Let's see... It wasn't doing this before. But I was having problems with I believe the charging bottom part, as it wouldn't charge below high battery levels, like 30-50%, and the ultimately the power button stopped working prompting me to order parts which included with button, display and housing to make it like brand new. Well, I did F up with the screen.
Details for those interested in doing it: before permanently adhering display to mid-frame with new tape/glue/whatever you using, make sure to fit the bottom end in first(however possible with ribbon connector holding top in. not easy) otherwise, as you lay it down and sticker is sticking and you didn't nudge display upwards enough, bottom won't fit without a struggle, and my struggle caused me to ruin the $40 display in a couple ways. So careful
So I'm hoping it's the charging part, $25 bucks, no big deal though without troubleshooting skills on these electronics IDK for sure. So anyone have any experience/ideas on this? I guess I should just order the charging (module?) and if it doesn't help, whatever, return and pay $6 shipping right?

Hi all, Merry Christmas!
Well, my Christmas isnt so merry this year. Two families (friends with their kids) stopped by for Christmas eve dinner and my son with their kids were playing and the next thing i know, my tf300's screen cracked and no display. I can see the back light turned on, but no display. My TF300's alarm was beeping, so I am guessing that the tablet is still functional, but the screen is so messed up it wont show any display.
My question is, should I even attempt to fix the screen? Or just purchased a new one? I saw many cracked screen pics and all of them were able to turn their screen on.
Please advise on what to do.
Thanks,
Sid.
What's cracked? There 2 components in there: the LCD and the Digitizer. I assume if nothing shows then the LCD is gone, but that's a guess because if there's a crack across it normally would still show some (messed up) image like vertical or horizontal lines. Now the LCD is beneath the Digitizer. If you see cracks on the surface also, that means the Dig is gone too. Which makes it easier but costlier.
You can order both for around $150.00, but replacing can be a pain unless you've delicate hands. Separating the LCD from the digitizer is boring enough but you must to do this to get to the bezel. The more meticulous part is to remove the plastic bezel around the digitizer to reuse on the new one. You have to scrape around the edge because the two parts are initially bonded together by some really strong glue.
In my opinion, it's not worth it to take it to a shop as they would charge an inordinate amount for a used device (around $200.00!!). For the inept, it's certainly damn if you do and damn if you don't. If you need more info 'bout doing it, I can help as I've done it before. Alternatively, if you decide to get a new one and part this out, I am looking for the cable and possibly touchscreen board for mine. Maybe we can work something out. Whatever.

I am not so sure what's cracked actually. But, if i press the power button, there's just black screen, no display whatsoever although i can see light shines through the cracks. So I am guessing both the LCD and the Dig are gone.
I am thinking about parting the broken one out and buy a refurbished one from walmart and get the walmart protection plan, so I dont have to worry about a broken tablet for at least 2 years.
So I ended up cracking my screen and installed a replacement last night. Everything seemed fine but I noticed, after putting it back together, that any slight bit of pressure or shock to the top causes my N5 to shut off.
I took it apart again to make sure all of the ribbons were properly connected and to take a second look and everything appears fine. I didn't have this problem prior to the replacement and I was very gentle during the tear down and reassembly so I don't the the CPU or anything on it is damaged. Other than the top being hyper sensitive the phone works perfectly.
Any ideas on what the problem is or could be?
SOLVED(sorry, I don't know how to change the title)
I just wanted to fill in anyone curious or running into this problem in the future on how I resolved the issue.
So after some time I narrowed the problem down to the second back cover (the one with the camera lens and beneath the Nexus branded cover) making contact with the motherboard. More specifically, compressing the power management IC with its aluminum cover. You want to make sure that chip is laid flush which was a PITA, for me at least, because the headphone jack and earpiece speaker wants to push it up and out. What I did was put the jack in, lay the board on top, then gradually adjusted the jack with tweezers while gently pushing the motherboard down until the board was flush, then placing the earpiece speaker in.
I then placed the second back cover on and tightened the screws until I could feel them just slightly putting pressure on the cover. I can't stress how light this pressure is as it is the key in resolving this issue. To compare it to changing your oil filter on your car; when you can feel the filter make solid contact with the block and you then turn it about another half turn to seal it; it's like that but without that half turn.
Anyway, I hope this helps anyone else unfortunate enough to both break their screen and then have their phone randomly shut down when any pressure is applied after fixing it.
hello

