Can't change default SMS app - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Pixel 2 Running Android 8.1 with March security update, Build# OPM1.171019.021
Using Magisk v 14.2 - works perfectly
Default SMS app is Android (Google) messages, I also have following SMS related apps installed:
Textra, Titanium Backup, SMS Backup & Restore; all have the correct permission in settings (SMS, storage).
In settings the only app that is displayed as an option for SMS is Google Messages, I can't switch to SMS Backup & Restore to restore messages or to Textra, which I've used previously.
I'd like to restore some SMS that I have backed up and switch back to Textra, but that's impossible if I can't choose a different SMS app as the default.

What happens when you open textra and just click use as default sms?

When you open textra and select "make default app" it opens the settings window for default SMS app, but textra is NOT a choice, only Google Messages is, so in effect, nothing happens, Google Messages remains the default SMS app

No issues on P, can't speak to 8.1

Default App Manager works in 8.1. (I only have Gallery and Hangouts, but I can choose either one.) It's under Messages.

Problem solved, I uninstalled all sms apps, then reinstalled them, now they show up as alternative sms apps.

Best SMS app for Frequent ROM Changing

Hi Guys,
Was wondering if anyone knew of a good SMS app (I'm currently using Go SMS Pro) that will back up all settings which can be easily restored after a ROM flash/change.
When I restore Go SMS Pro (using Titanium Backup- with backup apps external data selected) all the settings are gone- most importantly my Quick Text (pre-written SMS responses) are gone.
I'm after an SMS app which is feature rich (Quick Text, Pop Up for new messages, Widget and Delay Send) which is fully restored with Titanium Backup or which allows me to back-up/restore the settings (not just the SMS messages).
Any ideas/suggestions welcome

importing MIUI SMS app inbox to Google Messenger app

Hello, I have installed Google Messenger to replace the default MIUI SMS app, I have set it as default and gave it all the permissions on security and app settings, however Messenger app doesn't show any of my previous SMS & MMS that I received on MIUI's app... On all the other Android's I used, installing a new app would automatically show all the previous SMS I had on the phone, not sure why this one isn't...
Any help on how can I "import" the previous messages to the messenger app?
UPDATE: I was able to backup and restore the SMS and MMS using a SMS/MMS Backup app and it was able to get all the messages, but still after the restore the messenger app won't show them
There is english bug forum on MIUI website, there are also 3 reported bugs on different devices about missing SMS in Google Messenger. But because of low votes there are no progress. I can't give you a link (since I am new user) but you can easily found them by searching for "Google Messenger" in their forum. And up vote to speed up the fixing process.

Any app out there to backup notification messages?

In my phone, messages like offers/reminders from various organizations are clubbed together as "Notifications" under the "Messaging" app. All other messages (SMS/text) sent by actual people are directly under "Messaging" app.
All SMS/text message backup apps that I have tried, do not consider/detect the "Notification" messages as SMS/text. So these messages are never backup up.
Is there any app that does so?
Ok. Titanuim backup seems to recognize them as MMS.
It is backed up by Titanium in the binary files mmssms.db and mmssms.db-journal
How do I back them up in Gmail as individual messages under a folder?

Android 8.0 Messages app missing texts delete all

Some of my sent SMS text Messages are not showing when using third party apps like Tasker or Google Assistant.
How can I delete all texts from the Messages app?
What simple good alternative apps do people use for texting?
Sms and mms are stored inside android database, so that if you change default sms app, your messages will not be lost. Deleting a conversation from any app should delete it from database.

how to choose another application sms

hi,
usually i use textra for my sms/mms, i choose it by default and it 's good.
but with the x50 pro, it is impossible. I run textra in I choose it as the default messaging application and each time I receive an SMS, I have this message: "the system messaging app has been set as the default messaging app to ensure your messages are secure"
in settings, application management, default application, messages: I only have the system application messages. other sms applications do not appear.
how to do?
Seems strange. I use textra too and in my default app settings it shows sms set as textra..
I'm on the RMX2075eu A.32.... Rom.
I can only guess that the rom has something to do with it?
yes, i think because it's the 2071 cn. i had installed the 2076 rom and i had textra in default app setting (but unable to update the rom so I went back to the original rom)
