So I took delivery of my P20 Pro this afternoon. I'm reserving judgment on the camera but so far I'm pretty happy. There's one thing I'm completely flabbergasted by though
Huawei have replaced the stock 'double-tap power for camera' functionality with 'double-tap volume down'.
On the face of it this might not seem so bad, but it means a couple of things:
1 - you can't launch the camera quickly if you are actually using the phone. On other devices I would often be using an app when a photo opportunity arose, so with the Huawei I have to either go back to the home screen and click the camera app or press the power button and launch it from the lockscreen. This might not seem much but when a split second photo opportunity arises these couple of seconds can mean the difference between catching and missing a shot.
2 - you can't use the volume down method when you're playing anything. So if you're walking through the countryside playing your favourite album and suddenly a unicorn gallops past...again those couple of seconds mean you might miss the moment.
This might seem like nit picking but this is a *camera centric* phone. There's no advantage I can think of for the alternative camera shortcut method Huawei have adopted - the double-tapping power method serves no other conflicting purpose, and it's not even as if the volume down button is in a more convenient position.
I can't help but think this is a poorly conceived decision on Huawei's part - or worse still, change for change's sake.
I notice they've also turned the Oreo multimedia notifications into an exercise in excruciatingly unimaginative blandness - seemingly just to 'not be stock Androidy in any way'.
I'm not going to write off the phone as it seems like a nice bit of kit overall, but I really hope Huawei make some changes to the UI of this phone over its lifetime because I can't help but feel like some of their decisions (and they are very proactive decisions) are a little...shoddy.
You'll get used to it really quickly.
Also, it doesn't just open the camera, it takes a picture. Even tells you how quickly it has done it. I have found this really useful.. My kids sometimes do amusing things, but don't sit still for longer than a second,
It's impossible to get used to as I listen to podcasts and music on my phone all the time. How does it taking a picture make any difference anyway? Couldn't the same thing apply if they used the power button instead, or would that preclude this option?
Yeah there's literally no reason for them not to use the power button. It's just bad design all round.
It may be to keep functionality the same across all markets (IE too lazy) as it's a requirement in India that a triple press of the power button calls the emergency services. So they couldn't really leave in double press for camera in case of accidents.
Every other OEM destroys stock functions in one way or the other..
Did you try a button remapper app ?
Wouldn't it be easier to just press home and hit camera? Just saying. I've never used a quick launch and i've never missed a shot

How is that easier than double tapping the power button in literally any scenario - screen off, screen on, in an app, watching a video. If that scenario were just as easy then why would they (or anyone else) have a button shortcut at all?
The point is that no matter what I'm doing - whether the screen is off or not - I can double tap the power button and the phone vibrates and instantly opens the camera app, ready for a shot - so let's say I'm browsing Reddit sat on a park bench and a man dressed as Elvis runs past me pursued by a gaggle of geese - no problem - I won't miss that shot.
You might never have missed a shot and you might not use this feature but my point is not to force the feature on anyone - it's to ask why Huawei chose a worse methodology for quick launching the camera than the stock Android one - such as the one on my Nokia - and the one implemented by Samsung and LG (in their newest G7). The power button is not only separate from the volume buttons (and therefore easier to find 'blind') but has a ridge on it.

My 2 cents: the Huawei P20 pro is not a "camera-centric" phone.
If it where, like the Nokia 808, the Lumia 1020, the Lumia 950, and some Sony, it would have a camera specific hardware button, period.
No way that anyone would think of a Camera with no shutter button.
Same for a "camera-centric" phone. 2 stages shutter button is part of the definition of it.
Look, The chinese know how to make great hardware because the western world outsource the product making to countries like china so after year s and years they learn from doing a copy. So now it comes down to software which is the other half of what makes a great phone and this is where i see many problems.
Huawei is poor in terms of software developping. Simply look at the launcher for exp and you ll see, gallery app, video player, video editor and more
As my previous device (LG V20) uses the same method (double-click volume down) to open camera, I has got no issue regarding the action. Only funny thing is that, at first, I didn't realize that the default mode take a picture when I double-click. I was so used to the way double-clicking while bringing up the camera. In that way, the camera is ready when the phone is in position and i can take photos. But later, I realized that there are so many blur pictures in my gallery. Only then I realized that it took picture by default. Quite easy to change the action in the camera setting though.
I'm on Resurrection Remix.
Double tap power key opens the camera from any screen no matter what.
If you're lucky enough to have unlocked your bootloader then give it a shot.
It is using the p20 pro camera too.
Wasnt this feature available under gestures in emui

