Android P and text messages - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

I got my OnePlus 6 the other day and loaded the P beta. Before putting anything on it I was testing what works and found out that I was not able to be text message. I could send but not receive. When I downgraded back to 8.1 everything worked perfect. I know the beta says VoLte is broken (did not have issues making and receiving calls). Any suggestions to fix it, I bought the phone to play with P mostly. I can deal with most bugs, but I need to be able to receive text and pic messages. I am using T-Mobile and no other SIM cards.

I have a Samsung S9+. I am tired of Samsung slow updates. So I thought I would give this a try. I bought it because of faster updates and very good specs.

T-Mobile Visual Voicemail APK

For some reason the Google Play Store is saying my Nexus 5 is not compatible to download the app from the app store. Pretty annoying. Would someone mind sharing the APK for it? I'd greatly appreciate it.
Wouldn't do you any good. T-Mobile hasn't upgraded the app to work with 4.4 yet. Should be fairly soon though
edit: As o_z0ne points out below looks like it just might work . I should have known when the tech support tmo guy told me it's not updated yet to work with kitkat ugh....

Yeah, it worked just fine when I was on the stock ROM. However, since switching to the Cataclysm ROM the Play Store won't let me download it for some reason.

Have you guys been getting texts from 122 saying Activate:dt=6 ? Searches tell me that it's related to visual voicemail.

When I first booted my N5 when I got it, it downloaded T-Mo VVM with no issues. Worked fine. I reset my phone, still on stock, but when all; my apps reinstalled automatically, VVM was not there. When I went to the Play Store, it now says my phone is not compatible. Very strange.

This appears to be an attempt to activate VMM on the line, per TMO support fora (this one was for a Windows phone):
"
I found another thread where a user tried texting a short code that eventually got VV to work on his Windows Phone. Let me know if this process works for you
1. Text "Activate:dt=6" to 122 (omit the quotation marks)
2. Call yourself from your mobile phone (enter the vm system), enter your password, and then hang up after hearing you have a saved message. When you hang up, you should have visual voicemail working on your phone."
Thanks

I keep getting a message saying that the server isn't responding. When I tried calling myself, I just got a busy signal but when I long-pressed 1, it took me to regular voicemail....anyone else run into this or have any suggestions?
EDIT: I've been through the wringer trying to get VVM set up; long story short, T-Mobile says that VVM is available on prepaid phones, but not the Nexus 5, and customer service even gave me the link to a document stating that. It's amazing how some people have gotten VVM/Google Voice to work on their T-Mo prepaid N5's, and some haven't. I'm one of the unlucky ones, I suppose.

According to T-Mobile, they're working on support for the N5. They supported the N4, so I don't see any reason why the N5 won't be supported eventually.

Sprint MMS Issues?

Hi. Just wondering if anyone has had any MMS Issues since buying this phone. I've had several people ask me if I ever got the pictures they sent, and I just never got them. This happened on both stock and custom roms. Weird thing is, this morning I had my wife send me a test MMS and it worked. But later in the day, I didn't receive one again.
Thoughts?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I'll be tentatively getting my N5 on Monday (knock on wood), so if everything goes according to plan I'll test MMS right away and let you know.
I get them but I'm not always notified that a new message exists. Seems to be group MMS messages I'm not receiving notifications for. This is probably more of a Hangouts issue than a Sprint issue tho.
The problem is more unicorns exist in the world than sprint cell towers
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I'm on sprint and up until like 3 hours ago, my MMS was working great... But now for some reason, I can't send any but can still receive them no problem. It's pretty irritating. I haven't changed anything yet they just stopped working. Using textra (and have been since I got the phone two weeks ago)

Turn data on to receive mms. And I hope this thread will stop you from asking 100+ times in less than 24hrs in the same rom thread about same issue. Thanks.

Cleveland, OH FWIW...
If you're using Hangout, try 8SMS. It's a free app, a KitKat modified version of the CM messaging app. One cool feature (which Sprint supports) is that'll send MMS via Wi-Fi. They also have a thread in Android Apps here in XDA.

