Galaxy S2 vs. iPhone 4 vs. LG E900 vs. Lag myth

So I made this video to put an end to this nonsense myth about lagging propegated by people who have no idea at all what they're talking about.

As can be seen the S2 is the only device which performs smoothly on all fronts. The menu is smooth, webbrowser is smooth and gaming is smooth.
The iPhone 4 has problems loading taxing sites and clearly does lag in a very annoying way. I can also point to several situations where the iPhone 4 clearly lags in a very annoying way. Didn't have games on there but gaming is good as we all know very well.
WP7 has a smooth menu and everything looks nice. Does lag in the browser but it's not as annoying as the iPhone 4. Altho the main menu is smooth some apps do lag horribly, like the Xbox Live app. Gaming is horrible on this device altho I hear it's better on the Lumia 800.
All devices are Wifi N but the S2 is the only one who achieves good rates. The LG is the phone with the worst download rate and the iPhone 4 comes in second.
I know both youtube and 9gag have mobile sites which work better but I picked these sites off the top of my head as a showcase. There are enough sites out there which do not have a mobile site and are taxing to load.
So in conclusion, S2 Android is the best and doesn't lag, iPhone 4 doesn't lag usually but when it does it is the worst. Also there are several case in which the phone starts lagging so bad that it feels as if the phone has crashed.
WP7 has mediocre lag, the lag is there but workable.
All phones have been hard reset, I was in the process of reinstalling my S2 when the idea occurred to me. This is why the S2 has some apps on it and both the iPhone 4 and LG are stock and fresh.

I don't have one here rightnow but I can say that it's webbrowser is more or less the same.
The only real improvement the 4S has to offer on the lag front is the following. If you have a lots of menu pages (8 pages is best for demonstration but it starts at 5), you go to the end of your menu and then press home. You'll see that on the 4 it clearly starts to lag and on the 4S this doesn't happen.
I wanted to film this too but it would take too much effort to fill the menu with apps right now, maybe later. I think the point has been made and as you can see the iPhone isn't the holy grail of lagfreeness some might have you believe.

I don't know who this Zee is but I'd welcome his input. I made this thread to open up discussion not to start a flame war. The video it self isn't perfect and open for criticism but I didn't make it to be perfect. I made it just to show there is lag in Apple.

You welcome Zee's output but you don't want to start a flame war?You obviously don't know what you're talking about.
Anyway,talking about what 1gb of RAM can be used for...

I did a vid last night to show lag free ui using screencast but not uploaded it anywhere yet, even capturing video and superimposing a visual pointer to show where and when touches happened on screen in realtime I was able to swipe through screens and folders etc with no lag.
In fact it was so quick you barely see the pointer on screen where I touched screen to initiate action but still people say it lags.
Only lag I notice is opening or installing apps on stock gb rom.
I saw zee mentioned, surprised he hasn't commented yet as usually android lag is something he comments on. He has wp7 and android and says that android has lots of lag where wp7 is flawlessly smooth. Be interesting to see his take as he has used all phone systems whereas I haven't so can only speak from experience of android but to me the ui doesn't lag.

WP does not even support dual core cpu yet.

When people says that iphone doesn't lag they mostly mean that it has 60fps buttersmooth interface without any dropped frames most of the time (In my opinion incorrect use of the word lag though).
It is physically impossible to show such smoothness on a 30fps hard compressed youtube video that isn't captured in sync with phone screen refresh rate.
I find my SGS2 pretty smooth most of the time, so I'm not defending iPhone (in fact I dislilke iPhone...), but your video is not enough to visualize the smoothness of the phones.

Honestly tho the comparison is a bit ubalanced imho: you compared the fastest android device on the market (i know how good it is, i owned one for 5 months) with possibly one of the slowest and oldest WP7 devices, and ofc the iPhone4 is as well a piece of history nowadays. To be fair you should have compared similar hardware: the LG phone you have there has the same hardware (cpu+gpu) as the HTC Desire, but compared to it the Desire feels like a sluggish piece of **** (not talking out of my ass, i've been using one for over a year), even if you tweak it and OC it like hell. Anyway there's no denying that right now even with the latest hardware WP7 sucks badly in terms of gaming, and the few games we have are insanely overpriced. Android has good hardware and good games, and many free ones look way batter than most "top" WP7 games; not that i really care tho, i'm not a heavy gamer and therefore this doesn't bother me much. Anyway in terms of usability WP7 is a pretty sweet spot between Android and iOS imho: it's, refreshing and new, pleasant to use out of the box and you don't have to spend 600€ nor hack the phone in order to have a smooth and consistent experience.
To each their own i guess...

