As the title says, this thread is one place for all the reviews of the P20 Pro. So if you find a good review, or have one yourself, add it here.
This is my main review of the Huawei P20 Pro after using it for 6 weeks, now on newer firmware too. I show the differences in the newer firmware along with the photos. There are over 300 photos in my review, plus links to my over 17 articles covering the phone. https://gavinsgadgets.com/2018/05/1...weeks-using-new-firmware-300-camera-showcase/
I’ll add some that I’ve found so far.

That was what I am afraid of, brilliant night shots but not so great at other sceneries. Was so disappointed in my Mate 10 Pro who filtered everything with Huaweis terrible post processing making details disappear and faces looking painted in watercolor and colors nowhere what they look in real life.
Is it possible to turn of all this terrible AI functions ?
I've used it in every way possible with great results. This is the biggest photo gallery from shots taken on the P20 Pro by many people created by Jonathan Morris.

Different opinions are welcomed if constructive. Not everyone can like every phone. It would be boring if we only liked one phone ?
However, the Register review is a poorly written , and more click bait. I didn’t realised it was the same review called out on twitter by one of the key reviewers, Alex Dobie, at Android Central, being of poor content etc.. I think the comment that it lacks micro sd card is a major flaw is daft. Does that mean every iPhone sold, Pixel Xiaomi etc that’s uses only internal storage is flawed. Internal storage is faster and more reliable. However, I do understand some people like a micro sd card and might need one too.

But Gavin, don’t you think it is strange to have SD as option in the P20 Lite but not in the flagship P20 Pro? I think it is as very strange and bad choice from Huawei. If the P20 lite didn’t have it I would not be as silly not to have it on the Pro but for now I think it is plain stupid
No. The lite is nothing close to the Pro other than in name. It's a budget offering only and therefore cheaper pricing is needed.
When you're taking photos and having tons of computational photography internal storage is the best option by miles. Same reason other top end phones do this.

I don’t buy that thinking. People will see the P20 Lite and Pro as the same kind of phone and don’t understand why the cheaper one has SD support and not the expensive one. Already heard lots of people thinking this is stupid. And the SD card is fast enough for most of the camera options so that the internal storage is best by miles is a bad expression for most scenarios. They should have let people decide if they wanna use a SD card or not. Even Samsung is letting people use SD card in the S9 series
Just done my audio review covering the speakers, Bluetooth, and dongle and then compared it against the iPhone X, S9+ and Pixel 2 XL and also tried using some external headphone amp/DACs with the P20 Pro https://gavinsgadgets.com/2018/04/1...iphone-x-samsung-galaxy-s9-google-pixel-2-xl/

The gallery is absolutely impressive.
However what is of interest if these shots were taken as a "point and shoot" or if the pro mode was used. For me, I hardly have time to fiddle around with settings and would prefer to get a good shot with automatic controls ( most of the time )

Well that is truly awesome then.
The only thing stopping me with getting this phone is EMUI. There are so many quirks in terms of notification issues, widget issues etc that is just a pain to deal with on a daily basis.

Well I might be wrong, but in the p20 pro, mate 10, mate 9 and p10 forums, a lot of people have issues with widgets and notifications not appearing etc.
I have personally had the same experience when I had the mate 9 and so I was particularly looking to see if they were resolved. Reading through this forum it didn't seem the case. However you mention otherwise, so I am a bit confused
I have had the Mate 9 and Mate 10 Pro and there were issues.
This is the first version of EMUI that I am happy with. Phone is my main phone and works brilliant.
And I have over 130 apps installed.

Thanks for clarifying that. This certainly is piquing my interest now.
Just in terms of your setup, do you have a custom launcher on it? Also did you have to exclude apps from battery optimization to get notifications consistently ( especially even when the phone is in deep sleep) ?
Thanks again for your help and input

