Hey guys,
Great forums here, lots of awesome stuff going on and the development community is kicking!
I recently got rid of my iPhone (couldn't stand Job's arrogance anymore) and decided to go with the cost effective route of MetroPCS. When I found Android phones could be flashed to work with it, I was quite excited. I found a phone and someone to do the flashing on Craigslist (actually a local phone shop that does it).
He flashed my phone and loaded Evil Eris onto it. I wasn't under the impression that if he put this rom on, I was going to have issues, like no voicemail notification or softkey leds. Going into this, I was pretty unaware of all the different rom choices, and the effects they have on the phone, and I still kind of am. So I have a few questions, because I've been reading about Ivans and kind of want to try it out, but want to make sure I've covered all my bases.
1. I am still unaware of the exclusivity or co-dependence that "flashing" a phone and changing a rom have with one another. He flashed my phone to work with Metro, and upload the Evil Eris rom. Main question is - if I wipe and load Ivans, do I lose the ability to use Metro? Or is it simply an issue of loading up my Metro APN (i think thats right) settings once I've loaded the new rom?
2. Nandroid backup - I made one the other day. If I go in, try another rom, and screw something up, I am under the impression that I could restore that backup and my phone be working like I never left it, including MetroPCS settings, correct?
3. Can anyone suggest a good program to backup and restore carrier specific settings, so that if I load a new rom I can quickly port settings over? Does something like this exist?
4. Finally, if all of this has been answered somewhere where I didn't find, feel free to send me to those links!
Thanks in advance, everyone! Looking forward to getting to know my new phone better!
anyone able to help me out? or point me in the right direction?
I also want to make sure I posted this in the right place, not sure if it needs to be in the Eris specific forum.
I really hope you've found help already. But if not, I THINK the app called "APN Backup & Restore" is the app you're looking for.
I'm lost >_<'
Sorry, but I don't know where to start. My friend texted me a link to this forum so I could get help. I've already spent hours, and I still don't know what I should do.
So far:
1.) I was hoping on finding a way to remove all this useless AT&T Crap, HTC Likes, HTC, Blockbuster, etc. Is there a way without rooting my phone
which brings me to...
2.) Is there a way to effectively organize the all apps section?
3.) I noticed that the battery is really low and barely lasts a day. Would underclocking the cpu be possible to save battery life if I root my phone?
4.) My friend said I should root my phone. I've been looking around the past two days about it, but I'm still confused; there's like all these various ROMs. I'm assuming this is similar to the idea of various distros that derive from Ubuntu/Debian? But my main concern is the idea of rooting something itself. I use Ubuntu and what I've learned from forums and using it is that being a superuser for the whole time is a big no-no. I know it's just a phone, but I've heard of phones being hacked so I don't know if rooting is safe... Is it? How does a rooted OS generally work? Is there like a way to not have root access at all the times (like a guest account) and use root via typing in the admin password?
5.) Warranty - So I have 30 days to return the phone if I don't like it (which is unlikely ). Anyway, say something bad happens (e.g. I flash some ROM and I can't figure out how to fix my GPS or something). Is there a way to get it back to a stock, unrooted ROM incase something goes wrong? In other words, if for any reason I want to (and can) return my phone, is there a way to get back to unrooted-unmodified Froyo?
6.) Speaking of flashing, I've read terms about a goldcard, S-Off, and clockwork. The first two has to do with the sim card and making the phone unlocked I think? If so, is it necessary to have these/do these things in order to root a phone? I don't care much about unlocking my phone; I'm stuck on AT&T (I don't pay for the plan; my older bro does). As for clockwork, I think it has to do with recovery of something? Can someone elaborate on this for me
7.) Flashing - I've read about flashing ROM's but I also heard about flashing the radio and it being more, if not very risky. If I want to root my phone, is it necessary to flash the radio?
8.) Kernels - I know kernels have to do with a phone's performance, battery consumption, etc. but I see different kernels being used with different ROM's. Are they interchangeable or are the custom ROM's built around each kernel making it unique?
9.) IF I do decide to root my phone, which custom ROM should I use? I really like the HTC sense so I'm hesitant to change if I lose it.
Sorry, I know this is too a lot. I read the stickies, but there's only two question marks under "Guides | Rooting: (The guides to the basics)." Hope someone can answer these questions
Start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961406
No, you can't remove at&t apps without rooting.
Rooting is fine. You're not personally messing around with system files just casually using your phone. They're modified when you install roms, kernels and radios.
Hi - I'm no developer, just a fan. I've read all the rules, terms, threats about what happens if you don't SEARCH first - guys I've done it all and for a long time. I have been studying up on how to root my MoPhoton 4g since I got it last August. I think I'm finally ready....but now I'm afraid I'm too late. I got involved in that soak test, which installed 2.3.5. Now, if I've searched/read acs and xda correctly (and other less intelligent sites), here's where I am:
There is no way to downgrade from 2.3.5
Shabbypenguin's wonderfully simple and sweet One Root won't do the trick on 2.3.5 (and boy did I try it MANY times). Had correct drives installed, etc...but no go. I assume you guys know what I'm talking about, but I can and will paste what the script read if you need me too. Short story...got all the way to "you should have root"....but I don't.
Currently the only way to do it is with a root method called Torpedo....which I don't know enough about yet but I'm about to get into it...
And finally, even if I get root, I won't have bootloader, again, because of 2.3.5.
Sound about right so far? If so, here's my big question:
If I can ONLY root for now, will I obtain the benefits I am looking for (mainly increasing/unleashing the SPEED I know this phone is capable of, and fixing whatever problem has always caused this phone to flicker it's wifi on and off and on and off constantly all the time, even in the same location....it drives me up the wall! Also, I'd like to get free wireless hotspot too, cause if you're gonna dream, dream big.
Thanks guys
I got a little confused reading your post, so sorry if this isn't the answer you are looking for...
Rooting would help you in a lot of ways, but the full potential of the phone is unlocked with custom roms and kernels...
For wifi on off, go to settings>wireless and network> wifi, and then press menu, select "advanced"...and see "wifi sleep policy" is set to "never"...