Hey guys,
This forum has been wonderful for me so I thought I would pass along my own personal experience with a couple of items.
First 'the Clip' case - great - I love mine. For those that have had concerns about the main home/back/menu/search buttons not being lighted, the clip is perfect for helping to find these keys. If you insert your tablet camera up (not upside down to uncover the usb port), the right hand clip is the perfect tactile way to find menu (just above) and back (just below). A good way to navigate these buttons in darker settings.
Second - the static/hissing/white noise problem people have experienced. I know several people have indicated it is a hardware problem and to replace your tablet, that was not an option for me as it did not start until after the 30 day return period. I have found, however, that if you set your screen to NEVER sleep and instead use the power buton to put the screen to sleep, it cuts down on the occurences significantly. Additionally, if it does happen (it has happened twice in the last week), it recovers for itself. You get the noise for ONLY the existing sound that is supposed to be playing and the next sound (whether it is a feedback sound, a notification, etc), it will have corrected itself. At least that's what my experience has been.
To all the developers out there (and especially roebeet) - thanks for everything, I love this tablet due to your hard work. I am running TnT lite 4.2.5 and am very happy with it.
how do you get the screen to never sleep?
Go to settings, display, screen timeout and set to never.

I understand you in regard of this XD i've been having this sound problem, but bought mine overseas (i'm from Chile) and my brother threw the boxing into the trash, so doubt that there is a cheap way to replace mine .
Do you prefer some ROM in particular? Now i'm toying with VEGAn 7, but i can't play more than 2 or 3 mp3 songs without getting sound off, i'll try your "fix" to see if the situation improves

hmm.. I guess VeganTAB 5.1.1 doesn't have that option.. bummer..
i had to change the tablet language to english to find that option for some reason
Unfortunately my moto X 2014 died, and its not in my budget to buy a new moto device right now (the additional cost of paying 20 for mofo to root, and 25 for sunshine to unlock bootloader also grates on my nerves).
I got a OPO instead off swappa within my budget, but i know I am going to miss some of the moto features. However, I know the opo is pretty adaptable too, and I was wondering what comparable features might be available either via ROM/mod/etc for the below.
1) Moto voice = screen off google now, without being plugged in. So i can say "ok google now" at any point, and my phone will light up and listen. I use this to find the phone when ive lost it around the house, when driving, etc. I use it at least 10X a day.
2) Quick gestures: The wrist flip to activate camera on moto is awesome, gets you into camera very fast from any state. Any similar feature, or perhaps knock code to jump right into camera? Physical button mapping?
3) Same as 2, but for turn on flashlight.
4) Active display.... this one, im probably going to lose with the screen not being oled. Any quick way to see my notifications without turning the phone all the way on?

1. There's a "Hey Spandragon" feature which essentially does the same thing. I believe it's a mod though, so you'd need to find it and flash it.
2. Draw a circle on the screen to activate camera, draw a V on the screen to activate torch. Music gestures are: two finger swipe up to play/pause, right facing arrow to skip track, left facing arrow for previous track.
3. See above.
4. No.
Answer for your option - 3
Using an app called Torchie, just press both 'volume buttons' together to turn on/off torch anytime. It runs as a background service and just works anytime, even when screen off (if enabled from Torchie Settings). It kinda make your phone feel like a conventional battery operated torch. No root required.

I’ve used stock or (virtually stock) Android phones for years. My last properly skinned phone was a Samsung Galaxy s II. So using EMUI on this phone has been interesting. There is a lot that I like, but here I’ll describe a few annoying quirks I’ve noticed, plus any partial-solutions I use. Hopefully this will inform perspective and current P20 owners, but also, if you have a solution to any of these problems, do let me know!
- The settings menu is terrible. They have messed with it so much, and added so many settings, that it is often impossible to find what you’re looking for. The solution is to search, which, thankfully, works well.
- The lock screen wallpaper changes every time you unlock the phone. I feel like an idiot, but I can’t work out how to set my own (single!) wallpaper. There are these collections which you can choose between, and then from the lock screen itself you can favourite wallpapers from the collection (not sure what this does) and pause on a wallpaper from the collection, and it looks like you can add your own collections, but this doesn’t seem to work. There MUST be a work around. All I want is the same wallpaper on my lock and home screen!
- Notification content (including media controls) is always hidden on the lockscreen until you authenticate, regardless of the app setting. This seems to be a bug. Setting up face unlock (and swipe to unlock) at least means you can see your lock screen with notification content when at a face-unlock-friendly angle.
- The double tap vol down to launch camera works fine, except when I’m listening to music, when it just turns down the music. No idea why they don’t give this functionality to the lock button like most OEMs.
- Unlock by voice for Google Assistant doesn’t seem to work. I’ve had this problem on other phones so don’t know if I’d blame Huawei. It responds to ‘OK Google’ from screen off (which is better than my OnePlus) but won’t actually unlock.
- The always on display is a bit weak. It doesn’t even properly show notifications.
Anything to add? What EMUI quirks have you found?
Try this for always on display and notifications

