Notification settings keep randomly changing or resetting - Samsung Gear S3

I'm not sure exactly what the cause is but, lately, apps that I have disabled notifications for (in the Samsung gear app, under notification settings) have been randomly re-enabling themselves. And, every so often, all of my notification settings will re enable themselves.
This is very annoying since I have a lot of apps installed on my phone, but I only want like 3 of then to send notifications to my gear s3. This makes me have to go through and uncheck dozens of apps every time it decides to reset itself (since, for some reason, the gear app has an option to "enable all" but no option to "disable all")
Has anyone else had this issue? Or does anyone know what the cause is for apps re-enabling themselves? And how to stop it?
Thanks in advance.
(additionally, newly installed apps on the phone have their notification settings defaulted to "enabled" in the Samsung gear app. Does anyone know how to disable this?)

I have the same issue on gear s2 classic. Have you found a fix yet?

Sadly, no.
And it seems like it's happening more and more frequently. It used to be that everything would only get reset every month or so, but I've had it happen now twice this week.

same on my gear s2, extremely annoying

Yes! Annoying as hell.

Me, too. Happening more frequently, it seems.

Is driving me crazy ... every day I disable the notifications for 96 apps and enable just 9 and every day, somehow, everything is lost and again I find them all selected.

SMS Notifications - No Vibration

Hey,
I am receiving notifications for text messages, however, the watch will not vibrate along with the notification no matter how I change the settings. The watch vibrates for all other types of notifications. I am using a LG G3 phone and the Gear S3 Classic Bluetooth version. Is anyone else encountering an similar issue?
To troubleshoot I have:
1) Double checked the notification settings in the gear app.
2) Ensured the notification settings are on in the watch
3) Made sure notifications and vibration are on in the phone.
Thanks,
K.schoff2010
Workaround
To anyone who is experiencing the same problem I found a workaround this afternoon. I switched to Google Hangouts and received notifications with vibrations. Unfortunately, I was not able to reply from the Gear. I then switched to the Google Messenger App, which received notifications with vibrations and I am able to reply from the watch. There must be a compatibility issue between the LG messaging app and the Gear. I will try to update the feed if I notice a fix.

Hello,
I've the same issue as you, with a Gear S3 and a LG V20. All notifications trigger vibration except SMS...
The point is that I don't understand your workaround.

Hey, basically I worked around it by downloading a third party messaging app and making that my primary messaging app on the phone. In my case I like the Google messenger app because I can respond on my watch and the notifications come through with vibration.
Good luck!
Kurt
This same issue plagues the default messaging app on the S7 Edge as well. Ironic seeing as it is the same company making the phone and the watch, both are its flagship products, and the integration with the native Samsung messenger app is supposed to actually provide more functionality. Also, it worked with the Gear S2.
Another Samsung QC fail.
Same issue...
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier watch
Samsung Galaxy S7 phone
Samsung Touchwiz launcher
Samsung Messenger app
No vibration with notifications. Very frustrating and disappointing.
I'm having the same problem with my Pixel 2. Has anyone tried doing a factory reset on their watch?

I have a pixel xl 2 and same issue with Android Messages. The vibration worked fine, then all of a sudden stopped about a week ago. I HAVE done a factory reset, doesn't help. When I did, I uninstalled all the gear apps from my phone, then unpaired the watch, factory reset, installed the apps in order, setup as new. Still not working. I have checked everything. All the gear apps, notification settings on the phone and watch, it just. doesn't. work... This is BS... I'm getting REAL sick of Sammy messing this watch up...
I haven't tried a different messaging app. I definitely prefer AM, soooo, I'm not so sure about installing anything else.

Glad I asked before I blew it up. I'm a fan of Android messages too. And I like the way the Gear S3 update has been as far as the work out modes and layout. But I'm not a fan of how they fix one thing and break two more. I've had this thing for over a year now and although it's been fun, I think I'll be looking elsewhere for a replacement when the time comes.

I've had mine for 7 months. It's been in the shop for repair twice and still having the same issue that I sent it in for. But, they won't replace it because since it was in the shop twice within 30 days, it counts as once... Seriously. So, I have to send it in again first. The weather app is broke, and now messaging doesn't vibrate or popup on my watch like it's set to. Yes, I WILL be looking at other smartwatches once some new ones are released (hoping MWC). The problems between the watch and their BS support just aren't worth it. Not for a $350 watch.
I can confirm that both Verizon messages and signal notifications and vibration work on my watch. I switched back just to see if AM would work after, no dice. So, apparently it's just Android messages and Samsung messenger that do not work (so far)? This really needs to be fixed. I miss my AM widget and app. Signal is cool, but doesn't work with my car. Verizon is not bad either, but it has some caveats as well.
So I have a pixel 2 xl was experiencing the same issue.... Watch all of sudden wouldn't vibrate for text. Factory reset watch numerous times... Still no dice. Figured I would try to uninstall the latest update to Android messages and sure enough that fixed it. So try that and see if it works.

