Hey XDA-lers,
I think it's an unusual question because it's not directly related to tech... But maybe it can be answered here (hope it's the right forum?).
My girlfriend and me want to travel to USA next month for 5 weeks. We want to rent a car and drive through california, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho - typical touristic thing everybody does .
Since we need internet (for navigation and everything else), we search for a data plan. We don't need SMS or phone - only data. 5gb would be perfect.
Does anybody know a cheap plan with good coverage in this region?
I found this one:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tmobile-30-Wireless-Airtime-Card/15443357
But I think, you need to buy a phone at Walmart to get it?!
Something in this direction would be perfect!
Thank you very much!
snoK
Nobody an idea? No Americans here?
Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. I can't find anything relating to your question on XDA, it would probably be best to ask here:

Is it worth it and if not are there any solutions for someone who travels a lot staying in hotels with terrible internet?

Try Straight Talk, it's prepaid, $45/month unlimited calling, texting and data with a high speed limit of 5GB a month(2G speeds for the rest of the month after you reach the limit) or $55/month for a high speed limit of 10GB (2G for the rest of the month after reaching 10GB).
It's Verizon's network and speeds at half the price.

Will your gaming use more than 5 or 10 GB a month?

Is the Verizon plan truly unlimited? Is their a high speed(4G) data limit? Does Verizon throttle speeds after reaching that limit of 4G data? If so, it'll be about the same as Straight Talk's limit and still at half the price.

I wonder if I can buy one of those jetpacks and use it as a hotspot or if I have to use my phone.

From what I've seen, you don't get as much data with a hot spot as you do a phone.

I wonder if I could buy a verizon prepaid phone and try to activate it with straight talk. Verizon has killer prices on the prepaid phones. I saw a 30 dollar moto G play at the dollar store yesterday no joke.
It might not work though.

If the Verizon device can be unlocked it can be used on the Straight Talk BYOP plan.

When I asked Verizon about using it on their network they said I could but i had to buy 1 month of their prepaid before it unlocks which would be $30. Still a $60 dollar Moto G Play is STILL worth it.
With that said I heard one of two things. It either unlocks after you make your $30 payment or you have to pay $30 AND wait 30 days.
I mean I am tempted to try for that price but waiting 30 days would kinda suck.

Have you taken a look at Google's Project Fi? It uses multiple networks including your home WiFi and you only pay for the data that you use plus it syncs all devices that you have signed in with your Google account. Base price $20 a month for service plus whatever data you use, any extra you pay or data left over at the end of the month gets credited back to you.

I travel at hotels that is why I need this because bad hotel wifi so project fi won't work I did talk to a verizon rep and the plan is now $40 for the prepaid but she said I could unlock it tonight if I want to she will call me back at 10 pm, $80 for a Moto G4 Play (16gb) that's pretty good right? OR I could get the Samsung j1 for 10 bucks cheaper.

I'll be buying a new phone after christmas hopefully but i'll specifically need a phone that will be able tether/hotspot my verizon grandfathered unlimited plan without a tethering package. I solely rely on this for my wifi and i've been using a jailbroken iphone 5s for way too long now. My price range is probably up to 300$. I havent rooted an android phone since the original droid razr so i'm a bit out of the loop and trying to catch back up on all this stuff.

I hope someone can help.
I have a Verizon S7 edge, I'll be in France for a week from July 4th, then England for a week. I have a drone so the 100Mb from Verizon's data plan probably isn't going to cut it.
Should I get a local SIM (if so which one), or something like a T-Mobile Simple Plan phone, which would only work if the phone has a hotspot, or can fly a Mavic pro.
Any advice for the best choice?
BTW the Phone is not rooted, as I use Pay.

Thanks for the reply. I figured I was prepared to pick up another device locally if I had to.
What I learned was the T-Mobile is probably the best deal for me at $100 total to use for a month unlimited data, but paying for calls. So obviously you can use an app like GV or Skype to make calls. The travel pass lets me keep my unlimited plan abroad, and is $10 on the day I use it. I'll be gone 14 days, but might not use it everyday. So $40 more max, but I keep the same number, which is handy and worth a little more for me.
I think i'm sorted. Thanks

I'm glad to see that you got it figured out.
I'm not very knowledgeable about the real differences with what's available abroad in comparison to the US but, I hope to be prepared if I do go. I've never been abroad myself but, I would like to someday....
Have a safe trip!
