All I'm finding with search term xt1042 is stuff about switching the radios, but let's assume I just want to stay on USC and root/rom the phone. Most all the info I see here is for other versions of the Moto G.
What can/can't be used on the XT1042?
What's the recommended root method, and how do I spot compatible ROM's?
So much good info on XDA but sometimes so hard to figure out the stuff that others think is obvious when I jump into a different phone's forum...

Hey guys and experts,
I was browsing through the forums and I came accross the radio thread. I'm extremely confused with it and I'd also like to improve the performance of my 3G and all that. I've been looking around the site but I haven't found anything like an instruction or guide on how to do all that stuff. So I'd like to get some help from you guys if you don't mind.
1) First of all, in regards to version numbers, higher number does not mean it's better right? My radio version is 1.02.25.32 and my 3g reception is spotty and so are my calls sometimes.
2)Another question is, due to the fuze being my first winmo phone ever, when you guys mean security unlock, do you mean the phone being able to use any sim card from any carrier or does it carry a deeper/different meaning. I did get my phone unlocked by calling ATT and asking them for the code in which I provide the IMEI and they gave me a code, the problem is, I'm not sure if it's the same "unlock" that you guys are talking about. (the radio thread said something about having the word security unlocked on the tricolor boot screen, but my phone has the stock ATT rom in it, so I suspect that it might now show)
3) I'm probably inept at searching through forums so I couldn't find any thread that has full instructions on how to change the radios and all that. I'm wondering if anyone can point me to such a thread on how to do that.
I do apologize for such a long post and also the possibility of this question/request being asked already. If you do read through to here, thank you for your time, I'd appreciate any help that is provided.
Higher doesn't necessarily mean better. The poll results give a pretty good indication of overall happiness with any given radio. Based on that, I ditched .32 for .28.
Security unlock is more than SIM unlock. In addition to being sim-free, a security unlocked device can load the radio ROM from another device family.
Check the flashing guides. Essentially, you must load hard-SPL first. That allows you to freely load radios and roms. Always do your research before loading a radio rom though! Radios are the hottest battleground of the spy vs. spy games played by Operators and XDA developers. Operators don't want you changing radios or ROMs and they are always coming up with software that won't allow itself to be changed. If you flash a radio on that has this issue you could be stuck with it. So far, I don't believe any of the radios in the radio thread have issues. You must security unlock before flashing any non Raphael radio however.
Gotcha. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. I'm going to test out a different radio so that maybe I can get better reception. I spend most of my time on edge for some reason.
EDIT: I just noticed that installing HardSPL will clear my PDA of all data. I'm wondering if Sprite Back up is good enough as a backup program or do you suggest something else. I did a bunch of tweaking on my fuze like the PTT remap, camera tweak, network selection, etc etc.
Oh, I did forget to ask what's the favorite back up software for the XDA forum goers. I'm looking for a software that will back up all the tweaks and stuff that I did to the pda before I run HardSPL
*bump to page 1*
1 last bump.
Suggestion on back up softwares please?
I don't think HardSPL clears your phone of all programs and data. That said, I tried to search on that to be sure but couldn't find any confirmation.
Obviously, flashing a ROM will definitely clear all data.
Dunno about flashing a new radio.
There was a particular warning on backing up your data before flashing HardSPL, so I wanted to be on the safe side, the main thing now is that I'd like to find a back up software that will back everything up (registry changes, programs installed, various settings) pretty much everything I did.
I've been searching around for guides and there are some for specific devices, but nothing that seems to apply generically.
I only ask because I know that I could pay cricket to flash it, but I would like to be able to flash my device on a whim. Especially if I build a ROM or try a ROM or the device updates itself and needs to get reflashed, etc.
I don't mind getting my hands pragmatically dirty. Let's do this... LEROY JENKINS!!!

Sorry, my question was a little vague wasn't it. (The things you do in all night diners is really astounding isn't it.)
More specifically, what steps are necessary for flashing a device? Are the only things that are really required a quick change to the APN settings, or do we need to delve deeper into the device and modify firmware settings?
In this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793588) it appears as if they already changed their APN settings and then had to tweak a couple other things to get their MMS working.
Is that all that is necessary (excluding, of course, an ESN/MEID change with cricket)?
When I bought my Rogers SGS2 a few weeks ago, I rooted it right away after finding some posts and software. I used this method:
DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su
But since then, I keep reading about Skyrocket-Easy-Root and SuperOneClickv2.2-ShortFuse, and it seems that there was more than one way to skin a cat.
I'm interested in the functional difference in having used one method versus another. For instance, if I've gone one way, will it change the way I do things going forward. Have I locked myself into one way of doing things, recovery, flashing etc.
Also is there a way to know "how" you rooted your phone, in other words, which method?
Thank you ever so much.
Quick, polite bump!
There's no difference aside from any extras that are installed ie busybox, squlite3, etc....
You aren't locking yourself out of anything by rooting a certain way. It just helps to have different methods for each users level of experience.