I'd consider it, but my MMS are back to working. That wi-fi MMS thing sounds awesome though... it's just- I've been waiting for SMS/MMS in hangouts for so long, I don't want to cheat on it!

SMS Disappearing from Facebook Messenger?

Hey all,
I'm wondering, does anyone here use the SMS feature in Facebook Messenger? I'm in the US and SMS is still quite widely used here, so it's great to have it all in one app.
However, even though I have FB Messenger set as my default messaging app and have granted it SMS permissions, it is not working properly. I am able to send a text message, but once it is sent it disappears. The only way I can access it is through the EMUI Messaging app (or Google's messaging app.)
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any suggestions as to what I might be able to do to fix it? I've never had this problem on Lineage OS or RR before, so I'm thinking it has to do with EMUI. Thanks for any help you can provide!

It is something to do with EMUI. I too wanted to use Messenger for SMS but for some reason it keeps deleting my messages (Not from the system I can see them in the default SMS app). Also it doesn't show my old SMS as well. I tried alot but I've just left it.

Not just that. EMUI leaves a lot to be desired. A bunch of small issues add up, you know?
For example, no option to customize the notification LED, which is very convenient for knowing what sort of notification you're getting. Certain settings are hidden away more than they should be, the development is really lacking, etc. I can get a phone with a Snapdragon processor and pure Android for cheaper, so why not?

I agree with ya; it's a beautiful phone and it's a shame it uses a Kirin instead of a Snapdragon, otherwise I'd be all over it.

I'd recommend trying to get ur hands on a OnePlus 5 but that might be too expensive so u can opt for the OnePlus 3T. It will get the Oreo update and maybe updates for another year or so. Plus after its support ends u will have tons of ROMs to choose from on XDA. If none of these r in ur budget then go for the Moto G5 Plus hands down.

RCS Universal Profile Support?

Anyone on a carrier that already has RCS Universal Profile enabled that can confirm if this is working in Android Messages on the OnePlus 6?
https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/aqu22f/ability_to_disable_the_second_sim_slot/
I don't own the phone, but every single Android phone with Google Play Services on a somewhat modern OS (I think either L or M) supports Universal Profile RCS in the Android Messages app. I think Samsung Messages also supports it, but I haven't tried it myself. I think the Google Carrier Services app is also required, but fortunately this is installed by default from the Google Play store.
Only the old, non-Universal Profile versions of RCS were device (and carrier) specific.
Hopefully this is the case with the OnePlus. It would be nice if someone on a carrier that supports it could verify anyways.
Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk
My carrier (Rogers) supports it but I haven't gotten it to work as of yet.
From what I gathered, OnePlus does not support rcs yet. I am on AT&T which supports their "advanced messaging" (just renaming rcs), but so far it only looks like select Samsung and LG phones support it. Not only does the carrier and the messaging app need to support rcs, so does the manufacturer...and all three have to be true on the recipients end as well, otherwise you just send an SMS.
I am also curious as to weather a custom ROM can add rcs support or is it something only the manufacturer can do?

Advanced messaging is a proprietary version of RCS from what I understand RCS UP is part of the latest version of Android and Android Messages. At&t had yet to say much about their support for RCS UP.

I'm on Telia with OnePlus 6 and RCS doesn't work.
I've even been in contact with Telia and had then deactivate RCS on their end, re-entered via Android Messages (successfully) and it still doesn't work.
An old Galaxy S5 was the exact same way, which leads me to believe the list above from AT&T is at least somewhat representative.
My old Nexus 5 was fine, but that's bad on the G3 I believe so that makes sense.

RCS Universal works in Android Messages on my OnePlus 3, so I would assume it works on the OnePlus 6 too. I'm running ResurrectionRemix though (based on LOS). I can check with OOS when my OnePlus 6 arrives in the next few days. My SIM card at least supports it for sure (tested myself with the OnePlus 3).

If it can be solved by changing the ROM than I may be tempted to finally root this phone. This is the first phone I have had, that I did not bother to root.
I am going to see if RCS is working on my wife's Xiaomi Redmi Note 5.

