Chromecast devices showing intermittently? - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Anyone else having issues with Chromecast devices showing up intermittently in apps? It seems some days devices do not show up unless I fully reboot my phone. I know this wasn't the case always, so I'm assuming it had to be one of the last few months updates. Curious if anyone else is experiencing the same.

Same has been happening to me as well. Very annoying.

Same here, sometimes I can get them to show up again by toggling WiFi, other times I have to do a full reboot. I haven't dug into it enough to figure out why or if there's something I can do to fix it.

This was an issue a couple of months ago but was fixed with Google Play Services version 11.9.75. See this forum

Double checked my services and they are up to date. Super annoying bug.

[Q] Data just stops but stays connected.

This has been driving me crazy lately. It's most noticeable if I'm watching any kind of video or tethering with PDAnet. I'll be browsing or watching videos then suddenly the data just stops, but it still shows me connected to 4G with 4 bars of signal. The only way I can get the data back is cycling airplane mode.
Has this happened to anyone else and is there any way I can fix it? I'm running Humble 1.62 with EP1W radios and using PDAnet 3.0 to tether.

i'm running gummy 2.1. 1.9RC up until yesterday. I've noticed for the past month that this has been happening. Talked to Verizon, they ask me to confirm that settings were well, set. reboot and watched it happen again. they confirmed that its an existing problem and they acknowledge it with all samsung products. they said they can do nothing about it as long as their is a known fix (reboot system or shut down data and start it up). They did say a new update is coming out very shortly which specifically fixes this from samsung.

Ill try to let you down easily. Thats a bunch of BULLISH! I called verizon and got the same line. Also those aren't known fixes. They are called work arounds.
I called samsung mobile US and was told they arnt aware of any issues with the samsung charge. They also took down my device/contact info and said they would be in touch! The only software update we MIGHT see soon is GB. As we all know, the issues are still present in the leaked GB build.
As a former fascinate owner I went thru this merry go round before. Verizon blames Samsung, Samsung says there is no issue. Verizon finally admits it and offers an upgrade. Thats the pattern that will play out here.
Just so everyone knows VZW is still replacing Fascinate s with Droid charges. The issues still exist!

Yep, this happens to me all the time. Interestingly, my data dropouts are always this way (4G icon still showing), not the usual way where people drop down to 3G/1X or fail to show the 4G icon.
Only happens when I'm streaming Pandora.

If you guys are tethering this WILL happen. It happens to me if I download a huge file or stream HD videos. I have to restart the phone and then it works again.
There are multiple data connectivity issues with the Droid Charge. I have spoken to many different techs at Verizon, some of them claim it is a known issue and that they are aware and a software update is "coming soon" I have had techs tell me it was announced on 10/19, i have also had techs tell me early november. However I had more techs, including several at Samsung, tell there is no known issue, and no upcoming software fix. Please see this other thread at XDA, and all the issues that people are having. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309271

[Q] Moto G rebooting

My wifes Moto G occaisionally crashes and reboots. It hasnt happened very often but I would like to know if it is happening to anyone else and if they know the cause? Maybe it's a bug that will be sorted with a future software upgrade?
The same is happening to me right now, I'm running 4.3. Sometimes it becomes very annoying; I already contacted Motorola through, they're supposed to call me later today...
I hope that KitKat solves this issue because I don't want to root yet.

Ah so it's not just us then. I hope that an update will cure it as I doubt that my wife would let me root her phone. Will be interesing to see what Motorola say.

Same issue here. Got the device, (US GSM) on Dec. 14th, and had it happen a couple of times. I didn't think anything of it, because this phone is for my son, and I was trying out parental control stuff on it. I wrapped it, and it sat under the tree till the 25th, which is when I updated it to 4.4, and the crashing has gotten worse. I get random app crashes, and more reboots now than ever. I cleared the partition cache, which didn't work. I am going to try a factory wipe and see if that fixes it, but I honestly doubt it. Moto chat told me to call in the morning to talk to a level 2 tech.
So, there seem to be a few of us, but I didn't see anything on their support forums....