I bought mine off of eBay and it cost me $150. I could be wrong but it looked like the screen can't be separated from the frame. You might want to keep that in mind when purchasing because there are sellers that sell the screen without a frame. Tearing down the N5 was pretty simple. The hardest part for me was getting the back cover off as there are 4 (two on each side) large clips. If you end up bending the clips any, you can push them back to shape to keep the back from creaking like every Samsung I've ever owned. There's a nice guide on iFixit if you want to look at the process prior to ordering a new part.
I've read from others that you can send your phone into LG and they'll repair the screen for you. When you send it in they'll email a quote to you within a day. The price I keep seeing is $146 and I have no idea what the turn around on that is.
Well, I knew the time would come, I shouldn't be so picky on cases. I had my phone in my lap, hopped out of the car and heard my phone drop from my lap. Totally forgot it was there. One corner impact and it cracked my screen, which is disappointing because I drop my iPhone all the time and nothing happens to it. But, at least it's not the whole screen that's shattered, might even be a waste to replace it. The screen is responsive still.
With that said, anyone know where I can get a replacement screen or should I have a "professional" do it?
I'm looking at this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-Google-N...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item233373ec1c
That way there's no damage to the frame.
well yeah i want to know that too and how much it cost me to replace the screen

Ebay link looks OK. I guess you can replace screen yourself, if you have "straight" hands. Nexus 5 Teardown should helps you.
BTW, more Parts for Nexus 5.
Well, if you are going to try this one yourself, it's one of the "easier" ones. As long as you get the LCD assembly and frame that is already put together. On eBay, there are some vendors selling the the assembly + frame for $135. No really crazy tools are needed. Shouldn't be anything too catastrophic happen since you are changing the whole front of the phone. If you were trying to separate the top glass, I'd definitely advise against if you aren't a pro. If you absolutely don't feel comfortable with doing it and can be without the phone for a few days, then feel free to PM me, and we can discuss other options.
If you have steady hands, enough patience and some previous experience in disassembling phones (youtube could help a lot), it shouldn't turn out to be quite a big challenge.
I would advise though in some attention taking off the rear cover (it's not difficult, but if you apply too much pressure you might end up bending or breaking it). Same goes with the battery, which is attached to the back of the screen with some adhesive. Use a plastic tool for this, and try to peel it off with a strong and steady hand. Once you do that, it's only a few screws.
I think LG would fix it for $150 so $135 to fix it yourself eh. Unless you want the accomplishment, but I have never ventured into replacing a cracked screen.
Just got off the phone with LG, they said they can't price over the phone, they have to have a tech see the phone and they'll call with a quote. So, 2 weeks without a phone just to get a quote and maybe repaired if I want to spend that kind of money.
I am 80% positive that I have viewed a few post of them charging $150 for screen replacement. You aught to check in the thread "who dropped it" the answer might be there. Its in general. Hard to find with xda app.

Well, turns out once the screen is cracked it cracks easier now. As of now, the phone starts clicking on random things when the screen is touched.
I'm debating to either buy a new one and sell this one, should come out to the same price as buying a replacement screen once the cracked phone is sold.
What would you guys suggest? I can't send it in to LG as I need my phone and replacement screen + front housing is $200 to replace myself or $220 to replace by a professional.
I'm looking at this: http://www.etradesupply.com/lg-nexus-5-lcd-screen-and-digitizer-assembly-with-frame.html
It seems to come with majority of everything and I just need to transfer over the antenna wires, motherboard and battery.
or
http://www.repairsuniverse.com/lg-g...exus 5 Screen with Frame&utm_campaign=LE55ONS
I'll have to transfer over everything, which they have a tutorial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPuCmfhzgbg - which makes me nervous seeing this.

Can't you try the below? Quite easy to dis-assemble the phone, steady hands and proper screw driver + torx driver, use a hairdryer to warm up the glue connecting the battery + LCD to the digitizer
Sorry can't post external links to XDA due to post counter search Ebay for "Frame-LCD-Display-Touch-Digitizer-Screen-for-LG-Google-Nexus-5-D820-D821" results are between $108-$120 ...

