Random reboots - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

My pixel had decided it's going to randomly freeze and reboot itself
It does it a few times a day and doesn't seem to matter what apps are running
Is there anyway of logging the reboots without root to find the cause?

Same thing happening to me here too.

What I would do is start from scratch, install factory image, don't install any apps, use for a day to test, then install your apps one by one to find the culprit.
If still rebooting without any apps installed, it might be time for a rma

I used that Google support and came down to putting the phone I to safe mode for 24 hours to see but some days it does it a few times and other days it's fine

Has there been any resolution to this? My Pixel has been randomly rebooting, too. Already tried troubleshooting with Google tech support, tried Safe Mode (did it there, too), and factory reset and cache wipe.
It still happens. And when I say random, I mean random. Sometimes it reboots overnight, sometimes in my pocket, sometimes as I'm using the phone (it'll freeze in some cases too before it reboots). There's no obvious indication of what's causing it.
Has there been any light shed on this problem? Any clue as to whether it's software or hardware related?

Some days it doesn't, others it'll do it 5times. I've not had any luck fixing it which is annoying because it awesome except for that
Google aren't very helpful either, they refused to help because I got my phone through carphonewarehouse lol

Yeah, there really is no rhyme or reason to the way it reboots, making it even harder to diagnose.

Rebooted again while it was just sitting on my table. No rhyme or reason to this bug.

I've had my 5" Pixel since launch. Google Store device, 32GB, never unlocked the boot loader.
I had a few random reboots, but never actually saw it happen. I'd go to use my phone and see the pattern unlock screen you get on first use after restart.
I have not had it occur since the January OTA.

Same here. Sometimes I'll go to my phone wanting to use it, try my finger to unlock, and it'll prompt me to input my pattern because it's required after a reboot. Clearly, rebooting by itself.
It's frustrating because there's no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes it'll happen multiple times a day, sometimes it won't happen for a couple of days.
At first, I thought the Jan update fixed it too because it didn't occur for a while after the update, but then it reared its ugly head again. I've already tested it in Safe Mode, did a factory reset, and the rebooting still persisted.
If you simply research this on the web, many others are having this issue. And it's even been reported a few times by Android sites/blogs. Google needs to get on top of this. At the very least, they should confirm it's a software issue and not a hardware issue.

Just a few links of people online reporting this problem:

Happens at random but only when I'm using Chrome or when my Pixel has been sitting on my nightstand charging.

I've had the phone since launch with no issues. My random reboots just started yesterday and it's happened 5 times in the past 12 hours. Glad I'm not the only one with the problem.

im thinking this is a hardware issue, im pretty annoyed if it is! i get it like 6 times a day or nothing for a while, makes no difference what im doing or apps being used

Going to try and get a replacement this is a joke, fully wiped and flashed and still does it

Mine hasn't really been "rebooting"... It's actually just been suddenly shutting completely off for no reason. It will be fine for a few days, then the next fee days it will simply abruptly shut off for no reason... Battery levels don't seem to make a difference.. Weird.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

For me it seems that the reason lies in Bluetooth or just in the BT stack. If I deactivate bluetooth it works fine through the day. But I need bluetooth so I started BT again and the Pixel XL 128GB crashes sometimes 10 Times a day, but as I checked BT was automaticly deactivated after these first reboots. I seemed. The Pixel stopped rebooting as I activated BT and deactivated it myself.
And now? How long do we have to wait. I don´t think it´s a hardware issue.

So, I have this issue but it became (very) apparent only after the OTA Oreo. First two weeks were fine (and subsequently first two weeks after a factory reset I've done), but then it slowly starts doing this after those 2 weeks. Freezes then reboots. At first it's 1-2 a day, now it's like 12-20. Ridiculous. There's a buganiser thread for this issue and Google is aware of it. Most of the bug reports have this in them:
Code:
Sense Key : Hardware Error [current]
which Google rep says is a hardware issue. I also have an access to a Google's internal buganiser thread on this issue (i'm a vendor) and they refer to this being a Toshiba's memory issue. Not sure though why this started happening only after the Oreo update. Also people who flash Nougat report no issues as well. Another funny thing is that there's at least two users with Pixel (XL) 2 who suffer from it. Anyway, I'll be giving it back to my carrier over the weekend (glad we have 2 year warrant here in UK) even though I'm pretty sure I'll get a refurb with a similar problem after two wasted weeks of wait.