He may have compared the fastest android phone on the market, but the simple fact of the matter is that the GSII has outsold any other android device by far (over 15 million). I still believe more people have an Iphone 4 and not a 4s, and is there a such thing as a popular WP7 device? So either way he is comparing the top sellers of each OS.

Sure but is this little LG phone the top selling WP7 device? I hope not.
I still think that the simple fact that most people have a specific phone doesn't make it the best one. If it was so then the Galaxy 5 aka i5500 would be an amazing phone compared to the Titan, but last time i checked it was a cheap low end Android and sucked balls. Ok sorry, just kidding.
Anyway call me weird, but i still think that a fair comparison is the one between devices with at least comparable specs (or at least price tags), rather than the one between those with comparable sold units. I know there isn't such a thing as a dual-core WP7 device, but there's quite a big difference between a Snapdragon [email protected] and a Snapdragon [email protected], believe me.

I'm actually surprised at the lack of attention this thread is getting, seeing as there have been quite extensive (and usually unproductive) discussions on this subject I was expecting people to flock to this thread.
The iPhone 4 / 4S is irrelevant IMO. The iPhone 4S has only been released recently and isn't mainstream yet. Past discussions have always concerned the 4 for one and the 4S does nothing to solve the issues I've demonstrated.
As for the question: "Why these phones", these are the ones I had in the shop at the time. I'll see if I can update or add when I have other devices.
As for my credentials, I own several repair shops (yes actual physical shops not somebody who works at home). I pride myself in being able to repair just about any phone with any issue unless it has water damage. I have most popular phones in stock and I also deal in used phones. Thus I have easy access to all the phones and I also get to play with all of them.

Not really, picking a "high end" one like the Titan or the Lumia should be fair enough imo. I have this Omnia W here which should behave fine enough (despite being a mid range phone it still packs the latest gen WP7 SOC) but unfortunately I sold my GS2 a couple weeks ago because I was low on cash, so I can't make a decent comparison myself.

I've had a Lumia 800 here and to be honest it doesn't matter that much. Games are still jerky, the XBox Live app is the same and the browser is the same. When it comes to specs most WP7 devices aren't that much different from one and other. The Lumia 800 has better specs but that bit extra doesn't really make a big difference in the end.

Yeah I wasn't talking about games, we all know they suck on WP7. But as far as regular usage is concerned my Omnia W feels a lot snappier compared to the Omnia 7 I've had for a few months. Ofc there's no night and day difference, but they are different to be honest.

[Q] Thiking of getting a Sensation. Worth it?

Ok so, as the title implies I'm thinking of getting a Sensation on the cheapside (160€) almost brand new. However I do have a few questions:
1. Would you say the phone is worth the price?
2. Do you think it is a good phone? What's your overall experience?
3. I mostly use my phone for multitasking and gaming sometimes, so does it fit the bill? The 512RAM thing scares me, my Galaxy W said it had 512MB but it had like, 378MB. I hated how it ran out of memory.
4. How is custom rom development for the phone?

1. I think a new sensation is not worth it. You can get a used for ~120-150 USD.
2. Great experience. 2 major setbacks: bad battery life and low ram(in my opinion as I am a heavy multitasker)
Battery life can be fixed with a replacement anker battery, and ram can be fixed with turbo swap.
Disadvantages are: medium resolution screen/4.3 inch screen(kind of low for video watchers), speakers aren't that great.
3. Ram is OK. It's 768 megabytes, but that can be fixed with turbo swap space module.
4. Custom ROM development is freakin awesome. We just got the 3.4 kernel with ion allocation, USB otg, and other cool stuff. We have aosp Roms(cm9/cm10/cm10.1), sense Roms(3.6/4/4.1/4+no sense 5

I like my sensation, but I liked my galaxy sii more, 160€ seems like too much, I got mine on eBay for $140 in like February it should be cheaper now, if you go on eBay you should be able to get a one s for 160€

I'm not going for a new one, this is as cheap as I can find second hand in my country (Portugal) and that includes ebay. It is quite the upgrade from my current (for two more days) Galaxy W and better than most alternatives I could find.
Getting a battery shouldn't be that hard, what's this anker thing though? And TurboSwap? I'll try and read up the link to see if I can learn more
Glad to hear Custom ROM development is well That's a very big factor in my phone buying decisions, actually. I don't like Sense though, so I think I'll tinker around and see what I prefer!