How do you diagnose what to replace on your tablet? Is it possible with the tf700t?
Here is the scenario- I travel a lot and kind of pack my backpack tight and I think the extra pressure on the tablet has screwed the right side.. I turned on show touches in developer tools and a touch comes and goes from the right mid side (sometimes it moves) .
I was able tdeal with this for a while but now after my last travel it's made it almost impossible to use the tab. My tablet it is out of warranty, unlocked and rooted so don't know if I could sent it to Asus for repair.
My question is, is it my touchscreen I need to replace or is it another component? Currently I I hold the tablet and apply pressure on the right side (back) I can make the touch go and come. If I turn the screen off it will remove the touch for a bit. if the touch won't go away I try to apply pressure to the back in various spots to it goes away
My understanding is if you can see what's on the screen the display panel is good. If there are touch problems then you MIGHT need a new digitizer. It could also be that in bumping it around and what not that the ribbon cable connecting the digitizer has come loose. Heat sometimes seems to be involved in this happening too. There are a couple threads here about these issues, fixing them and how to go about replacing the digitizer yourself and where people have bought them. It's not a feat for the faint of heart but it can be done at home.

Thanks I'll check it out didn't know if it was the touch screen or digitizer. I'm typing on it right now so seems like touch is just fine.
I suppose I'll open it up and see if a cable is loose. But do you think Asus would accept it for repairs? It's unlocked and rooted.
They woud gladly accept it for repairs... but they would charge you a bundle. Your warranty is void since you unlocked.

Touch screen/digitzer I believe are one in the same.
Sure Asus will fix it. In/out of warranty. But as mentioned, they'll charge you big bucks. My guess to replace the digitizer would be about 300USD. MIGHT be a little less.
If you open it somewhere inside, can't recall position, there is a service switch you should turn off 1st, before you do anything else. That might keep you from frying some component should a short develop somehow. Just remember to turn it back on last before you finish inside.
I recall reading that the ribbon cable is held in place by either glue or double sided tape and the heat aids in its becoming loose and can be part of the problem with the digitizer getting all crazy.
BTW Anyone can feel free to correct or add to this....
Hi all, I'm in the unfortunate situation that I need a new screen for my Pixel 3. Screens are hard to come by but I found KR-NET who sells screens for most phones including Pixel 3.
Any one have any experience with them? Seems like the only option for now but don't want to end up with a subpar display.
Well, I went ahead and bought it. It arrived today and my phone is fully apart. Now I can't figure out how to take the screen itself off! Teardown videos just say it's "securely adhered" (https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Google+Pixel+3+Teardown/113763) or skip over this step entirely (like in this Pixel 3 XL video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ffn4GQpgSU). Any ideas on how to get the old screen off?
Alright, well I just winged it and figured it out. Everything is working now. If anyone is interested, I can post more info. It wasn't terribly difficult but here's my lessons learned. . While I've never taken apart a phone (or anything that wasn't intended to be disassembled/is sealed shut), I'm generally comfortable with assembling electronics. It's not for the fainthearted, do this at your own risk. According to some sites, Pixel 3 has a very low repairability score because of how difficult it is.
Now that I've done it, the only reason a full disassemble is required is to route the display ribbons through the back. If you can find a way to do this, you probably only need to take off the wireless charger and loosen other things a bit.
Make sure the top speaker flex cable is through the motherboard before securing. It's easy to miss, unlike the other flex cables
Get a screen replacement kit that includes precut adhesives for battery and back cover. (Mine didn't)
Take pictures along the way to remember how things go. There are no good tutorials online with this detail
One of the front cameras has a seal that doesn't handle the process well. Mine made it but probably not as good as new
Somehow track which screws go where - beyond just pictures. I ended up with 1 extra screw and extra clip?
PATIENCE! - things break easily. Don't force parts or screws. When prying, do it gently
Be careful with the speaker mesh covers. Not sure if I did mine right but they do not come with any kit that I know of so don't break or bend them or forget to install them before you adhesive the screen on
Make sure to test that everything (phone speaker, bluetooth, bottom speaker, fingerprint, squeeze mechanism, all cameras, charging, flashlight, etc) is working before sealing it up
I managed to break my earpiece speaker somehow so now I'm on the hunt for one of those. At least speakerphone and Bluetooth work!
How's the display?
Does it seem legit, any tint etc?
Was it manufactured by lg?
No issues, can't tell any difference from original. For $80 can't complain vs $280 to get it fixed somewhere. It would be worth a few more $ to get the precut adhesive though.
It's branded as KR NET, seems they make them on their own? Not sure really. Since Google isn't making screens available yet for repairs, this seems fine. Literally would never know.