Flash nougat rom and see does this problem occur or not? If not then us nougat for a while then again update to oreo

How many of us are getting reboots

I know theres a poll on issues etc and rebooting is mentioned, but I feel it was too early to poll and people could have voted and had a reboot after...
So question is..... has your phone rebooted? Or just fine?
Also if you could mention how long you had it that would be great....
I just want to know exactly who is having reboots and who hasn't..
Not once on its own.

LOTS of reboots
I have had about 20 in two weeks. I am CURRENTLY getting CONTINUOUS reboots.
It had the LG logo and thinking bar, underneath it said "System checking". Now it has rebooted non-stop (6 times so far as I'm typing).
New phone should arrive on my doorstep within the next hour or so... fingers crossed.
once that I know of. No idea why. It just rebooted while on my desk idle.
In the one week I had the phone (preroot), never. Even after rooting it, never.
Haven't had any issues with mine.
Had 3 reboots in 5 days on my old phone. Nothing yet on new one so far. It has been 3 days. I noticed my old phone was alot hotter than this one. Possibly a hardware issue after all.
Guys, try to turn off gps, I did that and I have 0 reboot and 0 shut down today, I had a lot of reboots and phone turning off by itself before that. I'll see what happens when I charge it tonight and I'll let u guys know.

results don't look so good..
Hmmm prerooted I had maybe one and some freezing and lag..
rooted no reboots except running eaglesblood rom and experimental kernel with pauls lag apparentky too much going on there. .
If your phone is rebooting constantly don't even waste your time return it for a new unit. The att galaxy s had the same prob and everyone waited for a fix only to find out it was hardware related....if your in the 14 day window don't even waste your time and end up with a refurb

I bought my g2x a day after launch. For a few days, I didn't experience any reboots. After that they starting happening but not too often. Eventually (by yesterday), it was happening more often. Somewhere in that time frame I did a factory reset to try to improve battery life.
I called tmobile support yesterday and they made do another factory reset and not install any apps. It has been 16 hours without a reboot but that doesn't prove anything, really. First, it doesn't necessarily happen every day. Second, without any non-default apps installed, it may not be taxing the device enough. Third, even if it is an app's fault, it may not be directly the apps fault. Am I supposed to run no apps if that turns out to be the problem?
They will be calling back at three and I'm going to try to push them for a replacement. I'm also having reception issues and the battery could certainly last longer.
None here, gps is not turned off

I am on my 5th G2X... with a build date of 4/3/2011 and I have not had a reboot as of yet with GPS turned on. This has also been the best phone out of all those 5, I have a week left and if I experience problems I will be taking it back. As somoene said dont waste your time your better off returning it then waiting for a fix.

I just took it to the store, told them the problems I was having mentioned the reboots, screen bleed, and data connection issues. Told them I was within the 14days and that Customer Care told me to come to the store and try and get a working phone. I wouldnt talk about the reboots as it may not happen in store if you have screen bleed its easier that way cause you can prove that.
Did you buy it in store, online or over the phone?

Reboots still after OTA Update

This is for stock unrooted peeps.
Anyone that has had reboot problems on their thunderbolts, still experiencing them after updating?
Wife's tbolt starting rebooting a couple times a day about a week ago. Did the update friday night and has rebooted twice since then. Thinking it might be hardware related if others have had their reboots fixed.
Probably going to call verizon next time it does this to try and get a replacement.
I've had only one that I've noticed so far, but that makes it less than the 3-4 daily I noticed with the most recent leak prior (mr2.5 thingee)
No reboots for me since the update. Of course Verzion only claimed this OTA would reduce the number of reboots not do away with them. I hope for you that they don't try to pull then when you ask for a new unit.
Start over from scratch do an app backup...uninstall all apps restart phone try favorite app first give couple hours or a day. slowly put apps back on right down time and date each app installed .doing this is a p.i.t.a .....some apps dont play nicely with others ...plus you dont want a p.o.s.reman phone....anyways this might take a couple of days.....sometimes verizon wont shoot from the hip and just replace .. reason i say this for a while 1st thing they do is hard reset phone and start over ...more or less have to prove problem make sure everytime u call have them note the account....lets see 10 imagios 6 collasped buttons 4 bluetooth failures .....fun fun...nothings easy with verizon