I wish I could. The cheapest I can find a One S is around 250€ both locally and on eBay and I can't afford that atm. I will admit the SII is better hardware-wise, the look of it is just too unappealing and blocky, haha

1) I don't know how to compare it to what's on offer today so I won't answer that
2) I'll just say I enjoyed (and still do) every moment with this phone. I get good enough battery life (and I say that as a traveler who tends to spend a lot of time away from the charger). Performance is nice (everything is smooth and I hadn't found an app that won't run because of power), and build quality is great (except for dust on screen issue which my device suffers from, it survived some nasty falls, which to compare to my dad's GS4 (which dropped from 0.5m on a floor and died), the device is just awesomly built.
3) On stock roms I got issues with that, but once you are rooted and use custom ROMs there are many tweaks available to improve your performance. I must say that CM runs silky smooth with lots of apps running in the background, while sense roms started struggling after some time (but still were good). about the lower amount of RAM than advertised, it's because the GPU reserves RAM as dedicated memory for it to work (like desktop GPUs with their own RAM).
4) Just awesome, there are many ROMs available,just like AndroidSupporter318 said, now we even have ION.
I would like to just add something to think about: Just remember we are talking about a 2 year old device, so know what you buy (no more official support from HTC, unless the end of the world comes and they decide to update it, and nothing can be guarranteed on the long run). but as it goes today, custom ROM development will continue for a while, and there are many users, so I believe as things are now it's still fine.
Edit: Forgot about this, but when compared to the GS2, at least in my opinion performance seems better, and I actually like the screen of the sensation more. These things are subjective, but that's my opinion on it.

I'm looking up this ION thing you guys mentioned, I had never heard of it. Also, I am aware I'm buying a non-supported phone by HTC, then again HTC usually drops their phones at the drop of a hat so that's not to be surprised. That's why what I look for more in a phone is community-development and build quality + hardware. Hope that makes sense!

ION is JB's new memory mangement, and it replaces ICS's PMEM.
Thanks to @SebastianFM, we can now have Sense 4+ JB roms on SEnsation XE.

I have HTC Sensation S710e and I think it is an exellent choice to buy a mobile phone like this as long as you can give it s-off with Juopunutbear S-OFF guide without to unlock bootloader.Secontly they are a big varity of custom roms and recoveries you can try on your device.

The speaker sucks.
It gets dust trapped under the screen.
Battery life is pretty bad (mine came with an Anker battery, and battery life is still pretty unimpressive).
Other than that, I've been pretty happy with mine.

1) like said before, 160€ may be overprized but if that's the common price in your region, then I guess you're still paying a relative good price. Especially since newer phones are heavily overprized these days.
2) I think it's a good phone. I like to compare my rooted sensation to brand new stock powerhouses like GS4. Even though they're much faster, the self-defined MHZ/euro ratio is much better in my case. I like the fact I can keep up well with brand new devices with my more then 2 yo device. I even outperform some phones in battery life.
the build quality is good, it's the way a decent phone should be build. Decent camera with LED and no plastic.
3) Especially after rooting, I never encountered a situation where I ran out of memory or ended up with bad perfomance. I must say I'm not an extensive multitasker, but I'll have to add that I never felt the need for a taskkiller app or such. And I keep apps running on a regular basis. I think a dual core is more then capable for multitasking, and the phone packs a decent amount of RAM.
4) amazing custom ROM support. There are plenty of flavours for both sense and no-sense ROMs. I myself am running CM10 for quite a while now and I like my former sense phone being a pure google 4.2.2. Many ROMs with a lot of tweaks, UI tuning and themes. I can boost my stock 1.2 GHz to a outstanding 1836 MHz
Since new phones are so expensive, the custom ROM support for this phone keept me hanging in on to it for a additional year. I took a SIM-only subscription because I feel no need for a replacement.
overall, you get more phone for buck wih a sensation compared to new devices.

Indeed a disadvantage, the sensation is a dust collector. Many models suffer from the little bit of dust under the screen and the speaker needs to be cleaned on a regular basis.
I don't agree with your opinion on the battery. I think you're not being relative in this case. When are you impressed? Don't expect it to last 3 days away from a charger. But 1,5 to 2 days with average use is excellent perfomance. I can reach 2 days when I only use it to check facebook, news, wheater, whatsapp and a occasional call. Don't forget that new devices wouldn't last a day in these conditions because of their huge screens and power-eating quad/octa cores.

I would say get it for the development and there are things like turbo swap to help on the memory situation.