so I'm very disappointed about the so big advertising i saw about this phone on this forum from xda staff and promises about possible agreements between xda and huawei so to have maybe good development when in the end it seems it was just words.. nevertheless in this price range i still think this phone is one of the best if not the best for specs so could maybe get one anyway.
that said my first question is about camera. i tested two huawei phones lately (p8 lite and g8) and found out the former did very bad pictures (especially in low light conditions/inside spaces.. terrible!) while the latter (g8) seems to make very good pictures, also with low light.
do someone knows if the honor 8 makes good pictures in low light conditions/inside spaces in the evening like the g8 maybe? or better? but anyway better than the terrible p8 lite?
another thing. stock fw is pretty good but i miss some features, for example long press volume buttons when screen is off to switch songs (without headphones) and unlink notifications/ringtones volume and change volume steps. do you know if i can achieve all this with xposed for example and gravity box? will these features be compatible on huawei?
last thing, i don't use any gapps/services. in the past i used to create flahsable zips for stock firmwares (sony, Samsung etc) to remove all Google stuff, will this work with huawei as well i suppose? or maybe it will prevent phone to boot? dunno how is huawei linked to google stuff.. and if the Google icon in settings will disappear removing google stuff..
tia for any helps guys!

I believe Honor 8 will impress you in terms of photography. As for your desired features, Xposed modules will most likely grant those. For Google stuff, you won't have problems of you delete the right apps.

Low light camera is actually very good. Samsung GS7 is the best in this area but H8 comes close.
Overall you'll see a huge quality bump.
You can customize button press, yes.
If you root you can take almost every gaps from H8.

I can confirm that it makes good (I would not say great it is for the top Samsung devices) pictores in low light. That is the environment where the second camera comes to handy and makes pictures with a bit more light and less noise. The only thing which you have to keep it mind is that you have to hol the phone still since it does not have OIS.

That's, for me the biggest gripe, the lack of any stabilization, either optical or electronic. I can live without 4K.
i have pretty still hands but my primary need is to take pictures of my baby inside home.. so without that stabilisation thing you think all my pictures will be bad probably? (when baby is moving, so most of the times..)
the huawei gx8 my gf owns has OIS... and the honor 8 doesn't.. how is that possible? gx8 is older and wasn't even a flagship..!! her gx8 indeed takes nice pictures also inside home in the evening or outside with low light.. so is that supposed to take better pictures than the honor8..? my god..

You misunderstood me
OIS comes handy when you take a video or a >1/30 picture. In normal light conditions it actually does not have any affect on the picture quality. Usually when there is less light (actually during night) the camera software tries to compensate with taking the picture longer. That is when you can enjoy the benefits of the OIS. But if you hold your phone still there is no much a difference between a camera with OIS and without it only if you zoom in. And even with the dual camera you can take better pictures (the second camera catches more light)
So that is it. And the gx8 could have the OIS because it was a single camera. For two camera you have to create an OIS which moves the two camera simultaneously. The Huawei could just finish the development at the Mate 9.

thanks chief! so i guess I'll experience it myself soon, am probably ordering one honor 8 today as my mi5 is gonna take ages to get back after repair in China.. and i need a replacement phone soon.
then if it takes better pictures than the mi5 and if development will arrive, will keep it, otherwise will sell it when i get my mi5 back

Weeks back, Wired chatted with the Imaging Director of OnePlus Simon Liu who said:
"I think we have a shot at competing with the first tier phones, I don’t think we can beat them, but the imaging world is always subjective."

When corporations do not have anything soild to justify in a particular subject matter, they generally use such terms. Especially, OnePlus has been hyping bigtime in anything they are good at(take "speed" as just one example) from the very beginning. What I've understood throughout years from OnePlus is they maintain a low profile in that particular aspect where they trail behind competition by quite a margin.
As for P3XL & P30Pro both are superbly excellent in their own terms with both having some minor cavities here and there, but OnePlus would be nowhere near either of them....I will be very happy if what I am guessing now turns out to be wrong later....!!!
So guys u think it's worth now that u saw some reviews?