same story -- i'm still getting them occasionally but not as often. I was all excited about the update, but a few hours after it installed I was browsing the web and - bam - reboot. It's like a slap in the face. I've also been having a serious problem with my TB just discharging itself overnight... while plugged into the wall charger. I wake up and it has a completely dead battery which is a major PITA, doubly so because I use it as my alarm clock.
My TB has been up since the update on Friday. It used to reboot multiple times a day. Hope this lasts for me.

I have never had a reboot and I have been rooted since a week after owning the TBolt... I guess just lucky
Haven't had a reboot since memorial day weekend.
Never had a reboot before or after the update....I just bought my Tbolt two weeks ago, maybe they corrected the rebooting issues with the current hardware?? I mean if users are still rebooting after the update maybe its not software...
I've been really really lucky here I guess. I bought my Thunderbolt about a week after it came out and have had maybe 3-4 reboots since then. I have gone through a few roms/kernals/radios but never any issues. It must just be a hit/miss thing with hardware to be honest. Either that or the network, I'm in West Lafayette maybe our network is just far superior
The only gripe I have had is shutdowns, which IMO are more annoying because I can't just turn it back on, I have to pull the battery and wait a couple minutes before putting it back in and then waiting another minute before it responds to the power button to turn it back on again.
All in all I am happy with it compared to all others complaints on reboots. I would rather have a small number of reboots/shutdowns than a refurbished phone with possibly more issues.
I've been rebooting still like CRAZY. Before and after the update. I got on Verizon and received my phone on Thursday. It was rebooting over and over and over... I noticed it happened if I left wifi coverage at work or home. Even after the update, same thing! Rebooting over and over like no tomorrow.
I noticed that with LTE on it would loose connectivity all together until I manually rebooted. If I was on Edge or 3G it would stay up longer. I have since then turned off LTE and it has been fine, but still reboots every few hours.

I have had 1 reboot after having mine for over a month or so now. Been rooted since day 1 and have changed radios multiple times along with ROMs/Kernels. I guess we are both lucky?
Never once had a reboot. Custom rom since day one though. Stock sucks.
On a helpful side though. Always best to do a hard reset after a update. I know its a pain but it is the best solution normally.

[Q] Moto G rebooting

My wifes Moto G occaisionally crashes and reboots. It hasnt happened very often but I would like to know if it is happening to anyone else and if they know the cause? Maybe it's a bug that will be sorted with a future software upgrade?
The same is happening to me right now, I'm running 4.3. Sometimes it becomes very annoying; I already contacted Motorola through, they're supposed to call me later today...
I hope that KitKat solves this issue because I don't want to root yet.

Same issue here. Got the device, (US GSM) on Dec. 14th, and had it happen a couple of times. I didn't think anything of it, because this phone is for my son, and I was trying out parental control stuff on it. I wrapped it, and it sat under the tree till the 25th, which is when I updated it to 4.4, and the crashing has gotten worse. I get random app crashes, and more reboots now than ever. I cleared the partition cache, which didn't work. I am going to try a factory wipe and see if that fixes it, but I honestly doubt it. Moto chat told me to call in the morning to talk to a level 2 tech.
So, there seem to be a few of us, but I didn't see anything on their support forums....

So far I've had a single instant reboot in the camera app. Hope it doesn't get worse.
The phone is still rebooting sometimes. Is there any way I can check why it is happening like something that will create an error log? Or does anyone have any tips for stopping it happening? It is a very minor nuisance at the moment but I'm afraid it might get worse. Especially if it is a problem with the hardware rather than the software.