I have sometimes problems with starting my spotify automatically when connecting a bluetooth device, I think a sleep mode problem. Another bug is the one with updating widgets. My calendar widget f.e. crashes after a time. found a workaround with "your calendar widget".
But I think all in all its a great phone with great features

You can find this setting in 'Security & privacy' - 'Screen lock & passwords'
=> 'Update covers' to enable and disable it and 'Covers' to choose the pictures to show
EMUI has made me fall back in love with OxygenOS - the way EMUI treats notifications and the lock screen is diabolical. If I unlock my Oneplus 3 but don't read a notification, I can lock it again and the notification remains on the lock screen. The notifications span the whole screen, and work perfectly.
Also, Spotify on OxygenOS uses album cover art as lock screen wallpaper when playing, similar to how EMUI treats the local Music app.
This gonna be a debate for eternity.
People who come from xiaomi or samsung wont feel too awkward with emui,
Different case if you come from AOSP, or Oxygen or LOS.
Best solution is slapping NOVA launcher as soon as you use the phone.
I've used several Huawei phones now, in fact since the Mate 8 they've tended to be my main phones through most of the year (I still try others, but tend to come back for the battery life and cameras, granted the cameras have not been as good as competitors but the camera systems are more fun to me as a person with an amateur interest in photography and I've taken a lot of shots I don't think I could have got from the others). The P8Max was my first, and the UI/OS was a bit of a dogs breakfast - so many things were broken (many due to trying to increase battery longevity) and many other things required complex workarounds beyond installing Nova which I've had on each of them. It's pretty well fine now, but if you're coming from Samsung or others it's very different and will take a bit of time to adjust to - particularly the level of granular control you have on things affecting battery life. Once you get a handle on it you'll probably end up appreciating a lot of what it offers.
Google Assistant works fine but it makes conflict with Huawei voice control (so turn off one of them)
Double tap volume down to launch camera is a great idea but why the hell it does not work when players or different apps are in the background.....
Hi there!
Setting your own lockscreen carousel:
Settings>security & privacy>screen lock & passwords>magazine unlock>subscriptions>added by me>add>choose image
You can create your own cycle of wallpapers.
In themes App make sure you set me>customize>lock screen style>magazine unlock
I wish adjusting the volume on Bluetooth headphones adjusted the master volume like on all previous phones I've had instead of acting like an in-line control.

Hi how do you get rid of double tap on home screen it's do annoying it's a short cut to access latest apps that have used I have Nova Which is excellent and I'm coming from a Samsung S7 to a P20 pro please help !!
To enable or stop scrolling wallaper just swype from the bottom on the lockscreen and you will see Pause button at the left. if you press that, the scrolling will be disabled and a "play" icon will remain.
I've debloating quite a lot from emui.
Installed swap torpedo
Runs faster now and battery lasts longer.
Huawei should offer a vanilla update.
Last time I saw so much bloat was on Samsung.
Unnecessary.
EMUI was one of the reasons I ditched my P10 after 6 months, went back to an iPhone, then to a Nokia 5...
Have any of the roms developed for the P20 done away with EMUI otherwise this device will be another one i'll have to remove from the list of potential upgrades.
Killing foreground apps
Hi, just bought the p20 pro after years with Samsung. I have noticed that it often kills apps that I am currently using, sending me back to the home screen (reminds me of a crash to desktop in windows computers).
After some googling similar problems I adjusted the app auto start and ignore battery optimization settings and it did get better, although it is still killing apps which I presume is using a lot of memory or battery (or both?), for example posting stuff on Instagram (Instagram is whitelisted from optimization and managed manually).
This is really bugging me, anyone else with the same problem? I'm running android 8.1.0, EMUI 8.1.0 and memory always stays between 2,5 and 3 GB.