Care about way better batterylife and camera and can live with EMUI , go for P30Pro.
Need speed ,smoothness and again speed ornamented by polished OxygenOS but do not care much about cameras and not so great batterylife(i.e. it's good, not amongst the chart toppers) then choose OP7Pro.
*I won't talk about DxOMark score of 111 given to OP7Pro and its underlined individual scores, reviewers don't agree with the idea of it having very good cameras.
*I can go on and on based on my own opinion, research and my hands-on experience but feeling lazy to write an essay

The future with Huawei concerning google services is not bright :
https://www.anandtech.com/show/14361/google-to-suspend-some-business-with-huawei-after-us-blacklist
I know a lot of people (including myself) are bitter about how the updates to our device have been. As much as i want to move away from Huawei I can't help, but lean towards getting the P40 Pro. Mainly towards the camera aspect as I'm a photographer and like having what's essentially a pro camera in my pocket. So what are people's thoughts on the phone? Let's keep the whole Google and Huawei controversy out of the discussion please as we all know how stupid it is, but there are work arounds in the P40 Pro forums so it's nothing that really worries me.
I moved from p30 Pro to P40 pro - The main camera on par with better shots in the dark wors night mode?
Zoom is a lot better, but far from other cameras
Wide 18mm vs 16mm??? Bad move difference with main camera is not so big now and definitely far from Samsung's 13mm.
AI changed a lot especially in wide camera - pictures are not so punchy like P30's
Video is a lot better all over it but the zoom is not very good
Overall good improvement but not overwhelming.

Yes, Google is Possible on the P40pro, but i know this from my Kindle Fire Tablet, i am not really happy with it. (Blocker for me)
Updates: Another Blocker for me.
Bootloader: Another Blocker. (is essential after official Updates for me)
Besides that i am really happy with the Quality of my P20Pro, and i am sad about the above points... and i am sure the P40pro makes phantastic pictures.
https://www.dxomark.com/huawei-p40-front-camera-review/
i also want my next camera with 2 front cameras, i like to take selfies
I also use zoom a lot.
So my next camera will be something like the p40pro , but no more huawei i am afraid.
As good as Huawei hardware is, there is no way I'm ever buying a Huawei phone again unless they roll back their locked bootloader policy. Which they won't.

I'd like to know as of you guys using this phone for months, Are the problems are solved? Are there any bugs still persist?
For users that reports having bugs for notifications are really the one that doesnt really knows how to set up a Xiaomi phone. I have been using a week already and I get all my notifications right away.

I was using a Vivo nex 3s for the pass 2 years, which served me very good but the camera department and the lackluster mono speaker just a nono for a flagships anymore. The 12s ultra I got from aliexpress with global rom, which i think is there inside China only hacked rom and the first thing I did was to flash EU firmware and set it up as a regular global xiaomi phone. To me the screen refresh rate, camera , sound and voice is a major step up from what I was using. For a flagship around 1k, this is a wonderful best buy that I won't probably run into someone with the same phone around my area.

Accessibility services sometimes "stop working" and need to be restarted, that's about the only issue I've run into.
I'm just a casual photo taker, however so far I have found that the consistency in cameral quality was better with the mi ultra 11
Hi, I'm not sure if this is the correct thread for this. But I am wondering if your device's RAW file format for photos does not exceed or is normally 10Mb and below?
I normally post-process my shots and purchased this phone mainly because of its camera. However, I am blown by how low the margin I can edit the images on this device. I have an old mi10 pro, and a ROG6 device, and the RAW photos I'm getting out of those devices are above 50MB. The photos I shot out of this device are normally highly saturated even after turning of lica vivid. so my option is to post-process.
Is this something that can be resolved via software update or is this a hardware limitation? TIA!
So let me ask you one more question about camera. I have seen the dozens of video on youtube about camera. Is 12s ultra's camera really competeble with Iphone 13 or 14 series?

So let me ask you one more question about camera. I have seen the dozens of video on youtube about camera. Is 12s ultra's camera really competeble with Iphone 13 or 14 series?