I've got the International 8 GB version from Koodo and it hasn't rebooted since I started using it full time on Dec 28. It remains powered up 24/7.
Often these reboots and crashes are user app related, it may be a good idea to data factory reset the phone and see if the issue remains.
Undervolting the cpu may cause these issues too if you undervolt too much.
I have 120 apps installed and had no crash/reboot so far in the 3 weeks i had the phone.
I have same trouble. My device is crashing and rebooting sometimes at day. Is there any solution??
Moto g purchased in mexico, telcel.
Guys, return it to your phone dealer if you can. Waiting for a fix(that may or may not come) will just increase your pain. If the service center spots the restart, they should definitely repair/replace your phone.

Yes it could be but I think it's most likely Android OS or Motorola's own certain app that's causing this. My device resets so frequently that's it become impossible to use, unbelievably it reboots every 5-10min, even when I leave the phone on standby I see it rebooting it self.
It's no just specific app that I use, it has rebooted while I'm browsing (Google Chrome), in Gallery app, on Play Store and also when I was transferring images from pc to the device!
Motorola Chat support are useless, they just game me links to Moto UK Support contact, that's it. Not much of advice.
So I will be taking it back to Phone4u store and possibly get it replaced if they can.
Kit kat seems to have fixed problem.

My wifes phone seemed to be getting worse. It rebooted four times the day before yesterday. It always seemed to be worst when we were travelling.
Yesterday morning the Kit Kat update became available. The phone hasn't rebooted since. Hope I'm not speaking too soon but fingers crossed it seems to be fixed.
We got 2 Moto G's in our family (one for me, one for my father), both ordered from Amazon.de as 8gb version (XT1032)
I haven't seen any reboots on one of these devices. They both got updated to 4.4.2 yesterday and also no crashes.
Has anyone found out what is causing the crashes? Is it maybe even a hardware failure?

If the Kit kat upgrade has cured the problem on my wifes phone then it must have been software related. Possibly an app I had downloaded was causing it. It's worth pointing out as well that most people didn't seem to have this issue.
BTW I spoke to Motorola chat a few days ago using the help app. on the phone. They told me it was probably an app I had downloaded causing it and a factory reset would sort it. Installing the upgrade seems to have done the same thing though.
Happy to hear it's not something hardware related.
I even had reboots with my nexus 5, 4 on random basis (not often). Must be some sort of app I've had installed on all my devices
I received mine in december (from Amazon [Retail.FR]) and experienced some crashes (almost every day).
I installed KitKat on it and did two factor resets to be sure it was not software related issues. Since then, a week ago, I experienced a crash every day and half (screenshot). Crash happened without any reason or specific context.
My serial number is: TA8900B6##
I decided to return my Moto G to Amazon and buy a new one.
I'm experiencing the same and I decided to try to run a constant logcat in the background to see what's going on. Also is there any way to have a constant recording with dmesg? I'm no linux commands expert.
For logcat (in terminal emulator) I used logcat > sdcard/logcat.txt which is growing in size as far as I can see. Hopefully this brings some news.
Good luck everyone.

Random reboots

Hi guys, I got my G920i from an ebay seller that everyone here has been talking about. The phone was in great condition and everything was fine with the phone for the first 24 hours. Ever since then , my phone has been constantly rebooting after a few hours on it's own. I have not installed any apps that I normally don't have on my other android device , the oneplus one. The G920I is not rooted or anything. The only app I can think of , that is different this time from the OPO , is the samsung push service update. I checked around and could not see anyone else who had recvd the Push service update and was facing the same issue.
Please help!
same
I have the same issue. I also bought the international version off of eBay. I didn't notice anything for about two days, but have now had the phone restart on me three times. All three times I was not actively using the phone and the screen was off.
One thing that I tried was to reinstall the Samsung push service update. That worked for 3 days as I didn't see any more reboots. And just 15 mins ago it happened again while the phone was in my pocket. Hope this gets fixed soon.
It has happened to me twice. I just disabled the auto update feature for my apps to see if that actually works. Will let you know if it worked after a couple of days.
I've had the phone since last tuesday and didnt notice any random reboots until this app updated and now i have 3-5 a day

Im only around open networks at work and it does the soft reboots around my house which is secured
My random reboots started shortly after the Samsung Push Services app was updated. I force stopped it, disabled it and uninstalled the update and I haven't had a reboot in a while.
My phone was rebooting several times every day before that.
Edit: The random reboots are back. This is very frustrating.
reflash the firmware fix the problem for me. No reboot since 24 hours. 5 to 6 reboots per day before. Hope it will continue.
I also have the same issue. It has happened 2 times for me, today and yesterday. I had the phone in my hand and suddenly I see the Samsung logo. Within 5 minutes it reboots 2-3 times. This sucks =(
I have the same problem, it only happens to me when I open Play Store or when I update something.
Edit: I have the F model.
I have had my 920i for almost a week, and I haven't had any random reboot at all. Everything works as supposed to.