Photon root, bootloader, 2.3.5
Thanks for the response. Allow me to clarify:
Yes, I do want to root and install CM 7 or CM9, but if I can't unlock bootloader that's not possible....correct? If so, I'm hoping someone will tell me I'm wrong about one or more of my earlier assumptions (see bulleted list in OP).
Sorry, but I do not know the way around locked bootloaders...my device has an unlocked bootloader, and this makes job fairly simple...
Does you device have a subforum at xda? If so, then ask this over there, and you shall receive specific help there...
Or wait here for someone with more experience with locked bootloaders...
(P.s. look on over at youtube, you may find an answer)

I have tried a few custom roms and then when I reflash back to any of the 3 stock roms floating out there for the GS3 Verizon my Google Play Store remains permanently broken. Alogcat indicates that it is getting back an unexpected response code 400 from google. I suspect this may mean that it fails to update because SSL is broken in some way but I could be wrong.
I have done all the normal things one does to bring back the market such as clearing the data on Google Play and services framework and rebooting, but that has no positive effect. Nor does deleting my account and re-adding it or creating a new account. Also Google+ will say "No Connection" but once I close out of it and reopen it, it will always log in to my account automatically without error. I will say that the error is reminiscent of the kind of error you would expect if your time is wrong, but it is correct. Any help will be appreciated it..

considering that out of all the roms I have tried Play now only works in one of the many roms posted here.. I feel like it is connected.
http://goo.im/devs/invisiblek/i535/roms/cm10.unofficial.nightlies build 20121005 is the only rom I can flash on my device now and having a working Google Play but I absolutely hate this rom. It has bugs, it lacks polish.. yet it also seems as if it screwed up Play in some way on my device... so please install this rom and tell me I should be posting somewhere else.. where everyone only discusses the usual methods of fixing Play and no one takes any real steps to really debug the problem to get to the root of it.

Doesn't matter if you have the issue on every rom it doesn't belong in the development section. Take the real step of posting this in the proper section.

I would have to agree seems like the good place to post it since we are all flashing roms and they bare having this issue... I was pleased to see this here as in have been having this issue on synergy 74 and up and now I see it's others so now all the developers will be aware of what's going on and maybe find a fix

I love how people comment in a thread telling you that you posted in the wrong section, but don't offer up any advice.
I don't know a whole lot about your issue, but instead of flashing a stock rom maybe you could odin back to stock, accept OTA, and start over?
Not sure if that would clear up your issue, but hope I helped...!

Thanks Josh, but yea I have been flashing back to stock via Odin a lot, more times than I can count now! I've been using the HOME_I535VRALF2_I535VZWALF2_618049_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5 image file but Kies says it is the most recent as well so there is no newer OTA to come down. I've also tried LG and HD roms via Odin, but regardless the Google Play Store remains broken. I am positive that I have restored everything back to its original configuration as per multiple guides on the subject. It is extremely frustrating as I have spent countless hours now trying to fix this one issue. I've spent more time researching this issue on google, in the forums and irc chat rooms and speaking with more devs than what those people would care to know about. There is a serious issue here that is being ignored.
I develop iPhone apps, I do IT support, and network infrastructure for a large manufacturer and I always get a great deal of enjoyment figuring things out but something like this, which should be so simple and just work, ticks me off to no end. For me this just creates the case in point why it makes it difficult for me to care much for the Android platform as a whole. It still has a lot of growing up to do before it catches up with iOS. I use a phone to get from point A to point B and I expect a certain baseline level of performance and things to just work. I left the platform 2 years ago and from the outside it looked as though things have been improving, but I can see now that not much has changed in the OS or community and the platform isn't ready for much of anything beyond a tablet for me personally as it is just a no go as a phone OS.
I would really like to figure this out still.. so to the first person who can give me the resolution or help me significantly in some way I will gift $50 to you over paypal.

