OS/Software tablet button issues (power, volume up, volume down) - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, my Shield Tablet has been great, never any issues until today.
I was just browsing the web, playing a few games; I was not installing anything or messing with system files or anything like that (I am rooted on the stock 5.1.1 ROM though), and out of no where my power and volume buttons just stopped working!
Heres the strange part though, they only stop working once the tablet is booted up. They work fine to power the tablet on from a cold boot, and they work fine in recovery mode (volume and power buttons), but once the tablet is booted up they stop working. The only way to get the screen to wakeup once booted it by removing the stylus. To power down or reboot I have to use the terminal emulator, or hold the power button down for 10+ seconds to force a shutdown. Just pushing the power button once the tablet is booted up does nothing (it should either turn off the screen or bring up the power/reboot menu), same goes for the volume buttons, once booted they stop working.
It has to be a software issue because the buttons work in the recovery. Has anyone else seen anything like this, and/or know how to fix it? I REALLY don't want to have to do a factory reset....

Never mind! I figured out what was wrong. I caused the problem and just didn't realize it. About a week ago, I was trying to use a ProEX brand Xbox 360 wired controller with my tablet using a USB OTG cable and for some reason the right thumb stick was being mapped to the trigger buttons. So, long story short, I copied all the info from the Xbox 360 controller map file in android and pasted/overwritten all the map settings in the Generic.kl file (which is what the ProEX controller was using for its mapping). By doing that, I basically accidentally removed the Power, volume up, and volume down key mapping because that's keys are mapped from the Generic.kl file. I just didn't realize that's what caused the issue because it didn't take effect immediately. It only took effect after I rebooted the tablet several days later.

[Q] - Volume 'up' key issue

Hi All,
I have a strange problem with my volume keys - tried searching but couldn't pin down an answer so hoping someone may be able to help.
On 5 different custom roms now, and in recovery whenever I press the UP volume key (either via the rocker or with the case off), it immediately goes down again. I've even checked the key press function in recovery and it shows (i think) 115 then 114 immediately after pressing the UP button.
I thought it was a hardware issue, but when i get to the screen from which i can boot into recovery (sorry, can't remember the name) the volume up key works exactly as it should!
I've tried superwipe - installing a 3.0 ROM with standard kernel but nothing seems to work.
I thought i'd ask the question before i try to flash a RUU.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
How is your sound working ?
is the Volume always on 0, then it sounds like a stuck volume down key.
otherwise try the touch recovery (4ext)
Volume is working fine - and can be adjusted through settings, just not using the volume rocker.
For example, during a call if it sounds low I'll press the volume up key and if i keep it pressed the sound goes down. Same for media volume when playing games.
I can adjust the sound any other way and it stays at the level it should be at.
Could flashing a different recovery make a difference?
Seems like a hardware fault, you could always try some isopropyl on it (without battery in of course) and see if that helps, if not take it back to where you bought it and show them.

I thought that at first, but when booting into the 'Power Button and Volume Down' screen from which you can boot into recovery etc... the up and down volume keys work fine.
I would assume that means the hardware is fine?
No that just means that the Bootloader reacts differently to the stuck key than everything else.
RMA your hardware, you have a stuck key.

Volume/Power buttons don't work when locked

I have a weird problem where the power and volume buttons don't work when the screen is locked. I know it is not a hardware issue because I had this problem for a couple days, then the power button started working again perfect the next day and now its back to not working. When the screen is unlocked, the volume keys work perfect and controls volume as it normally would. I downloaded some apps to enable the volume keys to work as an unlock button, but they fail to work.
As a last resort, I was going to flash a new rom to see if it would help, however when I boot into recovery mode, the volume keys don't work and i cant move up and down through the options. In addition, I've noticed that when I do a battery pull and put the battery back in, the phone automatically boots up as if the power button was held down.

Your power button is failing. It is a hardware issue. Send it for repair.

Do you have an idea of why the volume buttons aren't working though as an unlock button with apps tho? I also question whether it is a hardware problem because this has happened in the past before and then suddenly the power button works again perfect for months. It is just very annoying for me to sit here and hope for it to start working again.

It's a known issue that when the power button stay stuck the other buttons don't work. It sucks, but that's what it is. Nexus S always had this power button problem and usually you can send it to samsung to get it fixed. Some people have tried to fix it themselves without too much luck...

[Q] Black screen + vibrate, Titanium Backup crash

Hey guys,
I unlocked my TF700T using the Asus unlock tool, then rooted it with Kingo App.
I opened a terminal on the device and ran "su" to verify that I had root, which worked I did.
I then installed com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup ("Titanium Backup ★ root") and began a full backup, but at 65% my Internet connection dropped (not sure if related, but interesting timing) and the system froze. After 10 minutes at 65% I powered off the device in an attempt to reset.
However, the device now will not start. The screen remains unlit. Charge LED will not light. Holding Power for 6 seconds and holding Power + VolDown result in a short (500ms?) vibrate, but nothing more.
I have not yet tried a paperclip reset, or connecting the dock. I have tried connecting to both USB and power. With USB, Windows 8 detects it as a crashed device (no surprise there) and fails to install a driver.
I suspect I'm hosed, but I'd be interested to learn why.
Any theories or suggestions?
---
Android 4.2.1
Firmware V10.6.1.14.10
Same behavior with dock connected.
After connecting power through the dock, the charge LEDs have both lit.
Ah just re-read and realised you only get a vibration but no screen..... Bummer - not sure what to suggest for that one.
Well, thanks for trying
Sell it for parts, I reckon.

Since you don't have much options, you can try these. I think that there were a few users were running into this problem and tried this. Some reported back that it was not working and some did not say anything. So I don't know if it works or not but you could give it a shot.
Try these combinations:
1. Hold the power button + volume up. You will feel the first vibration and keep holding both buttons until you feel the second vibration. As soon as you feel the second vibration, you need to release the volume up button But you must keep holding the power button. You need to hold the power button until you feel the third vibration. The third vibration is when your device is trying to boot up. You may want to try a few times with those sequences above in hope that it will bring up your bootloader.
2. If the above sequences don't work out for you, you can try this second solution. However, you need to hold both power button + volume down this time with those sequences above. Please report back with the outcome, thanks and good luck...:fingers-crossed:

Power Button finally died

Hello,
my power button finally died. Hard nor fast pressing didn’t work anymore, as it did before when this happend.
Then I noticed, when I plug in the power adapter while only pressing the volume down button it boots into the bootloader mode.
Selecting Start or Recovery and it shuts down.
Code:
fastboot reboot
doesn’t help either.
Because there are some files, I tried to replace the power button. But after removing the button it still does the same.
Are there some other possibilities to revive my old Nexus or just get the files?
Thanks.
I had the same issue with power button (first I just move it a little bit after taking nexus apart what helped for few months) but at last this also didn't help.
I went to unofficial mobile service and they did replace my power button and it works 4 months without problem. It cost around ~$30 so I think it was worth it cause I still have working phone. Now I use ROM which allow me to wake up phone with volume buttons just to use power button a bit less.
Had the same problem a year ago, went to unofficial service and they replaced it for about $10 and it's working like a charm since then..
