Calibrate Accelerometer

I tried playing Raging Thunder (driving game) and my car pulls badly to the right. Also, tried the "Bubble" leveling app and when it shows my phone to be level I'm clearly holding it at an angle.
My friend has the HTC Incredible and he can do a quick accelerometer calibration by placing his phone on a flat level surface and hitting a calibrate button. Can't find any such tool on the Captivate. Anybody?
I had no problem playing a720p movie on my captivate. Sound and video both work.

I saw a bunch of number sequences you can dial to get into all kinds of crazy menus. If there is no way to do it in the settings you might be able to do it from one of those setting screens.
Not sure where I saw it. It was on XDA around here somewhere I'll see if I can find it for you.

The xx where just taking place of Say 1 new email or 2 new email poping up. Sometimes it 4. No "x" show it was just ment as a random number amount.
Newest update as far as i know. 2.1 and i hit check for update and there was none.
OK, so the GPS issue aside, I've encountered some random other problems with my Captivate. I'm JH2 with the SuperRooter tool installed. Some of these are actual problems, some are just gripes.
1 - Sometimes for no apparent reason the brightness will change. It will drop all the way down to the lowest setting and I have to go in and manually raise it up again.
2 - Google Voice has been problematic, to the point where I'm not using it any longer. Even though I've set my phone to send voicemail to my Google Voice number it only works about half the time. The other half it goes to my AT&T Voicemail. I MISS the voicemail on the iPhone!!!!
3 - Most of the time when I unplug the USB cable the icon still shows in the status bar, and when I click to turn off USB it still stays there, and only a reboot of the phone fixes it.
4 - I hate how the ring starts off soft then increases in volume, it's dumb that we can't change that.
5 - The email interface is less than desirable. Actually uit's not the interface itself, but rather a couple limitations. One, you can't move messages to another folder - so I have messages in my inbox that I want to move to another folder in my gmail account, and I don't see the option anywhere to do this, I ahve to log in to the computer to do this. Two, on my hotmail account, the other folders I've created don't even shows up, so I have no access to those messages at all.
6 - I have other random wierdness from time to time, like tonight internet connectivity over wifi just stopped working, then started working again an hour later for no reason.
7 - The only apps I miss are my GuitarToolkit, the DrumKit app, and the i.TV app which was an all in one tv guide and let me schedule my Tivo recordings...
8 - ...and of course we all know the GPS sucks!
I have about 3 days left to decide if I want to keep this device or just fork over what's left of my sould and buy the iPhone 4 (I've been a 3GS user for about a year and have been generally happy once I got it jailbroken). Most of this stuff individually isn't too bad, but put it all together and throw in the GPS debacle and, well I shouldn't have to justify to myself WHY I want to keep a phone...

You should look into K9 mail. It's an awesome app and let's you have multiple identities ala Thunderbird so that you can send from your other email addresses w/o having to set up separate accounts on your phone. Very slick program, can move between folders, has archive, junk, etc.
I don't know about the others. I took my Captivate and returned it, but passed on buying a 32GB iPhone 4 because I know one of two things:
1) If the GPS and lag are fixed and/or GPS is fixed and we get Froyo I'm back to a Captivate or,
2) There will be another upcoming phone that is more open than Uncle Stevie's vision of what he wants us to do with a phone.
Having been an iPhone 3G and then 3GS user (yep, went back to my 3GS but only for 6 weeks or so) I can say that having remembered what real multitasking is, real choice is and real options with software - I ain't goin' back. YMMV.
I'll be willing to bet that number 1 is due to your finger on the notification bar. If you slide your finger across it, the brightness will change.
2. Bug with Google Voice, not a hardware problem.
4. Ringtone starts quietly so you have a chance to catch it before it gets obnoxious. It only stays quiet for half a second, and if your phone is ringing, half a second isn't going to make or break the call.
I had a similar problem with Google Voice. I just deactivated the service for my phone number then reactivated a few minutes later, haven't had any problems since.
I'm not sure if that'll fix it for you, but you might want to give it a try--just go to your voicemail settings on the Google Voice website.