Well, you don't seem to be flashing a Base ROM using Odin. It being broken like that usually indicates DPI issues, which are carrying across ROMs.
1. Is your phone encrypted? (Do a reset and Erase everything from within, that should fix it) Settings > Backup and Reset > Reset
2. Is the ROM you are flashing using Odin a Base FW?
I had this happen on an old incredible. What it turned out being was that my phone wasn't activated. I don't think that is your problem because it sounds like you use it, but could be a corrupted area of the phone that flashing doesn't touch. I don't think its a ROM because I've flashed them all and my market has always worked.
I would try a couple things to see if either helps. First, Odin back to stock then turn you phone off pull the sim card, boot back up and let it settle, power off put the sim back in and power up. Second, if that doesn't work dial *2767*3855# to repo vision your phone, but this factory resets and people say it erases your internal SD card so back that up. Hope one of those help.
Also if neither of those work, try a new sim card. That seems to fix 90% of peoples problems on this phone.

kintwofan, you may be on to something. I have flashed the 3 base roms for my phone G7, LG, and HD to no avail. I actually use this phone on another carrier and so I have manually programmed this phone myself. So there may be something regarding the activation that is causing this issue.

Sounds like may need a buildprop change. Try changing buildprop to your carrier. Although one of my rezounds is on Tmobile without problems. Using T-mobile APN. S3 should auto add the APN. At least it does with international sim.
Use market enabler then to see if you can tell it your carrier. I'm sure you can Google the apk
You could also still do the reprovision, but I'm sure you'll have to reprogram it.

I assume you're on Verizon so did you try the other suggestion I posted? I used to run synergy with no problem so I would assume something got corrupted on your phone in a segment that isn't flashed.

OTA attempts to activate this phone on the carrier fails, hence the manual programming. I have tried market enabler and and market unlock but they fail to work in the stock roms and the synergyrom. The only rom that has a working Market/Play is http://goo.im/devs/invisiblek/i535/roms/cm10.unofficial.nightlies I specifically used 1005 and 1012 and they both work fine.
I don't know what he does differently but it works for whatever reason.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788443
I just don't really care for the rom, it seems like my reception and wifi has issues on it vs the stock.

Interesting, so the reprovision didn't work? Have you tried just pulling the play store from his gapps? Also, you could try his jellywiz ROM maybe he did the same thing to it were your play works, if you like touchwiz. I guess you could also upload the build.prop from that working ROM and I'll compare it to mine when I get time and see if I notice any major differences.
By the way have you tried Eclipse ROM, its very nice and bug free.
Sent from my S3 running Eclipse 2.1
Still looks probably to be a buildprop vs carrier change issue. CM is built off source and works and the TW roms are built off different carrier bases and don't work. Playstore looks at the buildprop.
I was wondering if anyone had any info on the status of roms for the Behold II. I just got one, used but in very good shape, and I am trying to get it to work better. I am fairly sure these phones were pretty popular, and I can't believe they were (almost) completely ignored. I found a pretty nice clean android 1.6 rom that I threw on it, but it has no vibrate.
Does anyone know of any stable gingerbread roms for this phone? If not, anyone know how to get vibration to work? Is there anyone out there willing to work on this phone at all?
Or can anyone point me in the direction of some information on taking the rom apart and figuring out how to get the vibration working? Basically I need to find out how to take apart a rom, then figure out how to get vibration working properly. It's driving me nuts that the phone doesn't vibrate when I get calls/texts.
Isn't that Donut? *throws up*
Couldn't find any ROMs above 1.6 with some googling. Its also likely that you would not be able to fix the vibrate issue, if the Dev couldn't. If you want to "take the ROM apart," just take the .zip file and unzip it.
But I recommend getting a new phone.

It is indeed Donut. That's why I wanted to try and find a gingerbread rom or figure out how to make my own.
I unzipped the rom and dug around in there. I found some other thread on these forums about vibration and the symlinks and vibrate.ko. I checked in init.rc (on the phone) and found some lines about inserting modules relating to VibeTonez and the module "vtmdrv.ko" but I don't know if it is commented properly or turned on or symlinked or whatever. I see nothing about an actual vibrate.ko or anything.
How do I check my updater-script for the correct symlink?
I found this thread that has given me some interesting information: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946614
and also this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405366
Thanks for the interest! Unfortunately, I cannot just get a new phone. I am basically stuck with this one for the foreseeable future.