Well that indeed points towards lacking RCS support in OOS, which would be a shame.
I am very happy with RR! Check out the official thread on the OnePlus 3 forum, a user there maintains a up-to-date bug list after every new build. If there is nothing in there that bothers you (all minor issues for me, I actually never came across any of them in daily use), go for it! I could not recommend RR more.
Once RR gets released for the 1+6 I will be flashing it. Just have to wait for proper notch support and an official LOS release. Until then I'll miss a lot of RR features dearly in OOS.

That's good to know. I used to use RR on my Nexus 5 and was very happy with it. Perhaps the best ROM I tried. The Nexus was super easy to root as I used a rooting tool that someone had made. Just plug and play. I researched rooting the OP3 when I first got it and it seemed to complicated to bother at the time as I was happy with the beta builds. Now that I am lacking RCS it kinda pisses me off. Why wouldn't 1+ add support. Google claims all phones past KitKit are supposed to support it. I think the fact that all OnePlus phones don't point to a bug in their software.
Do you know of any simple plug and play tools for unlocking and rooting the OP3 that I could try. Phone's getting laggy anyways and it could use a clean slate.

Let's keep the thread clean from OT from another device. I'll drop you a PM later when I get home.
Has anyone by now managed to get RCS working with Android Messages on OOS? I do see the Advanced Chat features options in settings, but when I try to enable it, it just loads forever. On my OnePlus 3 with a custom ROM (LOS based) this process takes around 20 seconds and then RCS works. Waiting didn't help on my OnePlus 6 with OOS though, still not enabled after hours.
If you are seeing the advanced chat features options that’s a great sign, contact your carrier and ask them to reset your RCS profile (if they are on universal profile this is something they do through Google) once that’s done reboot your phone and see if it works.

Yes. Latest OOS. I'm rooted with Magisk and am running xXx ROM, but I doubt this makes a difference as I saw the Advanced Chat features setting before flashing xXx.
So can confirm RCS works with Telekom.de (Germany) and the OnePlus 6 on OOS ?

That's where you're wrong. OOS does not stop Android Messages from (successfully) activating RCS, everything is seemingly fine.
You just aren't able to actually send or receive RCS messages.
I have the settings, I get the activation notification you attached a photo of, I get a successfull activation screen, my carrier sees me activated.
You wouldn't be able to tell I don't have RCS functionality, everything points to it working. However it doesn't.
I've one through every possible solution to my lacking RCS on my (stock) OnePlus 6. I've reset Android Messages completely, I've had my carrier (Telia) deactivate RCS on my number/SIM. I've reset Android Messages once again, rebooted, checked data settings. Everything. I've even switched SIM-cards (and have had the whole thing rest afterwards, yes.)
OOS for some reason hasn't flipped the RCS switch, like someone else mentioned.
The same happened on a Galaxy S5 with stock M for what it's worth. It seems to be a "thing".
Here's a checklist for people who feel like weighing in on OnePlus 6 having RCS:
* Are you on the STOCK ROM?
* Are you actually on a OnePlus 6?
* Do you not have Magisk etc installed?
If no to any of the above, your experience is not relevant in this case.
RCS works on custom ROMs, it doesn't on stock ROM. None of us have been able to get it to work.

So I have the Pixel 4XL on Verizon and was able to get RCS working with a buddy who has a Pixel 1 on Google Fi. However I don't seem to have luck with others such as my girlfriend who has an S10 on ATT. Any ideas?
My phone works, but how do I convince others to use it too and make it compatible across network and devices?
Pixel 4 XL and I'm with Google Fi, it's been working
since 2 weeks now with Messages Beta apk!
Anyone get this working using Samsung messages app? I hear it’s suppose to work through there as well but no luck on my end.

It's not currently working on Samsung messages but apparently google is working on it.
"The Google Messages app is also a hard requirement right now (outside some carrier collaborations like Rogers’ and Sprint’s use of Jibe) but it sounds like the company would like to open things up to other apps in the future, stating that "we are working on bringing chat features broadly to more regions, carriers and other messaging apps (e.g. Samsung Messages)."