I bought my 920i from Breed on Ebay. Everything has been great for the most part, but I do experience a random reboot at least once every few days. It just happened to me while sitting on my desk.
I am rooted, but I don't have any crazy customizations and I applied stock recovery after root. Only one app is frozen and it's that Samsung Security Agent process that was draining my battery. I also have it connected to a Gear S, but I'm pretty sure that's not the issue.
I wiped it twice yesterday and then set it up. It's definitely not a ROM/cache issue. I'll be interested to see if anyone figures out what this is. It could just be a bug that we'll have to deal with until the next update. Fortunately, the phone restarts super fast.
I also believe this is a software issue. I am not rooted and don't see myself doing that any time soon.
Which network are you using on your 920i? I am on AT&T network

AT&T here, also.
I'm using the G920F with an european carrier, so I think that is a global problem.
It happened to me twice today. That's a first. The only thing that's different is that I have a Gear S connected full time.
Didn't Android 5.01 cause the phone to reboot after some time due to running out of available memory?

I have had my 920i for almost a week, and I haven't had any random reboot at all. Everything works as supposed to.

Question Experiencing random restarts?

Is it only me or something common? (P7P)
I haven't had any, and my wife hasn't said anything about this happening with hers, either. We've had ours for two weeks today. I'm rooted, hers is with the bootloader still locked.
Have not had a random restart since I got the phone.
Alright, possibly one of the root modules is causing some problems. thanks for the info.
Rooted, no restarts.
I have been experiencing them regularly... Usually right after i try and make a call ...
This is the first time i ever saw something like this.... Does not inspire confidence!

Factory reset and use the phone with little to nothing installed and see if it still happens. If it does try a sim from another provider. If you still get them you have a faulty handset so RMA it.
I haven't experienced it with the Pixel 7 Pro but it happened sometimes with the 6 Pro.
Got one restarts just after freeze for 30 second twice. Rooted kirasakura kernel and despair both happen once
Hasn't happened once in the two weeks I've had it.
Well this is absolutely rediculous.. HORRIBLE support... Google Support wanted me to run the phone in SAFE MODE for a "a few days" to make sure it wasn'ty a third poarty app causing the reboots.. and if it still happens i will have to run around trying to find a service center to "look at the phone" eff that... Take itr back and i will go back to OnePlus or Samsung..... HORRIBLE first experience with a Pixel ... ABHORRENT
I still have one Day on my 14 day return window so i am returning the sucker and getting my money back.. I am not paying 1500$ CAD for a phone that randomly reboots when i try to initiate a call...
I had 1 random reboot during a VOIP call. Didn't notice it till my headphones told me they were disconnected, lol.
This was full stock, unlocked and rooted the day after.

How is that horrible support? 90% of the time it is user error. As a few post above mentioned. Wipe phone and try it with minimal apps installed. They want you to run it in Safe Mode for a reason, if still happens send it in or find a service center. I wouldn't call that horrible support.

Bare in mind this is probably thye first phone i have owned since my nokia days back in the early 2000's that is -NOT- rooted , bootloader unlocked or anything of the sort !(Yet)
I have my P7P now since the 13th of October and I had no random reboot during this time. Everything is running smooth and stable. My phone is not rooted.
I've only noticed phone crashes when using Android auto. When I try using apps that change the font and display size, that's when I run into reboots. My phone is rooted with multiple magisk modules

Just a data point: I haven't had any phone crashes when using Android Auto on the Pixel 7 Pro.
More specifically, whenever I change the screen to large screen on an app like Paramount Plus, or some other video viewing app. This is when I get the phone reset