So far I've had a single instant reboot in the camera app. Hope it doesn't get worse.
The phone is still rebooting sometimes. Is there any way I can check why it is happening like something that will create an error log? Or does anyone have any tips for stopping it happening? It is a very minor nuisance at the moment but I'm afraid it might get worse. Especially if it is a problem with the hardware rather than the software.
I have a UK moto g and it hasn't rebooted on me yet the past week I have had it

I've got the International 8 GB version from Koodo and it hasn't rebooted since I started using it full time on Dec 28. It remains powered up 24/7.
Often these reboots and crashes are user app related, it may be a good idea to data factory reset the phone and see if the issue remains.
Undervolting the cpu may cause these issues too if you undervolt too much.
I have 120 apps installed and had no crash/reboot so far in the 3 weeks i had the phone.
I have same trouble. My device is crashing and rebooting sometimes at day. Is there any solution??
Moto g purchased in mexico, telcel.
Guys, return it to your phone dealer if you can. Waiting for a fix(that may or may not come) will just increase your pain. If the service center spots the restart, they should definitely repair/replace your phone.

Yes it could be but I think it's most likely Android OS or Motorola's own certain app that's causing this. My device resets so frequently that's it become impossible to use, unbelievably it reboots every 5-10min, even when I leave the phone on standby I see it rebooting it self.
It's no just specific app that I use, it has rebooted while I'm browsing (Google Chrome), in Gallery app, on Play Store and also when I was transferring images from pc to the device!
Motorola Chat support are useless, they just game me links to Moto UK Support contact, that's it. Not much of advice.
So I will be taking it back to Phone4u store and possibly get it replaced if they can.
Kit kat seems to have fixed problem.

My wifes phone seemed to be getting worse. It rebooted four times the day before yesterday. It always seemed to be worst when we were travelling.
Yesterday morning the Kit Kat update became available. The phone hasn't rebooted since. Hope I'm not speaking too soon but fingers crossed it seems to be fixed.
We got 2 Moto G's in our family (one for me, one for my father), both ordered from Amazon.de as 8gb version (XT1032)
I haven't seen any reboots on one of these devices. They both got updated to 4.4.2 yesterday and also no crashes.
Has anyone found out what is causing the crashes? Is it maybe even a hardware failure?

If the Kit kat upgrade has cured the problem on my wifes phone then it must have been software related. Possibly an app I had downloaded was causing it. It's worth pointing out as well that most people didn't seem to have this issue.
BTW I spoke to Motorola chat a few days ago using the help app. on the phone. They told me it was probably an app I had downloaded causing it and a factory reset would sort it. Installing the upgrade seems to have done the same thing though.
Happy to hear it's not something hardware related.
I even had reboots with my nexus 5, 4 on random basis (not often). Must be some sort of app I've had installed on all my devices
I received mine in december (from Amazon [Retail.FR]) and experienced some crashes (almost every day).
I installed KitKat on it and did two factor resets to be sure it was not software related issues. Since then, a week ago, I experienced a crash every day and half (screenshot). Crash happened without any reason or specific context.
My serial number is: TA8900B6##
I decided to return my Moto G to Amazon and buy a new one.
I'm experiencing the same and I decided to try to run a constant logcat in the background to see what's going on. Also is there any way to have a constant recording with dmesg? I'm no linux commands expert.
For logcat (in terminal emulator) I used logcat > sdcard/logcat.txt which is growing in size as far as I can see. Hopefully this brings some news.
Good luck everyone.
Cheers

[Q] What's up with the N5?

I'm not sure if people are just really downplaying the bugs their experiencing, or maybe Canada just got a big batch of bad phones but it seems nobody online is having the problems me and a few friends are having with our phones. When 5.0 first arrived I was shocked to find I experienced none of the bugs that everyone was complaining about, 2 weeks later and my phone in unusable. A factory reset seems to clean things up but within another week my phone will become unusable again. I thought maybe my phone had broken until I spoke to some friends and found out that multiple (5+) are having the exact same issues. So my question is what's going on with the n5? How is yours working? I'm extremely disappointed this time around after the great experience I had with the galaxy nexus and n4 and would even say I was a nexus fanboy. After having the n5 since launch I have decided that I will no longer be buying nexus phones, as I have has nothing but problems with the 2 n5s I have owned.
A quick list of some of the bugs I've been experiencing are:
Terrible Battery
Immense lag / lack of response in general.
Facebook Messenger chat heads seem to close themselves about 75% of the time.
Getting the keyboard to come up is a game of hit and miss.
The Wallpaper changes itself to black (my indicator things are about to get crazy)
Data/WiFi often just stop working, while icons in the status bar appear normal
About 1 in every 4 notifications I get fails to actually send a notification.
I get a constant "attempting to reconnect in x seconds" while connected to my moto 360.
My navbar/status bar often disappear.
And the annoying "bug report captured" bug that has been persistent since I got the phone.
I've had these problems on stock 5.0, 5.0.1 as well as all custom Roms up to 5.0.2
I've even tried going back to KK, while greatly improved, I still experience much of the same problems.
Does anyone else have these or similar problems? Has anyone found anything that runs stable? Or is it just time I move on and get myself an HTC?
Using my N5 in germany and it's the best phone I've ever held in my hands Running CM12 (based on Lollipop) for now. Have also been using stock Lollipop for a few months. Both run extremely stable. To be honest: I never heard about your issues. I'm not that big of a fanboy. Never owned a Nexus device before, but I guess I'll never move away from Nexus
Just my honest opinion about the device
By the way: I've got a moto 360, too. And the connection is great - up to 10 meters at least and no random disconnects
I have zero issues with mine, but I'm on stock 4.4.4 so that may have something to do with it. I'm not a fan of Lollipop at all. Too many bugs, and I don't like the look of it.
After one year with my Nexus 5, running stock no root, never a problem. I'm a former owner of HTC flagships phones, never a problem with them.

