Hi All,
This is my first time using 1+ and noticed that I can't change the nav bar color. I tried to use the NavBar app on the playstore, but the setting doesn't stick for home screen using Nova. Anyone know how to change it?
Would also like to know. Sometimes it's dark, sometimes it's light. Hate the inconsistency!
I'd rather just have it be black all the time until they can add fast app switching and swiping up on the right side for recents as options to gestures.
It appears they have made the default navbar colour white, which is incredibly annoying.
Guys, use gestures options! The only missing feature with gestures is the lack of fast switching to the latest recent app, yes...

"Just use the device in a different manner" is not a valid response to "I'd prefer the ability to x".

One thing I've found tremendously rare when it comes to ROM development is the use of PIE when only in Expanded Desktop/Immersive mode.
Most ROM's here offering PIE and Expanded desktop allow you enable both at the same time, but don't allow you to toggle PIE on only when in Immersive Mode.
The only rom so far i've found is PA.
So why is it that all these roms are bundling PIE, like SlimPie, but are making it so even in expanded desktop, the navbar buttons are still visible and pie doesn't take over?
To me this feels like common sense, or is the case that most people don't like pie, or don't bother expanding their desktop?
All the ROMs that include pie allow you to expand the desktop and remove the nav keys. Slim does for sure. SlimPIE is how PIE used to be when it was first developed by the PA team (pre-4.4).
PA first developed PIE, years ago. Since then Android has come such a long way that the use of PIE and its implementation has also evolved into something useful, when its needed. For instance, android never had "immersive mode" before 4.4, so initially PIE was thereto allow more use of your screen's real estate.
Some people liked how it was (see PA 3.99, which is not on the Nexus 5 because it's based on Jellybean), and for those SlimPIE and all the other ROMs that include it are there to use, but it's an old way of thinking and the PA team is about innovation.
Of course you can read about all this somewhere, I don't have a link though, I just remember cause I been around a while.
I am using AOSP rom with gravity box. What I do is enable PIE, then the immers mode only hide statusbar. Then I set every diemnsion of the navbar to 0 px (width, height), because if I disable navbar the three dot menu button disappears from the apps. I set immersmode to only hide statusbar because in full immers if I swipe up from the bottom to activates PIE then the statusbar becomes visible which I do not want.

I totally agree. I have no idea why ROMs that have Pie do not automatically switch to Pie when going into Immersive Mode. Everything is supposed to be about ease of use and swiping up to unhide the navbar and then touch the screen again to press a button is silly IMO. Also if you happen to be on a scrollable list or in an app with an up swipe gesture many times it'll trigger that too.
Anyways this can be accomplished on SlimKat using Chamber of Secrets. Someone had created a profile to be imported into Tasker on the thread.

Thanks for explaining this, it makes sense. I wish roms had the latest version of PIE instead, if not, I wish they added an option to simply disable nav bar instead of pie when you set both to appear bottom of screen. Unlike current behaviour which is to disable pie at bottom when navbar is also at bottom.

If I understand right, doesn't this mean that you have to use pie regardless of immersive mode or not? I am looking to have it toggle on when immersive is on and off when immersive is off.

A profile for tasker that automates toggling nav bar off and pie on, only when in immersive mode and then nav bar on again and pei off when out of immersive mode?
I am just glad PA has what I want and even better now with Peek and Hover being added too. But I do miss simple things from other roms, such as certain toggles, dpi changes etc. Although ive managed to find apps/widgets to replace those functionalities. I simply opened the thread because I thought it was rather strange.

Yes. It reads a system intent and then changes to Pie based on the system ui change. I don't have mine set up like that personally. I only use Expanded mode on certain apps or when the phone is in landscape mode on certain apps, etc. and have profiles set to kill the nav bar and enable expanded desktop mode. I just always leave bottom pie enabled and once the navbar is removed pie comes into play. Works perfectly.

That is true, because of the way PIE is disabled when Nav Bar exists, it means you shouldn't have to have an option to disable PIE also when you leave Immersive.
I just wish every rom had an option to enable PIE action to copy PA
Exactly, you'll find while other ROMs have a ton of features, PAs is the most elegant implementation. It may take a little longer cause they're rewriting everything from scratch but it'll be well worth it..as is evidenced by this latest release.
I've had the phone for one day and it's a sexy phone. However I was encountering an annoyance with the navigation bar (the bottom strip with the home button and back button.) There is an option to change the navigation bar background color (settings > display > navigation bar > background color) but the issue is that it only applies when the keyboard is not present. I set my color to black, but everytime I would send a text or type anything the bottom navigation bar would switch to default white. I like my dark theme and this was a YUGE issue for me, but some people may enjoy the contrast or be fine with white.
The fix I found is a program called "NavBar Apps"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.damianpiwowarski.navbarapps
It works without root (which is not yet possible) and allows a user to set a static color for the navigation bar, plus other options like battery or dynamic nav bar color from current application. I don't use these features as I enjoy my solid black, but they are interesting to try.
In my opinion static color for the nav bar is the best as I strongly dislike the changing of solid colors between open and closed keyboard.
Hopefully this is helpful, peace

Thank you so much! I realized, however, that the app does need to be running in the background for the color fix to work. Which is fine as long as my nav bar matches my black keyboard
Awesome, it works perfectly!
That's all well and good, but a reminder: static images burn in on AMOLED screens. Perhaps Sammy set it to change as a preventative measure.
I just got the s8+ and I am wondering if there is a way to make the keyboard larger on the screen. Thanks!