Maybe, but I would agree that the option to turn it off should be available.
I bet the brightness problem is because you can change the brightness by sliding your finger across the notification bar. It's actually a very nice feature when you get used to it.
If I were you,i would go through the google voice mail set up again. I haven't had any problems with it at all.
Also, my ringtone does not start out quiet and then gradually increase in volume. Is it possible that the ringed you have tried are just recorded that way?
Thanks for the tip ob the brightness setting.
As far as I know the ringtone thing applies to every captivate so either yours is going it and you just don't notice it or you've got a special firmware or something

I also missed my visual voicemail. I've found that YouMail is an effective if not perfect replacement (my only real gripe is it is a separate app not integrated into the phone app).
That's too bad. I literally have none of those problems.
By far my biggest problem has been GPS, like others. However, with JH2, left all at stock settings I actually have good accuracy - even after 3 days - google nav has been right on. I used cardiotrainer and went for a walk and it was again completely on - better than my old Nokia N79, better than 5m accuracy.
Initial lock times were slow a bit over a minute (default has skyhook off). I put skyhook on yesterday, so I am interested to see if my improved accuracy after initial lock continues. What I have found is that all the suggested chances in the GPS fix might help initial locks, but went to crap after a day or so - and never really had the accuracy while moving. JH2 at all stock has lower initial lock speed, but must have a gps fw algorithm change leading to much better navigation / moving accuracy.
Bottom line - I will be shocked if Samsung doesn't have a 100% GPS fix next month (or with Froyo).

I dont think you know what you're talking about in reference to Hotmail. I have a hotmail account and when you go to the browser and login to your hotmail account, all the options are there. Right in the middle of the screen is a "More" button, just click that and a list flies out and scroll down and "Move to" and the list of custom folders is right there. It has full functionality of the desktop site.
If you're trying to use the built-in email app to work with hotmail, dont. It wont work. You have to use hotmail through the web browser. Hotmail has a great mobile website.

Yes, to activate google voice for your phone you have to go to the google voice website and follow the instructions there. You have to enter your phone number and what mobile carrier you are using and then it gives you a string of numbers and characters that you must dial from your mobile phone to tell AT&T to forward your missed calls to a google voice server/phone number.
Do that and it should work fine. I did and have had zero problems from google voicemail.
If you have brightness on automatic it will change screen brightness based on light in room. If you go outside it will turn brightness up. If your in dark room it will turn brightness all the way down. You can test by covering sensor on fron with your finger and see if brightness drops. If you dont like it turn off in settings.

Make sure auto-brightness is turned off...also, like someone else mentioned, the notification bar lets you adjust the brightness by sliding across it horizontally while the gray bar is showing. Neat feature once you get used to it, but it also confused the hell out of me when I accidentally slid it. Best thing I've found is to just flick the notification bar up and down quickly (vs dragging it all the way up or down).

Assuming you've set it up correctly (which it sounds like you have, since it does go to GV voicemail sometimes), the problem does lie on GV's end. They make it wait 25 seconds before GV will actually pick it up, so your carrier voicemail will intercept it if it's set to pick up sooner than 25 seconds. Until GV lets us decide how long it takes for it to pick up, you can sort of fix this with the following workaround:
1. On your phone, dial *#61# and click Send.
2. Some information should be displayed: number that the calls are being forwarded to and the delay before the forwarding engages (should be your gv #)
3. Dial **61*+1xxxyyyzzzz*11*30# and hit Send. +1xxxyyyzzzz is your GV #, 30 is the delay in seconds. The delay can be set in 5 second increments, 30 is maximum
4. Dial *#61# to verify that the new settings are active.
Unfortunately this means that it will take >25 seconds for it to send to GVoicemail, but it does reliably work.
As for the GPS, I'm optimistic that the firmware fix that Samsung has leaked will solve that and our lag issues, but I can see how that would be frustrating to some who want it to work now (as well they should). Sorry to hear that you're having gripes with the phone, but hopefully these solutions will alleviate some of your issues.

This is a feature. They built in a brightness slider when you draw the notification tray down a tiny bit and slide your finger from left (dim) to right (brightest)

No offense, but your assumption that I don't know what I'm talking about is way off...
Clearly, I'm aware that you can manage folders using the web interface in Hotmail, otherwise I wouldn't have known how to create the folder initially that isn't showing up in the standard mail application. I thought it was obvious I was walking about the capabilities of the phone, as in the built in email application...
If I have to use the web interface to manage my email then what's the point of even having an email application?
The email application gives me almost the exact same functionality with Hotmail as it does with Gmail, I think you're mistaken that Hotmail won't work in the default email app. The only thing I get with Gmail that I don't with Hotmail is access to view what's in my extra folders, which really doesn't help because I can't do anything with items in those folders like move them around.