I bought mine second hand after moving from desire HD.
I find the dev stuff to be great (currently on viper JB ROM). With an Anker battery I get 2 days out of it (I'm a light user with everything turned on) really those batterys are amazing. 2 of my friends (who are both on stock) use the battery and both are utterly amazed at the difference they make.
I do find the RAM a little on the small side but I dont notice that all that often.

Ok back then when I bought this, there weren't many phones available, but now phones companies went crazy, releasing new phones almost every 2 months, especially HTC. But I remember when I ownd all phones with my badass dual core phone, while most people only had a single core chip built in.
Apart from that, the phone itself looks kinda cool with the red lights & speakers.
But with the phones currently available, I'd suggest wait a few more months, maybe save some more money and then go to the One series.
I know a lot of people just think, a new phone came out -> current phones = all crap, but you just have to think back when this was released, it kicked ass

When buying a new phone, you should not think what it was, but what it is. Today you can't say it's a strong device (even if when released it was one of the strongest available), because there are many devices which overpower it by a significant margin.
Anyway, in my opinion, it still kicks ass

- Integrated S-Pen
- Better Screen
- Better CPU/GPU
- Better Camera (Software & Hardware)
- More OS Updates
- Likely Better Battery Life
- Likely Faster Internal Memory
- Much better design with no camera island
- Probably much more updates that I can't think of
With all that said, if I had the S21 Ultra, I would not be upgrading. I have the Note 9 and will be upgrading on launch day. S22 Ultra 512 Baby.

Rounded display corners, again? YUCK!!!
No SD card slot, right? Overpriced .5tb max storage capacity single drive don't cut it.
Likely more of the same variable rate display color rendering issues.
Different smartphone, many of the same mistakes.
Not seeing anything that make me want to ditch my N10+'s...
I would wait at least 6 months after release rather than risk suffering buyer's remorse with this puppy. Samsung's been on a losing streak with their flagship phones since the N10+.
Playing with the name and rebranding isn't going to help Sammy... nothing innovative to see here.
At least they ditch the hump... but still has the cam hole in a lame rounded corner display. blah!

Yikes, I'm sorry you feel disappointed with the new model. To be honest, if I had the Note 10+ I would probably wait another year and get the S23 Ultra. I've waited long enough for a new phone and while my Note 9 is just as fast and snappy as the day I bought it (on launch) The cameras are one of the main reason for my upgrade. Considering all my previous Samsung purchases were awesome , other than the the Note 7 which they figured out, ( Galaxy S1, Note 2, Note 4, Note 7, S7E, Note 9), I'll be getting the 512 on launch day.
I currently use the Note 9 128 with my 256GB and I take 4K 60 videos quite a bit and has been fine storage wise so the 512 which is more, should more than suffice. I usually upload to my PC once every two to three months. Cheers!

With a N10+ or a N20U you could have over 1tb and a dual drive at that... at a much reduced price. Those are my two recommendations.
Get a Snapdragon and 12gb of ram. 256gb of internal memory is fine, only apps, the DCIM and Download folders should go there anyway. All critical data goes on the data drive ie SD card; a V30 rated Sandisk works well.
Apparently the S22's cams aren't a big improvement over the S21's. To be blunt the N10+'s cams are very good and it has a display that faithfully reproduces them.
I wish I could say Samsung slam dunked it with the S22, but it appears they didn't. So far they are living up to my dire prediction from a few months ago; 2022 is going to be another bad year for Sammy flagships.
I'm less than pleased with Android 11 and 12; they smell like Vista style road kill to me. Since the introduction of variable rate displays the color rendering index has dropped and there are a lot of outright failures and not just Samsung.
The above are 2 reasons I bought a second N10+ running on Q. I have 2 now.
The older one has held up so well that they are hard to tell apart. Zero display degradation is observable and the only repair has been a replacement battery. They are fast, stable, and just plain fun to use. The display is still the best 60hz displays ever produced for a smartphone exceeding Apple's specs as well. It's drop dead gorgeous... with square corners. A good case and plastic screen protector are mandatory for these phones or they will get messed up.
I like to have the faster memory and spen but 5G isn't needed. The N10+ is snappy even with the slower processor and ram. 12gb of ram go a long way to keeping it fast.
I get 8-12 hr SOT so little to gain there. My ancient freeware WPS office runs ok on Android 9/10 but wouldn't on 11/12. That's impossible to replace for free now and it's a valuable app I use constantly.
On top of all that I have a trusted vendor that had new sealed box N10+'s; there's a lot of shenanigans going on with the N20U sales as well as the price. After almost 2.5 years* with the N10+ I like it even more today... so I got a backup with the intention of bypassing both Samsung and Adroid OS upgrades for 2-3 more years.
That was my solution after a lot of research...
*my current OS load will be 2 yo in June. Still fast, stable with minimal maintenance and no upgrades. It's stability impresses me.
It fulfills its mission. I place a very high value on these qualities.

