After I restarted my Nexus 5 (Kitkat 4.4.2) phone after a flight yesterday, it only starts in "Safe Mode."
On the boot screen, I cannot select any other option by hitting "volume down" button (default selection is 1st in the list). Also, once the phone starts, the "volume down" button doesn't work. Therefore, I am thinking my "volume up" button is stuck. Which explains why the phone doesn't start in normal mode and gives me the boot screen (On/off switch with volume-up button).
To my surprise, once my phone starts I noticed following behavior.
(1) Pressed volume up button. On screen volume slider shows up and volume goes to max.
(2) I decreased the volume via "on screen" slider (not through volume down button).
(3) If volume up button was "stuck," as I thought, as soon as I let go the slider on the screen, volume should start increasing again. But it doesn't. Therefore, I am guessing, it might not be a button hardware issue.
Note: I tried the aforementioned three steps with my wife's Nexus 5 and on Nexus 7 by continuously holding down the volume up button. In step-3, as I expect, volume does start going up, as soon as I release the slider on screen.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you very much.

I would test this by (backing up ROM first) flashing another ROM (maybe stock based) and test to see if issue persists. If not problem anymore, then it was ROM/software issue, try reflashing stock/ROM currently on to fix issue. If you flash and problem persists, then probably a hardware issue that may have to be returned for exchange through Google.

I did the factory reset. Unfortunately, it did not work.
Since I will not be able to select options via volume up/down button on the Bootloader screen, I am not sure whether I can flash another ROM.

Try Flashify or Mobile Odin to flash a touch based recovery (ie. clockworkmod with touch option .img file from website or TWRP) and boot to recovery via the app (ie CWM app boot to recovery or the goo manager app, which ever recovery you install). That should allow you to flash and avoid the need to use the volume keys.

This sounded a bit out of my comfort zone, so I called Google and explained the issue. Google is replacing my phone.
The call took less than 3 minutes. I received an email within 2 minutes with a link to place a replacement order, along with documents for returning old phone. Since I can return my phone after I receive a new one, I will not have any downtime.
Thank you for your help, RevelationOmega.
Very welcome. Good luck with new phone.

Don't Forget to Hit the Thanks if I Helped!
I had the same problem with my Nexus 5 and while looking for a solution stumbled on this post. I took a flight from sea level to a place about 2km above sea level and the volume bar on the phone got stuck. This seemed to lead to the phone automatically going into safe mode, with no way of getting out. On the flight back the start button seemed to also get stuck. I thought I would have to replace the phone cause in my experience trying to get these things fixed is not worth the effort. Much to my relief a few hours after I returned home the phone fixed itself. Oddly enough I had been suspecting that the malfunction had something to do with the change in air pressure, and seemed to be confirmed. I wonder if for some reason, maybe a design flaw, there are tiny air pockets in the phone that cause this problem. Anyway, won't be taking this phone travelling again, but I'm relieved it fixed itself... Hope this helps someone and the manufacturer corrects the flaws that would cause this, cause otherwise it's an awesome phone!
Ok, So my Shield Tablet has been great, never any issues until today. I was just browsing the web, gaming a few games, not installing anything or messing with system files are anything like that, and out of no where my power and volume buttons just stopped working! Heres the strange part though, they only stop working once the tablet is booted up. They work fine to power the tablet on from a cold boot, and they work fine in recovery mode (volume and power buttons), but one the tablet it booted the stop working. The only way to get the screen to wakeup once booted it by removing the stylus. To power down or reboot I have to use the terminal emulator, or hold the power button down for 10+ seconds to force a shutdown. Just pushing the power button once the tablet is booted up does nothing (it should either turn off the screen or bring up the power/reboot menu), same goes for the volume buttons, once booted they stop working. It has to be a software because the buttons work in the recovery. Has anyone else seen anything like this, and/or know how to fix it? I REALLY don't want to have to do a factory reset....
Never mind! I figured out what was wrong. I caused the problem and just didn't realize it. About a week ago, I was trying to use a ProEX brand Xbox 360 wired controller with my tablet using a USB OTG cable and for some reason the right thumb stick was being mapped to the trigger buttons. So, long story short, I copied all the info from the Xbox 360 controller map file in android and pasted/overwritten all the map settings in the Generic.kl file (which is what the ProEX controller was using for its mapping). By doing that, I basically accidentally removed the Power, volume up, and volume down key mapping because those keys are mapped from the Generic.kl file. I just didn't realize that's what caused the issue because it didn't take effect immediately. It only took effect after I rebooted the tablet several days later.
Also, this is kind of a double post, so if any mods would like to, please delete this thread. Thanks

Does anybody now how to get into recovery mode on an Xtrons HU? I tried every combination I could find and I've already been in there but can't remember how I got there. Xtrons support is horrible. They just sent me a video showing a factory reset procedure when I asked for the combination.
I have that one:

You installed malaysk new ROM for our MTCD units via the settings menu or another ROM?
malaysk rom
1. downloaded his rar file
2. unrar
3. copy .img file (dupdate.img) to my sdcard for maps
4. in settings clicked check update (rom is installing from recovery after auto reboot)
btw. Have one problem (i think that its problem with I cant wipe data and cache) u can find it in malaysk thread (last my post).
I have an Xtrons HU as well. I'm not sure the exact buttons to press to get into recovery, but I have done it, so it's possible. Try holding down power button until it totally powers off, then keep holding it until it starts to reboot, eventually you might get in.
On my Xtrons, it doesn't like dupdate.img name, and preferes update.img... but for whatever reason, it gets an error during flashing malaysk's rom, and reboots back to stock rom. I need to look more into it... it seems like it is flashing rom, but at some point an error flashes by too fast to read. I only tried it once so far, will again when I get more time to play.
On my unit, I tried the combo power/reset without any success. Before I read up on this, I did however get into recovery once by accident with just the power button. So after playing around with this more, I can get into recovery consistently doing this:
1) Hold power button until unit turns off and (on my unit) light flashes.
2) Let go and then press the power button again. This somehow shuts off the unit since it would normally just reboot after releasing the button it seems.
3) Press the power button again to turn it on. It should hopefully go into recovery.
I have no idea if this works on other units, but I have not seen a description of this in any of the posts/videos I have seen.

same to me. XTRONS HU, got into recovery by the same method but then, cannot flash. The unit is a GS.
Did you make any progress?
da_anton, did you ever get into recovery mode? I have the Xtrons PF75ATTA which looks the same as yours. After changing the /system directory to read write and adding 3 lines to the build.prop file. The unit only showed the car navigation lollipop screen and the android/car logo.
I have tried almost every combination of power and reset button. How did you do it in the end?
Thanks

Yes I managed to do it. First I would recommend you have a really silent place. You can hear some very quiet sounds at different stages. At least I could.
I managed it that way:
press the power button till the unit is off. I can hear a sound like a "plop". But very quiet. That is my indicator that the unit is off now
release the button. You should now hear another quiet "plop" when the unit is turning on again.
wait maybe 1sec or even more to press and hold the power button again.
the unit now enters recovery
It took me a while to got it working so you have to try it a couple of times.
Thanks, I managed to do it, took me about 20 minutes. I have to say I couldn't hear the noises you were referring to but just knowing the process worked only on timing and the power button narrowed down the possibilities. Thanks again
Xtrons TD696AS recovery mode buttons
This method works on the TD696AS as well.. Press and hold power button until dvd leds flash 3 times and then solid on., release and press momentarily a couple of more times. Wait a few seconds and unit will restart into recovery mode.

It worked on a Xtrons PB76FSFAP-S.
Thanks.
Just installed Oreo on my px5 Xtrons unit. (Mine doesn't have physical buttons minus the reset button).
From any point...hold the reset button for 25 seconds, let go of it...when you see the boot animation press the reset button again (not hold).
You will have to use the reset button as the method for going down through the menu...then hold reset button for it to choose the item.
Worked for me.

Xtrons PB7646BAP Recovery
On the Xtrons PB7646BAP:
I tried everything mentioned in this thread. Nothing worked because my unit does not flash lights or make a "plop" sound. As long as the the car ACC is on, the lights on the unit are on. There is, however, one way I can tell if the unit is on or off after pressing the power button -- by the hissing sound from the speakers.
1. Hold power button down until you no longer hear speakers hissing. Then release button.
2. Not fast, and not too slow: Press then release the button. Then press and release a second time.
3. Unit should come up in recovery. If it doesn't, repeat above.
This sometimes doesn't work. Sometimes because I press too quickly or too slowly. You will have to do it a few times to get the feel of the rhythm you should use.
Hi All,
New guy to the forum, but have been led here multiple times looking for answers. Typically I find them but I'm stuck on this one.
I have an AVIN 5.1.1 9" Navigation Headunit and I am stuck [during/after?] bootup with a screen that says
"Android is Starting"
"Optimizing App 1 of 1"
I've googled for a solution and it says I need to wipe the cache by booting into recovery, which leads me to a new problem--I don't know the combination to get into recovery. I've contacted AVIN, and they have responded, but with just solutions from this forum already--and not directly to the particular headunit.
I can't post pictures or links yet since I'm a new member but it looks like the 6.0 unit of the first hit when you google "e46 9 inch avin"
It has ONE hard button (RST) in the lower left above the MIC. If you press the RST button, the softbuttons light up. If you hold the RST button (even for a minute long) nothing happens until you let go of the RST button. It appears that pressing the RST button removes power from the unit and power is not returned until the RST button is depressed. During boot up, I can press the power button, but it appears that it just shuts off the LCD. I've tried holding the power button down, but nothing also happens.
I'm at a loss and so I'm trusting that the experts on this forum can help.
**SOLUTION FOUND**
using an external usb keyboard, I connected to one of the USB ports.
During boot up, I repeatedly pressed "alt+print screen+e" (no quotes).
It eventually got to recovery boot but there was no way for me to move/select options
I repeatedly pressed "alt+print screen+e" (no quotes) again
keyboard arrows and "enter" works
I know it sounds hokey so I'm not really sure on the details of how everything worked out so if anyone has insight, I would appreciate it.
Thanks!
The SOM says "HCT-SOFIA-3GR-(DDR3)REV2.0"