Using Stock 5.0.1 rooted and with ElementalX kernel is good for me and have been using that setup for over a month now. No issues like what you're describing at all. :S
No problems here like that. Bug report issue is normally a poorly fitting case
Hmm... So it seems that the only people that are having these bugs live in my area... Do you think its possible we all got a bad batch of n5s at the rogers store here?
Edit: everyone experiencing these issues has bought their phones from rogers stores here in my city.

Yeah the devices purchased at the play store seem to be fine now. At first, me personally, I had tons of bugs at release. But those issues have been fixed with updates. Mainly concerning the signal and camera speed.
Thread cleaned.
If you think a report is breaking the rules or shouldn't be there for any other reason please report it and move on, antagonizing them adds nothing to the forum but makes our job harder. Thanks, Tijmen.
No issues here besides the occasional Mobile Radio active wakelock, which I did also see occasionally on KK. I did have some memory leak issues on 5.0.0 but either 5.0.1 fixed it or me removing some 3rd party background services did.

Rebooting is normally my go-to solution for problems but it doesn't seem to help these bugs. I installed CM Security and it constantly warns me about my CPU usage/RAM and battery Temperature. The culprit almost always seems to be the Facebook app (sometimes using 250+ mb of RAM just for background services) Could this be a bug with the Facebook app making my phone perform poorly... Does anyone know of any solid alternatives to the official Facebook app?

Fast for Facebook I'd a good alternative
I've been without issues since the factory images were first released, running CM12 CAF builds without issues (besides cm12 bugs)
So call me crazy but I deleted the Facebook and Messenger apps about 6 hours ago and have had 0 problems since... I'm using the official Facebook "Lite" apk I found online and while it is very ugly, things are running much smoother, just hoping that maybe this will solve the bugs I've been experiencing and I'll be able to help my friends get there phones back to a usable state.

I know it's really late in the game now, but have you tried starting in safe mode to see if you have the same issues? It could be an app causing all the grief.

Random reboots

My pixel had decided it's going to randomly freeze and reboot itself
It does it a few times a day and doesn't seem to matter what apps are running
Is there anyway of logging the reboots without root to find the cause?

Same thing happening to me here too.
What I would do is start from scratch, install factory image, don't install any apps, use for a day to test, then install your apps one by one to find the culprit.
If still rebooting without any apps installed, it might be time for a rma

Has there been any resolution to this? My Pixel has been randomly rebooting, too. Already tried troubleshooting with Google tech support, tried Safe Mode (did it there, too), and factory reset and cache wipe.
It still happens. And when I say random, I mean random. Sometimes it reboots overnight, sometimes in my pocket, sometimes as I'm using the phone (it'll freeze in some cases too before it reboots). There's no obvious indication of what's causing it.
Has there been any light shed on this problem? Any clue as to whether it's software or hardware related?
Some days it doesn't, others it'll do it 5times. I've not had any luck fixing it which is annoying because it awesome except for that

Yeah, there really is no rhyme or reason to the way it reboots, making it even harder to diagnose.
Rebooted again while it was just sitting on my table. No rhyme or reason to this bug.
I've had my 5" Pixel since launch. Google Store device, 32GB, never unlocked the boot loader.
I had a few random reboots, but never actually saw it happen. I'd go to use my phone and see the pattern unlock screen you get on first use after restart.
I have not had it occur since the January OTA.