I do understand your frustration with the SD cards but let's be real here. It's been gone from their top end phones for a while now. Just like the headphone jack, I doubt it's coming back. We need to move on. With that said, I'd love for it to come back as I have a Samsung256GB card I'd like to continue to use. I've used that card for more than 4 years without any issues.
I'm glad you really like your Note 10+ Similar to how I like my Note 9. If I had the Note 10+ I doubt I'd be upgrading either. At least for another year. Reason being, I want a 3 camera setup and the 10+ already has that. The main reason for my upgrade as I've said are for the cameras. I absolutely agree they're not going to be drastically better. But that's okay. It's better and definitely better than my Note 9. At this point, most top end phones take stellar photos and it's hard to come up with technology that drastically improves on it. Baby steps.
For this reason, I don't recommend people upgrade every 2 years, much less every year. Phones are getting so nice that we don't need to upgrade them as much as we used to. Samsung have been doing this with SD cards on/off since at least 2015. It been a little over a year, give them 2 years to come to their senses.
Samsung bite off more than they could chew with the Fold and there's collateral damage from that effecting their other products.
Samsung never was the most stable corporate creature... but abandoning their power users is a mistake. Too much hype and not enough balls will end badly for them. They are back sliding now on innovation (the Fold was a big mistake). Still the display cam hole and no new high performance batteries that their competitors have been fielding. This will take some time; the rabid box of gerbils has more spacial disorientation than usual

I'm not sure If I'm with you on all that. I think they are doing great as a company and as a side note, they actually won, again, the most innovative company of the year award 2021. Not too surprising as Samsung is a defacto global leader in screen technology, TVs, batteries, and chip design.
I think they're doing a great job leading the field when they debuted the Fold series. I personally would've gotten it if it was employing their ultra level cameras. Another reason I didn't go for it was I'm going to give it some time to thin out.
I dont think you fully understand the size and scope and vision of Samsung when you mention that they are unstable. They are far from being an unstable company. I'd like to reiterate, their phones are fine and doing great. For the most part, they are advancing their phones with each generation. Like a lot of folks, I do wish they kept the SD card, but I'm over that issue. No one really comes close in terms of hardware or software in my humble but accurate opinion.

The only thing is, it has one major issue. The battery degradation is absolutely unacceptable to most people as it will lose around half capacity after a year. Until battery degradation is improved upon, most companies will hold off on it. Samsung has been working on this for as long as I remember and will release it when it's ready. Not saying they stole the technology but sort of reminds me when BOE stole Samsung's folding tech and released Huawei's first foldable. We all know how that went. Besides all of that, I personally do my best to buy electronics designed by US, Korea, Japan. Unfortunately, China is not on that list for obvious reasons.

It's up to the user. You don't have to charge them as fast or full as possible.
On a heavy used phone the battery life for standard Li is about a year or so. That's all I expect on my N10+'s.
The idea the battery will last the life of the phone was tossed out the window from the start.
Of course they would wuv you to buy a new phone every year

Sold my S20+ after ordering a Pixel 6 Pro. The S20+ sold in 2 days. I'm still waiting for the 6 Pro that was ordered on Jan 1 and is now looking like a Mar 2-3 delivery.
I think I'll be following you in ordering the S22 Ultra 512 1TB on launch day.

Will they have a 1tb variant?
Because there will be higher demand for larger storage capacity and no way to supplement it, expect shortages as well.
My second N10+ is 256 vs 512gb but has 12gb of ram. The extra internal storage isn't really needed. I'll likely use a 1tb* SD card with it though. Apps, the DCIM and download folders are the only user items that should be on internal memory. Typically my internal memory usage is around 140gb as such.
*on the PC my data hdd minimum is 2gb

Time will tell, but better you than me victim buyer.
I'd wait until September to buy but really I think 2022 will be another lackluster year for Google Adroid and their little Apple sidekick Samsung.
2023-4 might see something worth grabbing.

Jacking up prices during a global economic downturn may not work out so well.
Huge internal size memories will do what they have in the past, cause shortages, people not getting what they due unavailability and causing even higher prices due to demand.
That silly little SD card slot is an equalizer for the savvy consumer. With it even 128gb internal memory is sufficient if you have 12-16gb of ram.
Without it even 512gb isn't enough... so you're forever watching how you load, download or wasting battery on cloud services. Far less wiggle room with a real big price tag, yeah perfect.