I 100% agree with you about moving email. That is one of my biggest gripes too. Also HTC DOES have this integrated into their mail program, and also folder hierarchy. I think it is just poor that Google didn't integrate these right into the stock mail app, and also that Samsung didn't in theirs.
I think not being able to take MMS photos vertically is annoying. I was used to it on the iPhone; I think vertical or "tall" images look better for Facebook mobile uploads, and I can't find a way to take them so they don't end up sideways in the MMS or mobile upload. Any ideas?
Whats reassuring is that almost all of your complaints can be address through a software update.
Its rumored that the GPS fix + Froyo update will be launched simultaneously or very close together.
hi there!
just wanted to let you know that, for the last 2 days now, I'm experiencing this weird issue:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-5/334621-problem-half-blank-screen-incoming-calls.html
the lower half of the screen, when I receive an incoming call, is black (this wasn't so in the first 1-2 days). even if the caller has a contact photo, it's shown only like 1/3, the rest is black. this appeared like 2-3 days ago and didn't change after the small update I've succesfully applied.
the device is an 8GB version, bought from Amazon.de.
any1 has this issue? is there a fix to it?
THX!
I have fixed it.

thanks, but I wouldn't want to root my Moto G yet. especially since I'm kinda waiting for the KitKat update.
so, is this a bug, or is it a new "feature" of the later Android versions? because if it's the latter, it kinda sucks bigtime! the example in your other thread (where only the hat can be seen from the contact picture) is a good one for how stupid this is if it's really intended like this.
btw, this changed after 1-2 days of proper usage, I remember the incoming call screen to show the complete contact picture at the beginning, I guess it changed later. would it change if I'd reset the phone, for example?
did a factory reset and unchecked the option to restore settings and apps from the previous phone -- unfortunately, this didn't fix the issue. still, when there's an incoming call, i can only see like 1/3 of the contact picture. the rest of the screen is black...grrrreat!
Man, this is a bug in Phone.apk of Android 4.3 and I fixed it. You need root though if you want to change the apk.

