What to disable when rooted? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I finally get round to rooting my phone which apps/services are safe to disable/uninstall?
My phone doesn't appear to have any network/carrier specific software just Samsung.

[Q] Phone keeps trying to update to lollipop although I am not interested

Hi everyone,
I have one phone that I updated to lollipop, and I am not happy with the battery life. It drains my battery, also in stand bye.
My sister's phone is still on kitkat, but updates keep restarting again and again every minute, even when I force stopping the application. The only way I succeeded to stop it is by disable download manager, but it also disables google play, and preventing the other applications from updating, so it is not a good idea.
Any suggestion how can I stay on kitkat, and stop these updates from restarting?

The OnePlus is DIFFERENT. Unlocking the bootloader and installing custom ROMs will NOT void your warranty - this is one of the main selling points.
It's a piece of p155 to install custom ROMs on as well - I've never know a device so simple.

I didn't buy the phone directly from One plus, so unfortunately, it will ruin my warranty.

Sorry, where did you buy your phone from? Your warranty is with OnePlus no matter what shop you buy it from, online or physical.
Any option will require unlocking and rooting the device, so you'll have no choice one way or another.
It is a local warranty.
Is that the only solution to my problem?

If the phone was bought through a third party, which it was, then the warranty is with that seller, not OnePlus.

Unfortunately because you didn't buy directly from OnePlus you might not have a choice here. Honestly though, I'd be arguing the warranty terms with the seller.

I guess that may be purely down to where he is from, because certainly in Europe it's not the case.
I buy a TV from my local electrical retailer... My warranty is still with Samsung, not with the retailer.
As long as I have the proof of purchase, Samsung has to honour the warranty.
My warranty is local, that is the problem.
Anyway, I guess I am stacked with my problem?

Hmm, you can just freeze the Software Update via Titanium Backup or just disable it, that will hide the update notification. I am still running on 4.4 though.
When I disable download manager, it also disables Google play store, since I can't download or update applications.

Then I think you need to root / unlock boot-loader to Freeze it via Titanium Backup. Unlocking boot-loader will wipe your phone.

Firmware controls hardware... it can damage and destroy it. This is the highest risk level endeavor you can engage in with an Android for multiple reasons.
Limited usage means limited testing and peer review. No reviews mean...
The phase wantonly reckless comes to mind.
Dont do it... I used it and it does not work. Phone is currently in boot loop.

I've unlocked my bootloader and installed custom roms and custom kernels multiple times and I'm using stock rooted right now...so I've rooted my phone multiple times too after I'm done with testing a certain custom ROM. Bootloop doesn't even scare me. As long as the issue is software for me I'm confident It can be fixed

My phone (Rog phone 5) turned off and didn’t turn on!!
After connecting to PC, it enters to EDL Mode and doesn’t exit from it!!

What were you doing when it started? Did you unlock the bootloader? Was it rooted? Did you flash something?

It's a completely stock phone? You've never unlocked the bootloader or tried to flash anything?
If that's the case, you'd be far better off contacting Asus about it. It is well within the year warranty and you may require a special cable to flash it correctly yourself. It sounds like it may be defective, so even recovering it could only be temporary.

It says they are updating the page. You probably won't hear back over the weekend and they take a couple days to reply normally. It is the safest way to restore the phone, though.
Making cables and using software that doesn't come directly from Asus for restoring from a brick is risky. It's a last resort when they say they won't help.

I suggest looking at how they did it on the ROG Phone 3 and then seeing what, if any, of that has a matching ROG Phone 5 version. This phone is only a couple months old, so there isn't a whole lot of public research yet.

If the device is under warranty and this happened without you altering anything I don't understand how they can reject it
If the device is only stuck in EDL mode but no hardware damage and has a working bootloader you can try (entirely at own risk):
1 - Make (or buy) a deep flash cable and see if you can snap it out of EDL mode by activating it a few times while the device is connected. (Chances are slim but it does work sometimes).
2 - Disconnect and re-connect the battery pack from the mainboard. The battery connector of ROG 5 is located on the right side between the north battery and the mainboard when looked from the back. You need to remove the top part of the motherboard for access to it. It's not a huge operation but requires some basic tools and some phone adhesive for closing the backcase again. Some cooling paste is also useful to repaste the heat conducting parts before closing it again (optional).
However, if the device doesn't have a working boot and/or it's really damaged then all above is useless.

You have to wait 168 hours to finalize the procedure.
Oh so this screenshot is actually normal? I expected a second green checkmark and a 3rd one after the 168 hours.

Normally you have to use the phone, don't be surprised if the unlocking doesn't work after 168 hours, especially since you insisted.

Why is that? I thought turning it off is fine. Since the phone will factory reset after unlock/flashing, might as well wait until everything is settled. Dont wanna waste time reinstalling everything.

For security reasons, use Mi Cloud for backup (will work with Xiaomi Eu roms if that's what you want to do after).