I have a Cincinnati Bell HTC One S that I've had for about 18 months. I play games and use apps, very rarely use it for pictures(10 max before I move them to my desktop), and never for music. I started having issues with games, and the game help desk said I needed to install the new andriod update. The phone says it is version 4.1.1, 3.14.422.11 710RD, and when I try to do a manual update, it says there is no update available. I started looking online, rather than through Cincinnati Bell, and I see that a version 4.1.2 version came out for my phone last summer, and many people are even running versions up to 4.4? I also noticed that my phone is set with 6.07GB for Internal Storage, and 9.93GB of Phone Storage.
Would my phone be performing better with an updated version?
Since I don't really use any storage for movies, music, or pictures, is there a way to re-allocate the storage so I have more room for apps?
Since I don't really use any storage for movies, music, or pictures, is there a way to get rid of the apps related to them? (Google Play Books, Music, Newsstand, Google Text-to-Speech Engine, SoundHound)
I am obviously a complete newb, but I follow directions well. Can someone please help me out or direct me to what I'm supposed to read?
I'm really not trying to waste anyone's time or effort, but maybe I didn't give enough information, asked the right questions, or maybe I'm too much a beginner for this site. I'll try to add to what I previously posted.
I searched the web articles about my phone, my carrier, my version, and HTC updates in general. The general conclusion is that, even though there have been updates released by HTC for the One S, my carrier has not tested and/or made the updates available, and, upon further reading, there are many updates available beyond the official updates that people are using successfully and stably. Therefore, I decided it looks like it's up to me to keep my phone functioning for my specific purposes, so I needed to figure out what was the most successfully and stably used upgrade to my phone/carrier's system, and how to go about applying it.
I searched the web for forums about my phone, and the 3 most popular results are xda-developers.com, androidcentral.com(which seems to focus on non-US, and doesn't have a very active community, regardless of expertise), and cyanogenmod.com(which didn't have any referrences to my carrier). I came here because it has the most active community with members who have direct experience with my phone and my carrier, specifically.
I read all the posts here that had 'Cincinnati Bell HTC One S' in the titles or bodies, but they seemed much farther down the decision tree and involved many terms/processes/programs that I am not familiar with.

There is no official update for your Cincinnati Bell HTC One S. Only way to update is getting S-OFF and/or change the CID.
Sold!
Ok, what is S-OFF and CID? Should I do them both, or in a certain order?
I will follow whatever instructions and/or read/research whatever you want.

I just minded you're already running Jellybean, so please check your HBoot version as followed:
Power off the phone --> Press "Vol down + Power" at the same time and your phone will boot into bootloader. You can read different values. If your "HBOOT" is at least 2.15 you can manually install any newer Android versions e.g. 4.4.2

Hi everyone.
Me and the wife have Samsung phones and what I usually do is buy a sim free phones a lot cheaper from different countries which usually comes without the extras like Wi-Fi calling ECT, but what I usually do is flash network stock firmware which gives us what we need.
My problem is that I only know how to flash firmware on Samsung phones and windows phones (which we don't use anymore). Even though samsung are doing well and making very good phones these days I don't want to be stuck buying Samsung just because I don't know how to flash stock on other Android devices. I would like to try a pixel, HTC, Essential phone and ect but I want to be able to buy it cheaper and be able to flash stock firmware.
Samsung seems to have a massive advantage with companies like Sammobile and Odin but I wouldn't know where to start with the other Android devices.
So finally my question (if you put your answer to match the right number be easier to understand)
1. Where do you get stock firmware for other devices (if there different places for each manufacture then please tell me all the place and who covers who)
2. Are there different Odin types of software for each phone company.
3. How do I do it and how hard is it compared to using Odin.
I know there is lots of video and other threads with this type of information but I find posting a new question makes it very personal to my situation and I know the info I get will help my better than reading someone elses thread and working out how their advice given applies to me. At the same time, I will try and make this thread as universal as I can so we can maybe help others in similar situations.
Thanks guys I hope I can learn
