I need someone that is willing to test the new method of rooting. Obviously you need an LS997, but also you need:
TO BE WILLING TO BRICK YOUR PHONE!
This should be totally safe, but as long as you have the understanding that your phone will be toast
and having root is just a bonus, then you are good!
Have a USB stick to flash FWUL (not going to play around with Windows - do not ask)
An SD card. It only has to be big enough to hold TWRP and the engineering aboot
Be able to use an IRC client
I need to be able to talk to you in real time in case a problem arises.
Please don't PM me -- reply in the thread so that others can see that you volunteered. If we have several that are willing to try it, I will work with two people -- any more than that and it is just a nightmare if something goes wrong.
I am going this route with the LS997 because of what happened with the H918. I had a bare set of instructions that I made WAY too many assumptions with, and people bricked their phones. If I am online with you, as long as your phone doesn't lose power, and you don't just reboot it for some reason, I can fix any issues that come up as long as you are still in download mode.

Sounds good I'll look for you tomorrow.

Saw that you're taking the rest of the evening off (enjoy!) but just wanted to post this tonight in case you're looking for any more volunteers on this tomorrow or the rest of the week.
I just received a V30 in the mail today from Sprint so I'll be turning my V20 into my "tinkering" phone and am willing to risk bricking it if things go sideways. Just let me know if you need another volunteer and we can give it a go.
Cheers
All I can say is Thank you

The LS997 has an additional qfuse blown that locks down lafd even more than it already is. I gave the full description on the LAF dev thread.
Suffice it to say, going to have to keep looking...

Curious to see if you had any success in getting the test devices rooted?
I have an LS997 on ZVD ARB1 March 5, 2018 security patch and would like to root it. Whatever goes.
any updates?
LS997 on ZVD ARB1 as a spare and i use a tmobile v20 as daily driver so brick the hell out of the ls997 if need be... Or get root successfully.

Update to oreo if you want, if your hesitant about getting root, the only way the LS997 is going to get root is if the 996 gets incremented to arb1

So I just bought a Slide on eBay, but I wanna go ahead and get things started.
I can do most of the work I think right now before the phone (since it's Sense 3), but I'll need a few brave testers with ADB knowledge and who aren't afraid to flash things.
Somebody help this bro out, he does good work.
You should try this forum:
http://support.t-mobile.com/community/phones_data_devices/android/mytouch_4g_slide?view=all
It seems like most of the people on here like our phones and want to root and rom them, while the people on the t-mobile forum want to complain and cry. I'm sure you'd have pretty good luck on there lowballing someone for their phone!
Got one on eBay a couple of minutes ago. See you guys on the other side . Thanks for the replies.
Sweet can't wait to see what you can do with this phone!
If you don't mind me asking, how much was it on eBay?
I currently have a MT3GS I bought from Craigslist awhile back - got a pretty good deal from someone who decided he'd rather have an iphone, it came with the original box and all the stuff.
Been debating on whether it was worth an update to a 4GS.

It was $340... it said it was refurbished so I jumped on it. That's just around the price range I was looking for, too (extremely hopeful price range).
$400 seems to be the area in which the used ones are selling for...

I've been one of the ones to dive in headfirst around here so i'll help as I can.
This week, and next, are gonna be real tight on time for me. I still have a few threads around here I have to update...and just can't get more then a few minutes in front of a terminal at a time.
When I get the chance to update my threads, I can sit here and have the phone installing (or whatever) while I do.
Glad to see another dev jumping into the pool here with the MT4GS - it's a sick piece of hardware.
Your list has made it incredibly easy to list out all the apps (I usually have to go through them one by one and try and figure everything out, usually takes 1-2 hours per phone )
Anyways, I can't test it as I don't have the phone yet but Bloater should be setup for it. At least for the apps and stuff. I'll have to add WiFi calling later.
Test it out and let me know what works and what doesn't. I tried not to include anything I wasn't sure about or anything that could be potentially harmful to remove.
If it doesn't recognize something as installed or uninstalled it just means my MD5s mismatch what it was expecting, easy fix.
Install it as a normal APK
I can new a lab rat if needed as I still haven't committed to this as a dd

Are any of you guys familiar with IRC? This may be easier to do everything there instead of posting back and fourth.
We could try #mt4gs @ freenode
Other than that, I may have my statusbar mods ported today. Just need to fix the resource IDs up I think. I'll need to have someone test.
I'm using Paul's deodex as a base for now since I couldn't find an RUU. So if anyone is running that, you'll just have to flash two files over to test if this works or not .