No one is artificially jacking up prices. You said it yourself... its an economic downturn. We're in a pandemic with global shortages. That's what happens to prices. Besides all that, no one even comes close to the incentives Samsung dishes out for their pre-orders.
And get over it with the SD card. No one will listen to your whines. Equalizer for savvy consumers? Lmao. With that mentality no one would've bought an iPhone. If you can't afford the new phone keep your mouth shut and stop spewing bs.

General I hope it doesn't have a curved screen

I really want to go back to a Pixel but I can't do the curved screens. I'm one of those people who actually puts his phones in a case and they don't work well with curved screens.
EDIT 10/6: Pre-ordered 7 Pro. The trade in for my 12 Pro Max with Best Buy was just too good to pass up, essentially makes the phone free once I find something to use the gift card for.

I use the Zizo Bolt with my Samsung N10+'s and it works very well. Occasionally causes cut/paste problems but going to landscape fixes that. Prevents accidental touches and keeps the phone undamaged. The curved screens absolutely need cases with -slightly- higher than display right/left edge guards or they will likely get destroyed.
Do Pixel's have any curve nested apps like Samsung ie One Handed Operation plus? Otherwise empty curves are sort of wasted space. I use both sides as app launchers and to control various switches.
At first I wasn't sure about the curve display but after a couple months I started to prefer curved over flat. Much easier to keep clean and great for vids. I don't even think about them now after over 2 years. Visually it took some adjustment for me... the visual cortex adapts and integrates.

It has a curved screen. The sneak peak during I/O made that clear.

I'd go back to a Pixel if it didn't suck. P6 was a f&[email protected]( disaster, and still is.

If you don't want a curved screen you can go for Pixel 7 instead of Pro. It has a flat screen!

I guess Google doesn't want my business so I'll stick with OnePlus.

Yeah but OnePlus keeps screwing up the software and there isn't even an MSM Tool for the 10 Pro so if you brick it, which seems to be way too easy to do on OnePlus devices (I have done it multiple times on my 9 despite doing everything right when trying to flash a custom ROM and would have been in a situation if the MSM Tool wasn't available), you are screwed.
Additionally, they have been throttling CPU performance. My Geekbench single core score on the latest OOS 12 is around 800 which makes my 888 slower than the 865. They changed the way they do the throttle as well, it can no longer be disabled with a Magisk tweak. Toggle high performance mode to force the phone to use high clocks all the time, even when idle, at the cost of much higher power consumption and heat than if they just left the processor alone to begin with. They haven't released OOS12 kernel source that's usable either so no custom kernel around to fix it unless you flash to a custom ROM.
So yeah, I feel like I'm being forced to go back to iOS. At least Apple listens to feedback and fixes bugs, OnePlus doesn't even seem to care about that anymore, and Apple doesn't throttle their SoCs, has prompt updates (OnePlus has been giving India updates first and has been leaving EU and global a month behind and we were already multiple months behind China), and has incredible battery life without having to disable basically every premium feature in the phone.
And yeah, Samsung is a no go for me since the Note 5. Swore that would be my last Samsung and as long as they encrypt the bootloader on Snapdragon variants, I will stick to that.
I guess I better start saving for that 14 Pro Max......

A sad state of ball dropping screwups when an Apple starts looking like a viable alternative.
The only flagship Samsung I would recommend is the Note 10+ N975U1. The Beast is a sublime work horse that just keeps running. New can be had loaded with Android 10, but forget trying to root this variant. It runs well stock though.
After that Samsung started going downhill, more hype than meat. If Samsung had a good new flagship it be in my hand.
Between Google Android 11/12, Samsung's no SD card and other insanities, I went with my second new N10+; twins. The one in my hand will be 3 yo this September, current load is 2 yo.
No detectable display degradation of any kind in spite of thousands of hours of use. It looks and runs like new. The only repair has been a replacement battery, due for another soon as it's heavily used. It's a dual drive 1.5tb machine that doesn't run out of ram.
It's a snappy fast phone that's still fun and fulfills its mission. I'm good for another 2-3+ years. Whatever... I'm not buying the hype or the junk.