Yeah, it's turning out to be a deal breaker for me.. Too bad since I really like the phone. Just hope it's a bug ?
Something seems to be happening to spotify when it is running in the background using my bluetooth headphones. I get stuttering and odd pauses, its basically unusable.
I have found if I use andriod auto to run spotify or use the wake lock program to keep the phone in a higher power mode it seems to help. If I have the charger plugged in it works fine as well. It appears to be some sort of power saving issue (yes I have told the phone to ignore spotify's power usage) or something to do with bluetooth power saving. But it works fine in a car.
Thats my only real complaint, and had I known I would have this issue I would have probably grabbed a onePlus device. Using Sure 215's
One thing I did notice, and I also fixed the problem quite simply.
I turned the display Resolution to HD from FHD my thinking was with a lower resolution I'd have better battery and better performance.
What I got was worse.
60fps lagged so badly it was unusable.
Transitions especially to the Google feed lagged and was annoying.
Asphalt 9 lagged and was extremely crap.
Turned FHD back on, all went back to silky smoothes??
Logic didn't exactly prevail here but it works.
So in short if you've turned on adaptive resolution or HD.
Turn it off
I'm facing this weird problem with my p20 pro. In. 128 and 131 and 152 firmware versions whenever in have an incoming call my screen doesn't wake up to show my who is calling me, unless I press the power button or the fingerprint sensor. If the call is missed my screen wakes up normally to show me the missed call notification. Any solution?? I have no fingerprint lock or pass code lock. Just swipe.

When you hand your phone to granny to take a photo of you, can she get the job done? Rate this thread to express how you deem the OnePlus 6T's camera software. A higher rating indicates that the software is easy to use, fast, uncluttered, and inclusive of advanced features for when you need them.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
On my offical 48+ hours with the OP6T. Having issues setting up face unlock the phone is keeping me in the loop of entering pin/pattern and not opening the face unlock settings, maybe update or software glitch patch. just reset the phone after a full 39+ hour discharge and recharge of the battery, any help with the issue would be great.
I will give it points for the pro mode but outside of that, I find it could use a few more features. If the V40 camera app comes to the V30, I'm going back to it.
Split screen button is unnecessarily hidden under 3 dots on the multitasking screen. This option should be easy access there could be even a gest available for split screen

True. I'm not a Huawei fan but I like their knuckle gestures a lot. Swiping with the knuckle from left to right or view versa enters split screen mode for example.