I did try that, didn't work for me. I just got an update for it two days ago too. This problem is almost two weeks old. Thanks though. I AM trying it again just to make sure.
Verizon messages stopped working this evening too... What in the actual eff is going on???
Well, I'll be. I tried uninstalling the latest AM update and now it works again! I bet I uninstalled them updated again right away the first time. That makes 2 Google apps that I can't update until they fix problems... Thanks greenlantern5!
Soooo, there is a new update as of yesterday for Android Messages Has anyone taken it to see if it fixes the vibration problem?
I have the same issue. YAATA text messaging vibrates on the watch, but I can't reply from those notifications. Since everything else alerts properly on the watch, it is probably android messaging. I wonder if we could find an old version and see if functionality is restored. I'll post here if I find something.
Edit : I uninstalled android messenger, downloaded and installed android messenger version 2.7.028 from apkmirror.com and back in business. I have nexus 6P which is 64 bit, so downloaded that version... so if you try to install an older version, make sure it is the right one for your phone. Of course I had to turn automatic updates in Play store too.
I am having the same issue. I have used Verizon messages, Pulse, Android Messages and none of those will alert me on my watch. The messages appear on the watch, but it doesn't notify me. The only one that is working for alerting is Textra. I also have the Ring app installed and it doesn't alert me via vibe or sound, even though I see the alerts on the screen. Other apps work just fine, such as pushover and Google calendar. My phone is a Pixel and running the latest OS update.

Uninstall updates for android messages, then go to apk mirror and install android messages version 2.8.040. That is the latest version that works. (I'm on a pixel 2 xl)
I noticed that the Gear Plugin updated recently and now my notifications are working again, even on Android Messages. Has anyone else seen a recovery?

Samsung Interface Not Updating

All,
First time poster, frequent visitor of XDA Forums. I've come across an odd issue that I don't know how to solve and I'm hoping some of you smarter than me folks can get me squared away.
I have a Galaxy S8+ from AT&T running Android 7.0 and Samsung Experience 8.1.
Problem:
I've recently noticed a delay or completely non-updating interface on my phone. It updates on occasion, but I can't determine what triggers an update. For example, I will pick up my phone from the desk and when I press the power button it shows the accurate time. When I unlock the device, the sense flip clock I use on the main home screen shows an earlier time (could be 30 minutes... could be a few hours). I don't believe it's just the Sense app because I noticed this issue where I checked a facebook messenger app that came and and when I closed the app, it still showed I had 1 notification. I went back in thinking I had another new message, but I didn't. So it was still hanging on to the notification. It happened a couple times with a text message as well. Most importantly, my calendar doesn't alert me prior to an appointment either, even though it's showing in my calendar and an alert is active. If I save an event, and exit, I can normally see the event appear on the on widget immediately as well... but that hasn't been happening. I have to press the widget to open it and confirm it is there (which it always is). Eventually it refreshes and shows up. But that delay is likely the reason why I'm not getting my alerts.
All of this did seem to happen after a recent update Samsung/AT&T pushed out but I don't know for sure. I tried clearing the cache from the boot menu but it doesn't seem there is wide success with that.
And perhaps I'm just not a good enough user, but everything isn't all backed up in the cloud so doing the factory reset to me is always a fairly large task as I have many things to manually transfer out and then back in. Not sure if there are great tools that help with this on a stock phone.
BUMP
try disabling battery optimization for those apps.
It seems that you have several bugs and if they all start happening after you have installed the latest update, then expect a patch coming soon.