Hi, so jimbridgman and I have been working on the Boot Loader unlock stuff, and may have an idea. It seems to easy to be true but is worth a shot.
Now, this means we need someone to test it. Here is what we are asking for:
1. at least 1 person to test, we will not need more than 1 person for this initially, but if it fails we will likely need more so feel free to volunteer anyways and we can renegotiate the terms for a later test
2. you must have access to a computer with fastboot and be familiar with how to use it.
3. You must be familiar with how to get yourself out of a general softbrick, such as a bootloop.
4. You will be paid 20% or $150 of the bootloader unlock bounty (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837363), whichever is lower if and only if this method of unlocking succeeds.
5. If this fails, which it most likely will, You will almost definitely be HARD BRICKED. That means you now own an expensive paper weight. That said you will likely be able to get a replacement through AT&T if you are with them so make sure you know your options.
6. You must be on ICS or Be willing and know how to upgrade to it.
7. Your phone must be a U.S. AT&T model

You must also fully understand that we do not take responsibility for what happens to your phone and we are well aware that it will likely brick. you CANNOT hold us or anyone else responsible if you are unable to restore or get a replacement.
That said we will do our best to help you unbrick if possible, but it likely will not be.
Please reply here if you are interested and Jim or I will PM you with more info. feel free to ask any questions you have here as well.
I'm in. PM me in you need to, I have nothing to lose, and (hopefully) everything to gain! :good:
Thanks lkrasner!
So this will test to see if we are even able to use that BL we found, just so that everyone has an inkling of what we are doing.
If your still looking for volunteers Im in
I have fastboot on both windows and ubuntu
I have recovered from many soft bricks
I am willing to sacrafice my phone if I need to
I've got to do a bit of charging - didn't realize I let my phone power off with no juice, so I'll report back in about an hour or so... Sorry.

Can you tell us what you tried or a simplified run down?
mind sharing the details & result?
Without getting too involved in details, basically the awesome developers here made up a flashable .zip using the NS Bootloader. Flashed fine, no brick, but as Jim mentioned above, still locked. Also, as mentioned by Jim, he and the other guys are still tweaking things, so please... EVERYONE... stay patient and don't start getting all worked up just yet. I'll leave the rest of the updates to him, lkrasner, alteredlikeness, and/or cogeary.
And guys, please don't explode this thread with asking for updates, when they come, you will be informed as soon as they are discovered. Just stay calm, patient, and keep fingers and toes crossed...
Thanks for letting us know what's going on. I'm just an info junkie. Its all for the bigger picture. Plus when I talk about it with people like my pops who's been using Linux and embedded systems since the beginning I can give a little run down. Who knows maybe a fresh idea might pop out. Again thanks for the update and all the work.

Once you have flashed have you tried doing the fastboot commands to attempt to retrieve the device id and unlock keys that are needed for the Moto unlock bootloader site? Maybe the NS Bootloader is locked but has the ability to be unlocked via this site. Just a thought.