No prob. Always interested in the legacy devices.
I wouldn't try to fix the vibrate, the developer himself states it will likely never be fixed (http://androidforums.com/behold-2-all-things-root/54769-port-galaxy-1-6-behold-2-final.html). I didn't read into the thread, but usually some user asks why vibrate doesn't work, dev explains, etc. You don't know if the problem with the ROM is the same as the issues found in the threads you searched.
If you want Gingerbread, it looks like the device is pretty much dead, however you can port CM7 from a similar device. It would be quite a chunk of work though.

Yeah, I have been going over all those threads that have that guy's roms. He made a few of them for this phone, and I am trying to find one that is better. Or the best of them.
I think I may have found a pretty major bug in the one I have, though. I got a call, I didn't want to answer it, and I hit the volume down button to silence the ringer, but it force closed android.phone.com and dropped the call. That wasn't cool.
I am also (kind of half-heartedly) pursuing creating my own rom from scratch. It's quite daunting, but I have a lot of time for the next week or so. My sister is having a complicated pregnancy so I am spending a lot of time at the hospital. There are plenty of guides and tutorials for beginners, so I am reading those and trying to figure things out.
Or I can figure out how to work on the rom this guy made, that would make life much easier.

I wouldn't try to make a ROM from scratch. A better thing to do would be to port. Basically find a ROM made for a phone with similar internals (type of CPU and RAM) and port the ROM. Much easier than making a ROM from scratch which requires knowledge of a few computer languages (mainly java). There are a few porting guides available on the forum.. Lemme find a link

Hey, thanks for your help! It's much appreciated! And believe me, if I could get a new phone I would. This phone is on my parent's plan, and only used for calling and texting family. I can't use data or anything. At this point it's more for the sake of learning about how to build an android operating system than anything else. I just want a nice, stable, useful phone that is better than the old school flip phones (of which I have had quite a few over the years).
Once again no prob. I used a legacy device just last year but it had quite some development so all I had to do was flash Roms lol.
Anyways this is how you compile GB
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183832
And this is how you port. I would port from a similar device like the My touch 3g
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598713

Haha yeah I am in the same boat with my nook. I have been following the devs over in the nook sub-forum for a couple years now. I have had several iterations of gingerbread, a couple of ics, and now a few of jelly bean. I am used to just slamming the rom zip on the sd card and booting into recovery and flashing it over.
For this phone I had to do odin, which was a new experience for me. Went pretty painless, and I figured it out. I prefer the recovery method over odin.
I have one question about the second link, about porting. It says in the first post that if you don't have gb already compiled for your (my)device that guide is useless for you (me). Is that what the first link is for? Compiling specifically for my device? What if my device is not supported at all? Do I just pick a somewhat similar phone, compile, port, make a flashable rom, and put it on the phone and hope it doesn't brick it?
Yep thats what the first link is for. Don't compile and port for a different device, that is a sure way to brick your phone.
Is your device not supported at all? Usually legacy devices are since back then (lol) there weren't a whole ton of Android phones
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I don't know if my device is supported or not. I have not got to that part in the guide yet. I will report back if it is or isn't.
Sorry for not getting back earlier, I've been real busy the past week or two.
I finally got ubuntu set up on a computer, and was following the first guide and ran into a few problems.
First, I wasn't able to install all the required packages. If you want to know what ones they are I wrote them down. Not sure how essential they are in the grand scheme, but they weren't available.
Second, I tried to install java and ran into a problem adding the repos for it. The second one, for src, would not work at all. So I went on sun's or oracle's website and downloaded the linux package and installed it. But apparently it didn't work because all I get after trying to lunch are lots of these:
Code:
/bin/bash: java: command not found
Basically anywhere it tries to use java I get those messages. Eventually it gives up and says I have
Code:
version: /bin/bash: java: command not found
and I should have
Code:
version 1.6
Third, after I issue
Code:
source build/envsetup.sh
I see it includes some devices, like htc passion and samsung crespo4g and samsung crespo. Is this normal?
Fourth, When I do lunch I get five options
Code:
1. generic-eng
2. simulator
3. full_passion-userdebug
4. full_crespo4g-userdebug
5. full_crespo-userdebug
Should I just pick generic-eng?
I will be out of town all week for work, and won't have access to the computer I am doing all this on. For the life of me I cannot get unbuntu to install on my laptop. Never did like ubuntu, always favored fedora.
Anywho, thanks for any suggestions.
