(Guide) Navigation Bar keyboard color - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I've had the phone for one day and it's a sexy phone. However I was encountering an annoyance with the navigation bar (the bottom strip with the home button and back button.) There is an option to change the navigation bar background color (settings > display > navigation bar > background color) but the issue is that it only applies when the keyboard is not present. I set my color to black, but everytime I would send a text or type anything the bottom navigation bar would switch to default white. I like my dark theme and this was a YUGE issue for me, but some people may enjoy the contrast or be fine with white.
The fix I found is a program called "NavBar Apps"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.damianpiwowarski.navbarapps
It works without root (which is not yet possible) and allows a user to set a static color for the navigation bar, plus other options like battery or dynamic nav bar color from current application. I don't use these features as I enjoy my solid black, but they are interesting to try.
In my opinion static color for the nav bar is the best as I strongly dislike the changing of solid colors between open and closed keyboard.
Hopefully this is helpful, peace

This was great. Thank for sharing. ?

Great! Thanks! Anything we can do about notifications background being white even if I have a black theme?

Make an exception in your app killers
Thank you so much! I realized, however, that the app does need to be running in the background for the color fix to work. Which is fine as long as my nav bar matches my black keyboard

Awesome, it works perfectly!

That's all well and good, but a reminder: static images burn in on AMOLED screens. Perhaps Sammy set it to change as a preventative measure.

I just got the s8+ and I am wondering if there is a way to make the keyboard larger on the screen. Thanks!

This isn't quite the place to post your question.
However
While the Samsung Keyboard is open, press the key that looks like a gear, and select "Keyboard size and layout."
Make sure to always thoroughly check app settings!

I'm using SwiftKey. Wonderful app.

Hi, I got my s8+ a couple of days ago and I am using a black theme from Samsung which indeed doesn't theme the nav bar when the keyboard is open.
I am afraid to root it right away and if this works then I am all for it.
Question: themes from the Samsung store only change the color of the built-in apps but not the 3rd party apps like whatsapp.
Even the color of the notifications are still white. Any ideas?

Then just go for black navigation bar. No burn in with shut down pixels.

I was thinking more of the navigation buttons themselves. The image of the keys inverts when the bar is white.

There are actually many people reporting burn in on the navigation buttons, sadly. I was looking for a way to keep the bar fully functional but invisible. Do you guys know anyway to do it? Thanks

I use All In One Gestures to activate immersive mode. Unfortunately the keyboard (and a few other random things) don't work while in immersive mode, so I set an edge gesture at the bottom of the screen to deactivate it if I need to use the keyboard.
I also set navigation to edge gestures so I don't need to exit immersive mode often.

I think all of this is a lot o hassle. Mine's coming today and I'll try some immersive mode options, but will keep looking for the invisible icons idea as this would change absolutely nothing on my daily use of the device.

I don't think that this newest update was thought through...

Look at the navigation bar in the screenshot attached to this post, the application UI is black, the status bar is black, and the most common color is black. Ignoring all of this, the navigation bar is still white, and this will ironically burn the navigation bar in if you use the application too often.
Why can't the color just automatically match the status bar? It's kind of dumb to always have it as white, in applications with a black UI it looks ugly and ironically burns in. Doing the exact opposite of what the update was made to fix. There is also no way to change this, it's impossible to have any other color than something very light. This isn't a problem for me, because I always hide the bar in use (looks great), but for someone who doesn't want to do it, this will be a huge issue and annoyance.
My thoughs exactly. I have a lot of black apps and themes which frankly now look ridiculous. It is actually off putting having a huge white bar at the bottom when everything else is black or dark (and no, before some smart arse decides to say it, hiding it is NOT the solution).
I have also noticed in pretty much every app I have used that I now have this stupid bar pop up just above the nav bar which says press here to go full screen (which doesn;t actually go full screen anyway, all it does is get rid of the empty gap caused by this message in the first place). I mean WTF? I never had that showing up before and never had any issues before either.