I was on iOS from 2017 until 2021. Had the 8 Plus, XS Max, and still have my 12 Pro Max lying here. The lack of customization for notifications bugs me and the annoyance of having to manually sign apps to sideload them was obnoxious but I can live without customization and sideloading if I have a device that just performs well. Apple's hardware is solid too, I didn't have a single hardware issue with any of them.
I can't bring myself to buy anything but new flagships. I would just feel like I threw money away if I went to an older device, even if it's stable. This is obviously a psychological issue, I have many of those lol, but it is what it is. The OnePlus works fine on OOS11 for the most part but again, I can't bring myself to be okay with not running Android 12. I am actually pretty annoyed with some issues with the Indian ROM I flashed on here though so I may just decide to stick with OOS11, root it, and disable the performance throttling either with a custom kernel or by the Magisk module I mentioned because I would probably be able to accept that tradeoff but I always get FOMO whenever a new update comes out.
It's good that you found something you are happy with though. I haven't been totally happy with a phone since the HTC U11 although I will say the 12 Pro Max was close and if it wasn't for the fact that my cheap MVNO doesn't have a carrier bundle on iOS which cost me 5G access, I probably would have just stuck with it. Since I held onto it though and paid in full for my 9, I have a $650 trade in value which will probably drop to $450-$500 when the 14 models drop in the fall which makes the price tag much easier to swallow.
I have some hope OnePlus may get it right with Android 13 so I'm going to see how that goes but if not, and no other viable options (has to have compatibility with all US carriers, has to have an unlockable bootloader, has to have at least a 6.4" screen that's not curved, and has to have at least 8GB of RAM), it's back to Apple.

Android 9 may be the best. Haven't played much with the Android 10 N10+ but noticed Karma Firewall lost it's valuable logging feature due to it.
My old free copy of WPS Office works in both version as do most of my trusted overlay apps.
Android 9 and above are all reasonably secure unless you do something stupid. No malware on this 2 yo Pie load yet.
I use Poweramp as my player, just my music files alone are over 225gb.
An SD card is mandatory. I can do a full reload with no internet connection; the SD card is the data drive which is backed up redundantly. Even has all my apps as installable copies, no Playstore needed. So a factory reset isn't that big of a deal if I have to... anytime, anywhere.
Only the DCIM folder (backed up regularly to the data drive), the download folder and the installed apps go on the internal memory. No cloud anything needed or wanted other than Gmail.
So the hardware and firmware aren't my prime consideration, why should they be? It was a step learning curve to optimize these devices. Them fulfilling their mission is my primary consideration. I'm an Android pragmatist, I got out of the Samsung/ Android hype loop over 6 years ago. If not proven good, I'm not using it.
Got lucky with the N10+... always wanted a Note.
Firmware upgrades and updates (apps as well) can and do break things. No need to constantly be chasing the loose ends they create, so I don't.
Pretty much solid play time... that's the plan

i am not a fan of curve screen too.. i went to get p6 and it is ok at first then it has bugs soon after .. another pain is for countries which is not officially sold, it wont be able to use VoLTE and VoWiFi. Need to root and modify the xml ... ah well cant say much about that since it is not official sold.
Seems like OP also is not so great now since they are under OPPO now and Sammy is just too expensive now with more or less not so exiting tech.
Other china phones? that is another story

Yeah I went back to OOS11 last night and I'm going to stick with it for a bit. It seems to work pretty well although I'm annoyed at the discovery that the module that was posted to alter the CPU throttling doesn't actually seem to work fully even on OOS 11.2.10.10. I don't want to go any older than that though so I guess it is what it is at this point. Games definitely are smoother at least. Still not as smooth a iOS though...
I wouldn't mind having an SD card again. I have gotten used to not having one but it does get annoying having to back up my OnePlus backups to the PC when I have to factory reset and then move them back. In the time it took to copy from the PC back to the phone last night, I was able to floss and brush my teeth. When I got back to the computer, the bar was at the very end.
This phone will work for now on OOS11. I really hope that OnePlus listens with OOS13 because I really don't want to buy another phone but being stuck on Android 11 isn't going to be enough for me.

Yeah it's not a great situation for the Android ecosystem as a whole right now really. I may just suck it up and get a 7 Pro. I really don't want to go back to iOS. I have an iPad, that's enough iOS for me.

This is why I committed to using the N10+'s for likely another 2-3+ years by buying a second new running on Android 10. Both will likely never be upgraded beyond 10.
Not for everyone but I absolutely wuv this Note. At this point it's optimized very well and is just a gorgeous beast of a work horse. Using a SD card as the data drive adds a layer of protection and redundantly to the device. With a mobo failure or a system crash the data drive will likely be untouched.
So now the processors are too fast to be practical so they throttle them?
Even though the N10+ doesn't have the thinner cpu chipset form factor or the fastest memory it runs almost as fast as the S22U in normal usage.
With the N9 the lag vs N10+/N20U/N22U is quite noticeable. The S22U has a huge battery and less SOT than the N10+. Weights a full display cracking ounce more too.
For what?
If you listen to all the hype the latest Androids sound wonderful... until you think it through and realize what is important for your device to fulfill its mission. That's why a well designed/built 3 yo model running on 2.5 yo firmware can still effectively compete with the newest phones.