I was thinking the same thing.
I am no expert, but that seems highly unlikely. considering that moto doesn't support unlocking our device, and it is their web site you need to get the codes from.
I cracked open the S4 Active Geohot root APK and it seemed to use a Sony Xperia exploit. Then it turned out I was not the first to do so....
Thank you to scott14719 for twice pointing me to this great post from jcase and the second time I actually followed it. Apparently, that was already figured out before our update hit.
That gets us to DooMLoRD. Seems to have a great way to get it done. Now I unfortunately have been coming off a week of Heck. Initially I was looking to try to see if I can crack root. Then a storm hit and knocked out my power for an evening. Now I have a personal mission critical problem that requires I reserve the phone like a regular user for a few days. ( I really need some back up devices for these instances)
Anybody willing to look through this thread. and follow the directions on this page.
Lets root so we can flash away.
Thanks for the mention, but it was jcase' post. He took the time to put the links together.
And thank you for getting this started. I am not on MF3 and don't plan to be for some time, but it sure will help a lot of people out present and future.
Again, thanks, and I hope others can pitch in and help with the effort.

Well guys its been a blast. Most of you know me as the creator of DirtySanta. Some of you know me on a more personal note. Then some of you don't even know me. Those of you who have been paying attention the last couple days in either the DirtySanta Thread or those that I have been in close contact with will know what this is about. I bricked my v20(again) but this time it somehow damaged the hardware itself. Lately you will have noticed that alot of major Devs have either moved on or have been thinking about moving on. @SaintZ93 and @Team DevDigitel have moved on. If I remember correctly @Chaz187 is also close to then end of their runs with the v20. As for me, this is my last goodbye. As of this post i will be ceasing all support for DirtySanta(support from me atleast, most of the questions asked these days are repeats) and any project for the v20 that I have released or have been working on(PA).
However... I will not be leaving the scene altogether. I will be going over to the S8+ forums.
I will also leave any hosted files I currently have up for dirtysanta alone. There will be no further updates for dirtysanta(not like there were anyway) and I will be leaving you guys with a parting gift: The secret to restoring a non kdz device back to stock.
I take no responsibility for your device and I WILL NOT provide any support for this.
To revert a non kdz device back to stock you need the following 3 things: Your abootbackup.img made during the dirtysanta process, Your bootbackup.img made during the dirtysanta process and the final item is an untouched matching [REDACTED].
Once again Thanks to everyone in the v20 community. Things could have gone better at times but I think you guys will survive with out me.
EDIT: Since people really wanna know. you need matching abootbackup.img, bootbackup.img and matching untouched system.img
This is the end of Sprint development! Kinda sucks!

I think you're leaving too early.. Sure, the v20 is going to be obsolete soon, but at the moment the v20 is really cheap, an amazing bargain for a great phone.
The opportunities for making interesting custom ROMs is really taking off, especially with the H990DS being rooted.
Sure, get an S8 but get another v20 and make the most of the great work done on it