I have just got a Moto G (4.3) myself and noticed for the first time, this new "feature" of having have black or blank screen during an incoming call.
somewhere else I even read someone's reply rationalizing why it was necessary to have a 2/3 black screen, so that the green and red buttons can be easily visible !!
couldn't the designers just added a small black background to the red and green buttons? that would show them clearly !!
anyway,
I installed this HD caller ID app, so now a nice big picture of the contact is seen.
it does run as a service, and though I don't like this, its still better than having to see the hair of my contacts calling me !!
it has many reviews, ratings and downloads, though u might check other similar apps too. or perhaps another dialer app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tw.nicky.HDCallerID
works good enough for me, has some themes where u can change how the green and red buttons show up.
I do not know if I have a unique problem or I changed something in my settings but I have spent hours online and on my phone trying to figure this out. If I get a notification and pick up my phone within a short period of time (less than a minute or so), whatever app that notification came from launches and displays the item that sent the notification. For example, if I get a text message or email and pick up my phone with the intention of launching my web browser, the text message or email will pop up on my screen before I can do anything. This is great if I want to read that text or email but often I do not want to do that until later and it irritates the crap out of me to have to close that app and go where I intended. I think I may have changed a setting and cannot find my way back to the setting to turn it off but not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I am posting this in case anyone else runs into this problem. I finally figured out it was not an S8 setting, it was a Gear watch setting. I turned on Smart Relay in the Gear settings and caused this.
Hello everyone!
Hopefully you guys gonna understand that I just got this phone 2 days ago and been a iPhone user since Iphone 4! (Went from Iphone 7 to P2 XL) So I hope I don't get too much hate because hey, after all. I bought the Pixel 2 XL 128 GB
Anyways where to start.. It's been very hard to go from iOS to Android but luckily I studied abit as a software dev. where we learned few things with Androids so I did know some stuff atleast but there is quite good benefits with Pixel 2 XL that made me go :highfive::silly::victory:
The camera, I can just say Holy crap.. I never seen so good camera in my life on a small device like this! No doubt about it, The customization on Android where you can enable bluetooth, locations and all that is a really good one too and the screen is also really beautiful, There is so much stuff that I like with it but also some stuff I still need to learn and that's why I am here, and hopefully I can get the help I want and also hope it's not gonna be very long text aswell.
Problem:
[*]Adaptive brightness
This one goes banana, hopefully im not the only one but I have never seen anything more sensitive brightness as Google's, Changes every page / app you use and feels quite annoying as it goes up and down all the time and it just kills your eyes slowly. I did find an app called Lux Lite that helped me quite abit but with lower brightness takes me to the next point which is...
[*]Black crush
Black crush, For those who maybe doesnt know what it is, basically you can follow it up by watching this youtube clip: youtube[DOT COM]/watch?v=CYMRRn2Fu1s (Yes, im a newbie and joined today )
- Simply showing when you reduce your brightness, the dark color disappears and becomes totally black - The reason I want to use it is just against the night when very strong brightness kills your eyes just at bedtime. I usually check NBA and Twitch Just before I fall asleep, and now maybe it will sound racist but that's just love! Basically basketball players that are dark-colored and make them completely black and you only see their matchwear and it ruins a small part of the match.
I have looked into other videos and found that the issue is not only with Pixel 2 but also coming now to Samsung phones and basically the new Oled where the company gives a bad calibrations. Im not sure what Iphone uses if its AMOLED but look etc. at iPhone X, probably one of the best
detailing in dark areas of all phones that I have tried and sure I could have bought that phone but also i'm surprised this is not anything is talking about in any youtube reviews so I don't know whatsup with this but this is slowly making me go back to my iPhone 7... I hope im not the only one?!?!?!
I did find an app called Screen balance that helps it abit but I mean... 945$ for a Phone that I need an APP that I NEED to buy to make it look good?! Come on?!
But please, don't take this offensive now. It still gives a really good picture at high brightness! no doubt about it.
[*]Notification
Well, This might be a fix that someone that as more experience than me in Android now so basically I will make a construction of what I want and maybe someone can help me out?
Basically on Iphone there is a button on the left where you toggle to turn on or off the sound and what's happends basically is it just kills all sound if the toggle is on and what I did is that I turned off vibrations so basically I get everything notifications just without sound and vibrations AND thats what I want to make on the Pixel 2 XL now, What I have done so far is to hold the volume down button until it changes to Do not disturb and in the settings I turned on everything but now on the Screen "Where you just see the clock" it just sometimes gives me like small icons AND sometimes it gives me like a big notification like iPhone did.. but however, Is there another way I can do this like so its more instead of just the small icons and to check? Because etc when Iam at work I can usually see if something pops out on the screen (Can even be a pop out for 10 sec) but now it can be very hard if it's only a small icon adding. Hopefully you understand ish what I mean!
[*]Email Hotmail issue?
This is a combination of notification and not, basically what I have seen this is not as fast response as Gmail, basically if I get a email from Gmail, the notification usually pops out instantly BUT when it comes to Hotmail, this can take over 15minutes until the email even comes to the Gmail app (Where I connected it with my Hotmail since it had that option). and I sometimes can't risk it when im waiting for a important email to come where I wait too long so I need to check pretty often manually to see if I get one.. Now the issue is I don't know if that is a issue when Don't distrub is on or if its the Gmail application, Does anyone have any solution for me here?
[*]Snapchat
Well what to say here, Im not sure but I do think this isn't a issue coming from the phone itself but Snapchat, The quailty is just awful, Im sure my Nokia 3310 would make a better picture than that on Snapchat :fingers-crossed: but anyways the quailty is horrible and maybe there is a way to make it atleast abit better or something, I know that Snapchat is alot better with iPhone and also this isn't a big issue, like its not end of the world to get this worked nownownow but I do feel like it could be atleast at the same level as Samsung quailty atleast?!
Now I think im done and hopefully I did not overkill and I do hope from bottom of my heart that I could get all the answers of my questions and hopefully it's not hard to read since my English isn't the best one but I did try my best and hopefully I could love my Pixel 2 XL as much as I did on my iPhone! Help me newbie out!
I don't have other issues but my main issue is my pixel 2 non xl is black crushing. It looks like absolute garbage at night like in bed. Some videos I can't watch it gets that bad.
My phone is a Pixel 2 (which this forum is about) rather than a 2XL, so some differences may be related to the different hardware. I've not enough experience with the 2XL to compare.
Adaptive brightess: actually I don't have a problem - it works pretty well, perhaps occasionally I want to raise it a bit in dark conditions (I normally have the slider set between 25-30%, as I find that more comfortable than higher brightness), but otherwise the only time it causes problems is if I use the phone in portrait mode and shade the sensor with my hand.
Black crushing: my phone is a 2 rather than a 2XL, so has a different display panel. I don't have a problem in any of the images I've used for testing until I set the (non-adaptive) brightness below 5%, and even then I'm not in a very dark room at the moment so it may be that I'd see more if I were. But as it's a different panel that's probably not relevant.
The iPhone X is using a Samsung OLED screen. At best it will be the same technology that Samsung use on their current phones, but usually they sell 3rd parties a slightly older revision. So any differences will be in the tuning: Samsung do tend to assume that people want excessive saturation and contrast, so I could imagine them tuning in a way that crushes blacks. The 2XL uses an LG panel: it's fundamentally the same technology (p-OLED and AMOLED are just branding names: both are plastic substrate active matrix OLEDs), but a different company's implementation. People generally reckon Samsung are a bit ahead of LG in that game though.
Notifications: TBH I don't bother with "Do Not Disturb" - I do it old school, with a quick setting tile to toggle between Ring (which is Ring and Vibrate for me), Vibrate and Silent - the latter is neither ring nor vibrate. Not as convenient as the silencer switch on the side (which OnePlus have copied, but then Apple copied it from Palm in the first place), but not much in it (wake phone with fingerprint scanner, swipe down on scanner to reveal quick toggles, then tap it - only takes a couple of seconds in total). I'm not completely clear about the rest of your description of small icons vs big notifications, especially what you mean by "small icons": do you mean little dots on app launcher icons, or a small icon in the notification bar that tells you that there is a notification tile if you pull down the slide? Your "do not disturb" preferences include an option to block visual disturbances, so maybe check how that is set. Some apps handle notifications in different ways. Some apps can use the notification light to inform you that there are notifications waiting, which I find helpful (mind you I turn off the always on display, may be different for you).
Hotmail: I don't use hotmail, but the obvious question is whether you have set it up to use imap push (so you get notified immediately) rather than the phone regularly to see whether there is new mail. It sounds like your email client may be polling every 15 minutes.
Snapchat: I've never used snapchat in my life, so can't help.