Same here. Sometimes I'll go to my phone wanting to use it, try my finger to unlock, and it'll prompt me to input my pattern because it's required after a reboot. Clearly, rebooting by itself.
It's frustrating because there's no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes it'll happen multiple times a day, sometimes it won't happen for a couple of days.
At first, I thought the Jan update fixed it too because it didn't occur for a while after the update, but then it reared its ugly head again. I've already tested it in Safe Mode, did a factory reset, and the rebooting still persisted.
If you simply research this on the web, many others are having this issue. And it's even been reported a few times by Android sites/blogs. Google needs to get on top of this. At the very least, they should confirm it's a software issue and not a hardware issue.

Happens at random but only when I'm using Chrome or when my Pixel has been sitting on my nightstand charging.
I've had the phone since launch with no issues. My random reboots just started yesterday and it's happened 5 times in the past 12 hours. Glad I'm not the only one with the problem.

Going to try and get a replacement this is a joke, fully wiped and flashed and still does it

Mine hasn't really been "rebooting"... It's actually just been suddenly shutting completely off for no reason. It will be fine for a few days, then the next fee days it will simply abruptly shut off for no reason... Battery levels don't seem to make a difference.. Weird.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
For me it seems that the reason lies in Bluetooth or just in the BT stack. If I deactivate bluetooth it works fine through the day. But I need bluetooth so I started BT again and the Pixel XL 128GB crashes sometimes 10 Times a day, but as I checked BT was automaticly deactivated after these first reboots. I seemed. The Pixel stopped rebooting as I activated BT and deactivated it myself.
And now? How long do we have to wait. I don´t think it´s a hardware issue.
So, I have this issue but it became (very) apparent only after the OTA Oreo. First two weeks were fine (and subsequently first two weeks after a factory reset I've done), but then it slowly starts doing this after those 2 weeks. Freezes then reboots. At first it's 1-2 a day, now it's like 12-20. Ridiculous. There's a buganiser thread for this issue and Google is aware of it. Most of the bug reports have this in them:
Code:
Sense Key : Hardware Error [current]
which Google rep says is a hardware issue. I also have an access to a Google's internal buganiser thread on this issue (i'm a vendor) and they refer to this being a Toshiba's memory issue. Not sure though why this started happening only after the Oreo update. Also people who flash Nougat report no issues as well. Another funny thing is that there's at least two users with Pixel (XL) 2 who suffer from it. Anyway, I'll be giving it back to my carrier over the weekend (glad we have 2 year warrant here in UK) even though I'm pretty sure I'll get a refurb with a similar problem after two wasted weeks of wait.
Flash nougat rom and see does this problem occur or not? If not then us nougat for a while then again update to oreo

Pixel 3 sensors not working

Within the last week the sensors on my Google Pixel 3 seemed to have quit working. I've been googling and it seems a lot of people have had this issue for since the Android 10 rollout, however most of the stuff I find is from September or October. I found a thread on this site where it was stated by Google that a fix would be rolled out in October. I cannot remember when I updated to Android 10 but it was well before this issue started and I've been on the December patch update for a while. It may have been the December update that screwed it up but honestly I can't say for sure when I did the December update.
I've done a few hard resets and the most recent one I did not restore from a backup and I had all working sensors, except proximity and light, until some time today they all quit working again.
Those that were having issues back in the fall, have they been resolved? Any one else experience issues since December update? Google tech support seems to have no ideas.
This link is to the XL thread but the issue and fix is the same. You will need a copy of the folder from a plain 3, don't use the XL folders in the thread. I would hook you up but I have the XL.

So right now the only options are to root my phone or wait for Google to fix it? I've not rooted a phone before and am a little apprehensive to do so.
my sensors works sometimes, but i note that every time the sensors don't work there's an update in the Google Play System that reverse from November to September

If you never rooted before then I do not think that thread is your problem. The problem in that thread is from using TWRP which a lot of people that root use. So I doubt you have used it.
Just to update.. this morning I checked the sensors for some reason and found them all showing "good" in the Sensor Test app. Ran some tests and sure enough it appears all sensors are working and active edge is as well.
Over night the phone auto updated some apps including Google Drive, Maps, Chrome, and Android System WebView, as well as a couple third party apps. I'm guessing it was one of the Google apps causing the issue, because when I factory reset last time the only app I downloaded was the sensor test and they were not working at that time either.
Just figured I'd share an update in case anyone else has issues and stumbles upon this thread.
No not resolved at all. Pixel 3 dead sensors issue started with the Oct '19 Android 10 system update and haven't worked since. 3 monthly system updates later and nothing resolved. Google hasn't helped at all if this continues this will be my first and last Pixel phone for sure.
my sensors works again, i just turn off the Bluetooth connection and restart the device and the sensors works