How do you think development is just taking off when rhe ones responsible for development are saying sayonara? They arent leaving early.
You arrived late.
You worked so hard to do what u did for us theres nothing i can say so sum it up in words we had our run ins im threads but i wish u the best of luck for all u did im eteranlly grateful to u and all the awsome devs here u made a cool phone better
Well my replacement is coming in 7-10 days lol. I dont doubt it comes back on zv8 and a sure way to make sure i dont provide more updates. They killed my device lol so off to the moto z force i go. Im very thankful for the new friendships and team work this device brought to us, as well a new amount of knowledge was obtained through a crazy transition from su to magisk, the whole lg specifics, and just making things work for a great group of people. it was fun. DevDigitel Roms have been closed as of this morning. Thanks everyone!
You guys are awesome, thanks for the efforts you put forth and all that assistance you give.
Looking on the bright side of things, the small level of development isn't necessarily a bad thing for the V20. It has so many awesome features already, what is something that is so needed that requires extensive development? Sure, we can always try out new features. But lets look at the past, where the development community basically made a phone usable between extending battery life or adding features that should have already been there.
The entire scenario of development for phones has changed in my opinion. Take with a grain of salt, im no dev just a mooch that has been here for many many years. But seems in the past, development was a MUST. Now, honestly, I wouldn't be devastated if my phone was bone stock. But with that said, I sure do appreciate the additional features you guys have developed.
Another thing, replacing phones themselves and upgrading has changed. Honestly, I don't want a phone that doesn't have a headphone jack or removable battery. So going to hang on to this one as long as possible! Where beforehand, new phone brought features we WANT not DREAD.
Best of luck to you guys in the future!
Yep thank you 2151, I learned a lot and still have a ton left to learn, but I definately appreciate all you've done for the v20, I have a love/hate relationship with mine. I love the audio and hardware quality, but there wasn't much easy about modding the thing, as a novice anyway. Felt like smashing mine a few times. I know you veteran's get frustrated with people asking questions noobs should be able to find in the forums, but if ur trying to learn it can be tough to find the exact info you need to know, and there is so much to learn. Just saying in general anyway, not u specifically. I see a lot of guys getting chewed out on here, some deservedly, some not Imo. Samsung pretty much lost my business for the crap they released last year, note7 and a 10" pos tablet where the touchscreen didn't work right and they weren't gonna replace, I'm Lg from now on I think. If they stick to what they've been doing anyway, we'll see.
I'll be switching to the S8+ soon as I can afford it or the Note 8 .
I don't think we've met, but I wanna say thanks for your hard work, and all the other devs involved in the V20 here. I just ordered one because I needed a new phone (problems with current), my son's V20 impressed me, and most importantly, it can be rooted! I've rooted every Android device I've personally owned, and won't buy one that can't be rooted. I just can't stomach being told I can't access files on my SD card, can't block annoying ads, can't remove annoying bloatware, etc.
I know I'm late to the party, but the upside will hopefully be that you guys have worked out all the kinks. Thanks again, and enjoy the S8+!

Yeah, I agree with you here. I have a slight feeling they might actually never get released. Additionally, leaving the consumer in the dark so blatantly is somewhat annoying.
But why have they a TUT how to unlock the bootloader?

You're going to get the same stock reply the rest of us have gotten. Something to the effect that they plan on releasing them, but don't have an ETA at this time. I harass them any time they tweet something. My reply is always, "image files, please".
I'm guessing images will come when they finish the next major update. Why release images for a build that will be replaced shortly after? A month ago in an AMA, they said they were almost done preparing for system images and that they were fast tracking the Oct. security patch update. What I take from that is they were prioritizing that update to get it out fast, which likely put other efforts behind. If the system images were almost ready for release, then perhaps they're just sitting on it for the time being.
If it were me, I'd wait on releasing old system images if newer builds were expected to be ready shortly after. Yes, I understand people may want to revert to an older build for one reason or another. But putting out old builds for users to use, flash, take apart, etc. only for a new one to come out shortly after is kind of wasting those users' time in some regards.
I have hope so i wait.
Number one reasons holding my purchase back on this phone. I want to see official root and TWRP released before buying.
If no development gonna start on this phone, I'll wait to see the official OnePlus 5t announcement, as I know that will have big XDA development.

We are developer friendly, and have started the process of uploading files to support building custom ROMs. We have recently released the kernel source to Essential.com/developer, and the factory images should be coming within the next few weeks. Here is my answer, that came really quick:
"Hi Criss,
Thank you for reaching out. Glad you are enjoying the phone!
We are developer friendly, and have started the process of uploading files to support building custom ROMs. We have recently released the kernel source to Essential.com/developer, and the factory images should be coming within the next few weeks. I don't have a confirmed date to provide at this point though.
Hope that helps. If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. Enjoy your day!
Sincerely,
Erich

I hope the system images come quickly. I'm slated to receive the phone by the 9th, so it's be nice to have some custom roms within a few weeks of receiving the device.

Yep, pretty much the same response I received weeks ago.
I Would like to upgrade from my Nexus 6 to PH-1 specially with all these price drops but without factory images anything goes wrong and you can't fastboot back to stock
I won't pull the trigger until they release it. I want root/TWRP/xposed working on this device
btw anybody knows if the dual boot thing similar to the Pixels is going to be a problem for xposed framework?

Everything already works. I'm rooted, have twrp (semi functional) and running xposed