This isn't quite the place to post your question.
However
While the Samsung Keyboard is open, press the key that looks like a gear, and select "Keyboard size and layout."
Make sure to always thoroughly check app settings!

I'm using SwiftKey. Wonderful app.
Hi, I got my s8+ a couple of days ago and I am using a black theme from Samsung which indeed doesn't theme the nav bar when the keyboard is open.
I am afraid to root it right away and if this works then I am all for it.
Question: themes from the Samsung store only change the color of the built-in apps but not the 3rd party apps like whatsapp.
Even the color of the notifications are still white. Any ideas?

I was thinking more of the navigation buttons themselves. The image of the keys inverts when the bar is white.

I use All In One Gestures to activate immersive mode. Unfortunately the keyboard (and a few other random things) don't work while in immersive mode, so I set an edge gesture at the bottom of the screen to deactivate it if I need to use the keyboard.
I also set navigation to edge gestures so I don't need to exit immersive mode often.

I think all of this is a lot o hassle. Mine's coming today and I'll try some immersive mode options, but will keep looking for the invisible icons idea as this would change absolutely nothing on my daily use of the device.

Since a couple of OTAs ago the customization of the nav bar has changed. I pretty much just want it to be black in all apps. There was an app "Nav Bar Apps" that did this but now it doesn't work like it used to. An example is in Nova Launcher the nav bar is always white, also in Swiftkey it's white. Any ideas?

If you want the black nav bar back just use this theme from XDA. No need to void your warranty. Also there is Substratum for Samsung devices.

I've been messing with substratum and somehow my nav bar ended up like the pixel. When I try to change it to something else, when I press home button it still shows pixel icon. I tried to remove all layers and uninstall subtratum app but the pixel nav bar remained. Is there a way to get back to stock nav bar without having to reset phone. I also installed custom nav bar app and now the spacing between buttons is smaller I think.

You'll have to uninstall the substratum theme. Settings> apps > your theme. I'm using swift dark and there are around 20 layers to uninstall.
Alright so I got the stock nav buttons back... Is there a way to get the right dimensions? I used the custom navbar app and made it more compact than it was.

Do you still have the app? Did you make a backup of the original? If you didn't make a backup you should be able to use the app to remedy your situation.
yeah not sure how to get it back to the right layout. Everything is scrunched to the center.
edit: figured it out, had to purchase app to get custom layout
now get systemui error every time I rotate to landscape. Just gonna reset my phone I guess.
Newb here, it's always white and ugly. How to do it no root?
You need to root then install Xposed then in Xposed search BlackNavigationBar

Gestures are trash. Tried for a week
Meizu did it best years ago.
Navbar apps is CLOSE to working (not great) and I do NOT want to root. All that does is lead to problems. We need OP to add system level control over navbar color, that would be awesome (if possible)
I use navbar while trying also to get used to gestures.
It does not need root, BTW. And it has some nice customisations. But sometimes, it gets forgotten, and the customisations don't apply (Which often resolves after a few moments but it just means it's not perfect).
There is also a module that can detect when keyboard is open, so you can choose a keyboard appropriate colour, rather than in apps like Facebook having bright white navbar against my material dark themed keyboard.
Gestures could be quite nice, but I need more control of them. For example, I find the home gesture and back gestures get mixed up sometimes. I would rather have one side of the phone dedicated to home (right side, until about 25% from the edge) and the rest to act as back.
Also, I still have some apps that use menu button, which, with buttons, can be mapped to long press recent tasks, but has no equivalent gesture. It could have a similar gesture to how you get to recent apps, but from the back button side. It would keep the gesture logic and adds a function that works in certain contexts.
Until gestures have the controls I need, I will continue using navbar. Coming from an Honor phone, it's really great that it works, even if it sometimes forgets to activate. (Huawei's os has this magical way to overwrite any customisations that the user might like).
Sent from my OnePlus 6 using XDA Labs
Also the hide the nav bar option gives you transparent nav bar.

correct. I don't understand why OnePlus didn't do it like that instead.
f you have Xposed Systemless and Magisk installed (requires root and an unlocked bootloader obviously, also assuming this is for the Oneplus 5, 5T, or 6) install the Xposed Module "BlackNavigation Bar for Oneplus 5T, Oneplus 6" by yuanwofei. Works great and makes it black instead.

Okay so it looks like it's an issue with gestures, because when I use 2 or 3 button navigation, the problem goes away (although there is still a small black bar remaining). When I switch back to gestures the black bar comes back...

Consider installing the excellent XDA Navigation Gestures package from the Play store. I continue to use the three-button navigation "pill" mode. The so-called "pill" replaces the triangle/circle/square navigation icons and the replacement can be made extremely thin, hugging the bottom edge of the screen, and they can fade to be nearly invisible. I recognize that new Android users might like gestures. But many long-time Android users appreciate having the choice to use the old techniques. I find the package reliable on my Pixel 3a and Samsung S9, with Nova Launcher.