A "huge" issue is a bit of an overstatement in my opinion. Samsung has done this on purpose to make sure that the pixels that are turned off when the nav bar is black don't burn in slower than all the other pixels on the screen, which would create an even uglier sight if that happens.

But now the navigation bar will burn in faster than the rest of the screen, it is still a huge issue... The issue is still not solved, and it looks even uglier than before. A black navigation bar on a white themed app looks good, because it blends to the black bezel, and doesn't attract attention from the content of the app due to being practically invisible (only the icons to navigate are visible).
White catches the eye, and a white navigation bar on a black app is very distracting from the content you're trying to see. It also breaks the immersion of similar colors being displayed on the entire screen, a uniformity of darkness across the screen looks good, but not, if there is a white bar in the bottom breaking the immersion.
It's beyond me why Samsung hasn't made the navigation bar sync colors with the status bar. The goal to avoid burn-ins is to have a similar brightness / color on the whole display, to avoid differences that add up to burning in over time. The status bar shifts color based on application, this is why it doesn't burn in. It's white on white applications, and black on black applications. Copying this color for the navigation bar would be the perfect fix for burn-ins, but instead Samsung turned the bar bright white under ANY conditions.

What if I want to keep the default stock look? It's not a proper solution to change the entire device's theme to be black, just to have a black navigation bar. This also brings back the burn-in issue on light themed apps, the navigation bar being black will burn in slower than the rest of the screen.

Totally agree. Not only this but the whole software seems like it is not there yet.
I have actually disabled automatic updates on my S8+ both in normal settings and under developer settings after hearing about this update. Shouldn't that be enough? Or can I prevent the update entirely somehow without root?

If you want to completely stop system updates, you can do that with a package disabler. There are paid ones that have tons of features like data clearing, but those aren't needed in this case. The Adhell ad blocker has a package disabler built in to it, you can download the Adhell app from here if you want: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.getadhell.androidapp
After downloading and opening the application, it prompts you to give it permissions to enable the Knox service, used for blocking ads and disabling packages (no root needed). After this is done, tap the middle option in the bottom, that says "Package disabler". A list of applications appears, you can just scroll down to find the system update application, and flip the switch on the right to disable it. After this you won't get notifications of system updates anymore, because the application used for them is technically uninstalled. It still is there, but it's not in use anymore.

Nav Bar

Since a couple of OTAs ago the customization of the nav bar has changed. I pretty much just want it to be black in all apps. There was an app "Nav Bar Apps" that did this but now it doesn't work like it used to. An example is in Nova Launcher the nav bar is always white, also in Swiftkey it's white. Any ideas?

If you want the black nav bar back just use this theme from XDA. No need to void your warranty. Also there is Substratum for Samsung devices.

I've been messing with substratum and somehow my nav bar ended up like the pixel. When I try to change it to something else, when I press home button it still shows pixel icon. I tried to remove all layers and uninstall subtratum app but the pixel nav bar remained. Is there a way to get back to stock nav bar without having to reset phone. I also installed custom nav bar app and now the spacing between buttons is smaller I think.

You'll have to uninstall the substratum theme. Settings> apps > your theme. I'm using swift dark and there are around 20 layers to uninstall.
Alright so I got the stock nav buttons back... Is there a way to get the right dimensions? I used the custom navbar app and made it more compact than it was.

Do you still have the app? Did you make a backup of the original? If you didn't make a backup you should be able to use the app to remedy your situation.
yeah not sure how to get it back to the right layout. Everything is scrunched to the center.
edit: figured it out, had to purchase app to get custom layout
now get systemui error every time I rotate to landscape. Just gonna reset my phone I guess.