One plus 6T is good rather than other phones in its software and configuration.
Normally my Camera opens "instantly".
I encounter from time to time that my camera takes more than a second to start. It's a really fast phone, so what's the probleme here?
I got used to reliability on my OnePlus 5T. 6T is, well, lackluster. I need to reboot it at least once per day. hyperion takes ages to open and the screen is frozen in the meantime. Bluetooth... I am using 5-6 bt devices, and only 4 are on the list when you change volume. Weirdly, it's the disconnected ones, not the ones I am actually using. Sometimes the sound will just ignore BT and go through the phone speaker no matter what it's set to do - another reboot needed. Last weekend Sygic (satnav) crashed so badly the phone went black. No reaction. After holding all the buttons for 10 sec it rebooted to safe mode. Another reboot to normal, and all my settings, launcher, were gone.
Honestly, I want to love it. I do. But I actually hate it. Too bad I already gave my op5t to my daughter. It was soo much better.
Wow, today it just lost audio on voice calls. Why? Because previously I've been casting to a TV. So when the call came the stupid thing didn't know where to reroute audio. So after a while it decided f**k this, it's probably nothing important anyway.
only fixed by reboot. God I hate this phone!
I'm on stable 10 by the way.
I'm really happy with my OP 6T, just wished the camera was better.
I mean come on the secondary camera is only used for depth effect, so is only active in portrait mode...
The only other issue I have is the ambient display doesn't activate as it should imo, only a "hard pick up" will get it to switch on.
So I know there are other android 10 threads out there but I felt like y'all should get a list of whats new in front of your eyes instead of looking around:
**Improved night camera quality - Yes I have felt and improvement it is slight however, but it did get somewhat better.
**Google's new navigation gestures (I felt like I should write this because last updates, Sony phones did not get the nav gestures) however the new gestures seem just a tiny bit laggy -rarely though- and when in landscape mode, the slide down bar drops not in a symmetric way but rather drops right sided which makes things look out of place
**New CinemaPro app features - the app now has the levels of both phone microphones like on the v50 and also has aspect ratio check lines (if you want to shoot a video on cinema pro it only shoots 21/9 but you can have check lines to see whats being viewed in any other aspect ratio you choose and you also have a meter inside the camera to show you if youre in the frame or not)
**Dark mode - works on most apps, but I can't seem to activate it on my phone app, any suggestions?
**UI click sounds changed - yup! I love the new ones they sound more like Android rather than Sony and I do love Android!
**FINGERPRINT!!!! - Yes!! finally fingerprint scanner is way more responsive now!! before it was sooo strict about the cleanness and the angle, I registered 3 fingers and it only could recognize one of them because of the angle it provides, but now every finger on any angle with less cleanness is verry responsive! (could still be worked on, but im so happy with it at this moment)
**Sadly no more face unlock, even though I never used it but it worked surprisingly fast when I had the option available, but now it doesnt exist, good thing they improved the fingerprint scanner XD
**Slightly improved battery life - I only noticed it when I tested it, but if youre not a detailed tester you wont be able to recognize throughout the day, maybe if youre a slight user, yes you will notice the phone lasting 2/3 hours longer (overall usage and not screen on time) because I can tell they worked greatly on improving the idle drain.
**Speaker loudness - I think the phone got louder? I am not sure but defiantly notice something that didnt exist, not necessarily higher quality but I do notice something increasing in volume I cant tell if its volume or distortion lol but when I go to max volume there is something that makes you think, a little lower than max sounded like max on previous android but I cant tell if max here is actually louder or just more noisy especially with dolby atmos
**Some people reported signal drops? or bad signal? I havent noticed a difference here so thats good news
**Performance - the phone was fast enough to almost be the king of speed and smoothness so yah even if its better on android 10 I cant even feel the difference but it is VERY smooth even on a new android which means its pretty sick!
**Recent apps button (in old school 3 button nav bar) doesnt seem to do anything if you have custom launcher, but works on default sony launcher.
UPDATE!!
**one handed mode, which I use alot when im in bed, cant seem to be activated in the new navigation gestures, because you have to double tap home button but u dont have it in new gestures, so heres what i did:
Enabled side sense, i know it doesn't work properly, but now you have an option of controlling how to access it, You can actually enable the inside the screen tap rather than from the side (if you have a case on, this will really help you) , adjust sensitivity, position, transparency of the slide activators, and change the gestures of how it works, now i changed the double tap side sense from opening the side sense menu, to activate one handed mode, and now side sense works smoothly with gestures and i can activate one handed mode in new android nav gestures, youre welcome
Thx u for this thread
UI seems a lot smoother. I'm liking the android 10 gestures which adds to the "smoothness".
Can't really say about photo quality, haven't been using the camera much. I can definitely notice a better battery life compared to before.
Basically no issues just yet! Aside from me getting used to the new gestures (+ side sense)
Im using the google dialer app in play store. It has a way better ui, better icons and dark mode compatible. Set it as default and it's all good. I don't understand why sony have decided to use the "stock" google messenger app but not dialer... the dialer seems customized in some way idk
There is a bug that I noticed: when going back home using the gesture, if the app icon is on the dock, the icons a bit laggy and will flash for once. don't really know how to describe it
Someone can make a full review of android 10 and post it on youtube ?

Yah you just reminded me to add that bug, also if you on landscape mode the slide down bar is off place slides from the right rather than the middle of the screen

Does anyone else have a weird audio bug where when you pause music or a video the sound spikes up for a second before it pauses. I've only tested it on the native music app and YouTube. I don't use any music streaming service such as Spotify or Pandora. I think I've concluded that this is a software bug since I when I flashed back to the previous firmware and didn't have the same problem. Maybe my device is just strange. Any opinion?

Precisely, IDK if that happens with pixel or one plus devices, but I know that it happens with Xperia 1. When you go back to the app, let's just say it's inside a folder, app shows in the dock then the folder pops back. Then if you open an app let's just say dialer then you switch to camera with recent menu and you go back to home screen it shows dialer app on where the camera icon then you get the camera icon back in the dock. Am I right?