The annoying thing about the throttling is that it's not necessary. I have used a custom ROM on here and they don't have any of the throttling and it's no problem. Sure, the device gets a bit warmer under load, but it's not dangerously hot, we are talking like 42-48C, well within all normal tolerances. People ***** about their devices being warm and everyone suffers for it. Unfortunately every custom ROM I have tried has issues ranging from a stuttering UI to broken NFC and the fingerprint reader being off center so after the last attempt flashing a custom ROM resulted in a brick, I just went back to OOS and stayed there. Maybe it is time to try again though, I will run OOS11 for a few days and see if I can get used to it.
Honestly I really like my Pixel 3 XL, it's just too slow and lacking in RAM for me to make it my daily driver. The memory is more the issue than the Snapdragon 845 honestly.

P3XL was a great phone, i used it until it went dead last year. Then i went for p6 in hope for a better support and features as promised but then again ...
anyway p6 suffers from bugs since first update and i think still until now it has not been sort out yet. The thing i like about pixel is you can still flash it via fastboot and the image it officially available in the support page.
Just that if the country is not an official country that sell pixel then you will be stuck with no VoLTE and VoWiFi and that is a hassle

After Carl Pei left Oneplus started going down and now they are one of the worst companies under Oppo and the phone OS, design, and specs are not that good!

My OnePlus 9 has better specs across the board than the Pixel 6 besides the cameras. OOS12 is terrible but I don't mind OOS11 so if OnePlus goes back to their roots with OOS13 like they are promising, I may stick around, and besides, the custom ROMs for this device are pretty good so I can just as easily just stick to those.
Qualcomm > Samsung and I don't see that changing with the 7 series.

I think the non-pro Pixels are a better value anyways, seeming as this launch won't be too different to the Pixel 6s apart from minor upgrades like a new SoC with moderate performance increase.

I can't go from a 6.55" screen to a 6.2" screen though. Honestly I would rather have a 6.7"-6.10" screen. I could go from 6.55 to 6.4 but with them shrinking the screen size on the 7, it's a nonstarter.

Samsung midrange devices (A52s) longevity? A52s vs Pixel 6a.

Hi, I've had a Samsung Galaxy A52s for 8 months now. I recently picked up a brand new Pixel 6a for cheap with the intention of reselling it for a profit. But this got me wondering.
This is my first Samsung midrange device. Do you think I would be able to use it for 3 years without any issues such as UI lag and general stuttering because this would drive me crazy? I just want the same smooth experience I have now, but I'm not sure how well the A52s would handle the test of time. I regularly clean cache and put all rarely used apps in deep sleep. I also regularly factory reset after a major OS update (A11 to A12). Do you think the UI would get bogged down with normal daily usage? After 3 years would it run the same as it did in day 1?
Pixel phones are bloat-free and I would expect them to run as good as new even after 3 years of usage and I want just that. Because if the Pixel 6a is the better phone in that regard, I would sell the A52s and use this instead.
TL;DR: Samsung Galaxy A52s vs Google Pixel 6a after 3 years. Which one would have less lag and stutter (assuming both are "maintained")?

Upgrading Samsung's tends to break them especially the last updates. Ram size matters as they age. 6gb isn't that much, 4gb is inadequate on a modern Android.
This N10+ is still running on Pie. No upgrade needed as it runs like a bat out of hell. Current load is over 2 yo, still fast and stable with minimal maintenance. Projected service life is 2-3+ more years. It likely will run on Pie that whole time.

I haven't noticed anything bad regarding the last updates, to be honest, but I've heard some stories about Samsung phones and that got me wondering. Haven't read anything particular about how Pixel phones hold up after some heavy usage and this got me wondering and writing this question.

My oldest Samsung is 12 yo and still boots as does my S4+. A good case makes a difference unless it's a ruggedized phone which are rare today. Never had a Pixel and I won't give Google a dime if I can avoid it. Generally Samsung's have good build quality.
The N10+ is probably Samsung's best flagship even today. It's a powerful well balanced work horse with one of the best displays in existence.
This one in my hand has over 8k hours on it and it runs, feels and looks like it's new. The only repair has been a battery and it will soon get another one. Always case protected. It's a joy to use.