Navigation Bar Color

Hi All,
This is my first time using 1+ and noticed that I can't change the nav bar color. I tried to use the NavBar app on the playstore, but the setting doesn't stick for home screen using Nova. Anyone know how to change it?
Would also like to know. Sometimes it's dark, sometimes it's light. Hate the inconsistency!
I'd rather just have it be black all the time until they can add fast app switching and swiping up on the right side for recents as options to gestures.
It appears they have made the default navbar colour white, which is incredibly annoying.
Guys, use gestures options! The only missing feature with gestures is the lack of fast switching to the latest recent app, yes...

Is there any way to make the Navigation bar Black. I have tried substratum themes like swiftblack, pitchblack.. etc but couldnt get it themed. I have also tried xposed module (BlackNavigationBarfor 5t) which does work but it makes the recents kill button vanish.

Ur too noob maybe. When the keyboard pops up it goes white and at many instances.
"BlackNavigationBar 1.0.7" Xposed module is only thing that helped me to make this damn navbar to be always black and "gravitybox" helped to make those damn buttons black as well. Only unfortunately gravitybox does not have an option to make buttons to be transparent.
I do not understand why is it so difficult for google to make proper black theme with white text and icons. As well Oneplus is struggling to make the same damn thing.
In order to just get a simple the same interface from device to device I am always have to use multiple third party software.
I have not tried on OP6 but the following commands worked on my Samsung S8+. It should also work on OP6.

Sorry, I did not as I use Gestures along with Nova launcher. Have not felt the necessity to go back to a true navigation bar. Also the commands I mentioned were for Oreo.
Try nacho notch on play store. It works really well. If you don't want it to affect your status bar just set its height at 0. (To change settings long press on the quick settings icon)

That's very generic. Please be specific as to what you mean by "app's settings." I want to make the nav bar black under one global setting not fish around on a per application basis. For example the play store, gmail, chome and firefox the nav bar changes color I want it to remain black at all times.

Samsung doesn't let us change the color of the white navbar buttons-> Result:Burn in!
I really cannot understand the decision of Samsung not to provide the option of changing the color of the white navbar icons.
I use black themes and wallpapers for 1 year now. Black wallpapers and themes appear great on amoled screens and also help the battery life.
In order for the navigation bar to match my black interface, i turned the navigation bar to black.
The problem is that all these months the navbar is black but the navbar icons are white.
So after 1 year of light use i got a burn in of the icons of the navbar and i have to ask for a screen replacement.
If Samsung had given me choice, i would have set dark grey color for the navbar icons and i wouldn't had burn in. Someone can say that it's my fault because i turn the navbar to black so the contrast with the white icons was too big. Others could say "why didn't you hide completely the navbar? To these type of questions i reply with a question : Was it so difficult for Samsung to give an option to choose a color for the icons of the navbar???? Is it bad to prefer black interface on amoled displays which have exactly this advantage compared to the lcds???
I really hope that someone in Samsung will see this post. It's the first time i am thinking of giving up the amoled displays. In the past i didn't have such a problem because the navbar was outside the screen. Now with the bezeless screens, the navbar burn in issue is more easy to appear.

If you read my post, you ll see that the meaning of it is not the solution "just hide it". And if it is more practical for me to have it shown as it is by default? What is the answer of Samsung on this? "Well, we couldn't provide the option to change the color of the navigation buttons, we haven't the knowledge that developers of play store have ( there are navigation bars which let the user change the color of the buttons), sorry for the burn-in" ???
Has anyone totally disabled the navbar and replaced it with one of the play store? I personally hide the stock, installed one from the play store, but when i enter an app, the interface of the app doesn't move up, so the buttons of the navigation bar fall inside the app's interface.
I disabled the navigation bar using this methos and works perfectly, is not even complicated.
Navigation Gestures
When i used black nav bar i noticed it's area was a little bit brighter color after that I removed it completely
I changed color to black.
Samsung want that your screen will burn and you buy a always the newest phone.
I use Gesture Controls app and disable the nav bar. However one solution is you can download an overlay that changes the buttons to the Pixel buttons and sets there color to a dark grey. That's what I had been using before the gesture control. Numerous options on Substratum as well. Good luck!