Totally my fault that I bringed in Pixel 2 XL into a Pixel 2 thread, that's so stupid of me and I can understand the reason why you couldn't give me the reason I have issues with! but I still appreciate the answers you could bring in here!
About the notifications, if you search on google for ( android 8.1 always on display ) that's what I meant with small icons. But you are right with the notifications, I have found out that every app gives different notifications and some of my apps have really bad notifications, that sometimes they dont even pop out :silly:
About the hotmail it is exactly the issue there, I did set it up in Google gmail and it says it is IMAP but I could only have it on every 15 minutes, Downloaded Hotmails program and its the program that doesn't give me notifications.
Oh, if you meant the Always On Display then actually I don't use it in "always on" mode! I have to tap to wake it, so all I can say for sure is that while many apps leave a notification, if I wake it a second time it just shows the icon. What I don't know is whether in always on mode it would switch to just showing the icon after some time, or when another notification comes in, or whether it would stay there until you interact. There are some that I've never seen show text, but most of those are persistent things I'd not want to show it anyway (e.g. showing that the "WhatsApp web" app on my computer is active is something I'd not want an actual text message for). If you wake the screen with the power button you can usually see more detailed notifications on the lock screen than the always on display.

Yeah exactly! I turned it off and it is like you said, That some applications doesn't show any text or anything but just an small icon on the always on display and sometimes it does show a preview notification (Like a bigger notification) so thats what curious me like what's the reason of that :fingers-crossed:
I've never been very systematic in observing what gives what sort of notification, not least because if I think there's anything significant I tend to unlock the phone to look. I know that some types of notifications never show anything more than an icon (e.g. as mentioned the notice that the WhatsApp companion app on my laptop has connected). Some, such as calendar and email, I know do. I assume that it's linked to the type of notification, but haven't studied in enough detail.
As a test I just turned my ambient display to always on and sent myself an email. A detailed notification appeared for a few seconds, before disappearing and being replaced by the small app icon. With the display set off but to wake when new messages arrive it shows the full notification for a few seconds, and just the icon when I wake it. With it not set to wake the screen for new notifications then when I woke it with a tap I got the full notification even though it had been delivered about 30 seconds earlier (but only the first time I woke it). Personally if I were designing it I'd give options for the more detailed notifications to persist, rather than just be replaced by an icon after a few seconds, but I don't think Google have done that.

Try reinstalling it. I've heard Snapchat is building a new app version from scratch so I'm crossing my fingers it will be better
Otherwise idk what else to do to improve the quality
