Best camera settings for P20? - Huawei P20 Questions & Answers

Hello,
been using the P20 for a few days now and it's great but I'm not sure how to get the best out of the camera. Been having it with AI on and 20Mp but a lot of the pictures seem overexposed.
If anyone could enlighten me that'd be great.
Thanks

Hello!
I disabled the AI, it oversaturates colors and the contrast and sharpness are too high for my taste. Shooting in photo mode without the AI gets me pretty good results, I then edit my shots in Lightroom CC, it's a free app, try it if you haven't already If you have the feeling that your shots are overexposed you can always focus on a bright part of your scene and the phone will adjust the exposure accordingly.
For best results you want to be shooting in pro mode and better yet enable the RAW format. It's more work to edit those RAW photos but you do get the best quality!
Have fun with your phone

I also turned off the AI. If you want to have more control you can use RAW

Thanks for the replies! I'll try out RAW mode and Lightroom CC and disable the AI. I guess there would be a great change of quality if I went from 20 MP 4:3 to 18:9 as it's only 8MP?

I did some photos today and i must say that there are few iritating things in our phones software.
One of the is HDR mode wich is hidden ant we cant usue it in auto mode

Disable picture sharpening

Just got my s7 and I'm really disappointed about the fotos it takes.. Each shot has a huge sharpen effect that gave the picture a fake feel / effect!!!
Is there any way to just save the picture as they really are?!
Thanks!
Use pro mode and enable raw in the settings.
Yes, take shots in RAW mode then do your own post-processing in Adobe Lightroom.

Thanks a lot guys, but I've already tried and it seems almost the same: when I take pictures at people, the skin texture is really far from natural

Is there a RAW capture mode?

GSMArena's review just came out and they state that there is no option to capture raw files with this device.
That's sound very odd. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks.
It's not true there is a option for pro mode which captures in raw
Their article said two things :
There's a Pro mode for those who want more control over the camera. It comes with adjustment sliders for white balance, exposure compensation, ISO, shutter speed, and focus. RAW capture is available as well, although HTC claims the majority of consumers don't use this feature.

So, in camera PRO mode, RAW mode is here
Then,
We can almost overlook the absence of RAW, but it is signifficantly harder to swallow the fac that HTC's camera app does not offer the ability to change the frame rates that video is recorded in

So this part is only about taking a video in RAW mode. This mode principally exists fir DSLR cameras, and if I don't mae mistake, never have been introduced on smartphones
The only regret I have with the camera PRO mode is that the U11 only takes RAW+JPG photo. You can't take RAW pictures only so .... we have to take care at the storage

Thanks for the clarification! Glad that raw capture is available on this phone.

Improving camera quality

Hello everyone, I will be getting my Mi A1 in a week or two and I'm really looking forward to it. Well.. l maybe not the camera as I've seen it get some harsh reviews, especially in low light. That's why I want a thread here on how to improve the image quality. Looking into the matter it seems like google camera with hdr+ is the best bet so far? However can we share settings and tweaks here to improve it further. Also posting pictures for comparison versus stock would be great. :highfive::good::good:
I have an Mi A1 as my moto broke and needed one staright away. Being in Asia for work I had easy access to it.
I have used dark cameras for. Long time and can see that the algorithm to bump up the iso could do with a bit of modifying.. I have not had much chance to take shots.. took about 10 in total..
I will take a few shots in differing light and then import them into PC Lightroom and push a few shadows and raise iso and see what is the best result.
That info might be useful to those involved.. of what I have seen, the focus is okay, but high iso is a killer.. will report here again in a week or so.
It helps if you Untick "Enhance low light images automatically" under Settings and then shoot pictures under low light conditions with HDR on. The HHT or Hand Held Twilight mode doesn't help much also..

I don't use HHT .. isn't of much help..
Hdr is on
HHT off
Untick enhance low light images..
I tried every combination, thats the best one, if u keep the camera still.. at least the ISO problem is partially reduced.
But if you use manual mode . You can really get some good shots
Here are is a sample on manual mode. I used a light source, an led torch.
Thanks a lot: I will try, also in manual mode.
Anyway did you try Google Camera, and what is your opinion about it compared with stock camera ?

Which version of Gcam and what settings do you use? I can clearly see vast improvement of low light photos taken with Gcam.

Incredible difference
MI A1 DETAILED REVIEW AFTER COUPLE OF DAYS OF USAGE.
Pros :
1) Potrait shots are exceptionally well in good light conditions.
2) HDR works pretty well in Daylight.
3) The Dirac Sound built in is fabulous both in terms of speakers & on headphones.
4) Build quality is amazing.
5) Voice quality is very very clear.
Cons:
1) Night mode is really really bad.(Too much noise & Shaky pictures are captured ,loses focus most of the time)
2) Lack of image stabilization while clicking pictures in HDR mode as well as normal mode.
(Slight shaking of phone loses focus in HDR mode and makes pictures blurry)(MUST NEEDED IN NEXT UPDATE)
3) HDR mode in artificial light feels too much exposed over bright light and image feels too artificial.
4) No Electronic image stabilization (EIS) while shooting video its too shaky & not upto the mark.(MUST NEEDED IN NEXT UPDATE)
5) 2X shots are not that great when zoomed even 50% and also are much noisy at times.
6) The UI is smooth but feels at times having less transiston.(Forced swipe has to be done from up to down & from down to up)
7) Selfies are bit artificial at times want it more natural and too much beautification is being applied.
8) In phone app while clearing the call history the app crashes and doesn't clear the call history. It force stops.
Shots by stock cam, with optical zoom 10x and our 2x optical zoom. In last pictures I used digital zoom, too.

Camera 2 Api level and Raw shoting

Hello, has the g8 plus camera2 api enabled? With which level? Can it shoot in Raw?
Dunno about camera2 api but I guess so. Shooting in raw is possible in manual mode through the stock camera app. Actually, IMHO it is a good camera, the unique problem is the shutter speed because in manual mode has its max at 1/3 sec. I haven't tried to shoot the stars yet but it may be a problem. On the other hand, I have to say that the night mode works very well and it could do miracles.

Open Camera now allows P20 PRO to record video using all lenses

Hi all, you might know this already but I just found out and it seems like absolutely great news for this phone. The latest Open Camera update allows you to record video using every camera on the phone. Even the monochrome one works. No need to have perfect lighting conditions in order for the camera to switch between main and telephoto. You now have a dedicated camera button which lets you select what lens to use. Did you get the chance to try it out? I didn't have any issues yet.
Link please
Here it is:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.sourceforge.opencamera
Is the recording quality improved?
I'm not sure. You do have to option to record with maximum 80Mbps but I I find it hard to tell if that is any different from the 30Mbps standard rate. Video looks crisp and clear, colors are very good, especially if you lock the white balance.
Quality seems not as good.. Also can not use Camera API 2, for high res to get extra control in manual mode.
I'm not sure why you can't use camera2 api. For me it works and I can select iso and exposure during filming. I have a CLT L29.

whats your max resolution for recording video using Camera2 API?
For the 40mp lens and the telephoto lens, I have 3840x2160. The monochrome camera however has a resolution of 3264x1840 for video.
Sorry for necropost, but anyone tried open camera for B&W photos? Does it allow exposure bracketing? Raw or at least png for file saving? I would like to try p20 pro just for that monochrome lens...
You can save RAW with the B&W camera but for some reason the pictures appear purple.
