entire cost. The Nexus 6 I was able to get brand new under $200 because of this. Verizon is packing in credit over 24 months, but this is still money that is being used as a subsidy.

Time to wait to see if we can unlock this bad boy unofficially. The wait begins.
Ya T-Mobile also
Again, unless I'm completely off, it makes perfect sense that that switch is disabled. Until you fully pay for the device, I wouldn't allow it either. It may still not work, but that certainly explains why it doesn't, now. Carrier lock = sim lock. Unlock the sim, you unlock the carrier. No carrier lock, voila.

This for Bootloader unlocking, not carrier unlocking.
I remember my Nexus 6 on at&t had a unlocked bootloader
Zero is right, the OEM unlock switch will be grayed out on most carrier locked devices irregardless of whether the bootloader can be unlocked until the carried lock is removed.

Pay it off. Get sim unlock. Get bootloader unlock.
I'll have mine paid off in less than a month. Then we will know.

Just a thought, pull your sim, factory reset and see if it will let you unlock. Then put your sim back in. Also, there is options to root even when locked on the Verizon model, I would think it would work on ATT. FWIW.

Tell me more about this other option to root with a locked bootloader

Pay it off. Get sim unlock. Get bootloader unlock.
I'll have mine paid off in less than a month. Then we will know.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news - BUT, ATT, TMOBILE and VERIZON all have LOCKED Bootloaders - they will not be unlocked when you pay it off. Period. Won't happen. Don't get your hopes up.
The Only hope (however slim) is for someone to figure out a way to do it with custom code - but frankly that has not been done on an ATT Phone in YEARS - I don't expect it will happen ever.
I wish this wasn't true, but you can take it the bank, the bootloader on those phones is locked tight and are going to stay that way for a long time.

Ok, but TMobile users have already had theirs unlocked, and Verizon as well. So you info is incorrect. I have insides at ATT. We will see soon enough, and if not oh well. I enjoy the phone how it is. It's great for me

Yes, bootloader. They contacted and got sim unlocked, and was able to bootloader unlock.
I'm 99% sure once you sim unlock, you'll be able to bootloader unlock on the ATT one. Because it says, not available on carrier locked devices. Once it's not carrier locked, you can unlock.

Yes even OnePlus devices sold by t mobile we're unlockable once a Sim unlock was granted, either by paying off or using a traveling excuse for Sim unlock

I don't think that will work since that lock is probably part of custom software from AT&T. As soon as you put the SIM back in it will either automatically download that software or tell you there is an update (that would be custom from AT&T). If it's the second case then you could not install the update but since every update after that would be the same situation you'd never be able to update.

Custom software? No. This is the stock Google image with 3 att apps installed once you boot with an ATT sim card.
And no it won't be like that. After unlocking the bootloader you can flash the Google image. And you'd never have ATT attached to the phone again.
So have we seen anyone who has SIM-unlocked their AT&T device and then successfully unlocked the bootloader?

I ordered the device from ebay oneplus 7 pro tmobile network lock

I'm not sure about this, someone else probably knows more, but I think that's because whoever bought it originally is still in a contract with the phone, or they are still paying on it. I've heard of being able to contact one plus and getting an unlock code but I think you have to pay for that.
Like I said there I might be wrong

You could try actually searching the op7 pro section for the thread that literally says "This is how to get your t-mobile locked phone unlocked".

The international firmware from my understanding will NOT unlock it...not sim unlock anyway.....it has to be unlocked BEFORE switching to international. If he switches before unlocking it then he's gonna have to switch BACK to get it unlocked.

I have a T-Mobile OnePlus 7 Pro.
To SIM Unlock it, you pretty much need to be in the US, with a T-Mobile SIM inserted, contacting T-Mobile customer support....
Since you're in Israel, this sounds impossible.
You have to return this phone to the guy on eBay that sold it to you.
Without this phone being SIM-Unlocked first, it'll be useless in your country with no service.
You should look into buying the Global/International model of this phone next time, not the T-Mobile model.
As a tmo op7pro user who has gone through the unlock process; if the unlock button doesn't work in the unlock app, then you'll have to pay one of those sketchy sites some money to make the app work. It's the only known way to unlock the phone I believe.

Also you most likely didn't flash the right rom, but that wouldn't be on the international version
You'll know if it's unlocked if the OEM unlock is not greyed out in the developer settings

THIS @maorcm
Go to SETTINGS > WI-FI & INTERNET > SIM & NETWORK > ADVANCED > (NETWORK UNLOCK) > CONTINUE > PERMANENT UNLOCK.
If you're able to run this & you get the unlock failed, then, you're pretty much out of luck, again, less finding a paid unlock service or getting a refund from eBay.
Even if you do manage to get it SIM Unlocked, this does not automatically open the phone for use on another carrier.
It could be on a separate blacklist for financing issues (the seller didn't pay it off before you got it).
IDK if your carrier would honor this blacklist, but, if it's still not useable after a SIM Unlock, that would explain it.
Ditto, actually more so, if the phone was reported stolen. If the latter is true, it wouldn't be worth the effort to make it usable.
If it were me, I'd start the refund process with eBay/PayPal/etc....., or, sell it as a WI-FI only device/for parts.
Not to sound preachy, but, if what you paid for it on eBay was a steal, well, it probably was......

I agree with these points.
As I also mentioned earlier, I think OP really needs to get a refund from that eBay seller and return the phone.
Near impossible to unlock it in a different country.
The sketchy unlock sites are not guaranteed to work for the T-Mobile Unlock App because it requires an 'inside-man' that actually works for T-Mobile to help grant access for you to use the Unlock App.

Yeah, this is my 2nd go-around with the OnePlus 7 Pro & IIRC, that was the case with me as well on the 1st one.
However, this time (just got the phone again four days ago) the app was not in the app drawer. I tried to side-load it & it force-closed.
I think T-Mobile is incorporating the unlock function into the system settings on newer devices & on updates to older phones.
I immediately installed all pending updates out of the box, didn't check the app drawer until after all pending updates were installed, so, it may have been present on the older firmware (mine was on Android 9 with the July 2019 update out of the box).
Regardless, I believe the system settings unlock is the way T-Mobile is going from here on out, as that was the case on my OnePlus 8 & Note 10+ 5G.
Why did you order the T-Mobile locked one and not the unlocked one if you knew you were not going to be using T-Mobile. Because it was cheaper? Definitely you should open an eBay NOT AS DESCRIBED case. This is definitely seller fault.
Big business proposition for you. Unlocked iPhones sell for $200 more than T-Mobile locked ones. You should buy all of the T-Mobile locked ones, click "unlock" and then make $200 profit with every phone and if you can't open EBAY NOT AS DESCRIBED case and leave negative feedback for seller.
Definitely do not take 5 minutes to read through the forum or contact the guy who is willing to DO IT FOR FREE. You should force seller to pay return shipping from Israel too because this is 100% seller fault. Also did you have to pay VAT and import duty. Not fair. Not fair at all.