The iPhone gives the most natural looking, clean picture in my experience. android devices tend to go more into "beautification" hence over saturation, over exposed, etc photos. to fix this, you can shoot with raw format and then post process.
but yeah, it all depends with the person looking at the picture.
going back to my question about RAW photos with this phone . this is the first time i ever encountered a device with a very low RAW image quality. the standard photos is more clear, you can basically do nothing with its raw image.
I'm using thor 13.0.1.1 rom, i just want to check with others if they are having the same issue. or will changing rom fix this?
is it just me or is there no way to turn off the alarm when the alarm clock goes off using the native miui clock app? I even set the volume buttons to dismiss the alarm but nothing. Have to reboot phone to turn off alarm
i'll just download the google clock app
Hey guys,
I have just ordered myself the HONOR Magic Vs (Live in the UK) so I'll be able to do some comparison between the two devices.
Just from the spec sheets, they do look quite similar with the Thinness aspect going to the Mix Fold 2 and the Battery size going to the Magic Vs...
The biggest plus of the Magic Vs is the "Global" factor. It has full Google support, and no Chinese bloatware (which is a little strange for a Huawei... aahhh sorry HONOR device )
For more specific impressions, after I receive it. Should only take a couple of days (I hope) It is a local UK delivery after all...
Another thing to consider is the price! Currently, it is "only" £1199 with the £200 discount promo code they give you when you register at the hihonor.com website. The standard price after 25.05 will be £1399 or 1599 Euro in some EU countries...
If you would like to know anything specific, just ask. I'll answer all questions when I get it.

I thought about buying the Honor Magic Vs or Tecno Phantom V Fold. But the Honor inner screen is max 90Hz and has a camera hole. Tecno is not really known yet.
So i bought the Xiaomi Fold 2 in sale (€1000), unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. I made it more global with Magisk modules.
Before the Xiaomi Fold 2 i had the Vivo X Fold. It has great camera's, loved the two in-display fingerprint readers and mute switch. But thinks like Android Auto didn't work and Vivo doesn't want you to unlock the bootloader.
I skip the Oppo Find N2 and maybe also the Google Pixel Fold because i don't like it in size.
Still curious what you think about the Honor Magic Vs.
Since you asked it here on XDA forum, of course I will recommend Xiaomi devices over Huawei/Honor ones. I will never take a device with non-unlockable bootloader into account!
I have both.
TBH I prefer the Xiaomi. Even though the Honor magic vs has full GMS /Android auto so you dont need to root, it lacks basics like wifi calling/volte
If it didn't have the internal selfie camera, I might have been more inclined. This is one of the deciding factors for the Mix Fold 2 too. Completely un-interrupted inner screen.

Cameras are 50MP Main, 6MP Telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and 50MP Wide angle. Should be able to produce quite reasonable results.

Yeah, the camera hole can be annoying but all other foldables I've owned had it (except the Mix Fold 2) that I'm used to it. If the software can be made to ignore it, I'll be reasonably happy...
Hey guys,
I've been playing for a while with the Magic Vs and here are some initial thoughts of mine:
1. Everything just works! Global ROM is a blessing that you can only fully appreciate after you had several years of Chinese ROMs on Devices not made for Global use. Even some apps look a little different than the versions I have in the Mix Fold 2. All google services are happily running, Android Auto is integrated into the software.
The only thing that makes me miss Root a little bit is AdAway. It still works but with Root it works better. All My banking apps work flawlessly, Fingerprint is not iffy with them (have an issue with it in the Lloyds Banking App on the Mix Fold 2)
2. Hardware and build quality wise it is quite nice. It feels as good as the Mix Fold 2. The camera hole on the internal screen is not that bad although I know some people will hate it. Battery life seems better for now but it is too early for that. I'll have to use it at least for a week to give you more accurate notes on that.
The sound is on par and maybe a little bit better sounding... Most probable because there is a little bit more space inside for better speaker chambers... Don't know... A lot nicer rind and Alarm melodies BTW
On that note, the device does not feel any thicker than the Mix Fold 2. Both screens are a couple of mm smaller but the difference is negligible...
3. No notification issues so far... The is one strange thing that all app notifications are not enabled by default but the first time you start the app, it will ask for all needed permissions like in a normal phone for the Global market.
Google Assistant is fully integrated and working. "Hey Google" works even on a locked phone.
The always-on display shows all notifications. NetFlix is fully supported with HDR10...
Basically, it shows what the Mix Fold 2 could have been if it had proper Global software.
One more interesting thing I found just now is that due to some Honor... Magic... the Gboard keyboard switches from a normal one to the split type the moment you go to the big screen... and stays like that in both portrait and landscape... Miracle
I'm doubtful to buy the Honor Magic vs. The 12GB/512GB global model now only costs €1005 at pdaplaza, but i've now got pretty much everything working on my Xiaomi Mix Fold 2. Choices.