I have actually done that. Found very limited success. I'm also finding very few results on this topic. Surely it's not just me though.
And I'm dreading the idea of a hard reset as I have many things on my phones, not all of which is sync'd to the cloud so it's a task to back things up appropriate. Specifically regarding "encrypted" apps like my password keeper app etc.
It would be great if there was a software application that allowed you to backup whatever is necessary to not lose data, then wipe the phone and instead of just simply restoring the full phone (which is likely to create the same problem one had before the hard reset), you could simply dump back in app data as needed. It would also help diagnose if the problem lies in a specific app's data.
High level overview of issues...
I have the Ring Doorbell app. I get notifications after "live". Could be 5 minutes, could be 1 hour... or possibly not at all. I have the app setup on my wife's iPhone and she gets them immediately. If I restart the phone, I will get notified right away (it's like it runs the app again and then I get the notification). Keep in mind, this is AFTER i disabled the battery optimization feature for the Ring app.
I also notice it occasionally with texting. I won't have any text notification in the notification panel, nor will my messaging icon have a little red circle indicating a message is there. But if I open the app, a specification conversation will have a red circle indicating a new text is unread.
All of this is leading me to believe the Samsung UI itself is not updating and therefore notifications that actually have arrived (from whatever app), are not displaying because of the UI and not because of their own delay.
Because of this concern I have turned off battery optimization for "System UI", "Themes", and "TouchWiz Home". I have not seen any change however.
[Solved]
I was able to determine by various other threads around the web (thought for sure I'd find it here, but I didn't) that the culprit might be the Google app. Supposedly it was fixed in some prior release, but it's not on my Galaxy S8+ w/ AT&T.
Once I disabled the Google app all the odd issues with notifications and clock interfaces and app icons not updating went away. The downside to disabling it is that I lose the Google Assistant functionality which stinks but otherwise there is no impact to using the phone. I re-enabled it at a later date and it worked fine for a few days and then started acting up again. Once I disabled it, the problems all disappeared. Clearly Google app is to blame.

Samsung smart switch works wonders, the only thing that doesn't restore is passwords, you have to have and external SD card for it to work, or plug it in to a computer

That is not the issue. As mentioned, it's not just the clock it's multiple interfaces.

I am having facebook messenger problems

Hi everyone.
My wife has an S8 and recently she has noticed that she hasn't been receiving notification on Facebook messenger.
Me thinking it was an easy problem to solve went into the phone setting clicked on notifications and found that the notifications for the app were all on how they should be.
Then I went into the app settings and checked there and everything was right.
Then I restarted the phone and it still wouldn't work.
Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and still no success
I even got my phone out an S7E and checked how the settings should look on mine and hers matched my settings.
All her other apps are working except this one.
Am I missing something here, because it doesn't make any sense why it's not working. I performed a stock flash on the device about a month ago to 3 software, so she could have wifi calling but I don't see how this could of affected this one app and none of the others.
If anyone has any suggestions here I am all ears because I am out of ideas.
Make sure that it's not being forced close by the S8's onboard memory manager... sometimes it shuts down apps and you won't get notifications. Double check in the battery settings (you can get there from settings or the swipe panel) to see if the Messenger app itself is active.

Hi people, I seem to have solved the problem.
I followed the suggestion and went to the battery setting. In those setting there was an option for unmonitored and monitored apps. When checking the list of apps that were in these setting everything was right, including the messenger app in unmonitered app section. I removed it from that list and didn't bother adding it back.
Tested.........and it worked....I even got other people to message her in different situtations and it worked and still works.....not added it back in to the list yet, as long as it keeps working I prob won't

Notifications problem

I'm having some issues with notifications on this phone. It often just doesn't notify me at all!
Sometimes I go into whatsapp and there are new messages but no notification in the top bar at all. Additionally, I have 2 smart watches (a pebble one and a cheap chinese one) and these both work for showing notifications but only for about an hour after installing the app, after that, nothing until I reinstall the specific app. I have told the phone not to optimise battery for the smart watch apps but it made no difference. I've had this happen with text messages, whatsapp, gmail and ring. It seems that this phone just has a real issue with notifications! Has anyone else experianced this sort of thing?
I hope there is a fix because it's basically unusable if it doesn't even let me know when important stuff has happened (like someone at my front door for instance!!).
go to settings and type in search optiflex, you can set up to I think 10 apps that will always run in background, Im having there all IM apps and some I want to get notifications from (no need for gmail, that works always)

I've got this problem with lesser used apps like those with live match scores.
Interesting, I've had this issue with my Note 4, budget galaxy phone (can't recall exact model), ZTE zmax 2. and ZTE Blade Spark. I assume it's just a matter of dealing with ram management. I've had a hard time finding another person with this issue.
Did any one come up with a fix for this? I suspected it was related to aggressive battery optimization, but even when the app is not optimised I'm not getting notifications through.
No problems with notifications... Optiflex disabled, all apps that you want to get notifications from must be white listed from "autostart manager" (or something like that, mine is in Spanish)
Probably phone configuration error.
No problems with notifications at all.
I do not use PowerMaster, but I use OptiFlex.

Yes, go to battery settings>powermaster>auto-start manager>allow all apps to start automatically (or select individual apps to whitelist). Also allow newly installed apps to start automatically as well.

Hey, I have had the ZenFone 6 for about 3 weeks and I must say that I think I wasted my money. Im having the same issues with notifications but more so with RING and WHATSAPP. I have tried all solutions that everyone has come up with and it seems as it its not 100% working. If you dont mind me asking, could it be the network that we are using? I dont want to believe that is it, but I wish I knew the reason for this cause.
